When I buy a expensive knife ( admittedly I do this less frequently , as I grow older ) I expect to get what I pay for ( quality , fit , finish and so on ). When I find a inexpensive ( dare I say cheap.... ) knife that meets my needs , offers quality and value , there is a certain satisfaction that is lacking in the more expensive purchase . Great review.👍
I agree 100%. I mostly collect cheap, and cheaper. And I find myself really loving any knife that is good far above its price point, regardless of what that price was .
That blue RR VG10 stockman is a great knife. I gift that to younger friends who have never carried a pocket knife before. It doesn't look all "grandpa", it doesn't feel big in the pocket, and holds an edge a very long time. The Old Timer Heritage series is great too. I would add the Buck 375 which is a great little two blade knife that is perfect for the watch pocket in your jeans. $11 and change at Walmart.
Good point about that RR being a good introductory knife for young adults. It looks cool and has different blade shapes to explore. What's not to like?
Great video. Agree with all your pics. I would expand on that and add any knife from rough ryder carbon II black macarta handle slip joints from rough ryder. I really enjoy that series also.
I've been massively impressed with the quality of RR knives and have only heard good things about the other models too. TK got me hooked after his Sowbelly Stockman collection video.
Those are all great choices. Loving my stagbone halfhalk. The queens are amazing walk and talk and more for the money, just gotta stockman. Thanks for sharing. Great video!
All good!!! I like the Marbles Copperheads and their GI knife, wanted one since I was a kid (they were Camillus then?) but never got around to it. Slightly kicking myself there because you could get them in surplus stores, the American made ones for years for very little money along with German Army knives and British Army clasp knives.
TKJohn, great video topic, as there is an actual, "virtual" plethora of value-priced pocket knives out there, so it's good to get a collector's perspective to help sort through the herd. Thanks.
Great picks it’s pretty hard to think about 14-16 price point for some of those knives…… I’ve put a couple of them through the paces to see how they would hold up for that price point…….. 440A holds up and I’ll bet you I can get that stuff so sharp your mom would even be impressed 😮love ya Johnny!!!
At that price it's worth taking a chance on some of these. In your experience do you find 440 doesn't hold an edge that well, or is that just when it's compared to other steels out there?
Rough rider has some really good knives for the price point, especially if you like the more old school bone handle “grandpa knives” Opinel is also a fantastic option for an old school feel (though in pretty sure they’re not technically a slip joint
Excelllent choices Thrifty!! I also have experience with the Cinnamon Bone Stag choices, the marble D2 stockman and the Queens sawcut. I like the Queen Sawcut Stockman too. I bought the Cinnamon Bone Stag Half Hawk for his graduation. He commented on my slip joint at Christmas, So I thought I would get him started with a decent pocket knife when he graduates. The D2 mables stockman was a choice, the Queen sawcut stockman, the Carbon Classic II half hawk, Capital Intern, the Senator and the upcoming Black Appaloosa Easy Open........... Too Many knives, not enough nephews!! 😂😂😂😂
Recently started carrying a special gift Swiss Army knife. The blade stays wicked sharp with only infrequent dressing on a carbide sharpener meant for garden pruners. It is the fisherman model, so it has clippers and a true Phillips screwdriver instead of corkscrew.
Great video. These are just about all on my wish list. The half hawk was supposed to be delivered yesterday. I love my Apta and the fit in finish on my barlow is amazing for the price.
@@ThriftyKaniffy, Hadn't subscribed, but your mention of that simply reminded me to do this buddy! Looking forward to more and have been checkin some past posts! Good luck to you!
Case and Bear and Son are knives made in the USA they have great selections around $40 I try to buy USA products China makes cheep stuff and it most of the time is not good quality.
Imho, you can't go far wrong with a Rough Ryder knife, on the other hand, Case leave a lot to be desired. I wouldn't hesitate to order a RR that I liked the look of,, but I'll never order another Case knife, I've been disappointed too many times..
I have a Case on special order and I'm a little worried now. Especially at the price of it. I'll have to check it over carefully. Is there anything I should be looking out for?
@@SussexEDC Just general things like fit and finish, centering, gaps around springs and scales, etc etc, I returned for a full refund, a bone handled sodbuster recently, which looked like my dream edc knife, but it was very poorly made,, not in the same league as most rough ryders, and four times the price,, !!,, really hope you get a good one,, 👍🤞🤞. Cheers..
Love Rough Riders. I have given many away to kids. I carry a yellow lock back when I need a knife. I’m not a fan of USA brands like Queen and Old Timer that are made across the Pacific. To me they are just posers. With a RR it is what it says it is and if I bust one up, I go get another one. Hard to replace a Case or Schrade-Walden of which I have MANY.
Never trust a Rough Rider that is supposed to have carbon steel blades. Some do and some do not. Those that do use a very, very cheap carbon steel that is nearly useless if you actually use the knife for anything serious. But several I've tested were stainless steel, not carbon steel. Rough Rider makes some very, very good knives, but they have three tiers of quality, and of quality control.
There were some knives that were intended to be carbon that did end up being made with stainless, but was more a mistake of production/ marketing communication than some intentional deception. Rough Ryders can be hit and miss, but to say their carbon steel is bad is too broad a statement in my opinion. I've used it and found it to be similar to carbon blades from other brands.
Nice selection there TK.
Must admit I am very impressed with the Queen Sawcut Bone Canoe, it certainly punches above its price-point!
You and me both, I'm amazed at what I paid everytime I pick one up.

Good point about that RR being a good introductory knife for young adults. It looks cool and has different blade shapes to explore. What's not to like?

Good list! I have many of them, but not all. Might have to remedy that.
I think a good number of my regular viewers have at least one of these. They're just too darn good not to own. Thanks, Su.
Great video and thanks for sharing! Some very nice options. The Queen sawcut bone canoe and Barlow are really a huge cut above for the price!
I dunno how they made these so good for the price. Thanks, Doc.
I've been considering these for a while now. Those Sawcut handles look really good.
Those are all great choices. Loving my stagbone halfhalk. The queens are amazing walk and talk and more for the money, just gotta stockman. Thanks for sharing. Great video!

Those are great knives for under $20…great for anyone, especially a new knife person

Lol, sometimes a collection just screams for certain knives, even if you're not one hundred percent sure.
