Y'all, don't get me wrong i know you mean well and yeah you're right they ARE social animals. That said, this appears to be a rescue situation. When you rescue, it's not always perfect, you just keep trying to make it better for all the animals as best you can. Additionally, even if this isn't a rescue, as far as I'm aware cows can bond with non-cow animals, and there was no reason to assume he would be unable to bond with the other herd animals present. He was initially rejected, but note the age. He was still new and young, it takes time to form bonds. Potentially the ponies would've made friends with him, and he was still getting human bonding, which is still socialization, even while the animals were rejecting him. And look, sure enough, before too long (within two years at the absolute max) they DID get a friend for him. And I'm sure if the opportunity arises, they'll acquire a cow. In the mean time, he is fed and watered and housed, he receives love and affection, he has a best friend--he's living a really good life! He HAS a herd. Your herd doesn't have to be your own species. Interspecies bonding is normal actually!

Oh my I love this! Ronnie the baby cow was feeling so strange with all the small horses. She wanted to be friends but the animals all ignored her. Winston, a young beautiful horse kept looking at her trying so hard to make friends. She went over to him and kissed him and he liked that.
