Such a powerful message in this song. Knowing this song was released in 1995 and that we face the same issues today. Hope we can save the world... we can only try and care for it, like it has cared for us over the years. I agree with Sams interpretation, too. MJ was a unique artist and is very much missed.

Truly The Greatest Music Artist To Ever Live & The Greatest Humanitarian Ever!!!! Who got ridicule/dehumanized and misunderstood all cause his love for children & the planet etc.😭👑🌎💞✨(And what makes this Short Film/Music Video even more of a masterpiece is that it was actually filmed on four different continents, South America (Amazon Rainforest), Africa (Tanzania), Europe (Croaatia) and North America (New York) Also MJ wrote this song in his hotel room while he was on his BAD World Tour in Vienna 1988 and it was later released in 1995 on his album “HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I” Earth Song - Michael explained: "I remember writing 'Earth Song' when I was in Austria, in a hotel. And I was feeling so much pain and so much suffering of the plight of the Planet Earth. And for me, this is Earth's Song, because I think nature is trying so hard to compensate for man's mismanagement of the Earth. And with the ecological unbalance going on, and a lot of the problems in the environment, I think earth feels the pain, and she has wounds, and it's about some of the joys of the planet as well. But this is my chance to pretty much let people hear the voice of the planet. And this is 'Earth Song.' And that's what inspired it. And it just suddenly dropped into my lap when I was on tour in Austria."~ Michael Jackson And speaking on the meaning of the song “Earth Song” ~ Is addressing us, humanity and society in general. Concerning the fact of what we have done to the earth, all the forests are being destroyed and the bond/relationship we had with the animals is not the same as it used to be. In the other hand, as a cause of man's mismanagement of earth mother nature is trying to compensate. However, because of the ecological unbalance and environmental problems earth is dying. The main goal Michael Jackson wanted was to give the message to people, for “people to hear the voice of the planet” and encourage the people to do something about it. Also the song becomes spiritual towards the ending, where Michael calls on people to remember the earth is their inheritance from God via their ancestor Abraham. Meanwhile, MJ sings "What about death again" reminding listeners to think about their eternal death, asking people to check their heart for repentance, or to see if they really ever cared.)

MJ is called the King of Pop but he didn't proclaim that for himself. Him and Janet have songs that range from pop to rock to r&B. Janet even has 1 or 2 that I would classify as folk. For more rock-oriented MJ try "give in to me", "Dirty Diana", "Black or White" and "Come together". MJ has a song called "Morphine" that could totally be a Nine Inch Nails song. I liked hearing what you guys got from the song. All of it is valid with layers to reflect on. Essentially, Earth Song is Michael speaking to God. It is a prayer. As the people bend their knees and touch the earth and feel the pain its gone through, it becomes the people praying, believing and seeking to resuscitate the earth and give it life again. And as Michael continues to sing, God is listening and begins to answer the prayer by healing the world. It speaks to what God wants, which is our faith in Him and our concern for the world and others as caretakers of the planet and each other. It speaks to how God can change our lives when we come to Him in prayer. It speaks to the world at large, what we've done to it and how we need to change. It's easily one of his greatest anthems and it's often wildly overlooked because it's an epic power ballad and wasn't really out there in the mainstream like Man in the Mirror or Heal The World.
