    The resurgence on jocat vids makes me both so happy and so sad

  • @dragonsfury55
    @dragonsfury55 3 месяца назад +8

    Pretty much had a similar experience to jocat when i started.
    Came in with a WOW mindset and blew through arr and got to the pre prune post arr and stopped for six months.
    Came back to pre prune arr and finished it and made it to the long walk through the forelands andtook a few deaths due to gear issues and stopped for a few months. Came back due to the lockdowns and boredom and wound up blowing through hw sb and shadow in a month and have stuck with the game since.
    Biggest difference between me and jocat is i love reading and enjoyed all the dialogue once i got out the WOW mindset which admittedly took almost year to do. There's a bit more to why i kept falling off but this comment is long enough as is.

      yeah biggest thing for me when it comes to a game is the story. like to enjoy what i'm reading and the choices you get to make sometimes for dialogue is really fun. i do agree though that ARR is a bit hard to get through because there is so much story content in the first expansion to HW's starting point. however, without giving anything away, i will admit it is important to pay attention if your a story content fan because a lot of stuff ends up getting mentioned or brought up again.
      makes my heart ache a bit every time they bring up "A smile better suits a hero." as one of your dialogue choices.

    Ok I like your content you guys are very entertaining, but if you're gonna react to an informational video and you want to talk. Pause the video, say what you have to say and then unpause the video. With you talking over the video at the same time the video is speaking turns into noise, not voicing your opinion. I'm probably just wasting my time because nobody ever responds to my comments, but If you see this please keep it in mind.

    • @Jrocks26
      @Jrocks26  3 месяца назад +5

      Thanks for the comment! We are aware, but its actually alot trickier than it looks with our setup. We are both watching our own copy of the video on our own PC so it's extremely hard for us to each start and stop the video without it being way out of sync. We usually try to hold our main points for the discussion after.

    Joined on a friend's reccomendation and played till 34, quit because of boring combat. Joined again 2 years later with a new character on a whole friend-group's reccomendation, bought the ARR skip (started at heavensward) and found myself quite enjoying the story, asked for the missing context points, and stuck with it since. Then i made an alt-character to re-experience the ARR original story (after quest-cut but before the dungeons were reworked) since i skipped over it and found myself DEEPLY invested in all these characters origins that i am now re-discovering or even playing for the first time (level 34 is not that far in). Cried at that one part.

      I wonder if I'll have a similar experience later. I've been playing it for the first time and just uninstalled after 60 hours.
      Level 43 but my MSQ was backed up at 25, and grinding it is pretty dull. I felt like I was clicking on things and checking off lists, but hadn't actually had any fun in SIXTY hours... I decided to quit when I realized I could have played FF9 almost twice in that amount of time, and I've been meaning to do that for years.

      @@Ahrpigi Maybe! i had a friend who was able to explain to me the things that i was missing context for, but for the most part i fell in love with the story almost immediately. Similarly it also helps to have friends who want to play with you and encourage you. the story is absolutely a singleplayer experience, but its still an MMO and its good to have friends to do other things with

    @13:55 There is a point in ARR or HW where some NPC's talk about the Great Goobue Wall during the calamity at the end of 1.0. During that time the production and dev team were throwing in high lvl mobs into the starting cities and they would one shot any low level toon or new character that joined late in the 1.0 cycle. Back in the day mounts had physical space in game and the biggest mount at that time was the Goobue mount. So high lvl toon would mount up and make corridors for the new or low lvl character to run outside and bind to the crystals. So there is lore that the NPC spout about what players did in 1.0 in 2.0+. But yeah 1.0 looked too much like FF11. Can't wait for the graphics update in DawnTrail.

    This was my very first MMO so I had to learn quite a bit. So doing those quests helped me learn but I understand that it might tidious after a while.
    I also got tips from my husband who got me into the game in the first place.😊
    But some help with the aetherytes and the search to be able to fly in every map is nice. I remember that part as being tidious.

    It had me at the end of the first half of ARR. And it hooked me heavily with the end of ARR.
    Heck I'm going through ARR with a new character with one goal in mind with her. Reach the level requirement for sage and play as the sage.

    A couple years ago was the big WoW exodus where a lot of WoW players (including myself) moved to FFXIV. The struggle is very real adapting the mindset of one MMO to the other. In WoW the endgame content is the only real content that matters. It's all about the grind, getting the gear, getting the numbers, doing the daily quests so you can keep advancing because raids are where Blizzard put all the focus on. Characters and story were largely glossed over and no one really cared.
    People entering FFXIV had to change their approach to the game fast if they wanted to enjoy it.
    A very popular comparison is Quin69 versus Asmongold when they were streaming. Asmongold decided to approach the game with an open mind, play from the start and seek to understand the story, the mechanics and the world in the event it was different. He found himself really enjoying the game, got sucked into chocobo breeding and racing and almost got addicted to the Gold Saucer. Quin got to Satasha and beat it, the very first dungeon in the entire game, meant to start easing players into the mechanics one by one, decided he knew enough about the game and bought a boost and started doing end-level dungeons. He had no clue what the mechanics were, got one-shot multiple times, had to be carried through content where even the healers and tanks were doing more damage than him as a DPS because he was spending so much time dead "Where were the 'eals!?!".
    They both stopped streaming but their time was a night and day difference and a lot of WoW players got filtered out in A Realm Reborn because an MMO that wanted them to pay attention to the story because that was the most important part of the content was not something they were used to and many couldn't adapt.

    Those early sidequests are definitely a trap for people used to RPGs and some MMOs. That said, they can be interesting to revisit when you're taking a break from other activities or just want to work on alt job type content. Many do still give some rewards other than the miniscule experience and gil, including tidbits of worldbuilding and lore.

    Great Video. Cant wait for more. But maybe as a personal Advice for the Future: could you turn up the Volume of the Video you watched a little bit higher? Its really hard to listen what its on the Video when you 2 are talking.
    Btw for me ARR was really Peak MMO in Terms of being a MMO. Many Systems you have now didnt existed back then line Crossworld Party Finder,Crossworld Linkshell or Stuff like that. It had way more interaction in Tell or Shout Chat since the People were in your Area. Especially if you raided coils back then when half of your Server gathered at the Entrances or looking for Groups. For the Story it wasnt really mmo Like but the whole Endgame was so much more fun than it is today.

    I'm The Purist for sure, but at the time when I got into it, I had nothing much to do and it was still ARR only, no patches and have been playing since Beta. I just enjoyed playing with friends very slowly. I was doing my own thing, not even touching the story much (I was actually at around level 20s MSQ while I had like around 2-3 jobs at 50 LOL) the combat was what really kept me from leaving the game coz it's just slow and chill. It was more getting on and socializing with friends more so than the story. My husband whom I met in the game back in 2014 is not even part of the Paths, he was a raider only for ARR until he started actually paying attention to the MSQ when we started dating before Heavensward HW story was definitely what gripped us in since. He also taught me how to play properly and I got into raiding since HW too! Also I'd have to disagree a bit on Endwalker being the best, it's definitely AMAZING though but I think Shadowbringers is still a teeny bit better ESPECIALLY after Endwalker. That's just my opinion, there are others that believe EW is the best because of ShB, which is also a very valid opinion! So I hope you both are enjoying the story! I can't wait for y'all to get to the best parts for sure but most importantly, take your time and enjoy everything through your own paces!

    The reason i don't play MMO's is because you can't really play if you don't have close friends who also play

    • @Jrocks26
      @Jrocks26  Месяц назад +1

      I would respectfully disagree, most mmos are designed like social hubs and are great for connecting like-minded gamers together. There are typically guilds all around looking for new players that are friendly and helpful.
      FFXIV, I find, has a particularly friendly community. I have made literally hundreds of friends from playing MMOs.

    "does he stream anymore?"
    Unfortunately jocat stopped streaming and making videos because there was a stupid controversy around a year ago with a video he made, because apparently if you're a straight guy who says he likes girls in a video, the internet will cancel you. He got doxed and him and his family started getting non stop harassment and suspicious packages to the point where he was scared for his family so he quit content creation.

    • @Maria_Erias

      He did the biggest no-no that was apologizing, then backflipping to appease some people (because someone targeted him over his I like girls video). Then he stepped into it with politics...thus harming his career.
      he should have just ignored his haters, not be pressured to put politics into his videos...and just be entertaining.

    I wonder if there is a true stark contrast to those who start now vs who started back in 2013. For me ARR wasnt boring because i had no other context to go off of when i started in November of 2013. I had to wait for the next part of the story. There was no one saying Heavensward or Shadowbringers is better.

  • @grygaming5519

    I honestly think any game and any community has a healthier ecosystem with a filter placed on the game itself. Yes I am for gatekeeping because without it you'll have people who will come into the game, demand change and ruin it for everyone. Then after they get their changes either the original fans leave or the tourists leave and spread like a locus.
    A person has to want to be introduced and be absorbed into the community and mold towards the community itself. I'm not honestly saying Jo's arguments are invalid its just one of those things the game is either for you are not...and that is completely fine. We have to be okay with that as well, its more or less after experiencing Helldivers 2. A game for everyone is a game for no one, and when the game becomes that for everyone..... it really becomes a game for no one.

  • @jack9316
    @jack9316 3 месяца назад +1

    I will also always say that playing a mmo by urself is absolutely dreadful and if you are one who does not enjoy story you should not play with those who do because you will inevitably take away from the enjoyment of those who do in some way. Playing this games story and going through expansions with friends has been the single most enjoyable experience in my life some might think that as sad but when you are deep immersed in a story talking about it with yours friends and deeply engaged in the combat and the lore there on a journey a decade long there is little that can compare to that level of experience.

    Disagree on the Hildibrand quests and wanting them have voice overs. They are so far beyond believable I think voiced lines would pull you out of that mindset needed. It probably doesn't help I have Peter Sellers' Pink Panther voice as Hildibrand in my mind.
