  • Alexander the Great - The Rise of a Legend
Wiki: Alexander III of Macedon (Greek: Αλέξανδρος Γ΄ ὁ Μακεδών; 20/21 July 356 BC - 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great (Ancient Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας, translit. Aléxandros ho Mégas, was a king (basileus) of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon and a member of the Argead dynasty. He was born in Pella in 356 BC and succeeded his father Philip II to the throne at the age of twenty. He spent most of his ruling years on an unprecedented military campaign through Asia and northeast Africa, and he created one of the largest empires of the ancient world by the age of thirty, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history's most successful military commanders.

The Persian version of His-Story is rife with the tragedy of barbarians who came along to destroy their amazing culture.. they called him "Alexander The Devil" in Prof. Michael Woods excellent BBC series " in the footsteps of Alexander"... ultimately he got sorted out and sent scurrying back by the Indian rulers of Punjab and Haryana with a poisoned arrow embedded in him.

For me, it is either Thales ( the first scientist in history, the founder of natural science, what a breakthrough), or Themistocles ( he not only defeated the Persians but had to convince the people to say ok to his right plan! deciding the right action was not enough! but in a democracy he had to convince the many that it was the right choice to make the ships), or one of Socrates-Plato. Or one of Kleisthenes-Solon who founded democratic system. Or one of Phillip-Alexander because of the impact of spreading Greek culture. All of these people had huge impact.

"The Great" comes from the title of the kings of Persia. "Great King".
Since Cyrus, all Persian kings inherited the title Great King. To get this title you had to become ruler of Persia. When Alexander be came ruler of Persia, he got the title of Great King. Even Seleucid rulers referred to themsleves by this title in official documents.
That title evolved into "the Great".
People like Pompey (who never ruled Persia) wanted to imitate Alexander and he had the title "The Great" bestowed on himself...and he set a trend.
Pompey was given that title for being a successful conqueror.
Alexander gained the title as it came with his new position as ruler of Persia.

    • @tylerdurden3722

There wasn't really a battle to lose...and there wasn't any losing of territory.
Alexander led his army to initiate a siege on Pelium. Which was surrounded by hills on the one side and a river on the other...and it was difficult to get in and out.
Alexander walked into this trap. When the defenders of Pelium withdrew into the town and Illyrians took positions on the hills, Alexander realized he just walked into a trap. Then he did what no other commander would have been able to do, he walked out without losing a single man. And then he slaughtered the Illyrian army.
To trap, means to make it so that the victim can't leave. If the victim leaves, then the trap is a failure.
If the victim not only exits the trap without losing a single man, but also slaughters your army in its sleep two days later...I don't see any success there for the Illyrians.
Plus, no vast sways of territories were lost or gained during this engagement. It all happened around the town of Pelium.

Philip Appears At Sparta. When Philip wrote thus to the Spartans: If once I enter into your territories, I will destroy ye all, never to rise again; they answered him with the single word, If.
Philip nor his son Alexander the Great attempted to capture the city. Philip is also recorded as approaching Sparta on another (?) occasion and asking whether he should come as friend or foe; the reply was "Neither". As bold and insulting as they were, Philip still steered clear of Sparta.
So yeah. The Spartans really did taunt Philip II of Macedon with a single word or two, indeed.
Philip eventually decided to bypass Sparta as it was a poor region and not worth the fight. Neither Philip nor Alexander attacked the Spartans while they ruled.

Not on his level because Greek culture spread so far but Genghis Kahn is an honorable mention.
Where as Alexander like Frederick the great had his father build up his army and nation Genghis had to unite his people from scratch. 2 different but the same stories.

Genghis khan had an incredible hatred for China for many centuries that they invaded the Mongols and did not allow them to unite
Khan, piece by piece, united all clans he was worshiped by his people and for his enemies he was ruthless his army was perfectly trained many innovations and adaptations from the battlefield were perfected by them.
The soldiers were all treated well and trained to be disciplined and respectful
This Man's army fought on three fronts of the world, as far as we know, and probably never lost the battle,To this day, half of Asia and some Europe have his genes.
