I find it fascinating that you guys feel the need to go from a remote place to an even MORE remote and isolate place to relax. Like you live in the middle of nowhere already! 😅
Their main home is not truly ‘remote,’ they have neighbors, and you can see traffic on the road to the (my orientation) left of their high tunnel. They live about half an hour from an IGA, I believe, grocery store. Haven’t been in their area for awhile, so this is as memory serves. Getting away to a more remote place probably cuts the noise down considerably.
Exploring the outdoors is just part of living in Alaska for us, once you live here you redefine what remote means, when we use the term we are referring to a place fairly fair off the road system. This place sure was a blast but easily accessible :)

I'm sure that me being from Florida, where a convenience store is on every corner, vs ya'll, living in a less populated area, your idea of exploring is different than mine. Some ppl think there are grizzlies at every corner, and moose in all backyards. I thoroughly enjoy watching ya'll can fish, or eggs, and go fishing with the dogs. Love the lifestyle!

29 degrees is a heatwave so far this winter. It was 7 in Anchorage last night and we felt hot. Lol. I enjoyed watching you guys do the "Alaskan shuffle" across the lake. You guys are truly Alaskans at heart. ❤️
It's now 8pm and 34 in Anchorage...major heatwave! Lol. It's a double edged sword...it's cloudy and dreary but warm, but then the sun comes out and it's gorgeous but the temp drops big time. I'll take the cold with the sun any day right now....getting dark by 4pm and sunup at 10am until December 21 when we start gaining daylight again. ❤️ Alaska life.

Where I’m from, Scotland, we have something called bothies which are kind of similar as public cabins. They’re basically old buildings that are open to hikers. They’re great because they’re equipped with basic survival gear, furniture, fire etc and there’s a long tradition of a log book for visitors to leave messages in which is always cool to read. We do the same thing and make sure there’s fire making materials and some food or drink left behind. Some people even leave games like cards or something too so it’s really fun to check them out 😊 as always your videos are the highlight of my mornings ! Thanks for taking us along 😁👌

Same thing is true for Scotland I reckon :) do visit, even if it's short because I guarantee you it'll be an amazing experience :)

Amazing clarity of the lake! I got really excited when you guys caught a big trout! A bit disappointed that you couldn’t keep it and had to let it go. I love how you two enjoy the simple things in life and share the experiences with us! The ice was beautiful! How much does it cost to stay in the different cabins and how long can you rent them? And yes your puppy was styling his wool coat! Once again thanks for letting us live vicariously through you!
You can find the cabin rental info by searching- Alaska public use cabins. Rates vary by location and time of stay allowed varies as well. $60-120/night. Usually up to a week or so is allowed.
I make cowboy coffee. The trick to pouring no grounds is this: once you boil your coffee for 5-8 minutes and remove it from the heat, a few minutes later, pour about 1/2 cup cool water all around the inside edge of the pot and down through the spout if your pot has one, and that will settle the grounds to the bottom. Works every time. So glad neither of you fell or broke any bones or cracked your heads on that slick ice. If you had, you might not have been able to get yourself back to shore. I say this because I had a fall on my frozen icy, wet, slippery driveway and even after I was able to slowly scoot, roll, myself to the yard, it too was iced and wet, so no traction there either, couldn’t stand up to even take off my coat to throw in front of me to walk on, etc. It was a frightening situation and below freezing, but finally got to some dirt in an iced flower bed that provided traction for me and then crawled to the front porch. If you ever go fishing again on a similar frozen surface with no snow or traction, consider tying a rope to a tree and taking the other end of it with you onto the frozen water so you can use that to pull yourself off the ice.

There was a drunk person whom once fell on ice :) then he was so concerned because he could felt some moisture trough the back of his pants, so he was praying; I hope it is blood, I hope it is blood :) (not the bottle of booze he had in his pants' back pocket being broken). It happens to me once yet not with booze but with my coffee, I was going to fall of from the last few steps of a stair while holding my coffee, I got an injury in my right foot that later turned blackish and it did hurt for days but I did not let my coffee to slip from my hand. I was like: I hope it is blood :) but not my coffee. Sorry for the boring comment :) (I promise I would do it again)

Congrats on your new adventure! Getting some ice cleats to throw on when you get to ice, or lake's edge, would be a great investment and make your walks across the ice, especially with equipment or the auger, much more steady - and safe, and especially to prevent your legs from sliding inward into the bit while you're drilling.

Never having been on a frozen lake before, the clear ice looked like you could have fallen through at any moment. I was honestly holding my breath for you in the beginning. (I'm used to African sun and the only thing covering our lakes and dams are hyacinths :)

Noticed how carefully you both walked on the ice so not to fall, what you need are micro spikes to slip on your boots allowing you to easily walk around the ice with out any risk of falling, you guys sure put out some very interesting videos

Eric wondered about who built the cabin- I wouldn’t know for sure but it looks like the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which was a 1930s great depression era jobs program responsible for building the national parks system and many other beautiful public works around the country.
I don't think any public use cabin (state or federal) in Alaska was built by CCC. Many were the original cabins of local homesteaders, roadhouse owners, and trappers who sold it to the state or feds. This cabin was originally owned by a local trapper. I'm not sure if it's the original or it was rebuilt. However, if someone knows more, please share.
The CCC did some outstanding projects in our country back in those days. We have Franklin Roosevelt State Park in Georgia and some of the rock work they did in that park is purely astonishing. He was the founder of the CCC and rest assured there were some amazing projects in the area in close proximity to Warm Springs were he frequently visited. America at work with pride.

Brings back all the memories of my sons ice fishing on Nisswa Lake in the 70's and 80's. They had a fish house in a little community of fishhouses. We lived beside Nisswa Lake for 26 years. I remember the ice "talking" to us in the winter going "boom, boom boom" in the middle of the night.
I can't fathom such low temperatures and that kind of ice/snow. It was 74 in Fort Worth Texas today. We're supposed to drop 20 degrees Monday, but's no where near the winter temperatures we used to have around this time. I was actually sweating today, lol. Snazzy new doggo sweater! Wool! Nice! I really appreciate the bloopers, lol!

In all the years I thought fishing was b-o-r-i-n-g it's now obvious that I was missing the human element. Both of you make fishing fun to watch. Joy instead of ego and testosterone. That trout was huge! I still remember the river trout we ate as kids -- my dad and our grandfather fly fishing at dawn. Thank you both for being you.
Many of those cabins and picnic tables were built as Eagle Scout projects. They also usually have a log book on the table. It's fun to peruse who was there before you.

Amazing clarity of the lake! I got really excited when you guys caught a big trout! A bit disappointed that you couldn’t keep it and had to let it go. Lol 😆 I also loved the big window in the cabin looking out the lake that was so nice! Dogs also looked cozy and it was nice to see you guys relaxing and enjoying a cup of coffee ☕️. In Canada, ice fishing for Lake Trout is a tradition. Night fishing is amazing, especially if it's clear and the stars are out. Everyone needs to experience it!

You can find the cabin rental info by searching- Alaska public use cabins. Rates vary by location and time of stay allowed varies as well. $60-120/night. Usually up to a week or so is allowed.

I make cowboy coffee. The trick to pouring no grounds is this: once you boil your coffee for 5-8 minutes and remove it from the heat, a few minutes later, pour about 1/2 cup cool water all around the inside edge of the pot and down through the spout if your pot has one, and that will settle the grounds to the bottom. Works every time.
So glad neither of you fell or broke any bones or cracked your heads on that slick ice. If you had, you might not have been able to get yourself back to shore. I say this because I had a fall on my frozen icy, wet, slippery driveway and even after I was able to slowly scoot, roll, myself to the yard, it too was iced and wet, so no traction there either, couldn’t stand up to even take off my coat to throw in front of me to walk on, etc. It was a frightening situation and below freezing, but finally got to some dirt in an iced flower bed that provided traction for me and then crawled to the front porch. If you ever go fishing again on a similar frozen surface with no snow or traction, consider tying a rope to a tree and taking the other end of it with you onto the frozen water so you can use that to pull yourself off the ice.

There was a drunk person whom once fell on ice :) then he was so concerned because he could felt some moisture trough the back of his pants, so he was praying; I hope it is blood, I hope it is blood :) (not the bottle of booze he had in his pants' back pocket being broken).
It happens to me once yet not with booze but with my coffee, I was going to fall of from the last few steps of a stair while holding my coffee, I got an injury in my right foot that later turned blackish and it did hurt for days but I did not let my coffee to slip from my hand. I was like: I hope it is blood :) but not my coffee.

Congrats on your new adventure! Getting some ice cleats to throw on when you get to ice, or lake's edge, would be a great investment and make your walks across the ice, especially with equipment or the auger, much more steady - and safe, and especially to prevent your legs from sliding inward into the bit while you're drilling.
Another great adventure. I don't think I would have the courage to get out on the lake. You guys always have something new.

Bo knows... Bandit's ready ! The boys are getting all decked out in their snazzy winter gear. I'm surprised you two aren't using ice gripper chains on your boots. Easy on/off, sure makes traction a lot "more gooder" too. Good fish caught, very nice. Lots of fun.

Never having been on a frozen lake before, the clear ice looked like you could have fallen through at any moment. I was honestly holding my breath for you in the beginning. (I'm used to African sun and the only thing covering our lakes and dams are hyacinths :)

Noticed how carefully you both walked on the ice so not to fall, what you need are micro spikes to slip on your boots allowing you to easily walk around the ice with out any risk of falling, you guys sure put out some very interesting videos

Eric wondered about who built the cabin- I wouldn’t know for sure but it looks like the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which was a 1930s great depression era jobs program responsible for building the national parks system and many other beautiful public works around the country.
I've stayed in a very similar cabin in Northern California, same wood beds and stove with an outhouse.
My Dad was in the CCC when he was a kid in the 30s, in California.
I don't think any public use cabin (state or federal) in Alaska was built by CCC. Many were the original cabins of local homesteaders, roadhouse owners, and trappers who sold it to the state or feds.
This cabin was originally owned by a local trapper. I'm not sure if it's the original or it was rebuilt.
However, if someone knows more, please share.
The CCC did some outstanding projects in our country back in those days. We have Franklin Roosevelt State Park in Georgia and some of the rock work they did in that park is purely astonishing. He was the founder of the CCC and rest assured there were some amazing projects in the area in close proximity to Warm Springs were he frequently visited. America at work with pride.
My Grand paw helped build timber line lodge in Organ back in the 30s I think , he used to tell some cool story’s .
I love each and every one of your videos. I’m 33 and have 2 kids ones 14 and my other is 13. I truly think when they go to college I may be moving to Alaska. I really hate being cold (it hurts) but you guys always make me want to come to Alaska. If I was younger I would learn to live with the cold and come there anyway. The gardening alone would be enough but, the fishing if always so cool. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing life.

Brings back all the memories of my sons ice fishing on Nisswa Lake in the 70's and 80's. They had a fish house in a little community of fishhouses. We lived beside Nisswa Lake for 26 years. I remember the ice "talking" to us in the winter going "boom, boom boom" in the middle of the night.
I can't fathom such low temperatures and that kind of ice/snow. It was 74 in Fort Worth Texas today. We're supposed to drop 20 degrees Monday, but's no where near the winter temperatures we used to have around this time. I was actually sweating today, lol. Snazzy new doggo sweater! Wool! Nice! I really appreciate the bloopers, lol!

In all the years I thought fishing was b-o-r-i-n-g it's now obvious that I was missing the human element. Both of you make fishing fun to watch. Joy instead of ego and testosterone. That trout was huge! I still remember the river trout we ate as kids -- my dad and our grandfather fly fishing at dawn. Thank you both for being you.
Many of those cabins and picnic tables were built as Eagle Scout projects. They also usually have a log book on the table. It's fun to peruse who was there before you.
