Glenn Danzig wrote "Mother" in response to Tipper Gore and The Parents Music Resource Center who wanted to censor lyrics in music. He claimed that that they were trying to dictate what music people could listen to. It's how we ended up with Parental Advisory stickers on CD's and Albums. It was released in 1988.
This song had a huge resurgence in 1993 when it was reissued also. I forget the "why" behind it in 93 (perhaps more Tipper Gore tomfoolery), buti do remember it being super popular amongst us college age kids at the time.
@@zmarko I think it started getting more play on headbangers ball, but wasn't that when Danzig III came out too? Could be down to Ricky Rachtman lmao - either way I feel like I was hearing Dirty Black Summer and Mother at the same time in 9th grade, around Halloween.
These guys need to watch dee sniders response to that case.
Danzig 3 came out in 92. The Mother resurgence was because they re-recorded it. Made a new video and released it on Thrall Demonsweat live. Because of the video they got a shitload of MTV and radio play. Original video was banned
Now that we have the luxury of hind-sight. Was Tipper right or wrong? Im thinking she was right. Or at least, not wrong.
Great song. For more Danzig I recommend Twist of Cain, Anything, How The Gods Kill, Devil's Plaything.
All great recommendations!
Don't forget the best lap dance song in the world: "She Rides".
@@beernmetal6964 Awesome 😁
Dirty Black Summer too!!!
Yes!! Dirty Black Summer next, please!
This song was in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Smokey have hollywood sit down and watch a full episode of headbangers ball. Let him experience what us metalheads grew up with.
That's Evil Elvis right there. Love this song and great reaction. Check out some Misfits next, they have some truly dark songs!
Haha I was thinking the same damn thing! Lol
Reminds more of Jim Morrison than Elvis
Danzig sings elvis is a kick ass album
@@coreywickramasekera9968 Check out "American Nightmare" or one of his later Country-Blues songs like "I am the One" - at times he's almost indistinguishably from Elvis.
Fun fact Danzig and the song mother made an appearance on Beavis and Butthead!!!💯 BANGER 💥
Next time you Danzig, literally the whole Lucifuge album bangs.
Ya'll would probably dig some Misfits too.
Straight Banger! Love this!
Have a dope day everyone!
Danzig is like the Misfits motif but more adult and toeing the line between hard rock and metal. Samhain is the band which serves as a missing link between Misfits and them. Largest difference to me is in the quality of the recordings, they went from trash with The Misfits to pretty decent with Samhain, then with Danzig's first album it got fully up to par. First time I heard them I was in my first detention in 9th grade, which feels appropriate.
Hell yeah!! I love his voice. Thanks guys
All swole 5 foot 3 of Glen Danzig wearing platform boots to make him look 6 foot tall with Elvis swag. An interesting human to say the very least. He sold his "haunted" house in California awhile back leaving things like skulls, random figurines, a matress with no box springs and a teddy bear sleeping on top, books and boxes of Count Chocula and Frankenberry. He got 1.2 million as is for that run down shit hole lol.
Twist of Cain or Her Black Wings next from them.
If you listen close you will come to realize that Glenn Danzig sounds a lot like Jim Morrison.
I always thought so to.
He’s a combo of Roy Orbison, Jim Morrison, and Elvis
Great reaction. Love the trivia. Keep rollin’ sirs!
"Before You Die" MUST HEAR Classics,,
Free "All Right Now"
Argent "Hold Your Head Up"
Head East "Never Been Any Reason"
Vanilla Fudge "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
The Electric Prunes "I Had Too Much To Dream" (Last Night)
Til your bleeding! Amazing jam and a definite fave of mine for show
Danzig is a great way to start a Wednesday morning. Her Black Wings is my vote for next song!
Speaking Of Him...Both MUST HEAR Classics,, Elton John "Levon" & "Madman Across The Water"
Danzig and the rest of Misfits grew up in Lodi NJ literally 20 minutes from me. They are the quintessential standard for horror punk. He is a fairly arrogant but confident individual who is still fairly jacked. He wears boots with heels to appear taller on stage because he is only 5’4”. Regardless of what you think of him, he set the bar with his unique metal Elvis voice reminiscent of Michael Paulson of Volbeat. Great reaction as always guys. I’m gonna continue requesting Beartooth-Devastation every time now. Be well brothers!!!
“I bet you’re fromLodi.”
“No Weehauken.”
“Oh, my condolences.”
Recommend Snakes of Christ, Am I Demon and How the Gods Kill, but he also wrote the song Thirteen for Johnny Cash.
Too many Misfits songs to recommend but Astro Zombies, Hybrid Moments and Die Die My Darling are all solid.
Morning! Oh hell ya! I love this song! Haven't heard it in a minute though! Great reaction guys! 🤓❤️
When Released,, This Track Would Become An Instant Classic,, Billy Thorpe "Children Of The Sun" (Exclusive Video)
You guys are fuckin awesome. Favorite music reaction channel. Also Danzig is the German name of a city that used to be in Germany, but now it's part of Poland and called Gdansk.
Did not know that. My wife is from Poland and we have visited her best friend in Gdansk several times.
@@jgsrhythm100 Pretty much the entirety of northern Poland along the Baltic was Prussia, the founding state of Germany and the place where the old kaisers were from. It was given two Poland after WW2.
@@terryhiggins5077 That I did know. The Dsnzig connection I did not. Have driven from Warsaw to Gdansk several times.
Boyz, I want both of your shirts 💪😆 Amazing! Tx for the react 🤟
Search the YT Vid "Danzig Getting Knocked Out". Happened here in AZ baby!
I remember being a teenager when I first heard about that. It was like an underground rumor for the longest time cause MTV and news stations wouldn't confirm or even cover the story. I think it was a music documentary about another band where I learned about it. It's Killin me cause I can't remember who knocked him out now, but it basically confirmed that he was more mouth than muscle.
Mother is always that one song reactors know of Danzig and even though they all love it I never saw any channel take on another Danzig song after that. Please do us and yourselves a favor and be different, they're worth it. Next Danzig songs to hit should be: Twist of Cain, Dirty Black Summer, Long Way Back From Hell, Her Black Wings, Am I Demon.
And yes, Glenn Danzig founded The Misfits in 1977, he was their lead singer until 1983 when he left them. Misfits was a horror punk band, Danzig is pure hard rock with heavy blues influences.
Glenn Danzig's voice is often compared to that of Elvis Presley which brought him the nickname 'Evil Elvis' or also 'Gothic Elvis'. In 2020 Danzig actually released an album of Elvis cover versions, that's his kind of humor, I guess... lol
Danzig are Americans, named that way because it's the surname of Glenn Danzig (his real name is Glenn Allen Anzalone), but don't ask me why he has given himself that name. Maybe he just thought it sounded cool. Danzig is actually the German name for the Polish city of Gdańsk (Glenn Danzig has German roots as well as Italian and Scottish, but was born in New Jersey).
That's the most US thing right there... having roots and making a massive deal out of it
@@Sadion666And? Why do you care that folks want to know where they come from? People shit on Americans for appreciating their heritage while claiming in the same breath they live on stolen land.
Thanks to guitar hero to let me know this bands!!!! Regards from Argentina!!!
When my son was born i used to sing this to my partner all the time as she was a new mother, she hated it so i found the single, bought it and got it for her as a MOTHERs day present haha memories ill never forget
Love the shirt Hollywood, Just love Queensryche. Great song - Mother, I remember when it came out.
Check out Danzig song called last ride over thirty years later from mother
Rallo singing this on the Cleveland show was funny af
Always reminds me of the "Hangover" movie, where they went to vegas! 😁
One of my favorites. He's got a voice like Elvis crossed with Jim Morrison from The Doors.
I sang in rock/punk bands in the 80's and 90's and for a charity reunion, we did this. Had an absolute blast doing it. 🤘
Should have done the live video! Glenn Danzig looks like Wolverine!
Danzig is now Gdańsk, Poland. It was a free city surrounded by Germany and Poland and protected by the League of Nations until after WW2 when it became Gdańsk, Poland. I remember looking it up because of the David Gilmour Live in Gdańsk.
Also this is another song off Guitar Hero. 😂
Love this song but........every time I hear it now I can't help hearing Rallo from the Cleveland show 🤣🤣🤣
That's great, now I will to.
Afternoon guys! Loved this song in the early 90s and yes, Tiny Dancer was released in 1971! Awesome reaction and wonderful choice!
🤘🏼💙🤘🏼
Danzig is one of those angry South Pole elves
Not an elf 😂. He is short though.
His first three solo albums were amazing. The band he had backing him up were incredible players, and, they were produced by the master, Rick Rubin. John Christ, Eerie Von, and, Chuck Biscuits made these albums great.
Danzig's first solo record was released in 1988. There used to be a dancer at my favorite juice bar that used to strip to this, "Twist of Cain", "Her Black Wings", and, "Dirty Black Summer".
Yeah, Glenn Allen "Danzig" Anzelone, from Lodi, NJ, is only 5'3".
Danzig: HOW THE GODS KILL!!! 🔥
It was great time growing up in the 80s and listening to this cool stuff for the first time.
Danzig is basically Elvis/Jim Morrison meets Black Sabbath. You guys should absolutely listen to Dirty Black Summer by Danzig.
Glenn Danzig IS the MISFITS. His enthusiasm for the Horror comics of the 1950s and 60s is reflected in every MISFITS song and in the band’s visual style.
The music of his band DANZIG is unlike any other; it is a genre to itself.
You should check out MISFITS songs. They are very short, so do five at a time.
I saw him on Halloween in '92 at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Irvine, CA. He recorded & filmed that performance. The opening act was White Zombie. Such a phenomenal performance
damn, this immediately took me back to 2004, playing GTA: San Andreas
Danzig sang in the the misfits pretty much the progenitors of horror punk. His solo stuff is pretty much hard rock/heavy metal.
I remember this song was and still is superfire. I remember when I was a kid and I got a guitar I wanted to be like Danzig but I didn't practice my guitar enough to get any better. Nowadays I just play my ukulele. Ooh maybe I'll try to figure out this song on the ukulele.😊
Saw someone down in the comments requesting SKINNY PUPPY. I would say, do it! Start with "Smothered hope" maybe or "Worlock". Iconic '80s Industrial Band. They were the reason Ministry turned from Synth-Pop into an Industrial Band.
Danzig and Misfits create fairly different types of music despite Glenn Danzig being the lead singer in both bands. There are a lot of really good Danzig songs out there though, Dirty Black Summer, Bodies, Twist of Cain, etc...
This record is so goddamn epic. Have been listening it since 1988.
I remember thinking when they first started talking about an xmen movie that he should play wolverine
Bad omen - like a villain 💯🔥
Ya'll need to react to Skinny Puppy. Some suggestions would be Cult, Nature's Revenge, Worlock. But really you can't go wrong with any.
Tin Omen, Inquisition, Glass houses, Smothered hope, ..................
You need to see the actual unedited official video for this. Also the early 90s live version put Danzig on the map as rockstar.
Wow! I was taken back down memory lane, this song was a staple on Guitar Hero’s…. Dammit now I want to dust off my PlayStation 3 😂😂😂
HEY! G'morning

as a kid growing up thru the 70s & 80s
Danzig - " Mother "
- their most popular hit song & radio hit
©1988
- & yes, Glenn Danzig was from the former band,
The Misfits, 1977 - 1988
& Glenn was in the band Samhain after splitting with
The Misfits & went his solo band
Meaning:
Written by lead singer Glenn Danzig, "Mother" is rather vague and cryptic. One interpretation is that Danzig is beginning a descent into something evil, probably Satanism, and his family is concerned. Throughout the song he tells his mother and father to stay away, as he can't be helped, and he's definitely not suitable for children:
Tell your children not to walk my way
Tell your children not to hear my words
In an interview with Big Brother magazine, Danzig offered a rare explanation of his lyrics, claiming the inspiration for "Mother" was Tipper Gore, who as a member of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) pushed for regulations on music she felt was harmful to children. As a result, the record industry agreed to place warning stickers on albums with explicit content.

Similar to Danzing
Dancing comes from a Punk background
The Cult Brotish Goth
This brings me back to my early childhood in the late 80’s when it came out because my older sister was a metalhead so I grew up on this song just like Danzig’s previous bands The Legendary horror punks The Misfits and Samhain
i'd love to know if smokey ever screams internally when hollywood pauses a good song a few seconds in lol happens a lot.
Ok guys, You are probably tired of me talking about all the shows I've been to but I also saw Danzig in 1988 at a little club in what's called The U District in Seattle. It was so crowded and so Hot I remember. I remember also being on the floor and getting caught up in the crowd and falling backwards. I happened to be wearing my Leather of course and one of the guys I was there with caught me by my collar just before I was about to hit the floor with someone on top of me. A very vivid memory.
Genre I will say is Goth Metal and yes this came out in the late 80s. He had very iconic artwork and I believe this was his first solo work after the Misfits.
Yes, Danzig wasn't tall but, He was Built like a brick shithouse.
In the late 80's there was a movement of bands that were not hair metal & merged alternative and hard rock before Grunge & Nirvana. I would argue they opened the door for Grunge.
Danzig ,The Cult, Kings X, Living Colour
Fishbone, Urban Dance Squad, Faith No More, Janes Addiction (all debuted late 80's). Check
The Cult- " Love Removal Machine (87)
Kings X- Over My Head (89)
Shoutout to H6 for rocking that Queensryche tee!
Danzig - Pain In The World ☠️
how the gods kill by Danzig. you will not be disappointed
Rappers understand lyrics. Glad to see someone reacting to them.
Coheed and Cambria does a hell of a cover of this live.
Glen Danzig is awesome How the Gods Kill, Lilin, Skincarver are just a few other great songs
How the gods kill is WICKED FUCKING WICKED
As a teenager, I painted the Danzig Skull Logo on my best friends wall. It Was 6ft Wide and Sweet as HELL!
It's actually "hold me closer tiny Danzig" because the dudes like 5'2".
I saw him at the Cain's Ballroom in 92, in between threatening to kick people's asses he put on a hellava show. Sounded better live than recorded. He was equal parts amazing singer ( the evil Elvis) and giant jackass.
Guy is thick as f though
@@Kotake10That's cuz he's only 5'3". Easy to look massive on a tiny frame like that.
Fucking love the Tool & Alex Grey posters in the background!! Hahaha, y'all are the coolest.
Genres.. I don't think I'm the right person to say what genre things are. I'm just not it. But what I do think is, that the most interesting music is the one that it's hardest to put a genre on. Think Prodigy, Massive Attack, Pink Floyd (created their own genre haha), TOOL, Gojira, and so many who I just wouldn't be content putting into a single genre. Blessings & much love.
:P
Danzig was formed in my hometown of lodi new jersey ! Glenn had one hell of a voice too 👌
Such a great voice. My favourite track is Tired Of Being Alive off Lucifuge II.
YES!!! my favorite album of theirs. That & the 1st one.
This always reminds me of Beavis and Butthead. Think they used both videos of this song Danzig made. I remember Butthead saying "for such a big muscular dude he sure sings like a wuss" Lol Pretty sure that was in another Danzig song "How gods kill" Great song! This was in the show "The Cleveland Show" and probably many more. I'm sure you heard somewhere.
You should do some Danzig Era Misfits! Classic punk style with Danzig killer vocals!
Just saw Elton John here in Phoenix, the guy still brings it at 75 years old.
Danzig also has Doyle W.V. Frankenstein for backup, another guy who likes to fight and is twice Glenn's size 😁
Doyle was in the Misfits with Danzig, and he's appeared on stage with him numerous times, but he's never TECHnically been a member of the band Danzig 😉. Not trying to be a dick 😆. Just trying to pass on the knowledge of an old school 'head 😁
The modern day Elvis, lol. Saw Danzig and Suicidal Tendencies open for Metallica (when they were good), banger of a show! By far their most popular / commercially known song, I prefer Thirteen from the Hangover soundtrack. When you getting back to Lovebites, remember them? All female Japanese band that you fell in love with reacting to Shadowmaker MV. You guys were totally hypnotized by their guitar solos and drumming. If you ever get back to them, check out Holy War live 2021. Can these ladies play!
Glad you enjoyed it! Please do the video version of "how the Gods kill" by Danzig
Fun fact, the opening riff is "stolen" from Michael Jacksons "Dirty Diana", there it is the opening bass-line.
F'n Metal Elvis
Danzig is a heavy metal band but the singer was in Misfits hence the punk sound.
How about his song Tired of Being Alive?
Hollywood going say “No I do not.” I was laughing so hard
Hey Guys…y’all def need to check out Amyl and the Sniffers, they’re from Australia and are blowing up worldwide! They say dynamite comes in small packages, and that certainly applies to their singer, Amy. I love her, and that band is REAL. Some are saying it’s the best punk music in the last 20 years! I know y’all will really love them…please do check them out!!
(I know this is off topic, but I didn’t know where else to share it!)
Songs to do from Danzig, How The Gods Kill, Twist Of Cain, Tired Of Being Alive, Her Black Wings, Dirty Black Summer
This music makes me want to ride a Harley out into the desert for some reason
This was a song about the PMRC. They put the “Parental advisory explicit lyrics” sticker on CD’s. Which just told me which CD’s to buy. 😂😂😂 The video was great as well, check this out when you get a chance. Always check out the Danzig videos, they are so weird.
My old band used to cover this one and Twist of Cain.
Danzig recommendations Left Hand Black, Snakes of Christ, Dirty Black Summer pretty much anything off Lucifuge
Twist of Cain!! How the Gods kill!!
I’m still still trying to figure out what genre is Kim Dracula- Make Me Famous is. ADHD heaven.
Hell yeah! You gotta check out Misfits. So good. We used to roll around getting fucked up and vandalizing shit listening to them when I was a teenager. That's when this came out. My Dad found a stop sign in my room and was like, where did you get this?!? From down the road Dad. He was pissed.
This was my team "lay down and mentally observe" how to win
I really would love you two to check out Dog Fashion Disco. They are my favorite band. I know they are not a huge band but I would love to see some reactions to something really different on these channels. The way I would describe the band is a mix between Mr Bungle and Ministry. They combine so many genres and I find them brilliant. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to have my favorite personalities on youtube (you two) react because I don't have the money to pay for it. I would love to hear what you two think of Dog Fashion Disco's Grand Experiment. Fingers crossed...maybe I will get lucky. I think y'all will love the blend of genres in just that one song alone and the balls of the lyrics Todd Smith writes. You two keep being awesome. I know the chances of getting this done is slim to none but I will keep watching regardless. I don't mean to get sentimental but y'alls videos have gotten me through a lot of depression lately. Thank you for that.
Literally the best description I've ever heard of any band was of DFD just before the song started playing:
"Y'know that feeling when you're being chased through a forest by a naked clown with a chainsaw? That's Dog Fashion Disco."
@@mikethemotormouth I love them so much. The combination of so many other genres that they are able to blend with their sound is so impressive. I hope people see my post and help me get this band played. Their catalogue is fairly large but I thought I'd request something from their newest album that was released earlier this year because they most certainly still have the goods. They most certainly deserve to be recognized and reacted to. They have been killing it in music for so long but if you look up DFD reactions you will only find a handful of them and that is very unfortunate. People forget that this band is so good that Serj from SOAD and Neil Fallon from Cutch have both done songs with them. DFD fans call themselves members of the Mushroom Cult which is actually the title of the track that Serj sang on.
I would just call it rock too, this song rocks lol love that lil mini guitar solo too 🔥
It's interesting that a lot of artists "Signature" songs"are catchy /good but don't represent their best work.
Danzig is awesome!
After the Misfits but before Danzig he was in a band called Samhain . November Coming Fire is a good song from them if your interested
Rick Rubin is the magic wizard that produced this iconic album for Danzig. U can hear his work on Cult Electric just raw rock crispy edge. And he did the Beastie Boys early era. Later works included System of the Down so many more. Rick Rubin is dah man!
