- There are over 36,000 McDonald's locations all over the planet, and the chain is on every continent except Antarctica. In South America alone, there are over 1,400 stores. But there is one Latin American country that flat out rejected Big Macs and McNuggets: Bolivia. Watch this video to find out why the American fast food chain had to pull back from the Bolivian market after five years.
The first Bolivian McDonald's location opened its doors to the public in 1997 in the city of La Paz. It was met with a lot of hype. “When McDonald’s first opened in Bolivia - I remember there were people waiting hours in line and in the drive thru to get to try McDonald’s for the first time.”
By 1999 the American fast food chain had 6 stores in the country. Its menu was tailored to reflect Bolivian tastebuds. The fast food chain offered things like “llajua” - a Bolivian hot sauce that was made out of tomatoes and locotos hot chili peppers. There was a tea made from coca leaves.
McDonald’s even tried to introduce the “McSaltenas” which was a spin on a traditional Bolivian dish known as the “Saltenas." Saltenas are traditional Bolivian empanadas that can either be filled with savory or sweet foods, but it ultimately did not reach the Bolivian market due to McDonald’s safety standards

In Bolivia we have Burger King, Subway, Papa Johns, Starbucks, KFC, Cinnabon and a Hard Rock Cafe. So we're far away from being anti american franchises

@Douglas Ducote while I'd rather get real tacos down there when I go, I'm just saying that Mexican city kids aren't afraid to branch out every once in a while. Perhaps one thing CNBC could mention is that it was poor timing on Taco Bell's behalf to start business in Mexico way before Taco Bell created these wacky recipes for their menu. Then again, we Mexican people value our traditions so much, we cringe every time we see these upscale "Mexican" diners try to make certain basic plates like tacos and enchiladas like rich people food and gouge their customers financially just to make them feel fancy.

As an actual bolivian and someone who lives in La Paz I can say that it has nothing to do with politics. It surely was because at that time the country was really poor so the mayority of people couldn't afford it. And there's a lot of options for food here, cheap, fast and delicious so McDonald's wasn't really needed when it comes to grab something fast to eat.

It's really pretty simple: When I lived in Cochabamba in 2000, A McD's meal was the same price as a full three-course meal at the Swiss restaurant across the street. You could get the same hamburger meal at the Bolivian chain Dumbo for half the price. McD's was among the most expensive 3 or 4 places to eat in the entire city. (But if you wanted to meet Mormon missionaries, it was definitely the place to go.) But seriously, Coca-Cola being banned??????? Did they just make this stuff up?

But yeah, Bolivia has a lot of different food options, from fast food to street vendors preparing food for you. My favorite is definitely salteñas

I strongly disagree with the reasons mentioned in the video explaining Mc Donald’s failure in Bolivia. There are many factors to discuss, but I believe that rather than just focusing on the country, culture, society, there should be more questioning on the company itself. It is true that, food market, at the time, was not used to high prices for fast food. Also, as an effect of globalization (internet, social media) Bolivian society, as other societies in the world, is today more open to new experiences instead of being price-focused only. But, why did Mc Donald tried to open 6 restaurants? 3 in only one city? Why not remain targeting the middle class only, specially during the late 90’s, which were years of severe economic crisis in Bolivia. There was no rush to expand, eating mc Donald’s was an experience, it was never about the flavor. WHY TODAY IS BURGER KING STILL DOING BUSINESS IN BOLIVIA?? The same with SUBWAY, STARBUCKS, KFC, etc.
FOR SURE THE FAILURE IS NOT BECAUSE OF EVO MORALES, EMPANADAS, OR BOLIVIAN PEOPLE BEING PROUD OF THEIR MEALS!!

As a Bolivian, who lives in Bolivia, this video is way off base in today's market. We have a growing number of franchises (and more coming in) and their sales most definitely show that timing is everything

Bolivian here. Pretty amazing how they managed to get so many things wrong (not to mention the pronunciation of Bolivian dishes). McDonald's needed to lower their prices to still be competitive, that's all there is to it. The burger prices were twice or three times more expensive than they were in the US, which obviously is ridiculous since people make much less money here.

Many of the explanations given on the video are not convincing (as an example please consider that Burguer King has been in Bolivia since 1999, now with several locations in three different cities) I would say that their fault was more on the side of the business model; such problem that was only slightly analyzed, and other reasons were not addressed at all. As a Bolivian I was interested in the video but it left me with a little bad taste in my mouth since rmany of the images and assertions are innacurate or incomplete.

The comment that McDonald's was not culturally accepted is false, all of the McDonald's restaurants were purchased and repurposed into Burger King restaurants oh, and they're still doing well nowadays. Very expensive but it's still considered a luxury dinner for those who can afford it

Well, I lived for years in UK and also a McDonald's meal costing 6 dollars very expensive for me. I was working in a factory.
The places that built Mc'Donalds now are Pollos Copacabana or Burger King, that's the one thing that they made well.
At that time I used to live there... McDonald's failed because was really expensive...like 2 work hours...it was clean and everything, but it couldn't win people's hearts...Bolivian food is delicious..full of flavors and spices.and McDonald's was just fast food

As far as hygiene goes, I repeat myself, it depends where you eat. Born and raised in Santa Cruz and I would certainly welcome mcdonalds again. We currently have BK, KFC, Hooters, Papa Johns, Sbarros, Subway, Starbucks, Tony Roma’s, TGI Fridays, Hard Rock Cafe, Johny Rockets. People forget we also had Dominoes pizza for a while and it also failed. Both mcd and dominoes failure was due way more to timing rather than culture and bolivians being too proud of our food to accept usa franchises (or from any other country for that matter). If mcd returns I’m sure they’d have a successful business. Will that happen? Time will tell I guess. Rumor has it that wendys is a sure thing as well as PF Chang. I’d like chik fil a to open here as well. I mean, I go to bk from time to time, but nothing beats a double 1/4lbs with cheese and a 10 piece nugget to go along with it.

This is SO wrong. All western food chains are expensive in Bolivia. McDonalds in Mexico is cheap. In Bolivia, it is same as if you paid for it in California. Bolivia has two economies. Local blue collar and international. The comparison of local food prices to a western food chain is like comparing iPhone sales to the cost of flip phones. I can go on and on. This article aggravated me more than it should have. P.S, Papa Johns is killing it in Bolivia. $18 USD for a large pizza.

I would like to highlight how people on the west say homemade food is expensive, but that's only on the west. Not in other countries.
I grew up in Mato Grosso - the state that borders Bolivia in central Brazil - And I remember that I had never had McDonalds until I visited Santa Cruz in Bolivia. It was the closest one to where I lived, weirdly (we visited Bolivia on vacation, not just to go to McDonald's lol). I thought it was this fancy American restaurant that only rich people could eat at often... So crazy how that perception shaped how I viewed American culture too.

You cant compete in markets where you can get the same food with better quality for a fraction of the price. In my country a mc donalds menu costs the same as dinner at some restaurants. You can get a burger twice the size for a third of the prize anywhere

I don't think poverty levels among the general population have too much to do with it, especially when operating a limited number of chains in affluent areas, given income disparities are usually huge. Mexico has a similar percentage of people living in poverty, but has over 400 McDonald's locations. It's also very popular with emerging middle classes in places like China and India, where local food options are widely available and also significantly cheaper.

Dear CNBC, you made an interesting video here, but sadly its plagued with at least 14 mistakes about Bolivia. I am a bolivian, and let me tell you, not all my country is La Paz city, or El Alto (the info you mentioned doesnt even apply to this cities as well, not to all people at least ).
We dont consider food "sacred", or go to "cholitas" to buy our food (they sell on markets but here we have lots of supermarkets too), we didnt ban coca cola, we even have uniques Fanta flavors like apple or papaya, and even the poorest worker to the richest man here drinks coke. We didnt "replace" it for typical drinks... they exist but actually when you invite somebody to your house, you buy a Coke since its a mark of status.
MacDonalds was a huge success here, specially in Santa Cruz, to the point that even now people is asking for its return, the last days the rows for buying the burguers were nearly 2 block long! It failed because it was expensive , thats true. Here in Santa Cruz you can buy a bigger burguer in 2 dollars, so a 5 - 6 dollar option is not a fast food, its a status symbol. I think Macdonalds didnt research well about prices, and thought that they will be the number 1 option here, which was impossible, but it wasnt rejected as the video tells. And about Evo Morales speech in UN, he does this and more as he pretends to be a natural loving president, but doesnt mention the atrocities he does here with real indigenous, and how my country´s resources are slowly being sold to China and exploited without any care for people or nature.
Please research better next time, as its quite easy for somebody that doesnt know my country to typecast it and its people , and thing about us as noble savages or naturalist indians which its a lie. Not even the true indians here believe in nature to such an extent as the current goverment tries to show.

I'm not from Bolivia but I see the same in all Latin America, local burgers, call it street ones or local burger places, have way more flavor than McDonald's, the local places make their own meat with different recipes and gives you quite a flavor experience while a Big Mac it's just flavorless, those types of burgers are sell as expensive Gourmet in other countries, for Latin America that's just a regular burger

The thing isn't hygiene at all my guy, we actually get the most natural and unprocessed food around. Even though cows are literally like next to the suburbs, we have ways of getting healthy food. More and more people here are getting on the vegan trend and since anything can grow here in Boliva, it is a booming market. Street vendors are always going to be dirty, hence the word street.

Interesting! Ive been to Bolivia recently for about two weeks and spent New Year’s eve there. I went to Santa Cruz (liked the city a lot), La Paz and Cochabamba and of course the amazing Salar de Uyuni and I can attest to what the video said I was surprised I didn’t see too many fast food restaurants there but lots of local food restaurants and my first question was: Why was it? Now I have the answer! There were a few KFCs and Starbucks though. I also lol’d when I heard Antichuchos! :) Greetings from Perú!

Exactly, I could get a regular meal that could get me full for about 10-15 Bolivianos. The food doesn't taste bad either, so there's no point in spending so much on McDonald's food

From Santa Cruz, Bolivia here. My parents took me to the first McDonald's that opened in Santa Cruz near El Puente Urubo. It was an experience for sure, but to get a meal for $20 (which was a lot money back then, in 1998) it was not worth it.
The local burgers in Santa Cruz were Tren Rojo and Toby, the second one is still funtioning and was the local direct competition of McDonalds at the beginning. Fast food it is inexpensive here, and since those years fast food has grown tremendously with new local and international franchises.

Her features, speech and concise responses were frozen like an ancient sphinx. The psyche of the Bolivian native people is largely intact despite colonization .

FYI, Burger King is now just as affordable or cheaper compared to any mid-range Bolivian restaurant chain (Tuesdays, Globos, ETC.) Also, Burger King doesn't taste like chemistry set food like the golden arches.

Come on people, McDonalds has a place in this world but having lived there in Bolivia is something else. The streetfood is some of the best in the world. I've been in the far east ,Europe and live now in the U.S. But today I still miss La Paz . Saltenas by the Stadium with the flaky dough and a bottle of Centenario , that's heaven! Their salads by the train station, the best! In El Alto the Fricasse with Hominy, the best. I can go on and on. I liked your video but it was incomplete.
You forgot to mention that an In and Out Burger opened right across the street from every failed Bolivian McDonald's. That pretty much sealed their fate.
