I worked for an oil and gas company before I retired. I have many colleagues who were mostly engineers from Nigeria, Lagos. When they visited Malaysia for an assignment, I had to find a temporary accommodation for them in KL, and it saddens me that most landlords would outright reject them as soon as Nigeria was mentioned. I had to apologise to my colleagues profusely, I felt ashamed, and they felt uncomfortable. I managed to get them accommodation eventually. My Nigerian colleagues were aware of their reputation here and took this experience in stride. My African colleagues were so friendly, genuine and I have to agree, their culture is very compatible with ours! I am friends with them till today!
I'm Filipino But Malaysia for me is my second home ..I'M THANKFUL FOR ALL MALAYSIAN, MY CO- WORKERS ,LOCAL FRIENDS ARE VERY KIND TO ME THEY ARE NICE PEOPLE ..WHO'S HATE THEM UR ARE VERY WRONG.
Sheii Cube No we don't a Malaysian is so close we usually call strangers Uncles and Aunties. Don't worry no Malaysian has discriminate people for the way they look and don't worry I'm Malaysian I know them alot.
most malaysian dont discriminate.. few does not coz hatred but coz they are bored.. its a stress release for them although it is absurd.. they juz talk but wont touch n wont harm physically..
Sheii Cube to be honest malaysia is discriminative too, at first you might not fit in with the society, but many in malaysia are nice, so if you try to blend in eventually insyaallah you'll find a nice surrounding human beings, haha
hai. i am Malaysian. please be nice o in Malaysia. if there anyone whos look like dont u,it because u dont smile at them.. keep smiling and be humble..
My neighbour next room at UPM Serdang in 2003 was a Nigerian - Michael.. He (always) sang Nigerian song (it might ethnic song) when he felt missing his hometown...
The perception of the locals towards African students is highly dependent on how they want to be perceived. We had 2 african classmates back in collage (a boy and a girl). Everybody seemed to like the boy better because he was a serious student and really worked hard (so having him as a groupmate for a project would be awesome!), the girl however had a complete opposite character (everybody would sigh if we ever end up being in a group with her). It doesnt matter who you are or where you come from, the rule of thumb when it comes to living abroad is to be a little more assertive than your usual self (you make friends easily this way) and create a reputation that is worth respecting.
nice video.. hope u all do well in your study.. forgive those who have -ve perception.. not all people are the same.. bad people, good people they exist in any race, color, country or society.. just stay positive kay.. great
malaysian there is room for improvement...we can do much better... something new is scary but change is necessary...embrace all kindness is in our blood...
Great work. I love the approach of letting the African students tell their stories by themselves. I also like the cutting and editing, with plenty of stills that lets the viewer almost feel as if he is physically present. What I feel is missing is clarification about the plans of the Malaysian government issuing a quota for African students. This information could have been shown at the end of the film to answer the question that was raised by the comments of the protagonists. It would also correspond nicely to the figures in the introduction. Otherwise a very good insight, thumbs up :)
the rule of thumb to fit in any society is to respect their culture n try to blend in with local culture. with this, anywhere u go, u shouldnt have problms
the sad thing is...some africans came to malaysia doing criminal activites instead of studies in colleages.. they claim to further their studies here but once they are here, they do difference things. that is very bad.
In my church, there is a sweet couple, an African woman and her chinese husband. Her children are so adorable! Even though my church is in chinese, she is willing to go there with her children who speaks english and chinese and understands chinese. We usually speak english with her.
Actually in Malysia we already have indigenous people that similarly look like african people... So that why as malaysian we don't think you guys are different.. It remind us for our ancestors... 😋
At a surau (mini mosque) in my area, 40% of the Muslim congregation at any time is Africans. Theys seem like good Muslims, always doing sunat (non-mandatory) prayers besides the mandatory 5 daily ones, they always read the Quran..any time I go to pray here, I have Africans to my left, right, behind and in front of met. But I have no prejudice for them, they're just humans like me, most of all, they're my fellow Muslim brothers..many of them are fine looking, I mean quite handsome, so it's wrong to say that Africans are not good-looking. I am a Malaysian man...
unlike korea, japan, china, taiwan in Asia.. malaysia is English speaking (2nd official language), and we are diverse (CHINESE, INDIANS,MALAYS, ABORIGIN TRIBES).. people of malaysia also Islam, Christian. Buddhist. Hindu..
The Tanzanian ,Nabibian student are serious student that really do their study until the Nigerian come about and cause so much negativity toward African student.
i used to have a nigerian friend in UIA. His name was Abdul Rahman. Was a very good friend.. but always asked if he had got bad smells whatsoever.. hey friends are friends.. we don't judge lah!
First sorry my English no so good.. The Malay don't care who r u Where u from. As long u can respect malay cultural we will Be fine and u alway be a welcome to Malaysia And We don't care what colour of ur skin You must know, if u come to tiger place u must be a tiger If u come to dog place u must be a dog If u come to cat place u must be a cat. --- If u r tiger and u come to cat place, but u still want be a tiger !! The cat will run.and if u make r trouble with cat and cat place, of course the cat will teach ur and hate ur all If one r two we still fine But a lot ,, the not good mate for our culture. Any place we go, we must respect the local culture, N u will be have great warm welcome form local the will be good and nice for u all
We love all ppl in the world but when u coming malaysia please dont bring ur attitude from ur conutry because some act not same with our country,, respect our country so u all will be get more more and more respect...
The negative impression to the African not because the skin color or because the person come from Africa, but those negative impression from the local folks is refferred the several criminal cases done by the African. The negative image about the drink and drunk, mess in public, drug traffickers, money scam and fighting so on. Those frigthening issues resulted the negative impression about the African. Other issues is, the local not familiar and less knowledge about the African. Yes African continent comprises of many states and with different culture, languages and customs and different society structures, the only same things the skin colour is same among the African and the african also with many tribes. Those criminal cases is majority are involving the Nigerian African, no offense, facts as according to our police force statistic most of them is Nigerian. Therefore, to eliminate this negative impression toward African, it is important to the African to promote the African culture, custom and languages and their living structure of each African states in Malaysia so that its will provide the basic knowledge about African to the Malaysian. This will easy to the Malaysian to recognise the African is from which country and easy to understand the culture so that can develop the mutual understanding between local and those africans.
you guys want the stereotype to be broken? easy... learn the language, speak like they do, not proper, street language. you'll be one of them. its all because of language barrier.
In sarawak and sabah, it is so much peaceful than KL because it is so busy there. That is what almost a lot of people told me when they study in KL and over here, it is not that busy. I am not saying it is bad to be in KL, but just that it is much more busy, stressful and a lot of racism happens, they said that it is actually a bit more expensive there when buying things. They also don't have sugarbun😂
Sy pernah jadi mangsa nigerian scammer. Habis 20k .. so we are not discriminating, we are just being extra vigilant. They all look similar (to me). I don't know who is from which country.. so its kinda hard to self project myself when i stumble upon them anywhere.. but if i know them as students i would automatically feel totally differently.. i had a Nigerian friend when i was in college. His name was abdul rahman. He cooked his own food and always invited me to eat together..
