This song was actually written in response to Tipper Gore and her crusade to censor music. So she is actually the titular "Mother". It just makes the song and the lyrics bang so much harder.
Glenn Danzig modeled his vocal style after 3 of his heroes: Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, and Roy Orbison. Once you know that, you can hear it everywhere in all of his songs.
Before Glenn Danzig started his solo career, he was in one of the most influential bands in heavy music, The Misfits. They influenced everyone from Metallica to Guns N Roses to Rob Zombie, and legions of punk rock bands. The bands logo is iconic and you have probably seen it before
my favorite Misfits story, courtesy of Henry Rollins: "we had just played a show in Berlin and we went to this really shitty dive bar after. While we were getting drinks, I heard the absolute worst Misfits cover band in existence playing in the other room. They were so bad that I just had to go see what was going on. I when into the other room and it turns out it wasn't a cover band... It was just the Misfits"

30+ years later and still none of us can say the word "Mother" any other way. Also, Danzig is very underrated. Their first 3 albums are all good, hard, bluesy rock and the fourth album makes you want to hide under your bed.
I have everything Glenn Danzig has ever done, including his two "classical" albums and the Elvis album. His voice is like magic. I still fall asleep to Black Aria I.
I think the second album was the best of the first three. The first one they were learning who they were and the third they were having their issues, that lead to the end of the classic line up.
As far as the meaning/backstory of the song. In an interview with Big Brother magazine, Danzig offered a rare explanation of his lyrics, claiming the inspiration for "Mother" was Tipper Gore, who as a member of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) pushed for regulations on music she felt was harmful to children. As a result, the record industry agreed to place warning stickers on albums with explicit content. "I wrote 'Mother' about he PMRC and parents who tell their kids what to listen to. Parents should guide their children, not live their lives for them. Kids should discover life on their own."
Awesome fact! I feel like there should be a list of all the great songs that were written because of Tipper Gore and put out on one album. So many out there
Without knowing about this Interview I always thought I bet it’s something about Tippers shenanigans. The timing seems prescient for it as well. It’s wild what we lived through with all that. It’s sad to see what the kids coming out today with the Nu metal scene and the topics they’re tackling. Btw- did you know big brother was the one non noodie magazine Larry flint owned? He really appreciated the boundaries they were pushing with speech and expression so he bought it up.
Danzig has been around forever. I love this guy. He was my gateway drug into a lot of different music, in the 90s. His original bands, the Misfits (late 70s, early 80s) and Samhain are amazing. Nerd note, this song was written in response to Tipper Gore and the music councils Parental Advisory Stickers forced onto albums back in the day;)
I actually also loved the "classical" instrumental he released after How the Gods Kill! I bought the tape as soon as it came out. I remember they played it at the opening of their 1993 concert.
In his prime, Danzig WAS the "Evil Elvis". While his ability to produce and honestly sing these days is lacking, the first 3 or 4 Danzig albums are INCREDIBLE. Just incredibly listenable heavy metal.
I saw him live last year, and he was album quality. He sang all the hits from 1-3. I’m going to see him again in September for the 35th anniversary of the first album. The concert will be an album play through.
Spot on. In 1996 I was so stoked for Backacidevil...and then it dropped. I've always hated industrial type music, so I absolutely hated it. Danzig 4 was good, but 1-3 were gold!
I just appreciate that a vocal aficionado with real skill is showing respect to corners of the music world that are long overlooked and relegated as immature. She treats it with real respect and pulls it apart in really intelligent ways.
@@marcoreiter5799 I did drunk karaoke in a mostly black bar, being white myself, and sang Thank God I'm a Country Boy in the style of Pauly Shore. I expected to either get my ass kicked or make people laugh. Luckily everyone thought I was hilarious!
Prior to this band, Glenn Danzig was a founding member of the horror punk band The Misfits from 1977-1983 (surely you’ve seen people wearing T-shirt’s with the giant Misfits skull on them). After that, he started the horror punk/gothic rock band Samhain from 1983/84-1986. In 1986/87, hoping to take the band in a rock/metal direction, Samhain’s guitarist was changed and then the drummer as well. Around the same time, Glenn Danzig changed the band’s name to Danzig, so that regardless of any future personal changes, there would be the appearance of continuity.
The first fan they show in the video was someone who clearly painted their face and rocked the Misfits hairstyle (I'd argue Glen's is still pretty close to it, even if he grew out the rest) -- kind of curious about why that was included considering how bad the break-up of the band was...
remember when he was sore about leaving misfits, was at a danzing concert he instructed the crowd to beat anyone up wearing a misfits shirt. a lot of people were topless soon.
Don't forget about Samhain.. many Danzig songs were Samhain songs before they were Danzig songs. And yeah, Misfits did a tour in 2019 with Danzig, the brothers and Dave Lombardo.
Danzig 1 & 2 were always on repeat from 88-95.. & I'm sad I never got to see Danzig live with Crist & Biscuits There were so many good bands back then, they had to be good to break out in our world.
I saw Danzig live with Doyle. They had a Danzig, misfits and samhain on their setlist. Awesome show. I will never forget it because now I don't think Glenn really appreciates cameras recording them while playing live. He pointed up at me while I was recording from the balcony. I felt on the spot so I put it down immediately. Then he threw some horns at me. It was a "just live the moment, kid. Have fun." kind of thing. Been living since.
I saw him with Doyle in Seattle way back was so good. I was crowd surfing and he reached his hand out to me. Was like that painting of the guy touching fingers with God. But security ripped me away 😢 I met Doyle once. Die is way too chill 😂
I understand not wanting to be filmed. I think it's horribly rude if you're at a concert. That said, as much as I like his voice, he's a total fuckin' prick. His music is great (especially with the Misfits), but he's just an angry little meathead. Basically, great artist, complete douche of a human being.
@@richardponton3920 He is a control freak .. he has had video's from the Jon Stewart show , taken off youtube before which don't even really belong to him . John Christ did a live cover of Mother a few years back that was recorded and posted . It suddenly got removed . Danzig sucks
I hope I didn't misunderstand your comment. We're all entitled to our opinion. I respect yours. I'm not even a big Danzig fan... but Glenn is legendary. He could front any rock/metal band.
@@twidget59 I'm a huge Danzig fan. He has been quoted as stating his biggest influences while growing up to be Elvis, Roy Orbison, and Jim Morrison. He developed his own swoony singing style, based on them. It's not an insult. Don't look for trouble when there is none.
You'll want to do a reaction to "How the Gods Kill" from his Danzig III: How the Gods Kill Album from 1992. Probably the peak of his vocal powers. To be noted that he was the originator of the legendary punk group The Misfits, and experimental goth rock/punk/metal hybrid Samhain prior to forming the more blues metal/hard rock band Danzig. Essentially these bands morphed into one another as his musicianship/songwriting improved as did his choices in bandmates. His vocal technique is rooted in his love for Elvis, The Doors, Roy Orbison, Albert King, the delta blues, not just the artist Howlin' Wolf, and all the sell your soul folklore and voodoo the blues carries, but the actual howls of wolves. Put that in a pot with Black Sabbath and you got Danzig. Of interest to newcomers such as yourself is that Danzig has composed 2 original classical instrumental albums (Black Aria I and II), released an album of Elvis covers, and wrote a song each for both Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash that were up there with their best work. But back to the point - How the Gods Kill or Devil's Plaything from 1990's "Lucifuge." You will not be disappointed.
As the years have gone by I've found II to be my favorite overall album he composed. Just so much happening musically and stylistically, none of which feels out of place in the overall orchestration of the collective whole.
I'll go with Thrall/DemonSweat for her to listen to next. So many underrated, unrecognized songs on that album. It's Coming Down is probably one of my favorite Danzig songs of all time. "I'm on fire, and I need a hole."
I had a chance to see all 3 perform at the Newport in Columbus. Yep, Danzig stayed on stage for each and every set. Except for abuot 30 seconds when he elbow dropped off the stage to knock out some asshole in the pit.
What I think I love most about your channel is the sheer joy you get listening to the music I grew up with and were told repeatedly “it’s not real music. It’s just noise.” And then, as a vocal expert you break it down and showcase all the talent that the “real music lovers” couldn’t see. It’s so validating and I love just watching you share in the wonder I had as a kid with these songs. Thank you for being you and putting this channel out.
100% appreciate the validation. Couldn't count how many times I heard that my music was just noise. Love Elizabeth, and her enjoyment. I'm not a huge Danzig fan, but this is great. I didn't think it was possible to love Dio more than I always have, but after watching her react to him, I absolutely love him more because of her 😍
I grew up with that religious nonsense--they'd rag about how all the songs talked about "Love" and how that was just repeated and drawn out and said differently (LoooOOOoovvveeeeee), but this stuff from 200 years ago, now THAT's music! And what do I hear? Handel's Messiah, where they spend 2 minutes drawing out the word "hallelujah", and another 10 just repeating the word. Such hypocrisy!
I can get that more extreme metal (or other experimental music) might sound as "just noise" for an untrained ear, but a person who says the same about Danzig seriously lacks musical sensibility.
Ever since I discovered this channel a year ago, I've been hoping that you'd someday cover Glenn Danzig. My first choice would probably be the song "How the Gods Kill", but still, to see you doing any Danzig song at all totally rules. He's such a unique voice in metal
I LOVE How The Gods Kill! His vocals and the music and just all of it! I swear, Glenn Danzig was making me feel inappropriate things before puberty really took hold.
The song is about censorship of art. Back when people (mothers who got in a group together) wanted to ban certain art and ended up with the "compromise" of the parental advice button you can still find on records. This is Glenns message to these parents.
And that period of time brought out some interesting champions, including the lead singer of Twisted Sister front and center testifying in front of congress. Always nice to see artists realizing and fighting for free speech and artistic license.
Yeah there was some pretty bipartisan moves to keep "the youth" from being exposed to "inappropriate" music as part of Nancy Reagans "just say no" campaign which was about more than just drugs and Tipper Gore helping to found the Parents Music Resource Center in the mid 80s as was said a bunch of people came to DC about this issue that you might not expect.
PMRC, Parents Music Resource Center, as I recall which got warning labels placed on albums. Jackyl also has a song/video that addressed this topic back in the early 90s.
You need to hear him singing "Blood and Tears" or "How the Gods Kill". Danzig is a unique band, it's like hard jazzy blues rock/metal. Also, unfortunelly, you won't find professional live recordings from Danzig simply because Glenn does not allow.
This song is about the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center.) It was written for Tipper Gore, (Al Gore’s wife) the founder of the PMRC. They are the reason we had “Parental Advisory” stickers on Tapes and CD’s. Which, as a teenager, just told which CD’s I should definitely listen to. 😂 😂😂 You should definitely listen to The Misfits now. That’s what Glenn Danzig is famous for. I’d recommend “Hybrid Moments” “Some kind of hate” “Astro Zombies.” “Vampira” “Bullet”. Not all Misfits songs are the same in sound and quality.
I never went down the Danzig rabbit hole, but I did love a few of their songs and saw them once live. Just created a play list and added every single one of these songs. Thanks for the tip
I always love how you have a giddiness when you enjoy songs you hear for the first time, that I've enjoyed my entire life. It's almost like I'm listening to these songs for the first time through your eyes, remembering those "woah, that sounds so good" moments, and I thank you for that. Your analysis here helps me appreciate Glenn's talent that much more.
I couldn't quite put my finger why I stuck around her channel. But you put it quite nicely. There's something magical in sharing that enthusiasm and enjoyment when someone discovers something that you enjoy. :D
She's great! She says what I'm thinking, just much more technical knowledge. Perhaps she explains what I hear? I know I like it, then she tells us why.
My first boyfriend introduced me to Danzig back in 1993. Being more of a jazz/blues girl, I wasn't a fan of many of the bands he was into, but "Mother" quickly became one of my favorites, so I was amazed how you pointed out that his voice is sort of jazzy/smokey. Maybe that's why I really liked this song.
This first Danzig's algum is just precious. It has a Dark Metal Blues quality seen in the first two Sabbath albums but incremented with a Morrison/Elvis vocal.
@@ferox965That's a great mention, I would love for her to hear the beginning of "Heart of the Devil". And since she knows some Johnny Cash, maybe the song Thirteen that Glenn wrote for him...
Anyone else get excited when she gave her first impressions thinking, "girl, you have no idea what kind of treat youre in for" Glenn Danzig is one of rocks greatest voices
The tones and energy he builds in his delivery is really fitting for the lyrics of this song. It's as if he starts with a conversation with parents that builds to a challenge, an argument.
Absolutely love your reaction and giggling to one of my all time favourite songs! It always gives me goosebumps, whether I listen to it in the car or at the gym. Special tune.
They are great band.glad I had the chance to see them when I was in my early teenage years at molson Parkin Barrie Ont, Canada.over 25 years ago but still great memory.there song bodies is another of my favourites.

@@AliceBowie Yes I was real obsessed with them too! They were just different from what was out at that time, and that’s what intrigued me the most. I was blessed to meet Doyle Wolfgang and tell him how much their music made my youth awesome.

Holy crap...I've been suggesting this for two years! I'm a bit too young to have seen the original Misfits back in the day (they were a hugely influential horror punk band), but I caught Glenn and the boys opening for Slayer in Cleveland on their first tour in '88. I'm so stoked for this....
I bought the Bullet single in the summer of '78. There was nothing like it at all. It was instantly liikeable. The lyrics were mind blowing. When I introduced the song to a college friend in the fall of '79, it blew his mind so much, for the next week he would just wander around in a daze, sayinng, "Suck Suck Jackie Suck"... his mind was completely blown.
The Original Misfits are on tour right now, we saw them last week! Fear opened, Megadeth as special guest. I never really listened to them but refreshed before the show...still so much energy!
@@stevetremblay961I saw them a few years back when they reunited with Glenn, it was awesome. Doyle still looks like he could beat someone senseless...the '86 self-titled release is a sort of a twenty, best of, hits compilation and covers a lot of the high points of Glenn's time in The Misfits. His band Samhain was really a migration from The Misfits into Danzig and had a revolving door policy with members until Chuck Biscuits finally joined Glenn, John Christ, and Eerie Von and changed the bands name. Cool shit...
Been a Danzig fan all of my life. As a few others have stated you need to listen to ...How The Gods Kill and Blood and Tears for his vocal range. Glenn is a huge Elvis fan and he def used Elvis as inspiration in his delivery. Glenn has a very powerful voice and is one of my Favorite Metal and Punk singers. His early ion life Punk Band The Misfits is one of the most popular Punk Bands of all time. He was a teenager at the time and wrote most all the material. The Song Skulls would be a good place to start with the Misfits.
Spot on with this review ma’am. You’ve got a great ear, matched with well-versed narration. As a big Danzig fan, you did well in giving and taking when needed. If any critique, I would listen through and separate the review so the song is not as interrupted. Enjoyed your energy throughout.
" How the Gods kill" should definitely be on your list. I've been waiting for you to get to Danzig for awhile. On a different note ,Hopefully I can one day hear your take on Joey Ramones vocals as well.
One of my all time favorite bands. Had the privilege of meeting Eerie Von and he is one amazing guy. Got to meet Glenn Danzig too, in the late 90’s, and he is one odd cat but very very kind and polite. At least he was with me. Kick ass band. I played Twist Of Cain for my high school junior guitar class final and got an A+.
Glenn is quite a diverse artist…as mentioned before with the Misfits and Samhain, but his solo “Aria” album will catch you off guard. He’s quite the writer as well…contributing songs to Johnny Cash’s comeback album and even doing some work with movie soundtracks too. I’ve enjoyed his music since I was a teenager. Vocalists like him aren’t too common nowadays
As a child of the 80s, I grew up with amazing music that modern kids just wouldn't get. DIO, Maiden, judas preist, early metallica, GNR, scorpions. It was great.
Yeah, kids these days have been deprived. They dont call them "songs" anymore, they call them "beats" or "tracks". Either theyre listening to some flavor of the week hip hop, or theyre listening to video game music, beeping and booping. All the artists are dead and gone. The art of songwriting died in 1998.
@@FloorManiac Sounds to me like you're listening to dead people. Don't get me wrong, I do too, but there are plenty of active bands with creative songwriting, and some even conservatively release NWOBHM type stuff, heck there are even live shows and festivals that todays teens go to. Maybe you're just an elitist.
HELL YES! Was listening to Danzig the other day and thought it would be great if Elizabeth gets to this! Looking forward to it. Though I wouldn't say Danzig ever had "harsh vocals."
Check out his first band The Misfits (late 70’s early 80’s) then Samhain (early to mid 80’s). Glenn is hands down one the greatest vocalist. He’s 68 years old now and still is a vocal beast.
Danzig is one of the most underrated singers. A huge influence on Metallica. I saw an interview with him and he wanted to work with blues legend Willie Dixon. The range of music he has produced is incredible. He won an award from a classical music station in the UK for his album Black Aria if memory serves
This is just one of those songs that hits so hard... I'm thinking about covering this in my 90's grunge/punk band. We don't do many covers but the energy on this just undeniable. The way my voice is it lends itself to the Danzig/pearljam deeper base pitch with a clean note carry release... not sure that's the right word for it as I've never took voice lessons, but I'm sure you can get my point
I’ve seen him 5 times, well make that 3 because he walked off stage twice. Guys got a killer voice and I’ve been a fan since misfits. But the guys a dickhead.
It did for me the one time I saw them live. The guitars were so fucking loud, they were distorting, and the only song I could understand him was this one. Side note though, at this show, I fell in love with Type 0 Negative. For my friends and I that went to this show, they stole the show
it's such genius songwriting, how he sings soothingly to the mother but keeps this deep wickedness in his tone to where WE know his motives aren't pure but the mom thinks it's a genuine warning. Then he gets much more aggressive, direct and confrontational with the father, even taunting him and challenging him. Playing on each parent's fears and worries at the same time but in the most effective way per parent.
Prexactly! No one has even mentioned that he's a literal musical phenom, epic poet, and lyrical fucking genius. That's why his music sounds like it does and has literally lasted the test of time and spanned 50 years.
At the same time though Danzig is known to have satanic tones and the terms "Mother and Father" is routed in biblical statements. People usually pray to the "Mother of the Holy Spirit" in Catholicism and the Father is in reference to God himself. The song can be seen as a song about a man telling off parents or it can be seen as "I'm evil incarnate and I'm telling you bluntly I'm not going to bow down and I'm going to show your daughter my evil tonight." Regardless, song freaking rocks.
From Misfits to Samhain to Danzig different vocals, and amazing, loved his voice in the Danzig area, and the fact he wrote a song for Johnny Cash to sing even better
The joke about the Misfits in the 80’s was that there were more Misfits T-Shirts, probably 10-1 than albums the band had ever sold in their whole career, so most likely a large number of people wearing the T-shirts never even heard the band. I still have trouble understanding how that happened, other than they had great T-shirt designs or rebellious status symbol?
This song encapsulates a time when big theatrical songs wasn't always the answer to good music. Danzing showed you could take a simple song (hell the bass player only had 3 notes to play) perform it like it's going to be your only hit and ride the wave. Miss those days.
YES!! YES!! YES!! FINALLY!!! Other Danzig songs to check out: "Dirty Black Summer", "Her Black Wings", "Am I Demon", "She Rides", "How the Gods Kill", and "Killer Wolf".
In an interview with Big Brother magazine, Danzig offered a rare explanation of his lyrics, claiming the inspiration for "Mother" was Tipper Gore, who as a member of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) pushed for regulations on music she felt was harmful to children.
There are videos of the obscenity hearing featuring the Gores. Musicians from many genres testified against the PMRC including Dee Snider (from Twisted Sister), Frank Zappa, and John Denver. All of them outclassed and destroyed the stuffy politicians arguments including John Denver (Who was running late for a meeting with NASA).
Danzig's first three albums are fantastic and and really enjoyable. I definitely recommend "How the Gods Kill" as a vocally focused track for you to do by them next.
"How the Gods Kill" and "She Rides" are definitely worth checking out as well. Also, this album was recorded right after The Cult's "Electric" album by the same producer, Rick Ruben. If you listen to the two albums back to back, you can hear the similarities. Particularly in the sound of the guitars and drums.
how the gods kill is my shit!! that one sistinas & godless are my favorite Danzig records but htgk man that song is🔥🔥first time hearing it, i was completely caught off guard by that one part, u know which part i mean😏haha but how it starts off from slow & soft then all of a sudden out of nowhere violence & chaos just kicks in. that was foul how they did that lol but yea good shit man that song still blows me away!! nice one bro! salute.🫡💯

I believe this was the first time I've ever heard someone say a John Christ solo was the "happiest, shortest solo ever"😂 And this is exactly why we love you Elizabeth!!!!
I've seen Danzig about 5 or 6 times throughout the late 80s and and the 90s. He's the most charismatic and friendliest people I've met. So much talent and a very underestimated and misunderstood musician. Humble and appreciative of his fans.
He has a lot of animosity unfairly shared on him. That said, he's had some bumps in his time. He's long tagged to be difficult, but the fallout with Rubin and the following fits of ego, really didn't help him.
@@nivekian I'm not saying he has his fair share of drama but I didn't get any of that attitude every time I talked to him. He was always very friendly and loved all his fans. Even after all those years he never seemed egotistical but that's just my impressions I had.
@@bernadettewolfgang4505 I get that, and they are very gracious with his own fans. And regardless, he's been put in spots with people who are not his fans, and things don't go well. Plus, too many people because of that, come gunning for him.
So many amazing songs. I agree and also "soul on fire". But a one off with a different sound is "You and me" from the less than zero soundtrack. I didn't find it until the mid 2000's since it is on a soundtrack but Glenn is amazing on that track
I love Elizabeth's reactions to metal songs. She is so very talented and knowledgeable, and the way she presents herself on camera is absolutely adorable. She is not only beautiful, but her infectious enthusiasm for her craft and has made me consider learning how to actually learn techniques so that I can confidentiality sing somewhere other than in the car or the shower. Keep up the fantastic work!
Danzig has said that he leaves the meanings of his songs open to interpretation. For me this song is about how many interactions I had with adults as a teenager and young man. Heavy music and skateboarding were a very big part of my lifestyle and adults often thought I’d be trouble and would treat me like a lesser human and my attitude was confrontational towards that. Hearing this song spoke to me and sort of helped me build the confidence to face those confrontations head on instead of letting those people run me down.
Except that in this case, he did provide an explanation. Said it was related to politically motivated censorship of music for minors i.e. the "explicit" rating system.
Misfits and Danzig perfectly capture the intensity of my youth. I lived in the raw, gritty world he describes in Mother, perhaps a bit too long, but I wouldn't trade a second of it. It's a legendary anthem that resonates deeply with those of us who embraced that dark, chaotic energy.
Love this channel. Watching her enjoy these songs makes me remember how much I loved hearing them for the first time. I listened to Mother over and over on road trips in college. When she says it was the "shortest, happiest, guitar solo..." I just smiled. I love this channel, because she is showing how to really appreciate musicians like Danzig and the Who. Keep making videos, please.
I would absolutely LOVE to hear your analysis of John Popper, the lead singer for Blues Traveler. Frankly all of their songs are fantastic, but I think you would get a massive kick out of the song "Hook" most of all. He's got SUCH a unique and interesting voice, and with Hook he really played around a LOT with his voice and it's both mesmerizing and surprising! I really think you'd love him if you haven't heard him before!
I'm glad you got around to analyzing Glenn and explaining his vocal ability. The first three Danzig albums are some of the best in the blues metal genre. Every time I watch this video, i chuckle at the memory of the first time my Mom stopped and watched it. When it ended, she looked at me and said "Good grief! He's sweaty and I'm just going to refer to him as 'His Sweatiness' from now on!'" She likes very little metal from my educating her on it and Danzig is one of the bands she really likes for the bluesy and heavy groove in addition to Glenn's voice.
This is one of my all time favorite driving songs. It is SO hard to rock out to these videos in the middle of the night with my earbuds in, with my wife in bed upstairs.
Glenn Danzig has had a long career in the music industry. Starting out with the punk rock band Misfits. As a dark loner, his goal was to make music that other loners could relate to.

Fatherrrrrrr tooo!!!’
The first four albums are awesome
I think the second album was the best of the first three. The first one they were learning who they were and the third they were having their issues, that lead to the end of the classic line up.
@ThumperE23 Those first three records are classic. For me it's How the Gods Kill. Darkest of the three, borders on doom metal.

Nerd note, this song was written in response to Tipper Gore and the music councils Parental Advisory Stickers forced onto albums back in the day;)
Death" Scream Bloody Gore", full album about this.
I actually also loved the "classical" instrumental he released after How the Gods Kill! I bought the tape as soon as it came out. I remember they played it at the opening of their 1993 concert.

It's kind of funny how many bands wrote songs in response to her.
Just seen this man last week and he blew everyone away being just shy of 70. Feels like he could keep going for another 20 plus. Danzig is legend
In his prime, Danzig WAS the "Evil Elvis". While his ability to produce and honestly sing these days is lacking, the first 3 or 4 Danzig albums are INCREDIBLE. Just incredibly listenable heavy metal.
Referring to Danzig as "Evil Elvis" Made my day. 😂
Right!? I always thought Jim Morrison. But that a good one too
Unfortunately, you're more right than wrong. I still buy anything he puts out, always some gold in there somewhere.
The guy is 68 years old and is still a monster both in physique and in his vocals. Super impressive! Been a fan since The Misfits.
He and the saxophone player in the lost boys...... Man they really made an impression on me ❤
I had no idea he came from the misfits until I read this

Where did you see them
When I saw them, I thought the guitarist and bassist were giants. I didn't realize that Danzig was a munchkin. Good show.
I saw them around then too. I'm pretty sure I have never encountered anything as loud as a Danzig concert, and I've seen hundreds of concerts.

Saw the misfits a few years ago in Austin and Danzig came back and performed with them. Was pretty awesome!
remember when he was sore about leaving misfits, was at a danzing concert he instructed the crowd to beat anyone up wearing a misfits shirt. a lot of people were topless soon.
@@ryanhampson673 Seriously? I never heard about that...that's definitely awesome
Don't forget about Samhain.. many Danzig songs were Samhain songs before they were Danzig songs. And yeah, Misfits did a tour in 2019 with Danzig, the brothers and Dave Lombardo.
Glenn Danzig has spoken for years about wanting to make a dark blues album with Jerry Cantrell. I really wish they'd finally get around to doing it.

Born in '74...me too...
But security ripped me away 😢
I met Doyle once. Die is way too chill 😂
He notoriously does not like people recording his shows.
I understand not wanting to be filmed. I think it's horribly rude if you're at a concert. That said, as much as I like his voice, he's a total fuckin' prick. His music is great (especially with the Misfits), but he's just an angry little meathead. Basically, great artist, complete douche of a human being.

Sistinas would be an interesting one for her to break down from Danzig III. Or Heart of the Devil.
Heart of the Devil is one of my Favorites.
Completely agree.
Well spoken! I love her authenticity!
Oh. Hel. YES!
Definitely How the Gods Kill. Mother is just the front door to all the great Danzig songs :)
Yes, I have suggested the song "How the God's kill" more than once, it would have much more nuances for Elizabeth to wonder about than "Mother".
I love that song... also Warlock is a complete vibe, but mostly slept on by most people imo.
The song is about censorship of art. Back when people (mothers who got in a group together) wanted to ban certain art and ended up with the "compromise" of the parental advice button you can still find on records. This is Glenns message to these parents.
Didn't know that! Thanks.

This song is about the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center.) It was written for Tipper Gore, (Al Gore’s wife) the founder of the PMRC. Which, as a teenager, just told which CD’s I should definitely listen to. 😂 😂😂 You should definitely listen to The Misfits now. That’s what Glenn Danzig is famous for. I've seen Danzig 3 times over the last 25 years, and his voice has never disappointed.
I agree with you. I don’t think his voice has ever changed throughout the years I’ve seen him either
For my friends and I that went to this show, they stole the show
Lucky, I’ve seen him just once
it's such genius songwriting, how he sings soothingly to the mother but keeps this deep wickedness in his tone to where WE know his motives aren't pure but the mom thinks it's a genuine warning. Then he gets much more aggressive, direct and confrontational with the father, even taunting him and challenging him. Playing on each parent's fears and worries at the same time but in the most effective way per parent.
Great comment!
Classic and well done bad boy metal. I love it 😎💯✊️
This was just a badass song when I was young, and still is! No one like Glen!
Thank you for finally listening to Danzig been waiting so long 🙏🏼 so underrated
This song encapsulates a time when big theatrical songs wasn't always the answer to good music. Danzing showed you could take a simple song (hell the bass player only had 3 notes to play) perform it like it's going to be your only hit and ride the wave. Miss those days.
Such a great record. Twist of Cain will always be my favorite.
YES!! YES!! YES!! FINALLY!!!
Other Danzig songs to check out: "Dirty Black Summer", "Her Black Wings", "Am I Demon", "She Rides", "How the Gods Kill", and "Killer Wolf".
Don't forget "Deth Red Moon". Always loved to do that one live.
dont forget "it's coming down" , "long way back from hell" , and "sistinas" also
BODIES
In an interview with Big Brother magazine, Danzig offered a rare explanation of his lyrics, claiming the inspiration for "Mother" was Tipper Gore, who as a member of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) pushed for regulations on music she felt was harmful to children.
I never knew that. Very cool. Thanks for sharing. 💪😎👍
It all makes sense. Heh.
Lot of folks forget about her. And her VP husband as well.
Facts!
I second this, that song gives me chills every time I listen to it.
Yep, good choice.
"How the Gods Kill" and "She Rides" are definitely worth checking out as well. Also, this album was recorded right after The Cult's "Electric" album by the same producer, Rick Ruben. If you listen to the two albums back to back, you can hear the similarities. Particularly in the sound of the guitars and drums.
she rides is one of their best jams. also noteworthy is possession, and soul on fire from same album
Do you wear the mark is a banger
Don’t forget his mash-up with Shakira. 😂
She rides has a definite Jim Morrison vibe
how the gods kill is my shit!! that one sistinas & godless are my favorite Danzig records but htgk man that song is🔥🔥first time hearing it, i was completely caught off guard by that one part, u know which part i mean😏haha but how it starts off from slow & soft then all of a sudden out of nowhere violence & chaos just kicks in. that was foul how they did that lol but yea good shit man that song still blows me away!! nice one bro! salute.🫡💯
I was at one of the shows the video was shot for this. Glenn is one of my favorite vocalists. It was a blast to watch your first time reactions to this song that's been in my rotation since 1993.
Glenn has always been a master of pairing meaningful (or disturbing) lyrics with super-catchy melodies.
When I was a teenager in the 80s the misfits, samhain, and Danzig were some of my favorite bands. We always said that Glen Danzig sounded like Jim Morrison and Elvis
Im 48 and when I was 15 the local Punk guys use play this song and I was loving it. What a great bunch of guys will always remember those guys and how great they were along with this song.
He is memed to death, but most ppl genuinely like him.
@@nivekian well Rick can be a rather pompous ass so I don't blame Glenn.
@@bernadettewolfgang4505 I get that, and they are very gracious with his own fans. And regardless, he's been put in spots with people who are not his fans, and things don't go well. Plus, too many people because of that, come gunning for him.
I love that you picked up on his jazzy/blues voice immediately.
Danzig's Going down to die is one of my favorite songs ever.
I love this song, we rocked it hard in the 90’s and grew giant sideburns. Mom was not proud…
I love Glenn, he is the VOICE. We call him Evil Elvis for a reason. I listen to his music EVERYDAY. Just something about it, I can't let it go.
Danzig is legendary. “Am I Demon” or “Devil’s Plaything” next!
That's "Am I Demon", mate. "Am I Evil" is Diamondhead.
@@MrShalvayez oops thanks for catching that
I saw them live back in 95. His voice was as good live as it was on the album. You rarely see that.
I saw them open for Metallica back in 94. Don't remember much from that concert anymore, but I do remember Glenn sounding good
I would absolutely LOVE to hear your analysis of John Popper, the lead singer for Blues Traveler.
Glenn Danzig is incredibly important to the history of heavy music. He was a founding member of the Misfits and later Sam Hain.
YES!!! Danzig is so underrated... Been listening to all his stuff since the Misfits.
John Christ, the guitarist, was a blues guitarist. His riffs and Glen vocal were amazing
Top it off with the Chuck Biscuits on the kit and his super high stool he barely sits on.
Best songs to showcase his voice are "Sistinas" and "Anything," both off the bestest ever Danzig album: Danzig III How The Gods Kill.
