Mate, never apologise for you who are. I’m an Aussie and every second word is a ‘profanity’😁 Your last vid just come up on my feed and was curious as I also live in Rizal (Antipolo). Been here last 10 years and while I’ve adapted to living here, I can relate with everything you said . Also a vet,so if you ever want / need to have a chat with another ‘like minded’ expat , let me know and we could meet up for a coffee 👍
We're in Binangonan, which is an hour or two drive south. We almost moved to Antipolo a couple years ago, but that fell through (we almost got scammed). I was surprised to see so many westerners living there, as it seems there are a few subdivisions that cater mostly to them. It's not a bad place, bigger city but still not too close to NCR to be mega crowded. Unfortunately, the closest S&R is still quite a ways out, with Marikina being the best option from here. Still a lot cheaper than Subic or AC I think.
Been here 5 years. Married to a Filipina. Built a house with an ocean view. (Hers actually) Cheaper here. Weather mostly good. Everything else sucks big time ! If you have low standards , you might be ok with it.
Living by the ocean has pros and cons. Before I met my wife, I was planning to move to the San Fernando, La Union area. Great beaches, but it can get pretty busy during surf season because of San Juan being nearby. So far that area hasn't been hit too bad during typhoons, but it's still a coastal area so you have to deal with what comes with that.
Don't apologize for being your authentic self. Let those who troll or criticize go kick rocks. Your years of experience has more value than the tourist's perspective. I've been to the PI 4 times, your experience with housing and infrastructure is spot on. I've seen the "living like a local" perspective and I've stayed at high end condos in Cebu and Manila. The "affordable" living in the Philippines definitely requires adjustment. If you want to replicate your US living standards, be ready to spend more.
Very important valuable information you delivered that I and a lot of others appreciate also a person has to add up the cost of visas and renewal as well as the airfare etc put it all into one math problem and see what the total cost was per month per day etc
If you want to live at the grand hyatt residences in manila, eat organic food and maintain the same lifestyle i would argue your life will be at least 50% more expensive than the same lifestyle in the US.
Even living in a decent subdivision and eating "nice food" can easily cost more than living in better conditions back in US or UK etc. We bought what we could at S&R and Landers but still used to arrange for friends back home to send over a couple of Balikbayan boxes of food every 6 months. I would rather do that then pay the vastly inflated online prices for imported foods and drinks.
I like you. The way you are now. And before your 10k video. Just be you, even if you get 50k subs. Expats in the Philippines are a dime a dozen brother. Don’t change yourself for anyone because you’re not gonna make everyone happy. You second guessing yourself is why me and my wife haven’t started our channel.
I feel like it's more a matter of showing more "respect" to the general audience. I don't talk like that in public (usually), it's just not the way I was taught to interact with people. I sometimes catch myself using language like that around my wife's mom (who's in her 70's), which is not good. But I understand where you guys are coming from. I think I'll keep that style of conversation for the topics that call for it, but it's not something I'd prefer if I'm talking about simpler topics like budgets or shopping.
I think you're missing an important point. The reason that video was picked up by "Legion Of Men" and people watched it, is because it was GOOD. All you should be taking away from that is you made a good video and should do more like that. Those people complaining about language will have many more things to complain about so you might as well ignore them.
I plan on retiring in the Philippians in 2025 on fixed income plus savings. I was there in the Philippians in April 2023 . I would like to talk with you about affordable housing there. Thanks.
Sure, feel free to email with your questions. Just keep in mind that I do have limited experience, so I'm definitely not to be considered an expert source of info. But I can try answering questions best I can.
Scew them your old video was 100% spot on. Most people come here on vacations Live like kings for 2 weeks spoiling there gf then go home and defend how great it is in Philippines. Visiting and living here two different things. I mean my first 6 months here i had those rose color glasses on year 2 once all the newness wears off you see all those crazy things that make you go “wtf”. Bummer you’re not in cebu city. You sound like a cool guy to talk to.
When I was here as a tourist back in '03/04, I spent about a week in Manila/Makati at hotels, then 3 weeks in the province at my (former) gf's house with her family. Even in Manila I wasn't staying in one of the fancier hotels, it was a cheaper place. Staying at their provincial house was obviously nothing close to the luxuries of a hotel, and was nothing close to the housing I've had or seen in the US. But it was comfortable, at least during my 3-week stay. Problem is, I still knew I was just a tourist, and there's a lot of details that I didn't notice at the time. Once you've lived here a while, you notice more details, good and bad. Not to mention, locals will often treat you differently if you're a tourist or if you actually live here.
It was the exact same thing for me. All the female attention i got in the first 8-9 months, enjoying how "cheap" it was etc. After a year in Cebu i realized how filthy the streets are where if i go outside for a walk after a rain all of my clothes are being splashed with mud. I have allergic conjunctivitis resulting in dry eye disease from living in cebu for a year 😂 Likely moving to Bohol in a week and probably to Malaysia or the south of France in 4 months, but i'm happy to go for a coffee if you want to talk shop.
It's your channel Jason. You should "keep it real" about any topic. The only thing I have had issues with is those dreaded YT Gremlin algorithms 🤣 during my time on this platform. I think that Legion of Men channel accounted for that last video view spike. It does make one wonder though how so many channels gloss over or completely ignore the realities. That's just as important to know as it is to check the State Department website before visiting any place in the world these days. Good luck with future videos and life there. I am waiting till retirement and considering Thailand as my potential Shangri-La.
I think the video title is what started getting so many views. Before LOM did their review, the video was still getting a ton of views and comments. I think that's what pushed the analytics up and LOM saw it, reviewed it, and that in turn pushed up views even more. I'm not a big channel, I don't have a ton of content posted (especially not recently), I'm recording with low-cost equipment, and I don't do all the flashy editing. So I wasn't expecting to get so many views, at least not in such a short period of time. But hopefully the information in that video has been helpful for some.
Id love it if you could talk a little more about internet access in the philipines. Is it fast enough to video call the fellas back home? or play online games like Call of duty or whatever?
I can only tell you my experiences. Most places are going to have high-speed fiber available, but quality can vary depending on provider and location. So far, Globe has been great for internet. We rarely have internet outages, although there are times when the international speed seems to dip a little. This is usually during the holidays or severe weather such as typhoons, but it's not common. Our current plan is the GFiber 2099, which is 300Mbps with unlimited data, and right now we're even on a free speed boost promo (500Mbps for 24 months). Cost after all taxes and fees is around $44 per month, and it also includes a free "land line" phone that is capable of international calls (at extra per-minute rate). I can make video calls with family and friends back on the west coast and the signal quality is the same as if I was in the same town. Online gaming does have some issues, because you're going to get worse pings to US servers. I can connect to Asian servers fine, but running Arma 3 on US servers gives me around 250 ping.
Living in urban and suburban areas where fiber is available, internet is good/fast enough. In province areas where you rely on wifi from towers that mostly are not too near, your internet fluctuates from ok to looking at a spinning circle.
My VA docs had diagnosed me with PTSD and other issues, but that claim is in appeal. I was getting "treatment" for it, aka medicated. But since I wasn't rated for it yet, I can't get treatment for it here. The challenge is trying to get assistance with VA claims while overseas, since there aren't any VSO here.
I think this video was closer to the conversation style I had in my past videos. It'll probably take me a bit longer to get used to recording again, but I'll be trying to keep the conversation style more aligned with the fact that most people watching don't know me or my background, and might not be comfortable with the language and attitude that I use when I'm around people I know. But there are going to be more videos with that other conversation style, because the topic or situation is better suited for it.
@jasoninrizal3451 we want the authentic , not this polished censored version! Legion of men watched the video because it was good. You are missing the point. I think maybe the only ones who weren't happy with it was maybe Filipinos.
Probably not the content for me. But the visuals😂. In the other videos, he is in a very awkward position or something..and he looked sloppy. No offense...because now i see he is a great guy 😂. He looks completely different. 😂
Man your video was good , you must not read comments .... be real , be blunt... don't beat around the "jungle"... just tell it like it is that what we want
That's about 2 hours drive south from here, close to Taal. I haven't been there yet myself, but I've seen several videos and heard it's a popular place. Supposed to have some nice views, and it's a similar distance from NCR.
Keep the format and conversational style of the previous video - it was authentic. And that's the path to success, be yourself!
