- Quick and easy how to video on how to Change Headlight Bulbs on 2011-2013 Kia Optima. The video and this method can be used on other KIA’s as well as be applied to later models that range from the 2011 - 2013. I am using the H11B low bean head light bulb to replace the headlight bulb on this 2013 kia optima.
A friend of mine did not want to goto the dealer and she knows I am very handy so I helped her out. Allot of friends with many different types of cars comes to me for help so I decided to record the experiences and post them here on youtube for you guys so you don't have to spend big bucks at the dealer just to change a headlight.

Just wanted to drop this comment just in case it can help someone else out. I have a 2013 Kia Optima SXL turbo & there's two big differences in this video than the experience I had. First, the bulbs that were replaced previously in my vehicle, had to have likely been done by a dealership. I say this because there's a small Philips screw underneath the low beam headlight housing, that screws into the twist off cover. If you don't not take this out, the cover WILL NOT twist off. I found this out after doing some research on why the cover wasn't coming off. I'm sure no one who does work on their own car, would put this back on. It's way too much of a hassle and not needed.
Secondly, the SXL Turbo model doesn't use H11b bulbs for the low beam lights. It uses a more expensive D1S HID bulb. The installation of that bulb is way trickier than this type bulb.
Just a heads up for SXL Turbo model owners.

This video is accurate and in most circumstances the bulb change should be as easy as he showed it to be... however, if you had the same luck I had--and from some of these comments I can see I certainly wasn't the only one who could NOT seem to get the bulb to unscrew no matter what I did. I was changing out the driver side low beam. I got the access cylinder lid off no problem in my case, but try as I might I could not get the bulb to turn to the left and come out--or budge at all for that matter. I tried leather gloves, heavy work gloves, and even steel mesh gloves, but despite giving it all my might, it would not give. I went through this for 2 evenings to no avail, only to end up with sore fingers. I tried using a pair of pliers but of course you're very limited as to what you can stick in there because of the angle it is, and the fact the that fuse box is in the way. All the pliers did though at first was break off the middle part of the plastic handle from the bulb so I knew I needed to not try that anymore or there wouldn't be anything left to grab a hold of. Finally I decided to fashion a crude homemade contraption of a tool by taping (one-time use) horizontally to my plier blades, 2 one inch pieces of steel from a cut carpentry nail. I taped both pieces of nail to my straight plier blades (t-shaped nail on plier blade) to where when I inserted the pliers and grabbed onto the plastic light bulb end, the force would be distributed equally by the steel pieces when trying to turn the bulb to the left with the pliers. Hard to explain, really, but with some effort the darn thing FINALLY gave and came right out. There were no screws holding it in which I was growing suspicious of, it was just tight! The new bulb went right in with no problem and I jumped for joy in the driveway for 10 mins afterwards celebrating lol. Well maybe not 10 minutes but I was elated as I was about the the point of figuring the only alternative was taking the whole light assembly out from the front which I was sure dreading. So just wanted to pass this along in case it might help someone else in the future. This was for my daughters car and you know as a dad I HAD to figure out a way!!
Had the same issue, got a flathead and lightly tapped it with a hammer, popped right out.
The damn plastic part broke before I could get it to come out… I guess I gotta take it to the dealership

I told my boyfriend he didn’t need to take his car to a dealership to get a headlight fixed and that I could do it and, of course, it’s not as easy as I hoped, lol. My bulb is very stuck but I’m gonna try using a flathead and hammer later 🙏🏼

I just want to point out that there are three little indentions on the base of the bulb (1 is larger than the other 2), make sure they are lined up when you insert the new bulb, then when you twist it to the right those prongs on side of the bulb automatically slip into the rubber plug mechanism. It can only go in one way. Thank you for the awesome video!
Your video was useful after someone helped me, and showed me there are two entry points for the healdlights. The main bulb replacement is farther back .
The front is for highbeams. You may want to mention that.
This is my experience as of today, February 26, 2024. I have a 2012 Optima SX-Turbo.
It is NOT a piece of cake, as described here. It requires a Sylvania D1S, same as in most BMW's. It's $220/pr. The cover that seals the bulb in, is not just a screw in or ¼ turn. It is held in by a very small Phillips screw at the bottom. PITA just to rotate this screw. In addition, you MUST remove the coolant reservoir just to manipulate said screw on the passenger side. Same on the driver's side, EXCEPT that you must remove the battery to get the previously described.

It was so easy for you to do, I'm gonna give it a try tomorrow morning, I bought the bulbs but two separate guys at two different Autozone's couldn't get it in there 🤷🏻♀️.

5 years ago i didn’t have a car. Got my first car a 2012 kia Optima in 2021. Was always waiting for the day I will have to change a light bulb.
Well today is that day.
Although I think I messed up a bit here.
I was quick on buying the bulbs but turns out I got the Halogen H11s, watched the video then, I got out the bulbs.😅. Turns out they are H11B.
I’m trying to figure out if the H11s go in. Or if I have to go get the H11B.

Very good straight forward video. The only thing I will say is certain models like mine (2013 SX Turbo), has factory installed D1S HID bulbs not H11B for low beam.

Even after removing the coolant tank, I couldn't get my passenger side bulb out either. It didn't want to move in either direction even with a wrench.

One side was easy, other side, very tight. First, I used a needle nose plier... bad choice. Broke off a piece of plastic. Then I used a small adjustable wrench... Bingo!

In the SX, there is a small Philips screw at the bottom of the dust cover that is a pain to remove, and the bulb is a D1S.

Simple process thats simply done simply.
noting even close to mine.. mine on my 2013 Kia Optima is a box I have to remove. The light buld does not look like a H1 or an H11. Wish it did.

I always have trouble changing that bulb due to it being so close to the coolant. I unscrewed some of the attachments for the coolant to move it that way I could access the bulb area better. Hope you figured it out, if not maybe give that a try!

Some models have a screw at the 6 o'clock position. This is what I came upon when I tried to change my friends for her. What a pain in the ass cause you can't see it without researching dust covers.

Do you have any experience with the H11B LED bulbs? I have an '11 Kia Optima and am TRYING to overcome the stupid (defective) projector lights in a friend's car. She does not have the $$ to replace the headlight housings. I have ordered 3 different sets OF LED H11Bs and while they look right the LEDs are larger in diameter at the base where they go into the housings. The LEDs will NOT go in. Any thoughts?

Thank you. Very helpful. It was very hard to twist but I managed. I would recommend that if it's very tough to apply some WD40. Take out the battery for extra room. Use a small flathead and hammer and hitting the small ridged counter clockwise to loosen.
Thanks for this comment. I had thought of this but was hesitant due to potentially breaking the bulb, but it worked like a charm. After putting on the WD40, put a flat head screwdriver at close to horizontal as could get it, and did a few quick taps with hammer so as to not break the bulb, and it moved. Then came out super easy like the video. New one went in just as easy with no damage caused from the weird removal.
Thank you for the tip about WD-40. After trying by hand for an hour, gave up and tried again with a bunch of tools that couldn't fit in the tiny space, finally tried with WD-40 and it turned so easily. THANK YOU!

Hi Jennifer, yes I believe you just need to remove the one screw on the side of the coolant reservoir and move it to the side! Hope it helps let me know!

Mine was far from routine or anything like I've changed before and the bulb was over 100$ for 1 bulb.mine had a screw before u can unscrew cap and a clip over top the bulb itself that I can't figure out how to remove. Rediciculous
Theres 2 screws at the top of headlight assembly that lets you just remove the entire light 99× easier

You should be able to twist it off with a little force. Depending on the condition of your vehicle it might be harder to take off.

I hope you added LED white bulbs after 2 yrs you did this video, those yellow light are horrible looking and dangerous to drive at night. I got a 2013 Kia Optima that I bought brand new and I have LED’S super nice and bright white color.
Those are crazy expensive. Had to replace two in one year. I havr to use the HID special for my Kia Optima SX .. they are $100

The weather cap is seized in place and the finger grip tabs broke off. I have tiny girly hands and I still can’t get my hand around it in there. I bet the engineer that designed this headlight assembly rides a bike to work.

Because the space is so small in there. I notice this video doesn’t show him replacing the bulb. It is not simple, easy or quick. The connector for the bulb is fixed. You need really small hands to replace without breaking the bulb. I will try again tomorrow. Smh
I just paid almost $160 for a bulb and had to take it to a shop to put it in. They ordered a different color Than the bulb it was🤦♀️ I had the bright LED bulbs & this one is a lot dimmer & more yellow. Ugh
May have forgot to mention - DO NOT TOUCH BULB GLASS - else hand oils it might burn bulb out sooner.

@@ryan9701 its legit impossible to reach the back part of the light . The car has that bar in place that makes it difficult. I'm a savvy female but this is tricky.. and it doesn't turn as easily. I don't wanna spend $205 lol.
It will turn just use some force. You have to use your fingers or you can even use a bar or flat head screw driver and put it in one of the grooves in the cover and knock it loose
@@ryan9701 my car doesn't even have all that space you have in your hood and my hands are much smaller than a man's. Mines has a electric and gas engine, it's a very tight reach on the driver side, which is the light thats out on mines. But I'll try with a tool and see if that works for me. Thanks guys.

today i went to kia my low beam bulb went out i look online i will i have learn my lesson into buying anything from the dealer since i cant return in back . Anyways here you go low beam bulb 277.00 plus tax 302.05 online amazon less then $50 bucks . i will add something more radiator dodge charger 1000 at the dear 500 eles where . the dealer ships just as 1 movie i saw they just f@#$ you in the drive thru . i will add 2015 replace the light is tuff to get off lucky i have good friend do all the work witch took hr ...... Im JUST SO PISS iVE GOT JACK ASS PRINT ON ME.
