That was a really solid look back at the original game. Your passion for Metroid is really infectious and its great to see you're able to show tons of people this series! Another great video.
I just finished my tradition of playing through the Famicom version in one sitting right as you posted this. I do it every year for Metroid’s anniversary
Damn. I dont know what impresses me most. That you have a famicom that works or that you can speed run the original metroid so reliably, or the dedication to the anniversary
I tend to do this a lot too. It’s always fun to go back and look at this game and celebrate it. I can do the whole thing quite fast. Its always a good time.
@Frumpysnorfls This is very true, though I'm honestly good enough I've never had to stop and grind. in fact, the only obligated hit in the game is in the first door in tourian, as a rinka ALWAYS will hit you in that doorway.
I just played through it last night for the first time in over a decade. Took about 90 minutes. I was a little rusty, and also doing some sightseeing. Absolutely beautiful game.
I have an Xbox that has an emulator feature and I did a speedrun of this game and all I can say is it was a intense not in a frustrating way but an more interesting way to me. And Happy 35th Anniversary Metroid excited for Dread.
Yes! This game is really interesting. It's a "metroidvania" obviously, but is it really? More like, everything is accessible once you grab bombs, ice beam, high jump and missiles in the first 10 minutes.
this was actually my first metroid game, I got it on the Wii U eShop because I had heard the games were really good and wanted to start at the beginning. looking back, it was a bad choice for a first game and I didn't even get to kraid, but I still had fun and metroid is now one of my favorite if not my favorite Nintendo series
All of the live action Metroid commercials make me feel that way, except that one for Prime 2. Something about the exposed midriff in the armor and the fake Angelina Jolie made if feel a bit weird.
Nothing makes me feel old among Metroid fans more than hearing "Prime was my first Metroid". Oof. But this series means so so much to me. It was my favorite Nintendo franchise growing up, and Samus made me feel powerful as a girl. And that's aside the fact that I love the secrets and exploration. I'll always keep going back to the original three.
Well how's this for an odd combination? I'm in my mid 30s. I experienced the NES Metroid and GB Metroid 2. But never got into them. I played SNES Super Metroid at a friends house but didn't really enjoy it. The first Metroid game I legitimately got into and enjoyed and played was Metroid Prime. Then, after falling in love with AM2R, I went back and replayed the series.
I played Metroid 2 first, got it at a yard sale with manual and box. Originally my mom brought me so I could get a Spider-Man gb game, but I saw Metroid 2 and wanted that one.
@@orinanime That one doesn't make me feel old. Prime might have been what got you invested, but the classics were still your first. You're around my age. Haha!
Yup, these kids are so hand held. It wasnt difficult back in the day. Its just how you learned to play it. You just recognized where to go. Kids were doing it. Kids beat this game...
The Metroid Planets fan hack is a pretty great way to play through it. 60 fps, added particle effects, a fully functional map, starting at 99 energy instead of 30, it's actually pretty fun. It was the first way I ever beat the original Metroid and Nestroid is one of the first games I ever played nearly 30 years ago.
Metroid Prime was my first Metroid game as well! It got me to play Metroid II, Fusion, and Zero Mission on the Gameboy. I was hoping for something from Nintendo for this anniversary, like some ports or something. At least we got Metroid Dread to look forward to.
Back in the mid 90s my family was rather poor, we didn’t have any game consoles, and couldn’t afford them. my first introduction to Nintendo games was playing the Original Metroid on NES at my Aunt Lisa’s house when we had family dinners. The memory has been with me for nearly two and a half decades. RIP Aunt Lisa, I’ll always think of you when I hear that “Samus appears” fanfare.
The wave beam has advantages in Norfair, such as being stronger as well as being able to damage and kill Ridley. Being able to combine gun power ups in Super Metroid was so revolutionary.
My first exposure to Metroid was the NES one. I remember playing it many times as a wee one. My second one was Super Metroid which to this day, still remains one of my favourite video games. During the N64 years, I was hoping there would've been a Metroid 64. But years later after waitng so long for a new Metroid game, we got Metroid Prime. Metroid is a unique franchise that revolutionized video games.
5:20 I absolutely agree with you Orpheon. P.S I started with Metroid Prime Corruption! I'm just sad that my Wii controller no longer works. Not to forget how the lockdown here is intense, it's gonna be hard getting a new one or even a Switch to play Dread...
So glad there's others who love the NES Power suit's design! In a perfect world, Nintendo would've given us amiibo based on Samus' different looks over the years; like they did with Zelda's recent anniversary.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO ONE OF THE SAGAS I LOVE THE MOST Although the first metroid game was very difficult, I ended up enjoying it a lot (I also got lost more than once, but I finished it with all the items) Very good video.
I loved watching this look back on the NES Metroid game for the 35th Anniversary. It's amazing what the game accomplished back then. I remember first playing it through Metroid Prime on the GameCube as well. The GBA remake of it, Metroid: Zero Mission is my favorite 2D Metroid game.

First Metroid I played, discovered the series with this game and I needed a lot of guides to be able to understand how Metroid NES worked and nowadays, I absolutely love this game! It isn't the best Metroid doesn't really matter to me since this game, has a special place in my heart.
Metroid was the very first video game I ever beat. It was at a time when I was still in grade school, and my parents had just separated. I would get to play it whenever I went to visit with my dad, and it was a long journey that took many rentals - I didn't have access to Nintendo Power.. So yeah, this game has a lot of sentimental value for me. Thanks for retrospective!
Too much damage from enemies, not enough item pickups, obtuse requirements that mean a lot of backtracking (hope ya didn't go to Tourian with the Wave Beam!), and confusing LITERAL cut-and-paste environments (that map is too big for the cartridge so several rooms use the same layout but different sprite sheets). It's fun, but very flawed.
It is rough to start with but ultimately its still an enjoyable game. It definitely rewards you for being familiar with where things are and where to go and while I used to feel a similar way about the OG Metroid, the past few years I've gained much more appreciation for the original and its definitely become much more enjoyable to me in recent years!
Honestly I've tried to beat NEStroid, but I get lost too easily. It's not just the lack of a map. While that doesn't help it is also an easily solved problem today. The areas are just too similar. My brain can't memorize the locations because I just can't tell hallways apart from each other a lot of the time. I'll always respect it for what it did, but I'll stick with Zero Mission.
Samus wasn't randomly decided to be a lady by some intern, the entire series is based on Alien and Ripley was a woman so they made Samus the same. It's also why Ridley was named after Ridley Scott.
Thanks Orpheon! Great happy birthday video. The problem is, the NES/Famicom was simply not powerful enough, and didn't have enough RAM, to be able to achieve the developer's vision. It had to be chopped down too much to work on the 8-bit system. It was ahead of its time, it needed a new generation of hardware to be able to fully achieve the premise. I enjoyed it quite a lot for an NES game. Love that feeling of being lost and letting the player figure things out. I drew my own map, which is basically mandatory and a forgotten 'feature' of old adventure games like Metroid and Zelda on NES. Had a few glaring issues that kinda ruined it, though. Namely: many rooms looking identical, bombing walls without direction, grinding for health/ammo, to name a few. Yet to play Zero Mission (luckily do own a copy) so curious if these issues are fixed
I was born in 1980 so I got to see all these Nintendo franchises from their infancy. Samus being female was a surprise but wasn’t shocking because Metroid was heavily influenced by Alien, who also had a strong female protagonists/hero. Especially at the time, it was very obvious Metroid was Alien inspired so it came across more as an “Ah, of course Samus is female.” But walking left at the start of the game, now that was shocking. lol
