Installing Amazon Alexa ~IN~ Your Ceiling
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 мар 2018
- I decided to install an Amazon Alexa (aka an Echo Dot) in my ceiling and hook it up to some ceiling speakers I had. This made the device perform a lot better in my opinion and I thought it came out pretty good!

Putting a smart speaker in the ceiling integrates the Amazon Alexa into your home/room and just makes the audio, the mic's ability to hear you clearly, and the overall experience of using Alexa that much better.

*It’s perfect for me. The size is exactly **Newest.Technology** what I needed. The sound is loud enough for me to hear without having to turn it higher. Suggestions on various uses is extremely helpful! Worth every dollar spent!*

*Movie over*
"Man that's creepy. His laughing scares me"
*alexa begins laughing*
Fireboltofdeath I feel the same way even though I have a Google home mimi
Better fucking shoot it before she turns to skynet
Fireboltofdeath creepy!
Haha true true they are creepy as doh
too late, it has begun!
I just watched a bunch of your videos last night thinking "man, I wish he'd bless us with some new content." Prayers answered.
ha thats really great, glad i was able to come through for ya!
like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
The DIY tech guy in me really truly appreciates what you’ve just done here. I’m inspired to do something future tech like this when I work on my home cinema.
I am so jealous!
You have a seperate room for your doritos!
lol, i can tell you, its pure heaven
techfreshness Im sure it is!
You are back!!! Nice :) always great to see a video from you I learn so much.
Another dope video. I've been wanting to install an Amazon dot in my wall for months
Great setup,
Love this saw this video before. Came back to it and took the plunge and order the required to get it installed. Can't wait. Thank you easy to understand and well put together video. No BS or faff just straight up advice I appreciate it 🙏
Now the laughing will be louder
lol!
Thats what 'she' said

Dope video, i wish the face on the Alexa could be white that would look so sick as it blends in with the white ceiling
Nice idea. Lovely room too
I like this idea. Nice to see it in action. I thought about ways of achieving this before but I would have to take all my floor boards up to install speakers. It gives the feeling that Alexa is all around you like in the Sci fi movies. My Echo kept setting off every time you said Alexa lol. Great job!
OMG UR DOWNSTAIRS PLACE IS SICKKKK
Damn! That is freaking amazing! Now I wanna go buy some ceiling speakers & dots to set this stuff up!
Nice idea. I love it.
The ceiling looks like a classroom ceiling...
Edit: How did I get so many likes so quickly? This is the most I've ever gotten!
GD Avocado no its just used in schools its actually really convienient for sound absorbtion and its easy installation
That’s in every basement ever
It's called a drop ceiling, they are like that in office buildings as well because they are designed for easy access for maintenance.
\Dylan \Randolph no not really lol
\Dylan \Randolph no it's not...
I really like that set up 👍
Being able to move around the room hearing a soothing voice coming out of various speakers reminds me of Disney World 🐭
Nice idea , i like ur thinking way 😉
That sounds Awesome I'm liking this
Nicely done!
This is awesome! Great job!
It's really cool that it keeps listening after it has finished a command, wish my Google Home could do that
That's actually awesome!!
This is sweet, tempted to do this myself 😅
Now thats the future, innovating idea
Wow well that was really cool!
Dayton Audio is actually produced and made (some parts anyway) in Dayton, Ohio. That is fascinating to me as I have lived in Dayton for years and never knew this company existed. That's pretty cool!
That Dayton Amp is great for small speakers, I have a few and they are 5 years plus and still going strong
yeh i think they make good quality stuff
Awesome video. Really like that setup!,!
thanks thor, am enjoying it!
That is so cool!
Room goals
This is pretty cool man. Well done.
thanks meng
Man that is so smart. That is awesome 👏.
This is cool it reminds me of the Disney movie smart house
That was a cool idea
I enjoyed your video. It was very helpful. Thank you!
great, very welcome, glad to help out!
Cool idea!
Awesome idea!!!
That's a really, really, REALLY nice basement.
Nice Job
i'm not a fan of the Echo personally, but this is pretty cool. well done
thanks man
sahlay what do you prefer? I’m looking for a good Alexa device.
@@MoparGuy1625 get echo dot 3rd gen super cheap rn
You have a cool room
Good idea.
Good job
Question can u use multiple echo dot?
Can you adjust volume using Alexa, or do you have to go into the closet to manually turn the knob on the amp?
This is so cool
Love This
You have drop down panels in your house?
Can you give the link for that amplifier
All you need to do now is to add some blue LEDs that change brightness depending on what sound is coming from Alexa. That was a great idea to put it in the ceiling and hook it up to the speakers though, nice work!
That’s cool 👍🏻
How did you fix the echo in the ceiling?
Genius!!!
Nice setup. I'm thinking of doing something like this where I'm going to replace my extra smoke detectors with Google WiFi/Home pucks. This is a great starting point guide.
Did you run power manually or just a long extension cable?
thanks justin, since it is powered via usb, i just used an extra long usb cable.
Ok not gonna lie that is pretty awesome
How did you get power in the roof?
That’s dope
Hey, man thanks for the video. What is the name of your speakers? And how much watts they have to be supported by that amp?
they are just some boston acoustics, any would really do, you really only need like 40 watt speakers if that, 25 would work
I love how you say thank you to your Alexa 😂
ha, i really only did that for the demo
Great video
Goals for my upstairs add I have the same type of ceiling.
Good idea. I put mine in a 2 gang outdoor weatherproof box with blue tooth to my amp to run my outdoor speakers around the pool. If I had a drop ceiling I would like this clean install. Maybe I could have done this in my patio's celing instead of the waetherproof box.
nice, that sounds great, voice controlling music from outside must be a pretty cool feeling!
This man is living in 2020
ha, it does sometimes feel like it! a great time to be alive

I want to connect an old timmey studiio microphone the Alexa. I only wat it to respond when I push the button on the microphone. Can this be done?
Love your setup! Should have a retractable screen to make it love even better
true that, i considered it but i think i do liek the screen
As I’m watching this video, My Alexa is responding to your questions too 😂😂😂😂😂
yeh it does that!
Nice basement
You have a nice basement.
thanks we enjoy it alot
How is the dot purple
Nice
Great Idea! how did you run power to the Echo?
in a dangerous way that could cause a fire.
i understand the speakers but for the ceiling lights what other devices did you need to buy to control the lights in the ceiling i see a few people online controlling lamps for wall plug devices you at to the current wall plugs but the ceiling lights hows this work?
so i use philips hue, that comes with a control box you plug into your router, then you can control all the hue bubls directly, so in other words you can control it with alexa or your phone, since alexa will control that philips control box. alternatively you can get alexa/smartphone enabled wall switches and outlets, so that anything that plugs in or is connected to the wall switches can be controlled. does that make sense?
How come, You don’t have to say Alexa all the time
there is a setting in the alexa app called 'follow up mode' so where she keeps listening for a few seconds after an initial command
Hi, can't find the following command. It's probably not available in the UK yet.
yeh i think thats the case. so dumb, seems like they could just isntantly roll that out across the globe, i mean come on ha
Tenzing Ngodub š
Darren Bentham check under settings for your specific echo device in the Alexa app
I did the same in my house, connecting the ceiling speaker to an amp then to Alexa. I have that setting for couple months already and I like it but the issue I run into is white noise.
Because the speakers are powered all the time but nothing is playing thru them I get a white noise (tiny).
Do you have any issues like that?
hmm, i hadn't noticed too much, maybe turn your amp down and alexa up or the alexa volume down and amp up. or try new aux cable, do you have it running close to any electrical wires? your amp could maybe be noisey?
Will the smart plugs safely work with a dumb stove - making it a smart oven /stove? Thanks.
i don't think so, you really need a stove that has that functionality built in. if you think about how a stove works, you don't really turn it on and off like a light switch, so just 'plugging' it into a smartplug wouldn't really achieve what you are trying to do, plus could be a little dangerous
When you ask Alexa to turn on your lights, is that because you have the smart plugs in the wall outlets? Thanks
that is one way to do it, for my downstairs though i use philips hue bulbs with a hub. you can also get wall switches that can communicate with alexa
You arent using those in ceiling speakers for dolby atmos bro?
ha i might add a couple for that later, (i don't have any surround hooked up at all yet.)
hello, thanks for the video. I was always interested how to make the same system but also including some additional mics for several rooms. So that I can enter another room and Alexa hears my voice and commands. Is it possible?
yes, well you just have to buy multiple echo dots
techfreshness thanks a lot
You really should mount that thing to the t-grid. They make hangers for it, it'd just be a matter of attaching the Echo to the hanger; look for "ceiling tile hangers", "t-grid hangers", or "drop-ceiling hangers".
Which is what brought me here, I was looking to see if someone had mounted her using a proper mount.
FBI: "thx for making it easier to spy on you..."
What did these speakers do before? TV-surround sound? Now they are ONLY for the Echo, right?
Doctor Gadgetix they did nothing, they came with his house.
Now they do music via Alexa and other Alexa things.
Still, I would have connected it to a speaker system too for music
i know, unfortunately, i don't love using just my voice to control music, i do prefer going through my phone for music control.
yeah, only echo, i think thats the key to it
thanc yau
Hi, how are you sending a command to Alexa without using the Wake word? Alexa or echo??
Ok, this made me subscribe, an awesome idea! Now tell me, how do you make your Echo to accept commands like "set temperature to ..." without having to use a skill prefix, etc?
ha sweet. as far as the temp, well the nest just happens to able to respond to that specific command without needing any wierd prefix, unfortunately a lot of alexa enabled devices require those wierd prefixes as you know. its really just kind of hit or miss depending on the command/device comboination. usually if it requires some wierd prefix or syntax, i'll just not use that feature
techfreshness I see, thanks. I'm mostly using Alexa with DIY devices, so I couldn't recognize the Nest device on the wall for the first glimpse. (It was visible in another video you've posted.) Oh well, thanks anyway for the reply. I can just hope in the future they'll be able to get rid of the need for skill prefixes.
It's called follow up mode
thats cool and totally agree. so have you done any diy with any blinds or window treatments? that was gonna be my next thing i think.
Let's say it's in progress - i have some motors and controllers to play around with, but i'm still looking for an intelligent platform to manage my devices through Alexa - I mean you can hook up basically anything to Home Assistant, then you can control Home Assistant's attached devices with Alexa, but apart from a few rare cases, you're limited to "Turn off this", "Turn on that". Sounds kinda weak for me, so i'm researching my own platform instead of home assistant, which would feature machine learning to automatize stuff, based on habits (like it records usually when you go to sleep, etc.) and sensor data (motion, light, temperature, etc)
Great setup! What's the size of your recessed lighting and what bulbs did you use by Philips?
thanks jon, i think those are 4.5 inch cans? i use the philips br30 bulbs in them; correction i think they are the 5 inch cans
@@techfreshness thanks so much! Been looking for answers on what bulbs to use..your set up is exactly what I have been after!
sweet, glad to help. had a chance to get any yet?
@@techfreshness I was still in the decision process....until i watched your video! I even had the same wonders with putting speakers in the ceiling and hooking Alexa up to them... I think we re on the same page! ;-)
haha excellent
That is really freakin' cool. I didn't know you could get it to turn on space heaters and stuff like that. I guess you just need some kinda switch that the space heater plugs into, and then name that switch "space heater" in your devices?
Tommy Tindall Yeah you answered it yourself. You just plug into wifi plug and you have it.
yep yep!
Every time you said hey Alexa my Alexa responded 😂😂😂
I like this
i also like this
Which speaker stands did you use in the front?
it was these guys amzn.to/2JemE2K
Hey please tell me about Bose Acoustimass 10 ?
very good. go for it if you thinking about
Awesome idea but I would have gave the speakers a little more power with the Insignia 200 watt by 2 channel receiver
That's a really ingenious idea, it actually looks quite good up in the ceiling, but I think it would be better if the colour of the Echo's top panel matched the colour of your ceiling tiles. Are you using the new follow on feature? Sadly I can't access that yet because as far as I know, it's not available in Australia, certainly I don't yet think the feature is available on my Echo Dot.
I was thinking the same. At the very least I would have repainted or plastidipped the top.
ha plastidip, that is a great idea actually!
yep, follow up mode i belive its called, stupid they dont' release it everywhere right, what does the country have to do with it ha.
Dope
What is the screen of you TV? That's huge

That moment when your Alexa reacts to the video because the video mentions "Alexa"...
And it said the same Warren Buffet explanation at the same time too.
