This song is the feeling you get when walking through the light aisle at the Home Depot as a kid
i like when they have all the different types of switches and dimmers on the wall that let you test each function. any time i find myself there now if i pass by that aisle i’ll still fuck around with the switches, lol
LOL
literally just saw you on scratch for your flood post lmao
@@notminty2123 I'VE BEEN SPOTTED AGAIN-
If they ever play this at Bunnings Wearhouse and I'm in the electrical aisle, I'm going to get very excited. I remember once I was in the electrical aisle there, and they played Say Say Say, not the same thing, I know.
A pop song changing key 18 times, most pop songs never change key. At most once or twice, this song is quite the enigma; I’ve been listening to it for years, and I still keep finding little details in this song.
It's not really 18 distinct key changes as much as just constant modulation that sorta breaks the concept of "key". It reminds me of how some music academics argue that Prophetiae Sibyllarum by renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso is "functionally atonal", because it modulates so often, and is so full of extreme chromatic shifts, that it just never settles on a tonal center for long enough that the listener could register it as home key. I love this kinda stuff, my favorite band, Cardiacs also does this a lot - I highly recommend you check out the songs Goodbye Grace, Big Ship, and Dirty Boy, if you like weird pop music that feels like it changes key every couple seconds.
@@norbicsek I definitely feel like that "never having a home" is the intentional message, that the music (the night lite) shouldn't have a home in your life, but it's there to protect you when you're down (weak/young)
It's brilliant song writing, yes
It's a genius song I've loved it since the day I first heard it.
@@norbicsek Dirty Boy is an astonishing song, there's a gorgeous live version on YT :)
This song is pure joy.
Yeppers!
Still, after this many years
This song doesn't even deserve to be "please hold" music on an answer machine.

Fireflies by Owl City captures this energy. It also has a lovely and upbeat video. I am a cynic whose parent raped them, so trust me when I say something is upbeat.

That lyric. "Who watches over you? Build a little bird house in your soul."

OMG I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY ME-
The hook brought you back.
Me too. I love the chorus in this song, it has probably my favourite lyrics of any song I've heard.

It’s 1990 again. And I’m hanging out with my high school friend Bill Thearoux in Westchester California. We in route to Venice Beach and we’re listening to this song on KROQ radio…. It’s been 30 years since he’s been gone…. I miss you brother.
Hugs.

I miss Bill now and never event met the guy ❤️
@Robert Frost - He was a great friend. You would’ve liked him👍🏼

One of my friends had this played at his funeral in December 2022. I laughed and cried. It was so him. RIP JT ❤️

Good song choice
Respect ❤🕊️
I took me forever to realize the song was about a nightlight and the lyric “There’s a picture opposite me, of my primitive ancestry, who stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free” is about a picture of a lighthouse. Love their song writing!
And how a night light would make a TERRIBLE lighthouse.

I agree with you there. It's outstanding.

Absolutely love this song
I would argue this is one of the greatest songs period
I was 25 when this came out. And I loved it.aaand still do.
my family was obsessed with they might be giants when i was a kid, to the point i actually started to hate the music because i was so sick of hearing it over again, but i always actually liked this one.
Every cerebral friend i had loved these guys!
I like this song as well although I am not interested in almost all of the rest of they might be giants songs although there is one other song from them that I like which is the song Istanbul was Constanaple.
@@jfournerat1274 personally ive done a deep dive back into their discography over the past year or so. Its strange because i still know so many of the songs on a subconscious level but only really remember them when i hear them again for the first time in over a decade. Without anyone forcing me to listen to them I find that I actually really enjoy most of their work, new and old, but especially stuff from their very early days up to the late 2000s.
They made a children's album that my daughter adored.
@@lazchurchyard1229 my parents played NO! many a time for my brother and I while we were kids. I think they enjoyed it too.
Fun fact: this song is about a night-light that makes a child happy.
The song is about electricity in general in our every day life.

@@CalridRobnor123srs No this song is about Patrick.

Years and years and years of torture, sleepless night of singing "who watches over you" and trying to even think where I heard it from. Thought it was a theme tune or advert or something. The satisfaction hearing this... I can finally leave the house!!!
If you don't like this, it means you have no birdhouse in your soul.
Well said
I grew up with this song- my dad (he recently turned 50) had DVDs of a bunch of their music videos. I watched their for-kids stuff like Here Comes Science, but this was my favorite in what I called the “Dad’s Might Be Giants” DVDs. I’m turning 20 next year, and this is my favorite song of all time. Dad and I are seeing them in concert in December after nearly a 3 year wait, haha! He’s seen them twice in concert before but this is my first time. This song always feels to me like a message from my younger self to the present day, to remember to always keep my head up and to “keep the nightlight on inside.”
I loved here comes science when I was a kid. I still do, actually.
i'm going to be seeing them soon as well! if you haven't gone already, have a good time! if you have, how was it?
It is indeed one of the all-time great songs. Video is perfect as well. Just doesn't really get any better.
It is unironically a masterpiece
I'm your dad's age, and my son wears a shirt to high school that reads "Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet." I feel like your dad and I may have done something right.
I truly believe this is one of the most underrated masterpieces of all time. I expected to see at least 100M views on this, not 390K, that makes me really sad.
Agreed we now have about 400k so close to 1 mil
i'm doing my part! (enter StarShip Troopers Meme). 20+ views already.
Very sad. This is such a crazy original and catchy tune
there is another upload of this video on youtube with 6.6 mil views! ❤️ i was thinking the same thing!
This was only uploaded a year ago.
Birdhouse In Your Soul was the highest charting single in both the US and the UK for They Might Be Giants 📈. What's your #1 They Might Be Giants tune?

I gotta go with Don't Lets Start. I remember hearing a lot on KROQ in '88. I thought it was REM at first..
Your Racist Friend. I used to play it at work to make the boss feel uncomfortable..
Man I love so much... I have really fond memories of Dr worm though :) so I'll go with that
This is it. We played it a lot on Live 105 in San Francisco!
I'm glad I got to see them live at least once in the 90's. This is such a feel-good song.
They still do shows... ❤
I saw them live in 2020 😁
You can still see them live. I have tickets for the spring
I saw them lastnight, they played the entire flood album plus some!
Oversharing but it made me so happy to see them playing their oldies, i grew up with my mom lkstening to them *im 21* and accepted at a young age id never see them live. I stole her Appolo 18 merch shirt so i was finally able to give her a new one in return 😂
@@tweetybird1496 Got my ticket for their October show in Sydney.
A very underrated band. Always make me warm and happy listening to this.
might be a little basic to say, but i do think this is one of my favorite music videos of theirs. it's so creative and silly, and the dramatic lighting motif with linnell is so interesting!
But basic is fun! The simple, yet splendid.
they might be giants, (this song in particular) are the biggest hidden gems of the 90s. they deserve way more love 💕
I used to have a DVD of ALL of the TMBG's music videos. After I lost EVERY MATERIAL THING that I owned: my house, my truck, my musical instruments, my furniture, my clothes, E ERYTHING. THAT is the thing that I miss the MOST!
SO HAPPY TO FIND THIS HERE!
Thank you for posting this! 😊
“Say I’m the only bee in your bonnet” is truly one of the most romantic lines ever
this song is unhinged, i don't understand a single thing it's saying, it's my first time listening, and i love it.
It sounds insane if you're trying to figure out the metaphor and meaning. Once you realize it's pretty much literal (the narrator is a blue, canary-shaped night light in a child's room), it falls into place.
The word choice is still phenomenal.
its very simple: your nightlight wants to know that theyre your friend but not actually your friend but they are also its a good thing theyre not a lighthouse bc theyd suck at that job btw make a little birdhouse in your soul
Some friends introduced me to They Might Be Giants when this album came out, and I've always loved this song. More than 30 years later, I've finally gotten to see the music video.
I had this cd as a teenager (still do) and this is my first time seeing the video
I remember this from back in the day, had a lot of radio aiplay. Great if not utterly bizarre record!

@@normansantonio1230 In this context "if not" means alternatively or contrary.
They've made about a hundred more albums, all equally fun. Worth a listen. ❤😊

Why is the world in love again? Why are we marching hand in hand? Why are the ocean levels rising up? It's a brand new record for 1990: They Might Be Giant's brand new album, Flooood!
it's quite interesting that I have just learned that this song has a massive amount of 18 key changes throughout its 3:16 minutes! and I was obsessed with this song when I was younger, used to listen to it on repeat, but at the time, I knew nothing about music theory, still love this!
It all started with James K Polk... Fell instantly in love, absurdity juxtaposed with intelligence. It's like musically talented punk rock with smart lyrics and I was all there for it!
TMBG have the funniest and most ironic lyrics and catchiest melodies in all of pop music for 3 decades and running. They deserve the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame unquestionably. T
I love this great song 🎶

Beside all else, nice of Blue Canary to explain it all so plainly for us with this ditty
Flans' guitar part is like a cross between a bass line and a counter-melody. This song is the embodiment of my childhood.
This is my favorite song by TMBG, I first heard it on Dr. Demento in mid-1993. Before that he had played "Particle Man" and "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" which I also liked, so I was already a fan of their music. This song just happens to be the one I like the most!
Just saw them live in Charleston, SC. What an amazing show. They killed

Don't know why but this song always gives me a lump in my throat and moist eyes. Engages my emotions somehow.
I know. It was my favourite song when I was ten. I'm forty-four now and I get mixed emotions listening to it.
I suddenly heard this come on the radio in my car, i asked my dad what the music was called and that was how this became my all time favoutite song. Now everytime I hear this it reminds me of that wonderful adventure.

Right here. Patiently waiting for you.
I saw TMBG for the first time in '93, in Central Park, NYC. I think it was the first tour where they had full band, and they ate Pere Ubu and NRBQ (with whom they shared the bill) alive. I was just a casual fan at the time and looking back, it was one of the most memorable live shows I've ever seen. I sat next to a woman who had dated one of the Johns. She was smart and kind of buttoned-down---exactly the kind of person you would want them to date.
I got to see them in 93 or so in Houston for like 20 minutes. The venue oversold tbe show, and the fire marshal shut it down. Some of the best 20 minutes of my musical life.
Actually, The Three Johns are much funnier.
This is the fucking greatest thing of all time.
