  • Fall is a short season in Alaska, nonetheless crisp days fill the air and vibrant leaves create a colorful landscape. With freezing temperatures the growing season comes to a halt and we embrace the wood stove for the beauty and warmth it provides.
We clean up the yard, protect the fruit trees with vole guards and prepare the beehives for the upcoming winter with candy boards, quilt boxes, and extra insulation. We end the night with a lovely harvest of brussel sprouts for a fresh meal at the cabin.

I just wanted to let you two know that I think it's really cool that you include the sunrise/sunset and temps for the day in your videos. It's interesting to see the difference from your place and where I am in Michigan.

A make shift roof for your hives will help a ton! I have a very similar set up, and always struggled with winter survival until recently. I also insulate in teh same way. Also, I took a piece of sheet metal that I can tie down over my two hives, at a slant so water flows off and away from the hives, and i haven't had any issues with moisture since. Highly recommend it.

My Favorite way to prepare Brussel sprouts is to half them into a cast iron pan, season with ground black pepper, Kosher salt, Garlic powder and olive oil. Roast in oven until there is a char on most leaves. They are awesome!

Great video! One real easy trick to help with the condensation! Raise the rear of the hive a little (3/4-1”). Then what condensation, if any, that does form on the top of the inside covers will run to the front, down and out of the entrance or through the screen bottom board. It won’t be dripping down on the cluster which is a death sentence in the winter no matter where you’re at. Good luck with it and keep up the great work!

You picked a good day to burn. Even the ashes add something to the soil. I sure hope your bees do well this winter - it is always so nice to see them in spring. I was so excited to see how well your brussels sprouts did! And your supper had me drooling of course. Love you two and really appreciate that you share your lives with us.

You guys have evolved into a cooking show, which is just amazing. I’d love to be your next door neighbor, and come to dinner. It’s truly amazing. I am wondering if either of you have any culinary training, or organic training. So, that is the second question for your Q and A that I have proposed. (The first, if you have been inundated and have forgotten is about Eric’s side arms. Why he wears a semi in some situations, and a revolver in others. I hope you can answer in the winter when things might be slower. I’d very much like to know the answers to both. Great! Love your work and dedication, so much. - Liam

Never did I think in the Alaskan winter there would be little mice awake and a threat to your tree's and bees. I thought everything hibernated in winter. @
