  • In the Last Frontier our short growing season requires months of preparation, from starting seeds indoors to cultivating healthy soil to nourish the plants. We plant an entire row of tomatoes in the high tunnel and carry out necessary tasks to ensure we have a successful garden.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

Whenever I watch your videos, I think about all those years I wasted being ashamed and hateful of my life ,how I didnt really live, I was always in constant fear of running into someone I knew( because of a certain image I had portrayed) . I think about how I could have been happier and enjoyed those life experiences, now I know I'll never have those moments back.🌿
The day I came across one of your videos was the day i made a decision to be happy, to be free and to enjoy every moment that I am blessed with, that was when I also decided to share my story, the life I once hid from the world as to step toward self acceptance. 🌱
You helped me make that decision, you made me appreciate a rural life I once hated.
Please don't ever stop making videos , you are an inspiration to so many people and the world is blessed simply because you both are in it. 🌈
    P. S :To anyone reading this, enjoy every moment that you get to witness because you may never have them back and never be afraid of truly being yourself, who cares what anyone else thinks or says. 💚☀️

Just a little note for you as far as tomatoes are concerned, when I have drab tasting toms, I will add some baking soda to the soil to lower the pH level in the soil, makes the tomatoes sweeter. Also letting the roots run deeper by holding back on the water, the toms go into a water saving mode and thus making the tomatoes conserve the sugars. Harvest before watering, and the tomatoes will have a much better taste.

We had rhubarb in our small garden when I was growing up, we used to go out and pick a stalk and eat it if we were hungry when playing outside. Our strain was really durable and overwintered for 15 years or so until we sold the place. At the end of the year we used to go to the Berry U-Pick and then Mom would make strawberry-rhubarb pie. The combination was amazing. Something I think you should do. You can actually use any sweet berry to offset the sourness of the raw rhubarb.

    1 tsp cinnamon

Old trick is putting a dead fish under your tomato plants. Can confirm it works really well here in new england. Keep a head or tail after each trip in the freezer and add them a little deeper below the plants as you plant them. Try it with a pike head under one plant for fun.

I grew up loving rhubarb because of my grandmother. She made rhubarb jam with "orange slices" candy mixed in. Orange slices are an orange flavored gum-drop candy in the shape of an orange slice and sugar coated. She cut them into 1/2" chunks and mixed them into the rhubarb jam just before pouring it into the canning jars. It added sweet to the tartness of the rhubarb. Another favorite was strawberry rhubarb pie. Again, it mixed tartness with sweet. I hope yours grows well.

Lovage tastes like floral celery. It’s a short lived perennial. Plant new ones every year, just in case. Once you use it, you’ll love it. Is amazing in chicken broth for soups. If you get too many overwintering , the shoots are edible as an asparagus replacement

Yes, your rhubarb will be super happy with all the amendments. It really does well for me here in VT, zone 4, often -20 or so. I don't mulch mine, the snow is a wonderful insulator actually. I throw a couple shovels of compost on it in the spring when it first pokes up (often through frozen soil!) and it's off and running. I love it, it's sour, and does well with other fruit like strawberries, apples, and cherries. Last summer, I made a bunch of cherry-rhubarb compote and poured it over yogurt and ice-cream..YUM!! I'm thinking you're going to love it, with your kitchen creativity! I love your garden SOOO much, it's completely inspiring me to think outside the box. Thank you, guys!

Then put the leaves in jars to use all winter for my greens. The seeds are great and can be used for preserving like celery seed. Lovage is a must to have for preparedeness.

Add sugar or honey to your tasting. Boil until rhubarb becomes soft. Take off the heat. Pull out peel bundle, discard. Now you can strain or leave pieces in. Cool and enjoy! Hi, you are right in being exited over the Lovage plant (here in Sweden it is called Libbsticka) - it is fantastic. It tastes like broth, and you only need like 3 leaves in a big pot of stew. The advantage is that you get the taste of broth without the salt. I have two of these in my garden. I use a glass (jam glass) with a lid, put the leaves in and put the glass in the freezer. This way their strong smell don`t get to the other foods in there. You can of course also dry them. I do the same with chives, only use the scissor to make them into small bits, freeze them and they melt and taste like fresh ones. Wishing you luck with this year`s harvest, and must say I have been very impressed with your garden these previous years! Greetings from Sweden, from me and Martin, my husband.

You can see that the rocky dirt at the edges of the structure is falling/subsiding. Dirt does that!!! See ya and stay warm little plants. Ever think about a wood heater in the hoop structure? You got the wood - you could also use hot water heat. Bob
