Today is almost 3 years after your fine review and the 'SZCO Supplies Wood Lock Back Folding Knife' is selling for $7.13 with Amazon Prime. Your review sold me. Great job, Thrifty. Thanks! Joe
Honestly I hate to say it, but as much as I love traditional knives to be made where they have history like the US, Sheffield England, Soligen Germany, ect. Quality in a tool should always come first. So if China makes better stuff at a much more reasonable price and Case doesn't get their Quality Control together, then I'll be buying historical pattern knives made in China
I meant to ask you I watched your video on budget blades and pieces you can pick up for 16 bucks on Amazon I was wondering if you ever heard of KLAAS knives there fantastic I’m going to be shooting a video on some of mine I think you’ll enjoy seeing them thanks so much
Great video! I just found out about your channel through a common viewer, Stuart Gross. On my channel I review mostly slip joint knives and I started a list of other like minded channels and put it in my description boxes. I just started doing that around 4 videos ago and I added your channel to the list, it will appear in the next video that I put out. I also subbed while I was here. I am glad that I found out about your channel, I am really enjoying it!
I never think to look on Amazon for traditionals. When I checked, their prices on Rough Ryders were outrageous, so I don’t even look there. This is a great idea for a video - I’m always looking for a knife fix, but you have to buy several in order to spread out the shipping cost, and there goes $60 and the knives are great…but they come all at once and then nothing… you know exactly how it goes. Lol. There should be a subscription service that pulls a knife a week from your wishlist. That would be cool. I have the large stockman in the Marbles Game Getter series, nice knife. I don’t like the feel of the plastic scales, tho. Good video!
I need both. I need a small trickle coming in slowly and those mother-lodes too. I thought of having my large orders shipped to my wife's work and having her bring home one each day. The thought of them just sitting there over a weekend quickly dispelled with the idea. It's a sickness.
Nice budget knives. I need to use Amazon for knives more often. The red version of the RR upswept Trapper has a stronger pull on it. Many people complained that the black version had too weak of a pull. They fixed that with the red version.
Just ordered two of the Cheyenne series stockmans. Can't wait for them to come in. Not gonna lie, the mission statement you outlined at the beginning of this video did kind of help me make my mind up on them. Quality at a reasonable price for the regular guy is a big deal.
It's in my pocket. I lubed the joint, treated the blades and fed the handle some orange oil. The action is terrific. Hope you got a nice example like I did.
@@stuartgross5728 Howard Feed-N-Wax is what I use. Just takes a wee bit on the wood only. Apply with a Q-Tip, let it sit a hour, and then wipe off the excess.

Perfect video! This is the kind of content I can really get into. GEC Knives look great, but even if you could afford them you can’t find them. If you happen to find them, you’re too scared to use them and so they become shelf queens. For the average Joe, these knives under 20 bucks are perfect. there are so many options. You’ve just opened my eyes to a few more. Thank you
Oh, I would add Opinel (they’re at least under $20). If you expand the ceiling to $20, you open the door to Roper knives, which I’ve enjoyed more than my Rough Ryders. The sand and ash viper stockman knives are comparable to Case in fit and finish I picked up a Hen and Rooster Saltwater abalone trapper (by Frost) for about $15. It was mystery steel, but the abalone was top notch and the blades were well ground -I was really impressed. Buck also has a Chinese line that uses 420J2 steel. I had the canoe for a while: nice, slim profile; great bone covers; silky smooth walk and talk. It wasn’t an outstanding edge holder, but it sharpened up like a straight razor. Very well built. You can pick them up at Walmart -plus you get Buck’s lifetime guarantee. My favorite Rough Ryder is the Classic Carbon utility knife (aka sodbuster). T-10 steel outperforms the CV, which has about 1/3 less carbon. The linerlock is hefty brass construction. I initially disliked the thin handle as it feels less substantial than a Case Sodbuster. However, being so thin it makes for a comfortable pocket carry. Last, but not least, that Queen 010 Wharncliffe knife produced by SMKW was outstanding. At four or more times cheaper than a Case Swayback, and just as classy, the appeal was instant for me. I use it for cutting 8oz leather and it holds an edge.
Great idea for a video. I have a few of these knives and they are good value. If I am working around the farm and doing hay, I take a knife like these, rather than lose a more expensive knife. Of the RR knives I own I can't complain about finish or quality, I just wish they wouldn't get so hog wild with all the stripes, shields and other gimcrackery.
I've got a few of those on my edc and related wish list on Amazon already. I think I'm gonna go looking for the moose though. I have a GEC Bull Moose. I don't remember their pattern number maybe 81? Idk but it's one of my favorite and it's a pattern I don't see much of at all. It's always barlows or canoes of which I'm not really the biggest fans. Trappers too, they're just ok if you ask me. Ok enough that I'll buy them but I'll take a stockman over it.
Checking these in summer 2023 it looks like they've all gone up 2-3 bucks. Inflation. :/ Great video though, I have a bunch of flippers and OTFs so getting back into the traditionals.
The Rough Rider and Marbles stuff is pretty good quality Chinese manufactured stuff and I personally own probably 14 Rough Riders and a few Marbles knives . Out of the 14 Rough Riders I have purchased , one was returned to the seller due to a defect that should have never left the factory . The Rite Edge stuff on the other hand are all Pakistani products AFAIK , and I'll pass on those . Frost cutlery had a lot of their stuff made in Pakistan and is easily subpar to their Steel Warrior line that is made in China .
The Rite Edge knives I selected for the Top 20 were all made in China. There is a percentage of all budget knifes that are lemons. It is a roll of the dice. The RR Jumbo Stockman in the recent review I did was one. It was since replaced for one that works fine. I have two Frost Whitetail knives one from Pakistan and one from China. The one from Pakistan is pretty bad.
@Chad Damron I’ve only got 5 Steel Warriors . I’ve got 14 Rough Riders . There’s a reason for that . Actually a few reasons . I’ll buy Rough Riders again . I can’t say the same thing about Steel Warriors . The action and snap on SW isn’t that great and some are downright gritty feeling . It’s taken a lot of cleaning , oiling and working the action to try to get them to smooth out . Fit and finish is better on the RR . The action and snap is far better . I’ve returned 1 RR out of the 15 that I’ve purchased that slipped through QC . But overall the RR is a better product for slightly less money . Every one of them have come razor sharp out of the box and the fit and finish rivals that of Case knives . Rough Riders are great bang for the buck .
LOL! My GI "Summer Camp" knife, like yours was a complete B**ch to open. Dousing it in 3in1 and fiddling with it while watching a few of your reviews and now it's just lovely! I remember my dad taking me to a big store back in the 60's to get a real one then shipping me off to summer camp along with a small metal flashlight that died (like every 1960s flashlight!) the very 1st night. I'm fairly certain the knife was stolen by one of the Big Kids within the week...

The Marbles GI utility is based on the old nonmetalic Demo knife. Used when make charges with C4 hence the non metalic. You didnt want a knife that could possibly cause a spark or static charge.
that makes zero sense as c4 is completely insensitive to sparks or electricity and requires a primary explosive (the detonator/blasting cap) to go off.
Having heard good things about Rough Rider knives, I bought a medium sized lockback knife. The knife looked and felt good. Fit and finish was surprisingly good, and the blade held an edge well. I was happy with it, and that was my EDC most regularly. After about 8 months of light duty, the lock spring broke, rendering the knife useless. I thought then about the old adage, “you get what you pay for.”
