Replacing 2002-2006 Toyota Camry Rear Speaker Covers(Easy Way)

- I made a video to show how to replace the camrys back speaker covers. The dealership wanted 200 dollars to do this job. Luckily my mom wasn't dumb and let me take care of her problem. Speaker covers can be purchased from many reliable ebay sellers, online stores, and even at your local Toyota dealership store for about 25 dollars. I have found that sometimes the speakers will come loose over time and not be seated flush. To solve this go to your local hardware store and purchase these for a dollar or two. 2ndfloorliving....
If you have any questions I'll do my best to help you out.
Take care!
This is NOT a hassle if you look at other videos as to how to replace the speaker covers. The other way is ridiculous! Thanks man, for the easy fix!
I would not have fixed my speakers without your help. Thank you for taking the time to make this.
Thank you SOOOO Much for this! This is my 3rd Camry and I've never had the covers deteriorate before. The dealership wanted $300-$400 to replace and I couldn't believe it! My handyman will get right on this now! I've had the replacement covers for over a year just sitting there until I could get around to it. THANK YOU!
The janky, rear speaker covers in my '04 Camry were also disintegrating. Thanks for showing me an easy, low budget fix! I can't even change my oil but I think I can handle this one :) Thank you so much!
I watched another video where it seemed they took apart much of the car just to replace the speaker covers. So I was so very happy to find your much easier video. A+ Thank you so much for posting your video. :) for the ones that stuck in, we just put in a screw in and then popped it out with the piece that was stuck.
Good video, really helped. A couple of tips after I did this myself. You can buy either tan or gray speaker covers. I needed gray, and it was a good color match. I paid $18.75 for the pair on Amazon. It is far easier to punch the broken pin residue ( from the old covers) down rather than to try to lift them up. I'd use a good flat sided wire cutter to clip the broken pins as flush as possible with the back deck mat. It isn't easy to get access to the pins to punch them through, because the rear window creates a pretty tight space. I cut a 3 1/2 inch 16d galvanized flat head nail down to about 3/4 inch, and then used a needle-nosed vise grip to hold the shortened nail. You'll only have about two inches of clearance to the window for a hammer blow, but that's enough to gain acceleration to strike the nail. For the rear holes, I'd tip the nail toward the cabin a bit to gain a little more space. There is a subtle difference between the right cover and the left, so if the pins on the new cover don't align with the holes in the rear deck mat, switch the covers. Good luck!
Great video. I used a small chisel to pop the original mounting posts off. Then drove the stubs down. Vacuuming the little pieces of plastic out was the hardest part. I put on some bass heavy music and got the little pieces as they popped up.
I purchased my covers from Amazon prime ($20.00). After going through 3 page installation instruction, I gave up and planned to take it to a mechanic or dealer shop. Before I do that, I wanted to check online. Boooom, your video a life saver, saved me 80$ labor cost. THANK YOU. very much
Very glad to help!!!
Same as others.... Amazon purchase......your video was a Lifesaver.......plastic posts were a pain...... Saved me lots of time and money and really helps improve the appearance. I truly thank you!
I thought I was the only one that had this problem. It throws off the look of the car. Thanks for sharing this post 😊
Thanks for making and sharing this great video. I only wish that the original speaker covers were as sturdy as the 5 posts on each cover. The hardest part of this task was removing or pushing down the broken posts.
The cat's meow was hilarious and so was the honesty throughout the video! Thanks for the post!
Thanks for the video. Took me about an hour but its hot out so took my time. Used a flat head large screw driver to remove the cover, Once you popped the first peg the rest were easy. Vacuumed out all speaker cover residue. Cut the pegs with diagonal pliers and used a stubby phillips head to pop out the pegs. Banged the pegs with the stubby using the rubber handle of the large flat head to drive thru. Any peg residue was removed using the stubby phillips head. Only one gave me some difficulty. Popped in the new covers, fit like a glove. Got on Ebay for $20. Look great. Thanks again Taylor for the video. Saved me time and aggravation.
Thank you for the video. I had the speaker covers for three years but since it didn’t come with instructions, they were just sitting in my closet.
It was nice to be able to do this on my own.
Great video and tips, Thanks a lot. :)
One additional tip for everyone: I used a brand new drill bit to create new holes in the broken off posts that would not push through the rear speaker deck. Can't use a drill with the bit because of the rear windshield & even if you could, it is not necessary and might cause other problems. Just use your fingers to hold the drill bit, push down a little onto the broken off plastic post of the old speaker covers & turn the drill bit clockwise with your fingers. The plastic is very easy to cut out with a new drill bit and you'll be surprised at how little time it takes to manually drill out the few holes that are plugged with the old broken off plastic posts. :)
That was super quick, I was hesitating to start the job after seeing the traditional way, as it would have taken me couple of hours.
Your video saved the time and effort.
Thanks for the easy way, and happy with the savings both , money and time.
This helped me a lot. thanks. Just replaced it. took 40 min. in all. For $20 it was a good investment to restore it back.
Thanks for this. You helped me out. Due to how the old grill's pieces/parts looked all crumbled up, I found myself strangely craving Chex cereal (which I've not had for years) during cleanup...
Just picked up an 06 and this was happening to the covers, thanks for the tutorial you saved me some time.
Excellent video, this way is much better to replace the grills. I just did it and it took me 15 minutes for one speaker. And you don't need to put any glue because it fits tight. Thank you, you saved me 2 hours of labor by doing it the other way.
We got them removed and vacuumed out last night. We have three stinky clips we have to get rid of but we ran out of time. Will get to them today. The new ones are sitting on there now looking great and my speakers sound perfect again. Thanks again :)
Thanks for making the video; it gave me the confidence to make this repair myself. Followed your video step-by-step - went like a charm. Looks great, thanks!
OMG...at 1:14 you cracked me up big time, "Jesus Christ, what a hassle". That was the best. Great video. Gotta fix the wifes speaker covers and you gave me insight on how to do it. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. I used a pair of cutting pliers to cut the stubs which did not break off cleanly. Then I used a stubby Phillips screw driver and a hammer to push the stubs through. Hit screw driver as straight as possible (less of an angle) - this may take several wacks.
That is exactly what happened to the 2 speaker grills on my wifes Camry 2005. Toyota should made it easy to replace these craps, they use sun sensitive parts to the sun exposed area of the car. They burnt the legs to the base board so it will be hard to replace, dealer tried to rip me off $80 labor fee. I did the same thing you did but I glued it on mine. Thanks for the video, it will help a lot of Camry owners, they too have the same sun untolerant speaker grills to replace soon.
Thank you for making this video. It helped and now my wife's car speaker covers look good. Keep up the good work.
Perfect video. Classic quote: "Jesus Christ, what a hassle!". But, it was only $20 on Amazon to get the new covers. And, as someone else mentioned, I used a screwdriver to loosen the portions of the posts that remained in the holes, and then I gave a couple taps on the screwdriver to push them through. Thanks so much for all the help!
THANK YOU! The dealer wanted to charge me about $1000 to replace the entire back panel because "they don't make just the speaker covers." THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you so much for the video! You have saved a lot of people a lot of money!
Thanks for video! I found using a wood chisel to level out the old posts and soldering iron worked well to melt out the remnants worked well to remove old posts. Took me about an hour to remove old and replace with new grills ordered from Modern Toyota on Amazon.
Great vid man, my camry has same issue, gonna do this!
Thank you! Nice and slow, for the beginners.
Thank you sooo much for this video! I'm a woman and was able to change my speaker covers in less than 30 minutes, thanks to your help.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. It's obvious that it's part defect! It's ok to have some defect part like this. But it's not ok for car manufactors for take responsibility!
I bought a 2006 Camry that had the rear deck speaker covers all broken out. The Dealer only wanted $20 for a pair of replacement covers, that I thought would be a snap to replace. Turns out the factory installed them from the bottom side of the deck, with no access. After watching this video, I decided it couldn't hurt to just break off the old covers and go from there. Getting the plastic out of the holes was the hard part. Be careful not to scratch the deck or the rear window defroster. 3 of the 5 broke off easily and dropped into the area between the top of the trunk and the bottom of the deck, but I had 2 on each side I could not get out. I finally used a right angled drill and drilled down threw the middle and popped the last one through. The new covers are tight to install, and I had to force them into the old holes as they don't seem to align perfectly, but it makes it nice because it seems to hold the covers in position with no clips required. Took about 30 minutes to break off the old ones, vacuum up the junk and slide the new ones in place. Great Idea. Thanks.
Superb! Thank you for taking the time to film and post this...and your "jeezus christ, what a hassle" comment made me laugh out loud! Thanks again!
Thanks, Taylor D. I would have never done this the "By-the-Book" way! I varied my approach, but basically the same way. Thank you for the easy way!
tyvm sir, helped me out a ton, saved me from highway robbery
actually good video ! it was just the covers but there was more there than i originally thought !
Really good video, I appreciate the tip on how to replace the speaker covers. Thanks
Good thing you waited on putting on the covers! Glad I saved you money and take care!
I agree. My mom has never talked badly about the camry until this haha I think Toyota should have free replacement of the back speakers since so many people run into this problem. When my mom said they wanted 200-300 for the job, I laughed and told her to let me take over =]
Thank you so much, Taylor for this video . Just replaced on my 05' Camry speaker grills today aka factory installed speaker girls - the nearest thing I can compare those too is waffle cone . Everything went alright, like you said at 2:21 - getting out that extra plastic was hard!!!! The replacements don't seem totally flush (bought on Amazon), so I plan to follow the link you provided. But other than that, God bless Taylor, sound is good. Other tutorials tell you to take out seat assembly and all that....:Nope
Your the best all done very easy
Changing the rear speakers on my 03 Camry was a pain in the ass!! Can I get a witness? LOL.
Thank you for the video. I replaced one cover today after watching your video couple of times.
I did this today and the video helped. After prying of the old ones, I used a chizel and haet to knock of the fastener, then a dremel grinding wheel to sand off the remnants. Finally, I used the 7/32 high speed grinding bit (looks like a fluted drill bit) to drill out the remnants below the surface. Finally, I used the same bit to elongate the holes as the cover I purchased was slightly larger. Otherwise and easy project. 30 minutes.
fuck off loser what you did is just the basics a 7 yrs old kid can do
Loser ...
Thanks for this! I was on the right path and needed the tips.
Just returned from installing the new speaker covers. My son and I did it in about 45 minutes. Thanks!
It always erks me when auto makers can just put a removable panel like the ones on my old Honda Van 03' that was so easy. I have a Civic now and I can't find any video on how to replace them.
thanks a lot that was a very helpful video
when i bought my speakers covers i couldn't figure out how i,m gonna install them
To help push the "pegs" through the deck cover, I took a piece of 1/8 inch steel rod and bent one end at a 90 degree angle with the short part of the rod about 1/2 inch. Using the side of a hammer, and holding the tip of the short end against the peg, one good whack and down it went!
Took me less than an hour to do...and I'm really not that handy. Thanks for posting!
thanks man, speaker was buzzing last couple days. so I looked today and its falling apart. 2005 camry. Weird. good to see the video. ebay 23.50 for set.
hey thanks alot for the reply, I got it done this weekened and it wasn't to bad. I found another video that showed how to remove the front door and it was pretty easy as long as you get all the screws out, the back speaker were done kind of ghetto to begin with when i bought it so I just kept the same locations just changed the speakers and it works just fine. thanks for trying though. by the way it's an 02' Civic Sedan.
Excellent video, never thought it was a common problem, Thanks...
any advice to keep those newly installed grills stay firm? i mean they come off easily
thanks for making this video! i didn't know it was a common problem
Thank you for this easy but not so authentic method. I just replaced the grills in my old Camry using your method. To pop out old ones I inserted a flat head screwdriver and used a plier (or a piece of metal) under the screwdriver to apply a lever effect. To push these plastic nuts under took more time. For some of them I had to use small screw driver to destroy it badly so that in the end can push it under the hood.
Removing the old, fragile covers worked by tugging on them. The studs that anchor into the package shelf are resilient. Once the grilles are removed, you'll have one or more studs to deal with.
You've got to work them and pop them down their holes. I used a set of 5"-long wood routers and phillips screw drivers to do it. Also did a little drilling to perforate the studs I'd sheared off. Once all are down, a short phillips screwdriver blade should penetrate the hold by an inch. Take your time!
Awesome Video. Saved me time and money. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. I haven't done it yet but I just ordered the replacement for 24 dollars in ebay (grey and no shipping) but Amazon has them for less if the color is beige. I removed them and vacuum. I did not even try a dealer I know how they are. THANKS!!!
Thank you for your help good job
I was getting ready for you to glue it
I pulled off the old covers, cleaned out the holes with a sharp tool, checked the fit of the new covers, vacuumed the speakers, put hot glue from my glue gun in each hole, snapped in the new covers, all done looks perfect, in solid.
easiest way to get the old speaker grill posts out is with side cutters. just cut them flush and then pop them out
dont know if this will help anyone but taking a battery to the leads of the speaker will cause it to pulse outwards if ++ and --, if u do it reverse the speaker pulses inwards. isnt damaging to the speaker and a quick way to determine the positive and negative leads
Thank you Taylor!! This was great!
Cats always love to be in the video XD
i pulled up the broken tabs with a pair of pliers( nips) and then pushed a nail set into the hole to clear the way for the new cover studs. hope this hepls anybody with this common flaw from toyota
Thanks! I was able to fix mine! so happy!
Thanks for this vid! I was about to go to the dealership. Both of my are destroyed. I'm going to try and buy the covers on Amazon.
Yep, me too. Just bought a pair for $19 shipped on Amazon.
seats after I pulled them down. 2 remove clips, you are going 2 need upholstery and trim removal tools. U can get them at your local auto store or at Harbor Freight. I also found that the Aftermarket Pioneers didn't fit the factory hole. I had 2 use the factory speakers as templates 2 make custom wooden adapters 4 the aftermarket speakers. I have 2 say, they worked quite well. (cont->)
Thank you Taylor. So helpful.
Very welcome!
Thank you very much. You solved my problem.
Glad I can help you all! Thanks so much for the replies and thumbs up everybody!
Hi, what is the name of the thing that you purchased so the speakers will not come loose over time? I can't open the link. Thank you for your informative video.
You're very welcome everyone! I feel great to know I saved you all a bunch of money with minimal work =)
Perfect. Thanks
unless you want to pull up the whole rear panel, this is the way to do it. there are no access screws in the trunk area. $23 on ebay ........thanks for the video!
Thanks so much, extremely helpful.
@MrSCABIES Same with mine. It takes some strength to pull them out. Don't worry. You can drill out any remaining plastic left in the holes if broken off,
Those Plastic Toyota Grills are melted to the rear cardboard decking from the legs. The melted plastic legs act as rivets. I put some Pioneer Aftermarket 6x9's into my mother's 02 Toyota Camry, to replace the flimsy factory speakers that were making ugly noises. Man............I gotta tell you!! Doing this is a pain in the rear if you live in South Texas. I had to pull off the side seat cushions, remove the side rear curtain airbag cover's and detach clips and plastics behind the (cont->)
No problem! Glad to help
Oh...........and when connecting them, I didn't know the polarity on the factory speakers. But I found that the RED wire is positive, and the BLACK wire is negative. If connected reversed, the speakers would distort. I hope this helps u Toyota owners out there. I had 2 do all that just to unscrew some filthy, crappy a-- factory speakers.
Are you, by any chance, Walt Jr. from Breaiking Bad? Because you sound like him.
How did you put those little fasteners on the other side of the speaker grill to hold it in place ? Thanks
Hi, nice video, My speaker covers are currently shot and need replacing. I am thinking of replacing the speakers too. Would it be better to replace the speakers first and then replace the grills or does it matters. If I have to take the grills off again to replace the speakers, I may as well wait until I replace the speakers, I figure. If I don't have to take the grills off to replace the speakers, I may just go ahead and replace the grills and do the speakers later, since the speakers still work but the grills are in bad shape
Thanks for the video Taylor D.....
Thanks and very easy job. Your video is very helpful. :)
Love the kitty! Super cute
@1thess523 I agree.... Sometimes changing speakers or headlights on cars nowadays is frustrating and very time consuming. I had to change my buddies headlights in his 05 nissan altima and to do that, I had to remove the front wheels, wheel well guards, and carefully reach up through the frame.. What year civic and model is yours? I'll try to search and find a write-up on speaker replacement.. Cheers
@Xclibur2001 What a job man~~~ I would never think changing the speakers would be that involved. You think they could make stuff easier so you can do more things yourself like cars back in the old days. Old cars were like legos haha So easy to take apart, modify, customize, and put back together
Take care
I didn't know it was either until I hopped online.
This is an ok vid you you are one of those people that is happy with a half-assed job on a car that you don't care about. If I am going to spend my time I would do it correctly. The way its done here a simple speed bump could dislodge the grills.
I'm literally in the middle of this right now. For something that should be pretty simple, it's such a pain in the ass. Thanks for the video.
You are very welcome.
If they do not hammer down inside the car(which is fine) you can grind them down with a dremel like device. Let me know if that helps
Thanks for the vid!
Don't even try to get into where the speaker legs are burnt, you will have to take off the whole back board before you can reach where these legs are burnt (palstic to plastic).
