Birthplace of a California Icon - Visiting the Site of the First In-N-Out Burger

- In-N-Out Burger was founded by Harry and Esther Snyder and their first restaurant opened a on October 22, 1948 at 4:15 pm on Francisquito Ave. in Baldwin Park, CA. The location of the very first restaurant is located where Interstate 10 now stands, but right next to the freeway is a replica of that first shop, allowing you to step back in time to 1948.
In-N-Out was the first drive through hamburger stand in California and the first drive through to use the two way speaker system that is used by almost all fast food drive throughs today. The replica is made to look like In-N-Out would have looked when it first opened, complete with a few items you would never find at a fast food restaurant today.
Across the freeway from the replica of the first In-N-Out is the chai's company store, where you can find In-N-Out merchandise you never would have known existed. And of course, an In-N-Out is there too, to grab a bite to eat.

I wanted to add in case anyone from the company sees this, that the In-N-Out employee that was working at the replica on Saturday when we visited was fantastic. She was really knowledgeable and extremely helpful.
You talking about Suzy double double?
Was she smoking a Chesterfield? 🚬😂
There is just something different about In-N-Out that no other place has: the cool and refreshing Southern California vibe.
Ah! I didn’t know the Mad Mad World connection! Love that movie!! 😃
Yes that movie is truly a classic
all those stars on all those locations. The W they called it ha 🌴🌴🌴🌴
My all time favorite comedy. I now have the Blu-Ray. Great picture and sound.
That was the In-N-Out of my high school years, middle 70s. There were picnic tables with a metal awning that backed up to the freeway. A few years later I worked in Baldwin Park as a fireman so it was back to store #1 for a snack after a fire.
Whenever I go out west, got to have some In-N-Out
I know someone from Japan who heads straight to In-N-Out when they get to the area.
@@SidetrackAdventures First thing we did last time in Las Vegas.
Thanks for researching something we take for granted in SoCal. Very interesting 😊
Our pleasure!
When I was a teenager it was cool to get an In-N- Out Burger bumper sticker and cutout the B and the r ( in Burger) so it says " in-n--out urge"
I remember people doing that!
I grew up right up the street from this In-N-Out. That was the '80s, so before the replica was built. Gotta get the burger "Animal Style"!
That company store was amazing! Some of those items they sell are pretty creative. I’m surprised you didn’t mention anything about the Bible verses on the cups and place mats. Or is it Chick-Fil-A that does that? The crossed palm trees fact was interesting. I didn’t know that was from a movie. Another great video!
Thank you. In-N-Out does the bible verses. I didn't even think about it when we got the food we were so hungry. That didn't start until the late 70s/early 80s when one of the sons took over.
@@SidetrackAdventures Good to know! Keep up the good work on your videos!
I grew up in Pasadena going to In-N-OUT. Went to college in San Diego when the nearest In-N-Out was an hour away in Laguna Niguel. Still had to make the drive once a month!
Growing up there wasn't an In-N-Out in San Diego until I was in Jr. High School so we'd only get it if we went up to the LA area for some reason.
Now, that’s what a hamburger is all about! Some years ago watched an episode of Huell Howser’s California ‘s Gold where he visited the replica In n Out and the University, gift store, and restaurant. After watching, my husband and I had to go. It was great fun. Thanks for highlighting this California treasure.
Huell Howser visited the replica? I think he died before it was built, unless there was a previous replica. I wish there was an easy way to watch his old episodes.
@@SidetrackAdventures You can find the Ca Gold episode on Chapman college’s web site. CA Gold episode #146. Originally broadcast May 31, 2010. After he died his video archive was donated to Chapman College in Orange. Ca Gold is archived on their web site and available to watch. The college has a Huell Howser museum on Campus, too. California’s Gold continues to be shown on KCET in LA. i’m starting to think that I saw that episode after he died. After rewatching that episode on Chapman’s web site, company reps were discussing with Huell wanting to create a replica of the original, I consulted my husband after bringing this up if he remembered seeing the replica on the north side of the freeway, and he distinctly remembers seeing it. So, to sum it up, The original 2010 episode discussed the idea of creating a replica of the original In N Out and eventually they did because I did see. When exactly, I don’t know,
I think he visited the original
At the location you were at
Fun info. I wasn't aware of the crossed palm tree. I'm floored at how long people are willing to wait for drive thru, frequently extending out of parking lot, down and around and keeps going. I no longer eat there, but when I did, I LOVED the price and the simplicity of the menu.
Yeah, even with more and more stores opening the lines never seem to get any smaller.
Double Double with Grilled Onions and Fries to go. Every time. :-) Loved this video. Thank you for going there and sharing it.
Hi Steve and family ,, there's another older in an out burgers in Azusa Calif ,, my friends and I would cruise over there from Glendora California in our old classic car,s in 1968 there the best burgers in the world ,, thanks for the video ,,have a great day
Back in the 80's, someone gave me about 25 In-N-Out bumper stickers and I took them home. My oldest son had seen people modiy them to say "In-N-Out urge. He modified several to sat "In-N-_Out Burrito" and put one on the bumper of my work truck. I drove around with it and one day a guy approached me and said, " Oh! They sell burritos too?" I laughed and told him it was created by my son. He had done such a good job, you couldn't see the mods unless you got really close and looked carefully. I miss my son. He died at Lake Havasu in June 2009.
I'm sorry about your son. I lost my soon too.
I remember seeing an episode of “California Gold” where Huell Howser (RIP) did a very similar story. Thanks for the more recent tour!
Someone else mentioned Huell Howser did an episode on In-N-Out so I had to search for it. Looks like he went to the same spot when the 1954 store was still up. That was really cool to see.
Yet another great FUN post! I got a real kick out of the sign saying "No Delay"! Hahahaha! Try that at the Mira Mesa location! :-o The place is so popular that the drive-thru by itself jambs up a big mall parking lot. Sure tastes great. Learning about the reference to Mad Mad World is a big bonus for me. "It's a big W I tell ya!" I know what I am eating later today. Thanks for your unique spin Mr. Adventures!
Yeah, I noticed they got rid of the "no delay" on their sign pretty quick.
Another great video filled with fun facts! Sometimes, when you see the crazy long wait lines, it is like being in a mad, mad, mad, world and it's better because you do get the treasure of great burgers and fries at the end.
Amazing a YT with the correct facts! Many videos say this replica is the original location! Which is false. As you mentioned the original location was demolished for the 10 freeway to be built!
I grew up in Montrose, Ca (North of Glendale...L.A. County) and our High School hang out (1983-1987) was the In-N-Out on Foothill Blvd in La Crescenta. It's still my favorite place for a cheese burger. Great video, I'm not to far from the location in the video so I'll go there
Inn n out shakes are masterpieces
The famous Baldwin Park store ! In-n-Out is on the move, I drove through Arizona last week and saw a few on the freeway out there
They have some in Texas now, but I think they've said they wont go any further east.
"Double double , animal style" is on the next level.
When I was a kid I grew up near the Diamond Bar In-n-Out and I think it was #15 one of the originals before they built dine-in ones. It is far better then other fast food restaurants.
I grew up in walnut at windwood townhouses, other side of 60fwy from in n out at Colima and Brea canyon
I remember seeing 1990's In-N-Out modified bumper stickers that removed the b and r changing In-N-Out Burger to In-N-Out urge. Immature yes but kind of funny. I love your informative and entertaining videos.
People still do it!
Catching a smoke while getting a Cheeseburger with grilled onions sounds like a vibe
This video inspired us to go there today. Thanks for the awesome content! Keep up the great work and go Padres!
They opened up one in Roseburg Oregon not too long ago but I’ve never been to it yet. Now that I’ve watched your video I might try it 👌
I remember when I was a kid in Escondido the closest In-n-Out was in Laguna Niguel. I thought I was devoted, but to go all the way to Baldwin Park? You, sir, have my respect.
Escondido now has an In-N-Out Burger. I live in Ramona and would sure enjoy one here, but Escondido is a quick drive .
@@groverearp2600 right, at 15 and Valley Pkwy. I'm talking about the seventies and eighties.

If I ever get back to CA, this is my first stop. Miss the burgers.
Thank you for the video.
In Kingman Arizona now
I met the owner at a bar a long time ago, she was very nice, she looked so young I didnt believe her at 1st.
Yeah, she is only around 40 years old now.
@@SidetrackAdventures The story of her brother, Ritchie was his name I believe, who died in the plane that crashed approaching John Wayne Airport is a twist to the history of this company.
If I’m not mistaken, I believe the owner is the granddaughter of the founders and is a billionaire.
Lived about a quarter mile from this original site from 1955 to 1961. Ate there often. The original site was on the other side of the street from the old style site now where the offices are today. Brings back many fond memories!
.
Pretty cool. Thanks for the fun info.
Camel, Lucky Strike, and James Dean favorite Chesterfield! 💨🚬 Amazing that Apple has a lit cigarette emoji too lol 😷🤣
Love your videos!
Steve: your videos are super great!!
Fine tour, thanks.
When I was a child my grandpa and I used to go to In n Out all the time. I’d order a protein style burger with grilled onions, a cardboard box of fries, a pink lemonade and for dessert a vanilla milkshake. If only I could have bacon and blue cheese to go with the burger. That’d be awesome.
Great stuff! Now you can do a video on how Baldwin Park got its name. It will bring you to Tahoe, and that’s reason enough to do one.
2:53 omg that was my parents' original washer! It probably came with the house when they bought it. I think it lasted until the late 1960s.
We've been to the replica but they weren't open at the time. Will have to plan better our next SoCal trip. We did visit the store and working INO...and we were just at our local one last night. I could customize like crazy, depends on my assessment of the cashier's experience. Basic is hamb w/lettuce, grilled onion and mustard. Going further would be double-meat, mustard-fried. Fries, absolutely well done, without question.
A fun retro tour. The tidbit about the crossed palm trees is interesting! Good management makes or breaks a restaurant. The Mission Valley (San Diego) location is hoppin' at midnight on the weekends, with kids after dances or clubbing. I love me a strawberry shake!
Thank you for your videos! I really enjoy them.
Thank you, we appreciate it.
I wait for them every week and get annoyed when I can't find the most recent on RUclips. Show up a week or more later. Drat!
And they make good money ! I met one of the managers and he was making 80.000 bucks with all the perks, is pretty decent money.
Cool back story on the crossed palm trees, never knew that fact toid.
I love you work ❤
Cool. Thanks !
Grew up not too far from the one on Gale (by Hacienda BLVD) right off the 60 in hacienda heights. Double double with grilled onions. My brother would get animal style. Been to the one between Hesperia and Barstow a number of times as well as Kingman Arizona. Keep hearing one is coming here in New Mexico real soon for 10 years now...
Just one comment About the MAD MAD MAd Wolrd movie. It was a Big W made of palm trees.
Great Episode.
In & out hamburgers 🍔 is famous for their classic 🚗 car's 😊❤
I didn't know all that background about them. I remember please would drive to PHX from Tucson to get a burger. Then they finally opened here. I like the Double Double and a shake. I didn't like the fries , but now I sometimes order them. The employees are nice, and like that they support/ collect donations for some worthy causes. Didn't know there was a store. I like the shoes.
Great video!
Thanks!
Yummy!!! I couldn't wait until In N Out finally moved into Arizona!!! SD was the closest, then it got to Yuma, then Casa Grande, and finally, Queen Creek!! Yippee!!! Thanks for snother great video!!
Oh! I didn’t know you can order fries “well done”! Gonna try that! 😃
Love In n Out. I like double-double, fries and a root beer.
Oh the irony of the “No Delay” part of their sign.
It’s been 40 years since I’ve had an In n Out burger! I’m from South Carolina, but lived in Cerritos, Ca in the mid 80’s for a year and a half. There was one across the street from us that we ate at occasionally. The was also a doughnut shop that was very good nearby too that was a California chain but I can’t remember the name of it.
Thanks for sharing and making me hungry!😎
just guessing on the donuts, maybe Foster's?
There's an In-N-Out two three blocks away from me here in Orem, Utah. I don't eat there very often but when I do I get the double double animal.
I guess I should mention that there's no w palm trees here but I guess that's because palm trees don't do too well in this area.
Thanks!
Thank you. I really appreciate it.
see the size of that store? the real genius behind IN/N/OUT was leasing the pie shaped land that was right off a freeway onramp, and you could see the signage from miles up the freeway. No one else had a use for that land. you swung off the freeway , then turned immediately into the driveway and drove between two bldgs. no bigger than an outhouse! one for prep, one for orders, preparing and cooking.
Fries "light well" is the best! Always animal style for a burger or cheeseburger.
What a cool video thank you nice👍👍👍✌️
Glad you enjoyed it.
Double-Double and fries. Every time-all the time.
I remember a 70s LA thing everybody modified there in n out burger bumper sticker by removing the B in burger. Yes that was a thing.
Didn't realize In and Out got started in Baldwin Park.
I’m not that big on In-N-Out but I really enjoyed your video 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed!
Walter loves In N Out
great, now I'm hungry. #1 Double Double, no spread, no onions fries, coke. (every other Friday for lunch 😻)
In n out the true definition of the american dream
I hope you do an episode on Carls Jr. Another So Cal fast food icon.
Double-Meat (Dbl-Dbl with no cheese), Animal, and Animal Fries for me. 🍔🍟
It’s interesting to note that, in addition to having so many employees at work, In-n-Out employees have always been paid better than almost any other fast-food chain, plus benefits that most don’t offer. They’re paid better, they’re treated better, and encountering a rude- or grumpy In n Out employee is unheard of. Likewise, complaints by employees are very rare, and are usually revealed to be fraudulent.
Cool
Fries well done...I knew there was some hidden reason I found this channel legit. For the record, trip-dub with everything, onion(fresh or grilled depending on mood) pickle, but sometimes no lettuce to make room for the third patty. Best fast food in California, especially if you look at cost/benefit, what you get for your money. Where else can you get a REAL fresh burger, that tastes heavenly, for $5, or an all-day meal for $10? Also, one of the best-run restaurant companies: good to employees, high employment per store, decent wages, clean stores, etc etc. I have heard rumors that as time goes on, management is letting some things slip in favor of higher profits, which I hope is not true....they already have a winning recipe... one of, if not the highest, store success rates in the business, and no shady BS that I've ever seen anyway. The local store here in Arroyo Grande is, literally, the busiest restaurant of any kind I have ever seen in my life, it routinely has 30+ cars in line for hours, and a full lobby as well. I've seen other popular major chain restaurants placed in prime locations and busy international airports that look like they've fallen on hard times in comparison.
Depending how hungry I am, either 2 double-doubles or a 4x4.
Double Double with everything and a Flying Dutchman for my dog 🐕
Interesting! I've seen this location in another video somewhere but didn't know much about the company's history. I could definitely use a potato washing machine. Much more fun and probably quicker. 😂 I'll still take my mid-west burger places though. While I do enjoy them now and again, try and I might I just couldn't get as into In-N-Out as some around here. 😅
Speaking of mid-west burgers, we recently tried Culvers for the first time and thought it was pretty good.
@@SidetrackAdventures I can't remember if I actually ever had Culver's until I moved to Arizona. 😅 Growing up it was always Steak n' Shake. Something about the crispy edges and skinny fries. Are they the best? Nah, not really. I've had better but still reminds me of my childhood so y'know... That was always a plain cheeseburger, fries and lime freeze.
Double Double animal style
I have to admit, I haven't tried animal style because I'm not big on mustard. Going to try it next time we go though.
This made me hungry
Hamburger, double single well done with pickles. If you don’t ask for pickles, you don’t get them. And fries lightwell.
That was really great. What a kewl example of California Americana. I was in California twice in the 60s but I don’t remember seeing any In & Out stores or other chains except Howard Johnson’s. I have heard Jack In The Box mentioned in movies. Did Jack In The Box come before In & Out? Just curious. You always have great descriptive information on your video subjects. 👍☮️🌞🍔🍟🥤
Jack in the Box started a few years later. The first Jack in the Box was in San Diego but the site has a dentist office or something now.
Never knew I could request well done fries! 👍🏽
If you like your fries crispy, I highly recommend it.
Double double animal style w grilled onions and peppers, fries well-done and a pink lemonade Arnold Palmer!!
Animal style fries! Pretty much everything at in-n-out is delicious but the fries are my guilty pleasure.
4 x 4 with grilled onion no tomato, Animal style fries and a rootbeer
Double double of course onions and cheese fries hits 😋
Double-double animal style, well done fries and chocolate shake.
I used to go to that first in n out when I was in highschool back in the early 70s. The " no delay" sign should be removed. I skip going for lunch because it takes too long
waouh, super intéressant sur un mythe de la culture américaine. A faire si je passe dans le coin.
A double with all the fixings with fries and rootbeer or strawberry shake and fries
LIGHT FRIES
Wait... they're the ones who started the drive thru 2way speaker system? 🤯
The Big W
Remember Huell Howser? This is the new version...
Number 1. Double double, fries and ice tea or chocolate shake.
They didn’t mention that you can order the 4x4, 4 meat and 4 buns.
My parents used to go here when they were dating in the 1950s.
Steve you make laugh . McDonalds began in San Diego
Actually it was in Downey. LA County. barf

You said that the replica is open during certain hours. What is it open for? To sell food? Or just to walk around it?
Flying Dutchmen grilled Onions for me
3x3 animal style, protein style, chopped chilis and fry lite!!!
Cheeseburger animal style, add raw onion and extra chilies, extra mustard instead of spread... And you're right, fries well done!
