What they dont tell you about the road-deaths in Thailand is that they only count the death on the scene of the accident. People who die in ambulance or hospital after are not counted. So the real death rate is considerably higher. And the traffic is definitely not the same. Due to the congestion (at least on Cebu) the traffic moves relatively slow. In Thailand you¨ll have pickups going at 150 km/h all day all night no matter the weather. You dont see that speed so much in Philippines. I also experienced a lot of drunk driving in Thailand. No matter the time of day, just worse in the night time. I was at a restaurant around 2 pm to eat an early dinner and had 2 thai gentlemen on the side table. They drank over 1 bottle of whiskey before getting into their pickup and drove away. Clearly drunk both of them. Crazy. And the internet in Philippines is literaly horrible no matter where you live. We had ADSL in our apartment in Cebu City (couldnt get fiber) and it was pretty bad most of the time. So for anyone gaming or doing online activity, internet will be quite an obstacle in Philippines. In the provice you can pretty much forget about reliable internet. Thailand was really good that way. Even internet through phone almost everywhere was great when i went on motorbike trips.

The traffic is rough in Pattaya & other parts of Thailand. But if you're in a car and not on a bike, you're likely to have no issues. And with the super low cost of Uber type ride services (Bolt, Grab), you can take cars all day and night for darned near free imho. The guys on bikes who ride w/o helmets are the bulk of the road deaths here. Having said that, when WALKING across the street, have your head on a swivel.

Checkout Jomtien, Thailand for enjoyable living. I was at View Talay for 8 years in a studio unit.
Philippines I feel is more friendly. The English language isn't really an issue. The biggest negativity is poor internet and food choices, followed by very tiny apartments. If your moving into a house, expect less than modern features.

It's best to rent a place for a while, say a month. If you like it then rent for a year. Even different cities within these countries have a completely different vibe to them. To me that is killing time, not filling it in time with something better. I enjoy my alone time. It really depends on personal preference. Thailand is often seen as more developed for tourists, offering a more organized and structured experience, while the Philippines has a more laid-back, community-oriented atmosphere. However, both countries share these traits to some extent-the difference is just where they lean more. If you prefer a more polished, tourist-friendly environment, Thailand might be a good choice. But if you're looking for a simpler, family-oriented experience with a more authentic local vibe and pure unfiltered adventure, the Philippines could be a great place to stay.

If you're looking for a comfortable lifestyle similar to the US in terms of infrastructure, Thailand is a great option. It also has a rich, distinct culture. On the other hand, the Philippines offers a mix of Filipino, Western, and other Asian influences, so you get a blend of cultures, but in a less touristy way. If you're after luxury and a more established tourism scene, Thailand might suit you better. However, if you enjoy connecting with locals and immersing yourself in their culture, the Philippines is the place to be. Filipinos are incredibly welcoming, often inviting you into their homes, and sharing with you whatever they have. Each country has its unique charm, and personal preference plays a big role in how people feel about them. The comments section will often reflect this, with fans of either country sharing their love. Ultimately, it’s important not to rely solely on the experiences of others-some people have lived in both countries and may prefer one over the other, but your experience will depend on your own interests and mindset.

I suspect there are many parallels between the countries but I think Thailand is a better place to live long term. This is largely due to far better infrastructure and the fact that the country is more unified not spread out over 7,000 islands. Blackouts of electricity and internet service, which generally is far superior, almost never happen. Much better medical services. No food shortages and food prices more stable.
Negatives: Fewer people speak English. Thai language is difficult to learn for many foreigners.
There are cultural quirks that are hard to understand and / or justify by western standards. This is also true about the Philippines.
There is a big but subtle difference in the belief systems.
The Philippines has a very thin veneer of Americanism, less than 100 years, layered on top of a slightly thicker veneer of Hispanic colonialism, about 400 years worth. Both of those are on top of a basic and thickly rooted Asian history / background. And all of that has an imported and force fed religion laid on top of it.
Thailand has a much more unified cultural history and is mostly Buddhist, giving it a far different attitude to the people about life in general.
This is a big deal and not all that obvious until you spend some time in each country.

Thailand is a million times better in most ways. The only parts that are hard is the communication/language barrier as Thai are not very proficient in English. If you take some time to learn simple thai phrases you will get along fine. And always be polite and not aggressive. Their culture frown upon aggressive behaviour. If you like to drink and party, Pattaya or Bangkok is the place to be. If you like to relax, enjoy the beach life, good food and perhaps golf then Cha-Am or Hua Hin are great. I generaly dont recommend Chiang Mai or Chiang Rais the air pollution there is so bad most of the year. Phuket is also a good alternative but the traffic congestion there is pretty bad. Just for reference i lived 2,5 year in Hua Hin, Thailand, and 2 years on Cebu island in Philippines during the last 6 years.

Google Translate is your friend in Thailand because learning the language is an uphill battle. As for English proficiency, it is really different everywhere you go. Bangkok Hospital in Pattaya staff was *extremely good* with English as lots of their patients were clearly Western. In the provinces, I hear it is likely the opposite. That's where the Google Translate is helpful.

Thailand is a fantastic place to visit and perhaps suitably ideal for retirees to hang their hats in (at least your salad can be spiced up with ingredients so mellow, it will send your soul soaring). I know two people who live there. One part-time, and the other permanent. Because he became a Christian Missionary and ended up marrying a Thai national that is a little younger than him. I am also retired, and my ex-girlfriend was a real gold digger. It was difficult living with her because we have to often go on all our four in the mud and shallow streams in hidden Sierra foothills fighting with bears and unpredictable weather in order to afford to pay for provisions. Yeah, Philippines and Thailand, tantalizing propositions and disability benefits are really for the ones who justifiably deserves them. Meanwhile, I just got to figure out other ways to making doughs rise and whether Rhizomes are good alternatives during times of climate change. 😎👁👁

If you cannot find happiness in the Philippines, the more you cannot find it in Thailand or anywhere else in the world. Almost guaranteed.

@@dantheman11121 Many foreigners cannot find long-term happiness in Thailand and have moved for good to the Philippines as the people, the language, the culture made them fit in more and happy. Its becoming the trend.

@dantheman11121 People who underestimate the Philippines have never lived here. Watch many videos of foreigners living in Thailand vs Philippines, many nationalities prefer Philippines for long-term stay. With this new trend of migration, 1 million Americans anticipated to settle in the Philippines by 2030s

Mike he is definitely a cheap Charlie. Trying to live on a thousand a month and eating street food all I can say is that’s not retirement living but good luck to him. Cheers 🍻

Well, if he was still living in the US, he'd be out on the streets living on $1000 So your cheap Charlie is living well in his retirement compared to how he'd be living if he was still in the US.

Should he intentionally spend more than he needs to? Would that make his retirement better?
