I don't think Kira is implying that m2k and pp are noobs obviously, it was just examples where they did it and got punished for it. Just because you're the best in the world doesn't mean you'll always play correctly.
Me too, well i started playing Melee in 2006 but returned in 2013 so i'm considered pretty new especially to melee since i got back playing 64 and Brawl in 2013.
+SkaterLauro It's good if your opponent has shitty movement. Nair (if it wiffs) has high end lag, so if they dash dance out of the way or just shield it, you're left severely vulnerable because Marth doesn't have very fast secondary options to cover himself (the fastest options you have are grab, jab, or d-tilt maybe, but your opponent should be able to squeeze in a punish like dash dance grab before you can execute these). That being said, when I play friendlies it can work, but that says more about the level of play me and my peers are at then anything.
+GameDroid98 sorry but that's wrong, nair autocancels so there's only 4 frames of landing lag, and when shuffled it's 3 frames more but it's really safe and you can instant act out of the autocanel nair. I would recommend nair towards them and immediately dash away behind them. That's not easy to punish.
It basically entirely depends on their spacing. If you notice on the video, Armada and Leffen are basically in the tightest spacing possible to not get hit by approaching nair. If they are in that space, it takes 4 frames to land and Marth's fastest move (jab) comes out in 3 frame. So 7 frames at fastest, which if you're capable of pulling off tight spacing, this is not a difficult punish window, especially since approaching nair and fair is essentially the same spacing, but nair has no opportunity for mixups. However, if they are too far away from the nair when it wiffs (lets say a dash length or two away), then yes dash back or another option would make it relatively safe. It's just why would you do nair when you can do fair? With fair you can do double fair to catch approaches if you don't fast fall it, or you can fast fall the first fair and then do a grounded option. And then you have all the drift options available to you, as well as the option to mixup between a high or low fair, where as nair takes too long to have these mixups.
I see your point, fair approach is indeed better. And I realized i basically don't really approach with nair at all, I use it to keep them away by putting out this hitbox with low landing lag, and as you said it's pretty good when there's some distance. I still think an occasional nair approach is pretty good. It's hard to cc and if you get the hit it leads into a lot of things, although fair and dtilt should still be the main approach. Also I like to not approach and make them approach me. Oh and I need to look up marth's dash frames do you know them by any chance?
+SkaterLauro Typically whenever I'm looking for frame data, you can Google "Marth Melee frame data" and the smashboard thread that contains it should be one of the first results. There are also some apps that have animations of frame data that let you slow down and look at the animations in detail if you have an android device
things to focus on as a Marth player: Movement (dash dance, SHIELD STOPS, AERIAL DRIFT) Spacing (forward smash, up tilt, grab range) and no forward smash is NOT a terrible move.. just don't spam it. Using too many up tilts is basically doing the same thing as using too many forward smashes.. just mix em up
Should I make any adjustments to this when facing Link? I've tried a ton of different approaches in that matchup, but Link seems to have an easy answer for all three approaches you mentioned (dash-dance grab is hell to try on Link, especially on small stages). Marth also has a pretty laggy spot dodge, so I'm wondering how else to deal with Link's projectiles and advances without overusing shield or using spot dodges that open me up to punishes.
+Josh Proctor You can use shield just fine as long as you act out of it quickly and close the gap. Honestly you can take 1 or 2 projectile hits and even up the percent easily, can even CC the boomerang at closer ranges. You can also swing at the boomerang to hit it away.
Can you also CC bombs? My friend is slick with his bomb usage and it's pretty much how he sets up all his combos. I've gotten in the habit of not using a lot of CC. Swinging makes sense. I forget how much damage Link's projectiles all do, but could forward tilt clink or stop all of them?
you can CC bombs but i think it would just be better to shield or avoid them, they can only travel in certain directions. you can ftilt or jab or fair all of them pretty sure
+SSBM Tutorials hey, just tried to find some videos of the matchup. I watched tai get destroyed by germ and the moon get beat by saus. Even in the matches they won, they were almost always losing until the very end. It looked like the moon had a lot of trouble with it, and he's one of the best marth's right, correct? I found a video of PPU beating a Link I'd never heard of, but he still had trouble. I couldn't find any videos of M2K against Link. Do you know of any I could find? There's only so many Links that are even close to his level.
Can anyone help me in the neutral against falco i find myself getting lasered alot or/and when i shield the lasers the person i'm playing begins to lay down shield pressure which i'm not sure what options i have against multi shines and waveshines. I know powershielding is a good option but what other options are good?
+lunaticbugz if the falco doesn't know how to get real low lasers you can just dash in and d-tilt. your dash goes under laser if the falco doesn't get em low.
against good falco/fox shine pressure you don't have many options. i think your best bet is a well timed roll. the moon has a marth tutorial where he goes into this a bit, it's on youtube.
+lunaticbugz Do not, I repeat, DO NOT LET FALCO LOCK YOU DOWN. This is really difficult and takes a lot of practice, but every laser you shield or dodge you should immediately wavedash out of shield or in some way get out of that situation before Falco starts his shield pressure. Once Falco starts his pressure on his shield, he is in an extremely advantageous situation. If you notice Falco is lasering a lot, try going to a platform and waiting there. Eventually the Falco will get impatient and come to you. Or if they do a laser from across the stage, either shield the laser, let it hit you, or jump over it, then wavedash or dash toward them. If you have 20XX, practice moving out of shield while a Falco repeatedly lasers.
GameDroid98 Thanks i figured out after a while while in tourney to beat high lasers duck under with down tilt or dash attack. and just jump over and forward air to lower lasers (if falco is near that is)
if it's spaced even a little bit then you won't be getting shield grabbed often except in the ditto because dtilt covers way more space than most grabs
You say to not approach with nair, but what about a retreating nair? If you do it at the apex of a short hop it ends so there's no lag. It's usually pretty solid
This is a vague request, though...There are many situations in which you might call an offensive option, ex (punishes, followups, edgeguarding...and more).
Sean Tran if you have fast hands then I would prefer using the control stick and A rather then the c stick. I can use the c stick but only going from left to right. I cant do it going from right to left. so it depends on whats more comfortable ig
Question: if they see you approaching with down tilt, then wouldn't they just wave dash out of shield (or short hop double jump cancel Nair if you're peach)?
if you're from that far away sure, but it's pretty fast and hard to react to. Also you wouldn't want to wavedash out of shield I think they want to do an aerial over it (depending on character ofc). For example peach would rather do a low float just above the dtilt hitbox and nair rather than a double jump cancel
Fsmash in neutral is not that bad. It's a decent mixup against opponents who like to DD out of dtilt range. Fsmash is also one of Marth's only moves that forces a knockdown on spacies at low %, leading to good tech chase opportunities. DD fsmash keeps the integrity of your DD game by making opponents respect your space. When used intelligently, fsmash is a good tool in neutral.
You don't need to actually F-Smash to make opponents respect your DD. Generally, players know to respect Marth's DD, so, you won't be F-smashing in neutral very often against them, or never...

I love Roy lol. Just an FYI, rising sh fair isn't as great for stopping grounded attacks bc his far spaced Aerials don't have much hitstun. If you autocancel them you can make them useful though, ie rising fair/nair to stop first approach, autocancel land into dash dance grab to stop their immediate second approach
+BlindingBlackout A really good marth strategy that i learned from SephirothKen is to approach them and do a close rising fair, quickly fastfall L cancel and dash through them and grab from behind. Done properly you will be behind them once their shield lag ends and wont be able to shield grab you. This is something every marth player should be using.
+Sullyzorz2 Rising fair is NOT safe on shield, Ken says to do it as late as possible to be able to dash through during the shield stun. SH double fair should work I guess.
how about dash attacks as an approach? im pretty sure it can be used but how often should i used it compared to the options listed here? is it bad like nair approach?
YMSmash only really useful in the ditto to punish dash back if you read it its very laggy but it has good range and speed its not that useful in other matchups because dashback is not as common/ can be punished with better options
EcHo_aWAITs If you're having a hard time up-tilting, I suggest performing a move before it, holding your control stick up while Marth is still in the lag of that move, then pressing A. An easy way to learn it is forward smash->up tilt, while a more applicable one is shield->wavedash->up-tilt.
I REALLY struggle when chain grabbing and getting chain grabbed, first of all Im bad at starting a chain grab because when ever i try, the opponent either jumps away and punishes me or rolls and punishes me, and Im PRETTY sure i cant stop them from punishing me, second of all when i start the chain grab and throw them up, they start to di in this REALLY inpradictable way so i instantly end the chain, third of all when i get chain grabbed i try to di every way i can, yet i still get chained until i get to a percentage that i can get knocked out of the stage, if anyone can help me with this i would REALLY appreciate it. thank you
The reason you can't get the grab in is probably because it's too obvious that you'rw going for the grab. Try approaching with other options instead untill a grab becomes unpredictable again. Otherwise, practice your movement. Marth movement's amazing so you can easily bait out attacks and then grab punish them (always jump cancel your grabs btw). As far as escaping chain grabs go there's not much more you can do. Look at a lot of M2K's matches, once he gets a grab there's just no escaping no matter how good you DI. If anything, you must try to keep your DI super unpredictable. So avoid any and all patterns or habits. And lastly, chain grabbing at a high level is based on reaction time and muscle memory so my tip is to just keep practicing and it will come eventually. Practicing on 20XX cpu's with random DI helps a lot with this. Hope I helped a bit
+Culton Ruey I'm sure he said it was good, but not in neutral obviously. You can only use forward smash when in combos, or edgeguarding really, otherwise you'll get punished hard (if you're play good people of course) as seen in the video.
The real secret hidden Marth approach is short hop counter

not enough info we needed stuff on overshooting and understooting

It's a small error, but Marth actually can't shield during his IASA frames, so the information given at 1:05 is off.

dtilt that combos, somewhat better neutral b, counter kills. not much else tbh

I tend to approach with fairs too much and get shieldgrabbed a lot as a result, any good tips to break this habit?
BlindingBlackout every time you want to approach with fair, run up and grab instead
+BlindingBlackout Yeah, just mix it up. That simple. Don't be predictable.
+Sullyzorz2 Thanks for sharing this. It's helped me out a lot.

sorry for da capital really
+Victor Tan thanks for the advice
How do u do fair, nair
what does rising in the rising forward air mean?
do the forward air as soon as possible. aka while you are still moving upwards from your jump
What if I do good forward smashing in my neutral game?
Play better people.
VaLoR TryHard Yeah what Plernatious said. If you Fsmash well then good for you, but most likely you are just playing bad people.
Forward smash isn't a bad move. Ask PewPewU
Having said that.
Marth has way better ways of approaching than just f-smashing
+Culton Ruey I'm sure he said it was good, but not in neutral obviously. You can only use forward smash when in combos, or edgeguarding really, otherwise you'll get punished hard (if you're play good people of course) as seen in the video.
