  • The small seaside village of Kalkara and is all too often overlooked by people who visit the nearby three walled cities of the Cottonera. Lying just outside and on the furthest side of the Cottonera walls it is in fact quite easy to overlook. Nonetheless Kalkara is an interesting and very picturesque addition to this corner of the island. Kalkara stretches out along the creek in Grand Harbour which bears the village’s name. Originally serving as a summer resort for nearby villages, in time Kalkara grew enough to become a community on its own, with a population which now numbers around three thousand. Kalkara’s distinguishing feature is its long association with the British Navy - best exemplified by two of the town’s notable buildings.

    Great video Steve and so good to see a part of the old Royal Naval Hospital Bighi, (Villa Bighi,) is no longer rotting away. They were all such beautiful buildings. I love to go through the old parts of the villages to see the homes that have been restored or rebuilt using many old traditional styles. It is lovely to see building that still screams "Maltese" and not just square and concrete. You can have both styles together with a good architect for the facade.

    Hi , thanks for your excellent quality videos, you must have a good camera.i lived in Malta as a boy, in fact i started school in Verdala infants, my father was in the medical branch of the Royal Navy and was posted to R N H Bighi, one of two Royal Navy hospitals on the island (the other being David Bruce ,Mtarfa)I did stay overnight in Bighi to have a tooth out when i was 7 (1960) great memories down the beach every day when picked up from school at 12:30 .I have visited Malta about 4 times since, and i am still in touch with the family who house was rented by MOD from them, the Sultana family(Zabbar)and now the Michaleff family, Mr michaleff senior, " joey the tailor "made military uniforms in his shop in Kalkara.i will have to look them up again when all this covid is over.cheers again for your interesting walks,stay safe ,Dave.

Steve I recently wrote to the Maltese Government concerning the crappie barriers they have around the new parliament house in Valletta asking if they could remove or replace them with something more fitting the look of the building and I got a reply saying that they will pass on my comment to the house of Representatives 😀 maybe I just got lucky . Another great video Steve, I remember driving around Kalkara in 1992 trying to find how to get to Kalkara Creek so we could dive on a wreck there. Its where we met the man that looked after the cleanest public toilets in the world, he had flowers and statues and even decorated mirrors in there, He was a character that i will never forget and have fond memories of him shouting Kalkara, Kalkara with the biggest smile on his face when we asked him it this was Kalkara Creek. I think the wreck was called the Odessa or the Odile or something like that.

  • @GoranMak
    @GoranMak 3 года назад +2

    I used to live in Kalkara. That beautiful building beside the church and is where the parish priest lives. As you started going up Triq Rinella you went right past the old Jewish cemetery behind that wall. The old church stood in that whole open area where Joan lives. I used to live right across the street. However the church was bombed and destroyed during the war. Not fire. That monument with the pillar and doves was designed by my ex-partner Ivan Cauchi, and it represents the people of Kalkara who's homes were bombed and/or who were buried under ruble and lost their lives during the war. He also designed the monument beside the marina to commemorate Pope John Paul's visit to Kalkara.

Mallia-Milnes(an expert on Knights of Malta) that's how Kalkara got its name, because the knight used to quarry and get their lime from this peninsula during the rebuilding of Birgu, Isla, and Bormla, and the buldig of Valletta as well.
