      I'm always confused, i read the german book/tale of the "Nibelungen". Equal to this story, you don't know what you reading, until you see some "one of a kind" trope, and it hits you. Trojan horse? Hagen? I know that, and then, you realize that in every fiber of our culture, there's some of the old. You can't erase the past to that degree.

      Wrong on all points. See my post above. Besides leaving out critical elements of the story (like why the Trojans didn't tear open the horse to make sure there were no Greeks inside), there was no attempt to research and depict the ancient Mycenean Greeks and Trojans as they would have actually looked like at the actual time of the Trojan War. Instead the Greeks look like they were copied from the Spartans in that totally lame "300" comic.

    Difficult to think of the epic as just mythology. The characters seem too real. In Hinduism, there are epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. It has been more or less established that the Mahabharata war did happen. The Trojan War is similar. It seems so non fictional. The portrayal of the gods and demi gods could just be deifying of superior humans.

    Agamemnon sacrificing his daughter for his own hubris must be one of the saddest and most heinous parts of the iliad.

    • @ThePaganSun
      @ThePaganSun 10 месяцев назад +4

      It wasn't IN the Iliad! It was part of a slightly later Epic Cycle and since in the earliest versions Iphigenia gets saved, it was no more heinous than Abraham almost sacrificing HIS son. And he did it not for hubris but because the goddess Artemis (or a prophet claiming Artemis) demanded it.

    When you hear this (a much more dedicated to telling the story in its original version) it's such a different and more rich story. Troy the movie for whatever reason cut out or left out bits critical to the story. Hearing those bits in here makes you think ohhhhh THATS how it was meant to be told hey

    one could argue that Odysseus doomed them all the moment he hatched the plan to subvert "the will of the gods" by manipulating Helen into choosing Menelaus instead of allowing the goddess of love to do her work. If Helen had not used beauty as her deciding factor, she surely would not have done it again when/if pretty as a picture Paris arrived.

    I like to imagine this is just the story people made up to explain a time when all the warriors left for a couple decades. Like the whole sea peoples stuff, I could totally see there being a famine or something and a bunch of Greeks(along with a bunch of other island/seafaring people) went out to plunder their neighbors for all the riches they bragged about having. Taking over all islands, Ugarit, the Anatolia coast, before getting stopped at Egypt. What was left limped back home to find their kingdoms in ruin and possibly invaded by other groups from the north. Writing practically disappears for a while and when it comes back we get a story like the Illiad, totally fictional, but I like to think it was based on a survivor who made it back telling super embellished stories as to where he was and what had happened to him over the last couple decades away. Like if Bilbo left the shire for all that time with the dwarves and they didn’t actually experience any difficulty at all, but when Bilbo gets back in the shire he makes up this whole Lonely Mountain adventure story to tell to young Frodo.

    This story was so much more epic than the one they told in Troy the movie.
    Netflix or HBO should do a 1-3 season series on this event ala Sparticus. Could be epic with the right people in charge.

      If I were him, I would've told the goddesses that because of their selfish and heartless nature, none of them are worthy of the apple. And instead, I'd declare Oenone the winner of the apple, as she'd have already given me the greatest gift I'd ever received: her love. Then I'd tell them that I don't care what kind of punishment they try to throw at me, because it'll only serve to prove my point.

      @@JStryker47your saying that with the benefit of hindsight. If you were a simple sheep herder and wandered into a cave and saw three gods asked you who was prettiest you would fall to whichevers offer interested you most. For Paris he was seduced by Helens image. and no doubt influenced by her love mojo haha. I could see myself simping for helen too possibly. I mean having the most beautiful girl in the world would definitely be nice yeknow lol
