    I think this song was sort of a response to the PMRC, Tipper Gore and the Washington wives who advocated putting parental warning stickers on albums they considered indecent & obscene.
    He's not being nice to the mom. He's saying you can't shelter your children from the realities of this world for long. You can't keep them in the dark.
    He's telling parents that he's out there, and their children will find their way into his world of head-banging and cheek clapping.

      It makes me think of a more modern _Mommas, don't let your children grow up to be cowboys._
      Like, we sing about and romanticize this lifestyle, but it lives up to its darker reputation.

    • @drew65sep
      @drew65sep 3 года назад +16

      Yup...younger music fans should check out just what all that PMRC crap was about, and to what lengths some in government will go to in trying to stomp all over one's First Amendement Rights. "Oh, but Metal and Gangsta Rap are responsible for corrupting the Nation's youth." It was all such bullsht. Musical writers, artists, and composers (just to name a few) having to defend themselves, their music, the fans, the kids, and the genres' by testifying in front of Senate Subcommitees, and in court...more than a few times. It was nothing short of a musical "witch hunt," and an attack upon the rights guaranteed by the US Constitution. Forget about the musical historic connotations...it IS history...PERIOD. It'd be a good "read" for young people still learning in school. And also, an excellent teaching point that won't bore them to sleep. If nothing else, it'd be relatable because it's something that their parents and grandparents had to go through, regardless of skin color, wealth, or social standing. They were trying to dry-hole everybody.

  • @xxFortunadoxx
    @xxFortunadoxx 2 года назад +30

    Morrison is a huge influence on Danzig. He's gone on record stating the Doors is one of his biggest influences. There's a reason you like his voice; because his voice sits between a baritone and a tenor, just like Elvis's voice. This specific range allows him to hit specific highs that accentuate a rocker's voice well, while also hitting the growling lows that a metal voice would need. Elvis needed the highs of '50's rockabilly, and 60's R&B and gospel, but the lows of blues rock. Different styles, but the comparison is the same. Obviously Elvis's inflections are what make his voice so legendary, but this song didn't really need much of that except for the beginning before the guitar distortion kicked in.
    This is metal, but it's more reminiscent of a '70's metal despite the song being released in 1988. That's why you probably thought it was rock, because it didn't have that '80's metal sound that you'd expect from a band like Megadeth or any of the big 4. It has more of a Black Sabbath sound overall with guitars sounding suspiciously tuned to sound like Iron Maiden.

Part of the Big 4 of Thrash Metal (which actually should have been the Big 8: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Flotsam & Jetsam, and OverKill). [Glen] Danzig came from the Punk Rock band The Misfits. So if anything his solo stuff in Danzig is a slight progression out of Punk Rock. If I recall this song came out in like 1988 or so.

    Glenn Danzig, was the once the singer for the Misfits. This is a form of heavy metal without the gravelly snarling vocals. It's what metal kinda was in the early 90s.

    It’s about the over protective father archetype, where the father is overprotective and trying to shelter his children, it’s a very classic trope. Danzig got into drugs at the early age of 10 so it makes sense that he doesn’t think sheltering kids is a super good idea, because he learned the hard way. He has been sober since he was 15.

    The video for this was insta-banned even on cable channels like MTV.
    MTV even refused to let it play on the 2AM slot where most "banned" or fringe videos were shown.
    In LA we got to see it on the UHF show Video One when they had a guest host as well as a few other places across Canada and the US where they had UHF simulcasts of the show.
    Video one was like MTV except run by radio DJ's and known musicians and in the mid 80's had bands lining up to do interveiws that MTV couldn't even get with them.
    I think the original Night Flights also used to show it.
    Both shows ended the same time the video became banned so they may have just said what the hell.

    The sound you're talking about is basically Rockabilly. If you haven't listened to Volbeat yet, you should. They drew their sound from bands like Misfits and Metallica, so they sounds like a mix between Danzig and Elvis.

    Glen Danzig was the original singer of the misfits. All the classic misfits songs are with Danzig. Classic horror punk with with B horror themes.
    Danzig is much more metal and hard rock but the lyrics remain quite dark and occult.
    Danzig’s vocal style is often described as a cross between Jim Morrison and Elvis. People sometimes refer to him as evil Elvis.

    Ok, so you gotta listen to the Danzig song ‘You And Me (Less Than Zero)’. He recorded the song for the Less Than Zero Motion Picture Soundtrack, under the band name ‘Glenn Danzig and The Power & Fury Orchestra’. The song is actually a ballad. Danzig sounds very Elvis-esque in this song; so much so, that my friend and I used to refer to him as “The Satanic Elvis”.

    Seems like a good reason to request you do some Social Distortion, specifically, When She Begins as I think that song would fit Lex and Brad. Or do some of their songs like Story of My Life or Ball and Chain which were radio friendly songs back in the day. They are not really anything like Danzig, but Chuck Biscuits played drums for both bands at times.
