It’s so good to hear someone who knows a lot about music point out elements that make U2 such effective communicators. Their music conveys atmospheres and expressions that go beyond just playing something complicated for the sake of it. Their an example of a band working together as a unit to achieve a common goal. I feel their musical style of playing is often in unity and parts being played rarely contradict each other. They embody the power of working together being more effective than individuals fighting for musical dominance. Even with Bono’s showmanship his melodies and lyrics are well considered and work well within the context of their songs.

We use to play this live too..it was the only cover we ever did..classic track great analysis..I never thought of it in terms of emotion but it really is what makes the song stand out...the feel came almost by accident by the sounds of it..most great things do.

I'm not even sure that was in this particular top 100 songs of all time list. Rolling Stone magazine doesn't seem really keen on Queen.

AssortedBits is right unfortunately - Bohemian Rhapsody isn't in there, even though it clearly should be.

Elton John famously said: "If you still haven't found what you're looking for, look behind the drums..."
And look who's on the cover of the single sleeve. Why, if it isn't Larry!

Excellent video, as always. Keep up the good work! I really love RUclipsrs who dive deep into the nitty gritty of what makes a song work the way it does, and it's something that I myself aspire to speak or write about in the future. However, watching your video has prompted me to bring to the table many feelings that I have towards U2, and specifically this album, so I'll do my best to outline them here:
I have long been a critic of "The Joshua Tree", believing that it's not even slightly as good as many people make it out to be, and I feel that this track is symptomatic of the main issue this album suffers from: oversimplification. I'm not saying that simple music is bad by any means, rather I'd often argue the reverse. There's only so much prog I can listen to in one go before I start losing my mind! However, if a song is *too* simple, I find it can often lack that vital spark that makes it stand out above the rest, and thus its repeated listen factor. And for me, this is what happens with this track, and most of the album as a whole.
Coming into this video, I was very intrigued as to what you'd say about the chord progression, which you begin to touch upon at 9:53, and how you would interpret it in a positive light. I already knew that it was essentially 12-bar blues, albeit with a repeated AB section, and I'd always presumed that the song's main appeal came about as a result of the introduction of the C section, specifically that "yearning" sensation that's conjured when we hit the V chord (as you discuss at 11:21).
However, in my opinion, the sense of relief that the listener achieves from hearing that C section is only temporary, and very minimal, seeing as the blues chord structure is incredibly well-known and, one could argue, overused. Therefore, the song doesn't throw its own original little intricacy into the mix, rather it's a mere reinterpretation of a preexisting and highly familiar hook. So much so that if we rewind to what you said between 11:07 and 11:21 about the song, or more specifically, the AB section being "imprisoned in its structure" and "wanting to break out", I personally would apply that description to the ENTIRE song, including the C section, due to the sheer temporariness and un-originality of that sense of relief, or yearning sensation, that it brings.
This would explain why I've often criticised the songs on this album for sounding "unfinished" or "under-cooked". Seeing as that transition into the C section is so minimal, and thus not sufficient to allow the song to stand on its own two feet, it needs something else, i.e. a proper, original chorus section, to come in afterwards. In other words, if the ABABC structure that makes up the entirety of the song as we know it were in fact merely the verses, and the band were to go away and write a fully-fledged chorus to follow them up with, I'd have a much greater appreciation of the song as a whole, and it would no longer sound unfinished to me. That's the problem. It's just a conveyor belt of verses going round and round, with no chorus to spring in and sweep me off my feet.
I'd love to hear what your thoughts are on my comment, and I look forward to watching the remainder of your series. :)

came back to this video just to listen to you talk about this song haha - i think something U2 does really well is a sort of anthemic yearning. a hopeful longing. and this song is a prime example of that

A lot of the guitar and instrument stuff is over my head. But it's helping me understand how other people who are more musicians and not vocalists can write songs using an instrument. For me, primarily a vocalist and tin whistle player, my starting point is almost always melody + lyrics, and it's hard to fathom writing a song another way.

One thing though - it’s actually in Db/C#, not D, which is a relatively “strange” key with a Neapolitan or Phrygian relation to C; I think it feels a lot more ethereal as a result partially of this.

I feel like you could spend less time on in-depth description of the music e.g. 9:20 to improve pacing. Instead of a description you could say: this "MIDI music sound" changes to this "again MIDI". may also help non musicians to grasp and feel the difference
