      The Persian Empire despite some negative propaganda by bias Historians, ancient and modern, was by most accounts quite a fair and tolerant Empire. The Greeks in fact highly admired the Persians for their achievements in many academic fields, and had a healthy respect for Persian culture, basing many of their own ideas and philosophies on Persian thinking. Iran/Persia is a very old Nation with a long and rich history, and as a European myself I have always been drawn to its splender. It was Alexander the Great, after all, who was said to have remarked that "let none in Hellas who have never seen Babylon ever let claim these people to be next to us barbarians."

    This truly shows the power of discipline , skill and structure in an army . They were able to overcome the Persians numbers. What a moment it must have been when the Greeks started at the vast numbers of the Persian horde but realizing that failure was not an option . Their survival and their way of life was at stake and this was all or nothing. History is incredible.

    Nice video! I love to study about the Persian Wars!
    With the exception of Thebes and Argos, virtually all the major Greek poleis (cities) contributed with the Greek war effort during the Greco-Persian Wars!
    The Greco-Persian Wars, in fact, represented one of the few periods throughout the entire ancient Greek history, including the Archaic and Classical periods, when virtually ALL the main Greek poleis came together, at least militarily and politically, for a common goal: defeat and expel the Persians! During the Persian Wars, the Greek world became ONE (Μόνος), putting aside its ideological and/or political differences. Athenians, Spartans, Corinthians, Megarians, Thespians and even some few Thebans fought side by side!
    During the Greco-Persian Wars, in my historical analysis, all the four main factors that defined the Hellenic "identity", as it was defined by Herodotus, stood out during the conflict:
    • 1) "Same blood" ("Ομαιμον");
    • 2) "Same language" ("Ομόγλωσσον");
    • 3) "Same gods and sacrifices" ("Θεών ίρρυματα τε κοινά καί Θυσίαι");
    • 4) "Same customs" ("ήθεα ομότροπα").

    This was like a partial precursor of Cannae. The flexible and weaker center retreats under pressure, the flanks with elite troops envelops the compressed mass of enemy troops. It was missing the cavalry from behind, but here wasn't necessary and the retreat pretty much impossible due to crowded mass and the sea.

      tyson thao More accurately it represented how Greek warfare was better suited in Greece as the Persian military strengths come from mobility via cavalry and archery. There is a reason why the Classical Greeks were usually defeated by the Persians elsewhere (less rugged terrain).
      That being said, the Persians were a minority in their own army, the army mostly comprised of other ethnicities fighting in their traditional forms, including the Greeks.

    • @alirezat9218

      tyson thao first dont think with herodotos book...secend i think the weather beat the persians most they didnt exept that rainy weather,of course greeks defend well...and after persian beat the greeks and reach athen.the city was empty so they burn it to ground...then alexander came and attack persians ,alexander is not greek he is macedonian facts ...the persian commander aryobarzan hold them for 30 days with only 300 persians at the persian gate battle...that means the persians was badass as well and after that alexander died 2 years late and his soldiers go back to thier land. So they are even...let me say something else persians and romans are the greatest history i ever read...and persians just dont have hollywood to make them movie like 300 if you read persian history you would have love them...and i dont know where are those hate come from...i love every culture and i respect them as a persian and mostly as human...thanks💜

    Ok, so in 507 BC Athens did present artapherenes with “earth and water”, and it wasn’t until Darius invaded mainland Greece that Athens, Sparta, and Eretria refused. Right before Darius invaded Greece there was one city state that agreed, and that was Aegina, but Athens and Sparta pressured them to withdraw there pledge. That was the last straw for Darius, and he began his invasion after that. Before marathon Eretria was sacked, and every man was killed, while all the women and children were sold into slavery. At marathon the Greeks were led by a council of 10 men, so each day the command of the army would change hands between these 10 men. The Greeks were supported by 400 Plataean’s hoplites, so the total army came to 10,000 men. While the Persians had about 19,000 infantry, and 1000 Calvary. The Greek charge spanned a distance of about 1 mile. At marathon the Greek center did collapse, and Persian soldiers were getting through the Greek center. The Greeks on the flanks routed the wings, and then they closed the circle, to make one fighting unit. At Thermopylae there were also slaves, and other helpers with the Greeks. There’s so much more, but I’ve already wrote a lot, so ya lol.

    One thing I dislike about your video is that you assume that t was told in a way that implied a cohesion between the Greek city states. This was far from the case. Each city state was independent with many having webs of alliances and enemies between them. Persia was not targeting the entirety of Greece in the Greco-Persian wars. The Persians targeted the Ionian city states, and then targeted Athens in particular due to their assistance given to the Ionians. The rest of the city states in mainland Greece only roughly banded together because they felt their independence threatened by Persia

      you and we know very few about the common history.If you read the greek (Roman/Byzantine) and Sassanid history you will be awed.There were even numerous movements uniting christianity with Zoroastrianism that were spread even to the far China.The Sassanids gave settler to the greek Neoplatonist philosophers who fled the Byzantine persecution of paganism, they forced the greeks upon peace treaty the return of them to their homelands with guarantees from the byzantine palace, Procopius refers to Khosrow II as man who spoke the greek fluently, result of his high education.The Achamenid empire did few compared to the Sassanids.Also the greeks united their mythology with the Persian, they claimed Achamenes as a son or grandson if I remember of Persieus the son of Danae daughter of the Mycenaean king of Argos, she was a major person to the greeks in a way the Greeks had taken the name Danaoi as national identity.If you see the last days of the Sassanids, both states are almost identical with christianity and greek language in Byzantium and Persian and religious freedom in Persia.Both had similar laws, the Byzantines were a bit different as they were Roman laws from the days of the Senate, but in general we are talking about the same state in moral and ethical terms, empires who had education,the mind of the men as basis and were guardians against barbarians who were willing to bring civilization back to the stone age...

    In 394 BC with the Persian naval victory over the Spartan (allied to Egypt) fleet at Cnidius permitted setting up a fortified base at Kythera off the Peloponnesus and raiding the Spartan homeland at will. Thus Persia broke the Spartans ending the Peloponnesian War with a Persian victory and control of the Aegean.

    The Greeks defeating the Persians was one of the biggest underdog victories in history. It was unfathomable and should NOT have happened. An equivalent today would be a country like Portugal stopping a full blown invasion by the USA. Such was the magnitude as Persia was a superpower at that time and the Greeks a tiny, poor and in the face of Persia, insignificant people. David vs. Goliath indeed. Had the Greeks failed, the Persians would have likely overran all of Europe. Who could have stopped them? Other European tribes such as the Germanic and Celtic tribes were primitive at the time. Rome was a small village. History would have been very, very different and western civilization might not have been what it was today.

    • @rohamghalamchi4046
      @rohamghalamchi4046 3 года назад +3

      Well I agree with your statement but considering that Persians were the first nation to invent human rights in Acheamanid era, Europe could have been even more civilised than what it is right now and it could have definitely stop world wars from happening. This also does mean that there could be a lot of civil wars happening if this was the case, or even conquering Europe could even make Persians to conquer east such as China or mongolia before the Mongols attack, we truly don't know what it would have happen but with the odds that I can see if such a thing happend the world would be more developed than what it is right now

    As a matter of fact, West didn't enjoy Greek democracy. They had to endure Roman dictatorship for two millennium . The only people had the chance to practically demonstrate Macedonian democracy or Aristotelian democracy for at list 500 years were Central Asian ( Sogdian ), Bacterian (Afghanistan ), Parthian (Iran) and Entire Silk road from Antioch to China, Entire Syria, Phoenicia and Egypt before Roman conquest. By the way. Where do you think that Cyrus received his culture from? Why no Greek noble and philosopher or Greek people of Ionian coast and islands or Pontus and Paphlagonia had no problem with his ruling and his culture? Have you ever read Xenophon? Do you know people of Ekbatana ( Now: Hamedan ) overthrown last Medes empire king Astiages and rendered power to Cyrus? Do you know Darius I committed the biggest and the most bloodiest coup of The ancient history? There was 16 uprising against him from eleven Satrapies. He defeated all of them in two years with all wealth and soldiers that he could gather from Egypt and his Phoenician ally in Levant. Around 400 BC., there was a movement in Persia by Cyrus the younger to revive Cyrus I era and his way of Governing. Xenophon as we know was a friend of Plato and both of them were students of Socrates. Xenophon Joint the movement with Socrates and Plato's permission. Xenophon was not poor and he did not need to fight as a mercenary. Ten Thousand Ionian cavalry man joint Cyrus the younger to overthrow the seating Shah in order to establish a government and a ruling power based on The law of Cyrus I. No wonder Socrates was accused of favoring eastern barbaric Ideas against Greek democracy.
