- KFC has tried, but failed, three times to appeal to the Israeli market. Starbucks, Subway, and Dunkin' have all had to call it quits in Israel, but unlike its rivals, Yum! Brands' Kentucky Fried Chicken is refusing to admit defeat. The American fried chicken chain is looking to enter Israel for a fourth time.
Watch this video to find out why the American fried chicken chain is planning to try a fourth time to enter the Israeli market.
Israel seems to repel American fast food chains. Starbucks; Subway; Dunkin Donuts; They've all had to call it quits there. KFC has actually tried and failed three times to appease the Israeli market. But unlike its rivals KFC is refusing to admit defeat.
In fact the American fried chicken chain is trying again for a fourth time. The calculus reported that KFC plans to open 100 locations within five years of re-entering the market. That's especially ambitious considering that at its peak it had just ten restaurants in the country after spending 20 years trying to build a following.
KFC started as one branch in Tel Aviv in the 1980s. It didn't last, but was revived in 1993. Ownership then changed hands again in 2003. But by 2012 Euro Monitor says KFC had closed up shop for good. In Israel KFC is failure isn't all that shocking because of one simple but very big problem. Its menu.
Israel is a notoriously difficult market to crack because roughly 60 percent of the Jewish population keeps kosher meaning they follow a set of religious laws that restrict them from eating certain foods. One of the major rules don't mix meat and dairy products and that happens to be the very definition of classic Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Not Jewish, never been to Israel... but I do remember Kentucky Fried Chicken before it became "KFC" and more importantly, I remember when the Colonel was alive. His old employees have said he was in the habit of visiting random franchisees' restaurants and sampling their fare. He took quality control seriously. After his death the numbers men took over and started looking for ways to boost profits. The end result is available at your nearest KFC, and trust me, it's nothing like the original.
frankdn my grandfather who lived in Lexington, Kentucky also said that he lived there and that the potatoes and chicken are much different now
Your story explains a lot.
I remember a KFC in a local mall here in Israel before it closed. It was notoriously bad. Then it closed. End of story.
KFC doesn't taste the same as it did back in the 80's and 90's.
There's something missing.
Are they cutting costs and leaving out some of the 11 secret herbs and spices? Are they trying to save money?
There are other brands of fried chicken or what is offered up as "southern fried chicken" which tastes way better than KFC these days.
The thing with profits over prophets, is wherever there is a profit there is deficit. Wherever there is prophet there is excess. I'd rather live in abundance than scarcity.

With so much wonderful flavors, you'd have to be crazy or stupid to eat the garbage sold by Starbucks or KFC.

From personal experience, KFC was very expensive in Israel. WAY more expensive than it is in the states, people didn't want to pay such high prices and that was probably one of the main reasons KFC closed down in Israel.
It makes you wonder if the KFC tasted better over there

Most Israelis are Europeans and that is a fact.
There are many Israelies (like me) who don't keep kosher and many places where most pepole don't keep it.
we also have many restaurants who aren't kosher.
@KiLLaKonTroL 99 There is nothing as "Kosher pork", you either go to a restaurant that serves it or you won't find it anywhere that serves Kosher food.
ron zach exactly, the problem isn’t kosher it’s that the food isn’t good and Israelis know what good food tastes like
as an Israeli the reason kfc didnt succeed is because of the food there are places were the food ins't pre prepared and is really tasty it takes more time but in Israel when you go eat even in McDonald's you would usually stay at the restaurant and eat inside

I can think of another reason: Israel has a huge "Schnitzel" culture (Breaded chicken breast), and honnestly, even a standard Schnitzel in Israel is very decent. The good Schnitzels in Israel are simply EPIC. So KFC may think it has a shot, where really the competition is fierce. Another important point: Schnitzel in Israel is often eaten in a baguette, which KFC does not offer. I think they are doing a huge mistake and it will never work.

As an Israeli I can tell you that you are wrong. That's not the reason. We simply have way better street food here. Most of the people I know don't eat kosher but they will not eat food like KFC simply because it's garbage.
I'm sure the abundance of cheaper street foods has something to do with it as well
Street foods? Pauper foods
And what about the 40% Jews that dont eat kosher? KFC needs to pick the cities where kosher meals are not so Important to the majority. Many people here in Israel love the original KFC (with milk) and stopped going to KFC in Israel because of the change.

This report doesn't get the point, it's not about kosher. KFC and the others fail in israel for 3 reasons:
1. Israel has the best and most fresh street/fast food in the world.
2. Israelis just won't eat a bucket of deep fried chicken. In the Israeli culture that seems quite disgusting.
3. It is too expensive like everything else in Israel

We learn something new every day. I was wondering where the dairy came in. I never knew KFC was made with milk powder. hmm..
Hmm?
They used to have commercials where they would show chicken pieces soaking in milk, and that is why I have never eaten it.
Well I never knew they switched to using milk powder .... I thought everyone knew that KFC chicken was always soaked in buttermilk for a number of hours before being coated in the flour and spice mix.
The soaking in buttermilk is what keeps the chicken moist and tenderizes the meat. Otherwise KFC chicken would be horribly dry when its removed from the pressure cookers they use.
A lot of TV chefs and RUclipsrs have also mentioned soaking your chicken in buttermilk in the refrigerator for hours or over night prior to coating and frying.
Same here.
Now I want a KFC...
same thing with vietnam, in fact fast food restaurants are hard to compete when you're dealing with countries that have well.... very convenient street food vendors. not to mention most fast foods are either based in far away locations like the city for example

Jesus probably observed these dietary laws himself.
lol so they can't eat buttermilk chicken, yet when KFC switches to a soy based coating the consumers are like "it doesn't taste the same", how would they know that in the first place.
that was my question too. It is my understanding that fast food chains often adjust their recipes to appeal to the local cultures/tastes. It may not taste exactly the same, but as long as it tastes good, then it shouldn't matter if it's slightly different.
And then, to have a Pizza Hut owner comment in the video! I can't imagine a pizza without both meat and cheese, yet somehow Pizza Hut thrives in Israel? How is that possible? (Sure, I enjoy a margherita pizza, or mushroom and spinach pizza, but a good sausage and pepperoni pizza is delicious). And there are strict rules about even separate kitchen utensils being used for meat/non-meat products, so operating a kosher PH must be very complicated.
Because the people who like KFC are the people who don't keep kosher, and have eaten KFC abroad, when KFC came to Israel, it was very overpriced, so the people who liked it abroad ate it only once or twice, and those who keep kosher couldn't, KFC thought that they don't sell enough because it's not kosher, so they changed the formula, and that was disgusting. So both who do keep and don't keep kosher didn't like it.

In Tel Aviv most people don’t eat Kosher. And the problem was also the prices were way too high.
@Morbidcrab More like Gaza City. And many religious Jews there like in any other Israeli town. A very middle-eastern city
I hate how all these American fast food companies just don't give up and keep trying to enter a market that said no many times, like they want to push and push until the completely destroy local cuisine and culture... I hate globalisation sometimes. Wherever you're from, or if you're travelling, eat local and try the country's original cuisine. Don't consume fast food from these global food chains, unless you find yourself in America.
What if we love fast foods. We don't always want to eat rice or spices. It's limiting and quite old fashioned with that insular mindset. Fast food is like the special treat especially pizza, hotdogs, burgers and wraps which is something like a reward of one's favourite or comfort foods from the regular mundane foods of meat, vegetables and rice. Whatever your food preferences, they are just food and flavors that cater to a certain demographic that likes quickly prepared comfort foods on the go especially in urban areas. How could you hate Western foods like fries no matter how tasty, delicious and tempting they are? I thought it's hard to resist the temptation of crispy chicken, bbq wings, buffalo wings, waffle fries, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, corn dogs, submarine cheesestakes, apple pie, etc. The thing is fast food is not just American. There is Yoshinoya, Mos Burger(Japan) Pasta Mania(Italian inspired), Delifrance, Pezzo Pizza, Sarpino's Pizza, etc. sushi or Stuff D tacos, wraps and burritos could be considered fast foods reflecting foods from other cultures. Salad Stop and the Soup Spoon are not quite American but are also modern quick service food outlets. The worst fast food outlet however is Kakak Cafe in Toa Payoh Central bus interchange. Their chicken rice, mee hoon goreng and nasi lemak sucks so as their chicken franks, hash browns, fish cake, fish fillet, chicken nuggets, wings, green beans and cabbages. Not all fast food is bad or good but it all boils down to personal preferences and taste. That being said, the first options to dining or eating out when travelling overseas is to try out the local cuisine first.
Isn't odd that before I watch the video I get Mcdonald's ad.
Cant compete American guns with uzi
The market here is becoming more and more unkosher

Israel has a lot of vegans which could explain KFC’s failure there
They happen to have vegan options. I only visited a kosher McD there
McDonald’s has real meat? doubt it
It's unlikely that that's the reason. Yes, Israel has a lot of vegans, but it also has a huge number of meat restaurants (including in Tel Aviv where you'll find most vegans). It probably has more to do with the fact that Israelis eat tons of chicken at home (as stated in the video), and they want something different when they go out to eat.
Nah, that's the kosher thingy

China
As jewish, i can explain why KFC's market will never work inside israel.
1. The price
The price of KFC in israel cost almost x2 more money form the price in the state,
My theory is that KFC's price highers cuz the replacement that thay did ot save the kosher market costs more then the original flavore.
2. KFC is based most of the time about chicken, and from what i heard in the state, chicked is a thing that they eat most of the time only in holydays
While in israel we have at home a lot chicked daily, what's make the chicken more common so people don't want to waste money on that (cuz like i said in the start, it's also costs more) so we avoid to waste money on things that we alredy jave at home, if i want i can make fry chicken myself.
That'a also why mecdonald's market worka here, they sale mostof the time burgers. (They also have that chicken burger but we used to make jokes about who waste money for that.
And ye that's it...
I typed it in the toilet the whole time so...
Ye BYE
Chicken is eaten weekly by most Americans.
@@QuietQuakerASMR we eat it daily :>
wait.....KFC mixes milk powder with chicken..... *staring at the screen & contemplating life choices*
How DARE you refer to Israel outside of a political context, as if it's a vibrant country with actual vibrant life loving people with street food culture! How dare you.
* was Fascinating!
israeli food companies are so good they don't need foreign ones
That means they eat burgers without cheese, meatless pizza and only vegetables lasagnas right?
How did the patrons know that the milk altetnative doesnt taste as good as the milk based powder🤔
Exactly🤷♂️
*Israelis in general do not eat much fast food. They have a very high sence of helath, and in addition, the fast food is very expensive in Israel. from personal exp...*
@First Last it was a militar budget not a civillian supoort ignorang
@Shelly Korol That is probably a big burger. I just checked the exchange rate and it's more like $13 or $14 for a meal. Even so, that's still expensive. So, for KFC to make it, they will have to have food good enough to justify the expense.
explain that to all the land whales roaming the land eating fried humus LMAO 😂
no the money we get is all for the idf not the people
You'd be wrong.
People here consume even more carbs than Americans, most lead a more active lifestyle than the average American and kosherness supervision has health inspections as a side dish so there's less harmful additives like antibiotics.
The average BMI is 26, and seeing how skinny pressure is alive and well here, I'd say the median's higher.
Well, I wish them luck getting here
😉.
3:45 that guy has such a cool and interesting accent
How would they know the kosher taste was different if they couldn't eat original recipe in the first place?
It's funny, because KFC is a really big thing in the West Bank :D
Good that some countries are rejecting garbage fast food!! We should ban then like we banned tobacco
Tobacco isn't banned
Which country banned tobacco?
@@shabbirnaqvi1344 londonistan
American here...we have the freedom to eat unhealthy fast food and it's in the Constitution- this post is satire!
We should ban you too for being garbage. BANNED!!!!
