The backhand Stella attempts that Stolas catches. The fact he caught it without issue, to me, implies that he's used to her hitting him, and that makes the whole situation with Stolas telling her to leave his house and life so much more cathartic

actully we've seen evidence of her being abusive way back in episode two
she was physically throwing stuff at him becaus she was pissed he slept with an imp in their house again. Which yeah could be explained by her momentary rage, but it does suggest her anger issues as well as her being phyiscally abusive to him.

To me it's always been a sign of a cold truth; Stella is violent and obsessed with prestige and politicking because she's WEAK and she knows it. Maybe she's above the common rabble of Hell what with her being a Goetia, but she's WEAKER than Stolas because he didn't show any fear at her striking him and caught her hand effortlessly, and Stolas himself is fairly weak, what with him only being a Prince of Hell and a mage like his father Paimon, which is why she threatens Stolas using her brother Andrealphus and by hiring Striker to go after him; she can't hurt Stolas herself, physically, emotionally, financially or politically, so she has to resort to having others attack Stolas on her behalf.

Its like those people didnt read into the attempted confessions of Stolas during Episode 2 of season 1. Saying things like "She was always-" and "We were never in-"; it gives a big impression for us to fill in the blanks that things weren't as cut and dry as 'oh she's just being stuff-throwy violent-loud bc he cheated, so she's in the right.'

Stella'S actually been getting off on abusing him since forever!" "Oh, Stolas has loved Bltizo since he was a kid, ain't that sweet?"

@@undertakernumberone1 I do not agree with that. Stolas still has complicated feelings regarding his relationship with Stella. Regardless of what Stella was actually like, in Loo Loo Land we did learn that Stolas was not happy in his current relationship, which is why he was pursuing Blitzo. Stella turning out to be an absusive bitch doesn't inherently change that scene because for Stolas, that struggle for words was more about trying to explain his relationship with Stella without putting any burdens on his daughter. It still remains complex, regardless of what Stella was like... If Stella was a much nicer person it would have made his feelings regarding the relationship with Blitzo more complicated, that i would agree with, but it would not have inherentley changed anything regarding the scene we got in Loo Loo Land, as that scene already made it clear that he did not love Stella. His relationship with Stella mostly revolved around his position as a member of the Ars Goetia and then later on to give Octavia a (in his mind) normal childhood, in spite of how cruel Stella was to him. I think that is plenty complex, he let himself be a victim, not speaking up for himself because he loved his daughter too much. It is a different angle, but it is still very complex if you ask me.

@@bouboulroz THere is a difference between "I love tormenting you!" (and this episode implies it being from day 1, basically) and her being at a point of utterly excessive, irrational overreaction (which, at that point, in my least liked episode, could'Ve actually been more of an attempt at intimidation to get him to behave more appropriate to his position. Stolas was, as you point out, right in front of her and didn't care) to what Stolas had been doing.
Loo Loo Land: "You need to understand... your mother and I... I just-... I felt-... She's always been... I haven't been- Ha-... We weren't in... I'm sorry, I- I- I don't have the words."

Them not having a good relationship would've been fine for me. Them not being in love would've been fine for me. Stolas craving love and then not caring, or rather noticing, how this will reflect on his family, maybe still hurt Stella despite them not loving each other, and Stella ending up utterly overreacting, I just htink would have made for a more interesting, more complex plot.

28:15 you’ve gotta feel for Stolas when you get to this point. Yes, it was fucked up that he cheated on Stella with Blitzø. But Stella was never in love with Stolas, and she talked bad about him for years.
Keep in mind too, the first flashback happened when Blitzø and Stolas were only 10. If we’re right to assume Stolas is about 35 now, then he was forced into an arranged marriage with Stella right at 18, and forced to become a parent immediately then too, for Octavia to now be 17.
I forget if we were told otherwise what Stolas’s age is, but the way I look at it, assuming it is 35, he never got to discover who he was or whom he liked. He was engaged to Stella when they were still kids, and never got to grow up with Blitzø, or anyone else for that matter. He’s been miserable for nearly 3 decades, nearly 2 with Stella, and she’s made it more than clear she only cared about the prospect of money to be with him. But the reason he stuck around and endured that treatment was just for Octavia to have some semblance of a normal life.
And then you go back to S1E2 at Loo-Loo Land, and see why Stolas couldn’t give Octavia a straightforward answer. How do you tell your kid, “I was forced into a relationship with your mom, we were never in love and we resent each other,”? He tried to say, “We weren’t in LOVE,” but was only able to get out the first 3 words. He’s been fighting a battle to deal with Stella, and sacrificed much of the happiness he wanted, for his daughter’s own happiness.

A lot of people thought based on season 1 that Stolas was more to blame in his marriage falling apart and his wife's hatred was more justified and potentially sympathetic of a character. Also that Ozzie was calling out how his relationship with Blitz was initially born out of purely self destructive lust even if he wants more now. The idea that these are likable and sympathetic characters but ones who ultimately are bad people who literally are in hell.
But no, with this it is clarified that Stolas has always had pure love for Blitz that the imp in question has just been blinding himself to, Stella is just a villain who never had any affection for Stolas or cared about their family, and the despite the adultery Stolas is entirely the victim of this situation. so some pople think this episode is a start of a decline, apparently they feel like this episode retcons stolas as a charactr and his relationships and think its bad. Personally, i disagree and will break down why i think that:
-Stolas himself: people say Stolas got soften too much by this point, made out to be too good despite how he acted in earlier episodes and in general due to his status as demonic nobility. Peersonally, I ain't too bthered, Episode two already established that whiilehe can be flippant and classist somewhat he's not a terrible person and didn't do anything to dissuade the idea he's probably the more likableof hell's elite. And anything to suggest otherwise is in the pilot (which is questionably canon now) and episode 1 (where he was maing a deal with blitzo during a fight, which could be exaplined as both early installment weirdness and him not thinking blitzo was in trouble, not to mention the deal was actually in Blitzo's favour as he would get tohold the grimoire the majority of the time
-Blitzo: some don't lie the childhood friend angle, but eprsonally i don't rea dit that way. STOLAS sees blitzo as a childhood friend, but Blitzo just saw Stolas as some random rich kid he stole from, he ever saw him as a friend despite that wholesome bonding scene. Plus it establishes how Blitzo knew about the book in the first place, as a lowly imp wouldnt have known about it just out of nowhere.
-STELLA: a BIG thing people dislike about this is how it turns Stella in an abusive asshole and removes any guilt from Stolas with his infedelity, as well as makes stella jsut a one dimensional jerk. Personally, I think the story set up well in advance Stella being a cunt (between her shouting at Stolas and throwing stuff at him for 'sleeping with an imp' and it being implied she's more mad about how its affecting his image and not the fact he cheated on her, as well as stolas saying to Octavia "your mother has always...she and I have never..." which can now be seen as both him not being able to find the words but also beg unable to tell octavia how horrible her mother is) and while Stolas being vindicated in his cheaitng does take complexity from it I thin its fine enough and doesn't contradict anything. Also if Stella was meant to be sympathetic they wouldn't have shown her hiring a HITMAN to murder her ex-husband.
I do agree the characters MAY have been changed over time, I jsut dont thin it started HERE and it certianly dosn't contradict earlieer characterisation and events, which is what a bad retcon wuld do. I also can't say DEFINITVELY if this was a retcon or not, I'm not one of the writers or staff i wouldn'tknow, I merely agree its POSSIBLE.

It baffles me how people said this "ruined" Stella when we literally knew next to nothing about her before this episode. All we knew definitively was that she and Stolas were married and she's Octavia's mother. She never sounds hurt about Stolas cheating on her, which adds weight to Stolas claiming they both know that she wasn't 'hurt" by his adultery, because she wasn't.

@@KeeperOfUntoldDreamsI think the problem is that it "ruined" people's *ideas* for her character. There was a really interesting angle to explore here if she wasn't actually all that bad and was genuinely upset about Stolas's infidelity. Instead she's just a rather one dimensional abusive bitch. Not that that's inherently a bad thing for a character, just some people felt like there could have been more to her.

A fan fact that not many people notice. When Blitz was brought to Stolas, he immediately took him to his bedroom. Pretty illogical behavior, but if you think about it, most likely lonely Stolas was reading a lot and at some point the usual books ran out and he had to switch to erotic novels, and a lover who sneaks into the bedroom under the cover of night is one of the popular tropes in such novels.

Stolas' father in this, Paimon, is one of the 9 Kings of Hell in the Ars Goetia, Since Asmodeus (or Ashmoday) is also one of these kings, it's likely that Viv isn't totally following the Ars Goetia in this context... But it does suggest Paimon is one of the upper echelons of Hell's nobility. Still, it's clear that he is an immensely powerful Demon Lord , which serves to help contextualise where Stolas sits in that hierarchy.
If the Goetia Demons are mostly accurate to the Ars Goetia, that means Stolas would be only 2 places removed from the likes of Asmodeus, Satan, Mammon, Beelzebub, Leviathan, and Belphegor.
In the Ars Goetia proper, Prince Stolas is a subordinate to King Paimon, though it doesn't really detail any sort of familial relationship. Paimon is also consistently described across various Demonology literature as a man of noble bearing riding a Dromedary (single humped Camel) and accompanied by a minstrel who plays loud music. So, nothing like Stolas, or this version of Paimon.

I think the idea is that Paimon is also supposedly a shapeshifter. He's kind of a formless blob when we first see him but as Stolas gets closer he takes a form that resembles Stolas (and Stolas is relatively accurately portrayed in terms of visuals, being a long legged owl) and was probably the form he was in when Stolas was conceived.

Maybe be a hot take but actually dislike this episode personally
Not big on the two knowing each other as kids as a general trope for this relationship. It also demystifies Stola's a bit, I guess I just had the impression of him being ancient, which would influence further the power dynamic of he and blitz.
I also just find Stella always have been being a bitch kinda... lazy? Idk, obviously she didn't have to be good or anything, but I feel like it was written to absolve Stolas for cheating and basically fucking up his relationships.
The appeal for me in the Blitz Stolas relationship was that they two flawed adults entering into a toxic relationship based on selfish personal gains (at the start), but the whole childhood thing and the Stella have always been crazy kinda takes the complex nuances of what was a really interesting relationship.
That being said that bit in the bed's so fuckin funny. Stolas is a mood

@09:45 I'm of the mind that wages should be indexed to inflation automatically. Base salaries on a basket of goods and update every year based on market availability and prices. Rent rises by 30% so do wages to keep the system more balanced. If prices get artificially distorted for exploitation then invest in competition. Have a mixed eccon where people are assured the basics through collective efforts, but can compete in the market with luxuries that exceed the basics.

I have to admit, and I know many will disagree on this, but... next to Moxabuse the Episode (Harvest Moon Festival)... this is my LEAST liked Episode. Probably the same reason why many like it! For me, it doesn't do anything for the characters! It feels like it is there to service the Stolitz fans more than anything else. Sure, this episode is great DRAMA, but to me, it has little substance.
"Oh look! Stolas has been in love with Blitzo ever since he was a child! So cute!!!!" "Oh look! Stella is just an evil bitch with no character depth to her!!! STOLITZ!!!" "LOOK! BLITZO'S DAD HAS BEEN SO HORRIBLE TO HIM!"
First of all... even after Blitzo's dad let slip how little he values his son, he still could've made more money out of that than just handing him out for free... For me, it really overindulged that. Also, with a later episode (which, togehter with another one in this season, also is annoying due to how Moxxie's being portrayed), it feels like somebody really has daddy issues...
For Stolas... Honestly? I think the reveal "He's loved Blitzo since ever!" Kinda... cheapens it. Or, if not, makes it feel less interesting. It feels like "Puppy love for the sake of it." Also, i think "Gay man in horrible marriage" is a bit of an overused trope. Now, i don't think it's been confirmed yet that Stolas is homosexual, but I just think they could've gone with a different sexuality. Maybe Demisexuality (meaning he needs an emotional connection, which he just never created with Stella. Say, he caught Blitzo stealing the book and decided to make a transaction for mutual gain which then developed in him developing an attaction to him)
ANd, last but not least, Stella... the whole "I love tormenting you!" and such feel like it's there to give Stolitz a (imho unnecessary, due to how she overreacts) moral high ground. "Look! She's been evil all along!!! STOLITZ IS JUSTIFIED!!!" basically. Which, for me, just doesn't mesh with Loo Loo Land. Especially considering how it seems to be something she does iN PUBLIC! When talking to Octavia, Stolas is conflicted, he knows that he's also done wrong! He is tempted to throw Stella under the bus, but doesn't, knowing that it's not just her fault. Then, this episode comes along and reveals: "Nah, Stella has been an abusive monster to him forever!" (which, to me, feels like it was somethignt ey've come up after EPisode 2 of Season 1, as i said, maybe to cater to Stolitz fans). And again, in public. SO, for me, it feels like the scene in Loo LOo Land has been retroactively cheapened by removing that and, basically, telling us: "Stolas should've just told Octavia that he never loved her mother, that her mother has been abusing him for years because she gets off on that, and that she should know it because she isn't even trying to hdie it!"
For me, this episode throws away a lot of potential of very interesting complexity for Stella and Stolas. An Example: Maybe Stella could've become as abusive to Stolas because she felt that the other noble families were seeing them as weak, as jokes and, potentially, easy pickings. Maybe demon politics are extremely cut-throat. So maybe it was either trowing Stolas under the bus, or risk being considered weak, easy pickings whos holdings should belong to a stronger, more worthy family, which could've had... nasty implications for herself, Stolas and, especially, Octavia!

@@rosenrot234 I mean, Stolas still hurt Octavia. Who, apparently, was completely oblivious to how bad Stella's behavior was despite her, apparently, doing it in, more or less, public.
Honestly, I wouldn't have needed Stolas to have loved Stella. I just think that Stolas craving love and then not caring, or rather noticing, how this will reflect on his family, maybe still hurt Stella (even if she doesn't lvoe him and knows he doesn't love her, being ignored for what's for her a dirty peasant could still sting) despite them not loving each other, and Stella ending up utterly overreacting, I just htink would have made for a more interesting, more complex plot.
Also, correction: She is really annoyed that he's sleeping with an imp. I quote. "A MOTEL?! LIKE A FUCKING PLEBEAN?!" The bed was an additional factor, but the worst point is that he's sleeping with an imp. Which could have played into my previous suggestion about demon politics.

@@rosenrot234 personally that's part of why I think her writing was lazy and ends up by extension making Stolas and bltz's relationship less interesting.
It felt like someone on the team felt like Stolas needed to be justified morally for cheating instead of it being something natural like whatever he felt at the time realistically drifting away, leaving Stella to be vengeful. Or anything else really; I don't really even care for Stella but I recognize a wasted opportunity
