Corrie De Beer Well sure. There's alcoholics everywhere but even in that department it's just a little bit nicer. Over here we have dangerous alcoholics that stab you with knives. There they have friendly alcoholics who lift their hats good day to you, hiccup and sing drinking songs. And of course all of that is completely 100% accurate because as we know, all generalizations are facts. That's how it works right? Okay so I'm full of shit. But I do happen to know that drunk driving is strictly prohibited there which is fine because no one needs to drive anyway with a pub so close. It gives musicians a place to play. That's a dying thing in America. There's almost nowhere for young musicians to play. It's a meeting place of the community. So I guess there's good and bad but that's true of all places. Hell for every alcoholic they have over there there might be 20 drug addicts over here. I just pulled that out of my ass. I don't know the number, that's not really the point. It's just as I said, there's good and bad everywhere.
ravingmeatloaf Well, I guess not. We were in Scotland. We went from London to Bristol then Bath, then it was over to Ireland. We moved north through Ireland then went over to Scotland. Then it was back down to London. We made a big circle. So we must have driven through North East England or at least Northern England but I don't think we stopped anywhere around there. There were lots of pubs everywhere we went though. Some of which were hundreds of years old. Had a great time.
I find it hilarious that people can't read between the lines regarding the comments about bass players. It's more of an attack on people who just chose the instrument because they wrongfully thought that it was an "easy" way to join a band. People who are genuinely enthusiastic about the instrument and want to try their hardest to get better aren't the ones that he's getting angry at. I play bass, but I also understand that I'm still in the learning stage and know that I'm not ready to go into a studio yet. I don't see how other people can feel comfortable wasting their time and money (as well as the engineer's time) in a studio if they're not capable of playing at a professional level.
Hey Glenn! I absolutely love your channel and, as a guitar player, you've helped me a whole lot. I've shown you to all my friends (musicians or not) and sometimes when we hang out, we just watch your channel for the laughs! Many greetings from the small european country of Bosnia. & Herzegovina (yes, you got fans in this rather unknown part of the world) Stay awesome!!!
I've loved the logo from the first time i saw it. Very recognizable and just plain cool. And as a guy who used to really be into flight sims, I enjoyed learning how the Spectre part came about in another video. Keep up the great work!
I feel like since I started watching this channel I know the kind of bass player I shouldn't be and has inspired me to practise and I feel like I've improved because of your criticisms, thanks alot man, love the channel!
Hey Glenn! I just want to say thank you for the motivation to get better at bass and practice a lot more! Not only that, but I personally find the bassist jokes funny, as I can relate.! Thanks so much, man!
The comment about a band being ready because they watched your videos really speaks to me, lol. Especially because I'm a bass player, I work my ass off to make sure I know my stuff. A recent hand injury screwed me a bit, but that's why I have a Rule# 2 shirt!
When I first stumbled across your channel about a year ago I was really butt hurt by the things you said but with a little bit of straight thinking that all changed. My approach towards music and thirst for musical knowledge is all thanks to you man! Keep rocking!
Can't wait to see the Strats in Metal episode. I used to be a snob about that when I was in my early 20s...learning that Ritchie Fuckin' Blackmore used them was all I needed to shut the fuck up about THAT.
Have you ever worked with that Kontakt library? Always wondered how the room mixing worked with that. Do you bus your instrument tracks to a convolution reverb plugin, or...? Genuinely curious.
+12ealDeal I have EZ drummer 2, if I didn't already buy I would have gotten GetGoodDrums... I haven't hear kontakt library. I have not been home enough to do much recording of demos, but if I was then yes I would probably make a compression bus (want to try out parallel compression) and a stereo reverb bus. But I would just use samples for demos, I have and can play drums... so if I was doing serious recordings I would go to a studio. However knowing what sort of sound you want first is a great help for the engineer.
With you mentioning that your videos are having an impact let me also say that my band has used many of your techniques in the recording of our latest album and although we are still in the midst of making it, the results are sounding great. Cheers!
hey Glenn I'm a front man/guitarist, used to be the drummer one thing I've noticed that improved the drum sound a lot is keeping the closed hi hat closed really tight instead of half ass closed and rattling like most drummers do
I love your channel for the common sense approach to a lot of things coupled with a great sense of humor. Very informative and entertaining at the same time. Who could ask for more than that? Subscribed.
Captain Lee and Rob Chapman are the first few RUclipsrs I followed and Spectre Sound Studio is one of my favorite channels on RUclips. Nice to see you guys collaborate. Dots are connected, the world is small and life is great. Thank you for the great content, as always!
Hey Glenn, I have been a guitarist for most of my life. I have always thought that it was a good idea to learn bass to round out my skills. Criticism is one way we learn. A bassist friend of mine, who is dead now, would have loved even your criticisms about bassists. He used a pick and effects, he did it his way. Thanks Glenn.
Since I started watching your videos, I took bass playing a lot more seriously! I was being lazy regarding the bass and I recently started practicing a lot more. So thanks for the reality check!
I've been a guitarist for 15 years and love to practice. Very recently I picked up a bass, and I've felt very eager to keep practicing. I've been practicing as much as I did when I first started to learn guitar. music feels really fun again and I just joined a band as their bass player. should be interesting
OMG - The fact that you got a response to the red laser quip blows my f'n mind. I bet his cat laughs at him when the dude's older brother gets the laser pointer out - just to fuck with him!
I've recorded quite a few jazz combos over the years, from trios up to 6 pieces. Those guys frequently turn up and nail shit first take. My favourite trio had an arrangement where the person who caused the most retakes had to fork out for beers and food that night. They recorded together (live in studio) with FA extra post tracks. One occasion we went as far as the fourth tune before they had the first retake - and that was because they decided the tempo they did it at was wrong.
I see where you're coming from, but with that logic wouldn't that mean there's no hate speech against transgender? I get you're point but be careful how you word it(PS, not a sjw)
Lupe Omar I don't really see that as a choice people consciously make, that's more to do with the way your brain is wired up and the levels of different chemicals in the body as a result of natural progression. Being ignorant in this day and age is a choice.
Spooky Skeleton Well I didn't see being transgender in that way, that's because from personal experience and from what I've seen in the media, people who have become transgender haven't always wanted to. We might disagree on this but please refrain from calling me ignorant for having a different set of beliefs.
My problem with using the term "hate speech" is that there is no set definition for it. Here in the U.S., hate speech can be as simple as people holding an opinion that is unpopular/you don't agree with (which is why colleges all feel people need "safe spaces" to shelter people from opposing view, which goes against the point of college to begin with), in my opinion hate speech does not exist, only free speech exists, if you are offended by my views and my opinions, to quote Glenn, "cry me a F***ing river".
Here in Sweden we had an amazing store. Had. The owner died, so they closed down, but it was one of the most amazing stores in the world. The owner was a collector of basically everything! You could give him an expensive guitar, and he would give you a car, or vice versa. My dad went to the store once and bought a gold and white Epiphone Les Paul, for some random junk he had in his basement. I want that store back now, I only went in there once, and bought a pretty cheap acoustic for a box of old toys.
Okay Glen, here's a three part question: If you could spend one day as any famous musician/producer/engineer, who would it be, why them, and what time period of their life would you choose? Really interested to hear your response, and the channel is seriously helpful!
Back before I was able to buy a proper rig, I only had a cheap 15-watt practice amp, and I used an overdrive pedal as a boost. It doubled the volume, and I got much better sound than using the gain channel on the practice amp itself. So yes. Not only can you use a pedal on a practice amp, but I suggest trying it if you don't have anything better. Keep in mind that you should never try to record with that setup. But it does work for general band practice if that is the best you have. We all start somewhere.
Hey, Glenn I've been watching your videos and you're opinions on bass guitar are spot-on. Especially about getting new strings. Old strings sound like crap and tone is impossible. Very useful to me as a bassist. keep up the good work!
Randy Rhoads sound: MXR Distortion Pedal, Epiphone Les Paul Custom, and DSL 40C. Make sure that your treble is all the way and you can't have any bass.
Speaking of bands that have to be professional during a break up - I was at college with the brother of one of the guys from Fleetwood Mac - now there's a band that not only had lots of breakups, they had to sing about them in their lyrics too!!
one of the best lessons you can do as a bass player is listening. training your ears is key. Ofcourse you can learn all the notes and scales but you dont need to when you learn what sounds good and what not.
one of my favorite bands (the contortionist) uses (or used) the mesa cab clone and they said they love it in rig rundowns, and sound phenomenal live. how could this be?!
Huh, was gonna ask what the hell that was about at 14:47 . . . . but the video description cleared it up for me: *"Stay tuned for the next episode where I’ll be discussing (insert next episode)."*
Glen, love the channel. Was wondering whether you could include the bandname/songname of the background music in the description. The music in this one caught my interest and would love to hear more of it. Keep doing what you love!
Hey, Glenn! What is your favorite comic book? What publisher do you like most? What's your favorite comic book artist (including an pencillers, inkers and colorists - yes, I know you'r a colorblind but I mean the rendering itself, well coloring style, not just bare colors)?
Here's a different kind of question for you: I'm a Warr guitarist (see Trey Gunn's Warr Guitar or the Chapman Stick for reference). The guitar is tuned (from top to bottom of the neck when held like a right handed guitar) in inverted fifths bass BEADGC (with the B being the highest note and the C being the lowest) and BEADGC like the top of a 7 string guitar. My question to you is; could you think of any amps to run the guitar and bass side through at the same time? Both sides have individual pickups and individual outputs, and I use a 2-1 jack cable to run both outputs to the same input jack. P.S. I love how much you rip into bassists. It gives me another incentive to practice (also a 6 string fretless bassist).
i miss the pool hall back home in California, they had 99 beers from all over the world, i got to try a bunch of beer i wouldn't have been able to otherwise
Hey man, I really love your videos they're not only funny at times but they've also been helping me out as a drummer in some ways, anyway I have a question for you, what is your favorite part of recording a band or even just a favorite memory at the studio? Keep them videos coming up man! 👍🏻
What's your opinion on progressive rock/progressive metal (i.e. Dream Theater, Symphony X, RUSH during their 1970s era, etc.), considering that not everything is strictly in four XD?
***** Hahaha thank you for the input. I play to progressive music more than anything at the moment and finding simpler ways to count odd times (be it through saying certain phrases or subdividing a signature, etc.) really would help me so I can apply it in the future. Thanks!
Hey Glenn, have you ever considered setting up a couple of cameras around the studio and recording yourself while you record a band? Like, give those of us who have never experienced or seen something like that a taste of what it's like? I think that'd be pretty cool~
I'm a bass player. I 100% agree with your comments on bassplayers. I go to see some bands and I hear these great songs, and there's the guitarist's special needs friend hammering away on root notes oblivious to what the drummer is doing. dead strings are unforgivable. no excuse. but also, drawing from my own experience, guitarists in rock/metal don't like to see a bassplayer's first finger leave the Fretboard. I've had to literally and figuratively fight guitarists and singers my whole career over this. "why can't you just hit the rootnotes" is something I've heard all too often. when you have the whole band looking at you like you fell from the sky, because you dared to inject melody into your baseline, it can be intimidating. this may also contribute. I was lucky, in one of my first bands the guitarist used to be a bassplayer and really encouraged me to work the bass hard, but mostly an active and accomplished bassplayer forces average guitarists to actually think of something other than themselves, and they don't like it. love the channel, it's one of very few channels I actually check daily for new content.
The first thing that came to mind on that beeped-out part was a "tonewood" video. If that's the case, can't wait to read the comment section on that one.
Could you do a video on how a song should be composed, you the steps and things musicians should think about before they make a nee song? and thanks for the great videos man really helps in getting to know more about these music stuff
any chance of an acoustic version of the eagle has landed song? Its always cool ( at least to me it is) to hear 2 different renditions of the same song. I remember a old friend of mine was playing a heavy metal riff (or I think so) looking super pissed and headbanging, strumming hard on a acoustic guitar. Shit was hilarious.
as far as good distortion for a practice amp, a danelectro fab distortion pedal hooked up to a line 6 mark iv on the blues setting with medium drive gets amazing tone
Damn dude!.. I wish I had known you were in the UK.. I'm not a metaller but an been an engineer for many years and love your advice and channel.. the stories you tell are hilarious and echo many of the experiences I have had with bands also.. If you ever come back over the pond would love to buy you a pint and share bass player stories.. keep up the great work fella
@8:29 Yes, why would an entity with the acronym "SMG" *ever* consider using a submachine gun as part of their logo, right? Oh, and by the way, it's _not_ an UZI.
Hey there Glenn, I'm a fan of your show since your "Ready For The Studio" video that was posted at the time on Ultimate-Guitar! It's great and inspiring to see a person telling the truth and sharing knowledge. I played once with a singer and the next week (last week) with his band, because he loved my lead playing. They're playing his original songs, which consist of simple chord progressions that doesn't intrigue and challenge me technically and musically. I found my challenge writing and performing tricky solos. So here's my dilemma: Should I stay and play with them to experience how it is to be in a band, or should I leave and kinda wait until the next opportunity arrive? I know I MAY get an offer from a different band while playing with the current, but I never know and in the future I could regret my time spent. Thanks for your time and a big shout out from Israel!
I like the logo. It reminds me a bit of the Uzi Suicide logo from an early Guns n Roses album, which looks sweet, but this is way cooler because it has nothing to do with GNR
Hey Glenn, at 11:50 the background music struck me with a video request: "How to record/mix keyboards in metal". I'm recording and mixing my dark metal bands next album where background synths are essential so I'd like to hear your approach. Cheers.
Question: I've been self teaching myself the art of recording and mixing and have learned lots and lots from you, and was curious as to what you think some of the best schools are for perfecting and polishing the art
From experience if you have a small processor amp dont use pedals(the spider 4,my little vox box or similar). If you have something like a fender mustang 15 amp or simlar it should be no problem from my experience
I'm a bass player, when I hear Glenn going off about just how much he hates the average bass player it makes me laugh. This is because its true, There are no born musicians in this world, guitar players included. If you want mad chops on anything you need to practice. If you actually care about what you are doing with your time then do it right. Try to break your stereotypes and become what others wont even get up and do because you chose to play the bass and now its your responsibility to do as much as you can with it. you owe it to your band mates and yourself. I admire any musician that puts the time and the effort to sound good. and those fucking snow flakes that think that they can just pick up a bass and play need to take a step back out of the studio and re-evaluate. Great channel Glenn keep it up!!!
Hey Glenn - cheers for stopping by & it was great to meet you. See you at NAMM & good luck with everything. Cheers!!
Answer this wonderful man Glenn
found the legend
Glenn, you're the only metal guy I have ever seen tuck his t-shirts into his shorts.
He's got dat chub n' tuck going on.
+Crummock iPhail Slaaammmmminnn
Rockin the fupa hard, dawg.
It's because he grew up in the 70s and 80s.
He's gotta show he's a gentlerocker somehow
I'm a bassist, I really don't get why people get offended by a few jokes.
'Cause for some people it's true lmao
I wouldn't say "a few" but yeah, no reason for people to be butthurt
👏🏻👏🏻
Throw a rock in a pack of dogs and one will yelp.
amen
Even though I am an amateur bassist, I don't mind your jabs at terrible bass players because that just gives me even more motivation to practice.
Not just practice bass, but need to be a reliable, competant and professional musician as well.
Oh look, a bassist with a brain haha good on you mate, keep it up 👌👍 you’ll be crushin it in no time with that attitude.
London is awesome. There's a pub every 50 feet in London. I wish we had a pub culture like that.
+Paul TheSkeptic yep. Great food, too!
SpectreSoundStudios Fish and chips. Yummy.

its so cool to see Lee on the channel!
that guy who thinks the gun in the logo is an uzi probably cant tell a les paul from a thunderbird
Yeah, that looks more like a scorpion.
+Mike Rotch I thought it was a mongoose
Mike Rotch
i hope that is a joke
otherwise you must be just as oblivious
It's clearly a Faartbum.
Looks very much like a teapot to me
I find it hilarious that people can't read between the lines regarding the comments about bass players. I like the fallout 10mm smg for the logo, it’s awesome and is kind of like a Easter egg! Keep up the amazing work man!
I was born a bassist. The docs had to cut the E string off me belly button
Jayk333 Only an E string? The docs had to cut a B string in my case
So, you don't have an E string? What fuckin good are you?
I hAvEn'T eVeR cHaNgEd My UmBiLiCaL cHoRd, I gEt a KiLlEr ToNe!!!1!1
"Nobody is born a bass-player."
I beg to differ.
agreed, Victor Wooten destroys that idea day in day out. But as a joke, sure lol
he chose to be!!!
+Oberone Kenobi he was trained to be a bass player from the womb
Dude, the wooten's needed a bass player for the family band. Then Victor was born.
I've always liked the saying, "Most people have lots of common sense because they haven't used any of it yet."
whaaat? the Captain on Glenn's channel?
This channel is pure gold. Humor while learning stuff from a different perspective.
Keep it up Glenn!!!
I actually like getting the bass hate, makes me want to practice more!
Hey Glenn! I absolutely love your channel and, as a guitar player, you've helped me a whole lot. 10:40 That's the name of the guitarist in my band, had no idea he watched this kind of stuff.
I think you are lacking a "Crom's Balls!" shirt.
I've loved the logo from the first time i saw it. Very recognizable and just plain cool. And as a guy who used to really be into flight sims, I enjoyed learning how the Spectre part came about in another video. Keep up the great work!
Definitely good choice for the logo. Personifies your delivery very well Glen.
I feel like since I started watching this channel I know the kind of bass player I shouldn't be and has inspired me to practise and I feel like I've improved because of your criticisms, thanks alot man, love the channel!

As a bass player, I love your channel. Lots of good information and almost as much comedy relief. Kudos.
When I first stumbled across your channel about a year ago I was really butt hurt by the things you said but with a little bit of straight thinking that all changed. My approach towards music and thirst for musical knowledge is all thanks to you man! Keep rocking!
"nobody is born a bass player"
NEW SHIRT! CALLED IT!
What do you do when you see a drowning Bass player?
Throw him his amp.
Can't wait to see the Strats in Metal episode. I used to be a snob about that when I was in my early 20s...learning that Ritchie Fuckin' Blackmore used them was all I needed to shut the fuck up about THAT.
Strats are great for metal especially if you deck them with some hot rails
+Agnaye Ochani Gary Holy huh
strats are super easy to mod so you can use them for basically anything
+Agnaye Ochani he is indeed a holy man
I agree with Macon, I have a Hot Rails in my strat and that thing is crazy awesome haha
"Brought to you by... DistroKid".
Thanks to that, I used DistroKid for our album. So ads that are relevant are actually great.
its not ROCKetscience
its metal
Have you seen GetGoodDrums? For samples they sound great, Matt did such a good performance with the playing... Sounds just like him!
Have you ever worked with that Kontakt library? Always wondered how the room mixing worked with that. Do you bus your instrument tracks to a convolution reverb plugin, or...? Genuinely curious.

Well played, Glenn. Well played.
With you mentioning that your videos are having an impact let me also say that my band has used many of your techniques in the recording of our latest album and although we are still in the midst of making it, the results are sounding great. Cheers!
I think it's funny he didn't use the actual Spectre submachine gun for the logo instead.
Did you ask the Anderson people what they really think about the Mesa cab clone?
hey Glenn I'm a front man/guitarist, used to be the drummer one thing I've noticed that improved the drum sound a lot is keeping the closed hi hat closed really tight instead of half ass closed and rattling like most drummers do
"Nobody is born a bass player" one of the best quotes I've heard.

I NEVER REALIZED IT WAS THE 10MM SUBMACHIN GUN FROM FALLOUT TILL NOW
one of my favorite bands (the contortionist) uses (or used) the mesa cab clone and they said they love it in rig rundowns, and sound phenomenal live. how could this be?!
When it comes to musician advice, you remind me so much of JK Simmon's character in Whiplash. If you haven't seen it, I highly suggest it!
you should try out a line 6 firehawk 1500, Id like to see your take on it haha
Me too.
A year late, but the Firehawk has the same modeling tech as the POD HD, which Glenn has already covered.
So the gun in their logo is a 10mm SMG from Fallout 3. Nice man! Cheers from the Philippines!
Huh, was gonna ask what the hell that was about at 14:47 . . . . but the video description cleared it up for me:
*"Stay tuned for the next episode where I’ll be discussing (insert next episode)."*
Here's a different kind of question for you:
I'm a Warr guitarist (see Trey Gunn's Warr Guitar or the Chapman Stick for reference).
You've got a better chance of finding a good bass player than a band with a relationship staying together when the relationship goes south
Strats in metal sounds like a really cool video. Some Cryptopsy acknowledgements in there?
I sexually identity as a bassist and I find your videos totally offensive. Take your hate speech off of RUclips
Thestonecutters you sexually identify as a bassist? This is why Glenn hates you guys. The stupid comments
It's a pretty witty and effective take down of the concept of hate speech. Maybe it's you that's stupid.
You’re conflation intelligence with stupidity.
@@scottbaxendale323 That's funny.
Your answer for the SMG logo reminds of the interview with Gene and Ace of KISS when was asked why the name KISS.
i miss the pool hall back home in California, they had 99 beers from all over the world, i got to try a bunch of beer i wouldn't have been able to otherwise
Wait, you went to Andertons?! Literally went in there the other day to get some strings... ffs
Hey man, I really love your videos they're not only funny at times but they've also been helping me out as a drummer in some ways, anyway I have a question for you, what is your favorite part of recording a band or even just a favorite memory at the studio? Keep them videos coming up man! 👍🏻
good for you on the subject of sponsorship! sounds like you're a stand up man!
What's your opinion on progressive rock/progressive metal (i.e. Dream Theater, Symphony X, RUSH during their 1970s era, etc.), considering that not everything is strictly in four XD?
For anyone who didn't get the sarcasm, I intentionally red into the 1, 2, 3, 4 drummer shirt way too much.
Look forward to every new video you release. Always interesting and a breath of fresh air. Kudos
So cool you went to Anderton's - their channel is also really good.
I was so confused as to what channel I was watching when I saw The Captain
Yeah I thought YT had fucked up my thumbnails when I first saw this on my homepage lol
Seeing the Captain on his channel makes me so happy.
Hey Glenn, at 11:50 the background music struck me with a video request: "How to record/mix keyboards in metal". I'm recording and mixing my dark metal bands next album where background synths are essential so I'd like to hear your approach. Cheers.
"I will sue you guys next time!" That accent made me repeat the last view words from you :D Greetings from Germany! (Where the accent is really bad!)
Actually it is better much better to use a dist pedal then amp distortion on lower end orange practice amps actually
Haha, that thumbnail threw me for a loop since I am subscribed to both you and Rob Chapman.
*The Chub'n'Tuck is strong with this one! Ethan would be so proud!*
My bass player has a used bass and he hasn't changed the stings since he bought it AND HE'S HAD IT FOR A WHOLE DAMN YEAR!!!
