I wish they'd update the bosco lines so you get stuff like "Bosco, we're rich!" When you ping compressed gold. It still commands him but also is keeping the line

I would love that. They should give bosco a little extra personality. Ping the gold or a bittergem like you said and your dwarf will say "Bosco we're rich!" And Bosco will do a little cheer and a twirl before grabbing it.
Or if you ping a mushroom the dwarf will say "Hey bosco.. mushroom!" And Bosco will make a beep that sounds like he's trying to say mushroom back.

100% agree with the feeling of "taking in the environment" during solo. I'm not usually the type to get into the spirit of role-playing but there's just something about DRG that makes me want to press salute while facing Bosco after a tough mission, and then getting a nice cold brew at the bar right after.
It's like multiplayer gives you that chaotic energy of a bustling city while solo feels like taking a relaxing walk in the countryside surrounded with nothing but nature's music. Love this game to bits.

  • @WipZedKay

I played solo to get the achievements and after 100 missions solo, it just felt so lonely. The feeling of comradely, cooperation and the mindset of leaving no one behind is what makes this game what it is. The increased enemy spawn rate and the rocks and stones you get after clearing the swarm is what makes the co-op experience fantastic.
But I also understand why people like playing solo. The mission’s pace is completely dictated by yourself and Bosco is so nice to just have around.

I’ll be honest, a huge chunk of my playtime in DRG has been done solo.
I have a group of friends that enjoy playing this game, so it’s fun to get together for a session when we can. But life sometimes makes things hard, and we can’t always play. So I often just play solo. Sometimes to work on weekly challenges, or if I want to play a game, but can’t decide on what to play.
And with me just now getting into trying out mods for the game, it gives me more incentive to just try things on my own.
Playing solo also gives me a means to try out new builds. Like before, I rarely ever used Gunner’s Autocannon. But as of late, I’ve been experimenting with it a lot in solo and have been really enjoying it.
And I get not everyone enjoys playing these kinds of games alone. Heck; the game was built with multiplayer in mind. But I’m glad that unlike with so many other Team Shooters, DRG has something substantial for solo play.

I love the way DRG picks enemies from the total enemy pool rather than having all of them spawn on any given mission. I noticed Darktide does the same thing and it adds a lot. Its counteruntuitive because you'd think reduced enemy variety on an individual mission would be a bad thing, but it feels nice. It gives individual missions their own flavour.

i love how enemy stats change based on the player count *and* hazard level.
i didn't even realize that until checking something about a random enemy and notices the chart on the wiki.
it's just perfect, and is one reason i only do elimination on hazard 3 with 4 players (even though i play 4 almost all the time) - the health to DPS ratio just feels perfect there, whereas with 2 or 3 players it's a bit better on 4.

I played solo most of my time in drg. Transitioned around middle of season 2 to more multiplayer but i was around pre season 1 and played an ass ton of solo. The main reason was probably like you said, being able to take time. I remember I took a full hour on a 400 morkite mission in Magma Core solo and I just wanted to explore the entire cave, something I've noticed is pretty rare on 400 morkites in public lobbies. Take in the ambiance, hearing the deep choir in the track that was playing, the sounds of the geysers and the jets, probably my most memorable misson of all time. Second only to an EDD that haunts me in my nightmares.

I got into DRG thanks to a couple online friends. They took me on missions and we played for a bit, and I sucked of course. So, eventually I decided to learn the game properly by trying solo. Soon after, they all kind of lost their taste for the game, while I stuck with it, and being too anxious about playing with random folk I decided to just play the game solo more. And I started to really like the game that way.
Playing solo is a very different experience. Slower, more methodical, more careful when compared to the mayhem of multiplayer. There are only so many tries you get, there's no one else to help in a tough spot except Bosco. It really brings the alien and horror aspects of the game, that usually fall to the background with other people's chaos to the front.
I mostly play with random people nowadays as I overcame the anxiety of it, but sometimes I still like to fire up a solo mission, and take it slow, really let the atmosphere of the game seep in.

It’s relaxing enough but I’m not so relax that my thoughts are allowed to wander to anything depressing or what not. I think over active minds need to be distracted just enough to keep it from being bored and searching for emotional thoughts for stimulation, instead I have video games for wind down time AND activity and fun. Solo can be fun sometimes, and Bosco is a big help, but the thing is is that playing with other people is just so much more fun. Right now the only times I play solo is either during a Deep Dive that I think might be easier alone, when my internet is being crappy, or when I simply just wanna take my time, cause one thing I find myself doing in DRG is digging out huge bits of terrain that look like they'd be satisfying to break, but I can't really do that when playing with other people or I'd just be wasting their time if it ends up taking a while. If I'm playing solo, I can do that as much as I like.
Another reason why playing coop is better is because some perks like Shield Link and Field Medic just become entirely pointless when playing solo, so if you regularly run those perks then there's no situation you can use them when playing alone. Also like said in the video, the difficulty scales with the players present, so the game feels more challenging when there's several players as opposed to when there's just you and Bosco, that's another reason I typically like playing coop, cause I like the challenge, seeing just how much I can handle
All in all, the solo experience is definitely more fun than people give it credit for, it's just that coop is a way more fun experience, mainly for me it's just because I get to share the whole experience with everyone I'm playing with.

I like single player because it feels way more immersive, and I’ve had so many experiences with being down there in the caves, just exploring with the ambient sounds in the background and Fathomless Tomb playing, and just feeling that sense of scale and loneliness down there, even though I still get to kill decently sized hordes of bugs. It’s a really nice balance, and I think it’s really well made.

I used to just play solo when my dad and brothers couldn't play. Randoms scared me. Finally gave random a go. Love it but I have starlink internet in the middle of nowhere so sometimes it's a little glitchy and I feel bad. Still love solo to accomplish random things but helping greenbeards is fun too. Bosco never fragged me, always count on a quick revive (or 4 mwhahaha) it's fun sometimes just to explore how you want in solo, and you can pause the game big plus.

I started playing DRG with multiplayer only. I couldn't really do Solo, because I couldn't carry my own weight. I needed people to tell me what to do or that they can do the heavy lifting while I was learning the game.
But now I'm only doing Solo. The Community is great, wholesome af, but I had so much grinding to do to get the Overclock that I wanted : Special Powder for example. With the Mod SWARM CONTROL i could make deep dives and even elite deep dives managable solo. It gave me time to grind and also watch the D&D Campaigns I wanted to watch, but couldn't find time to do.
So I could listen to & watch the things I wanted, while also progressing in DRG slowly towards the place I wanted to be.
It's lonely, sure, but I enjoy it a lot ^^

I used to play this with my friends all the time but as their availability just became less frequent and I started getting frustrated having to wait for them to come online I started playing solo to scratch that itch. Over the last month I've clocked up over 100 hours of play time and completed nearly 200 solo missions (Mostly on Hazard 2-3, cause I'm a p*ssy xD)
I'm actually surprised how much I've started enjoying doing Industrial Sabotage. First time I played one I was like "I never want to do that again" but now I've played through them a dozen times and I've learned the strats I blitz through them. (I still only play them if they come up in an assignment though, they're not my top pick, especially if I'm just level/resource grinding)
I totally sympathise with the having something on in the background sentiment too. Though with Deep Rock I do end up having to pause whatever the video is during a swarm or something that wants my full attention.

After getting the achievement for so many solo plays, I found it to be a great time to watch videos on the side while playing. You've mentioned it in this video, but I know for me it feels like I am being more productive. I love the dwarf-to-dwarf lines and I wish there was a secret tag for single player that allows you replicate the flavourful lines. Bosco is a friend and I love that it salutes back when rock'n'stoning. I'm glad solo works so well and that Bosco is so flexible.

I've played more solo of DRG than co op because my friends just don't enjoy the game as much as I do, and I don't really see myself getting tired of it. I'm almost up to silver promotions across the board and I don't grind the game religiously to the point where I burn myself out, but every couple of days or so I'll jump in and spend sometimes a good 6 or more hours just going around and playing the game.
One of my biggest things that I tell new people about this game is how I feel about the difficulty scaling so I'm so happy to hear it talked about here. I love how the difficulties feel, I personally play on Hazard 4 when I just want to vibe because it fits that balance of not feeling monotonous but not punishing with good game sense. When I want to have that rush I play on 5, because I know that I need to lock in and actually use brain power or I'll lose in 20 seconds flat.

Titanfall 2 & Battlefield 1 were a couple multiplayer games I loved to play solo. The team/squad sizes made cooperation relatively "easy to do non-verbally" especially with the clear game mode objectives.
You hear a lot when playing online multiplayer solo, without friends to distract you... hear it all basically lol. The good, the bad, the weird.
But I'll never forget teaching some random kid I sniped a dozen + times in the previous match how to compensate for bullet drop on sniper rifles in Battlefield 1.
Had him join an empty lobby explained how the mechanic worked & how to adjust the sights + "how to aim up without changing the sights"
The enthusiasm and surprise I heard in him made me glad I replied to his angry xbox live message with an offer to teach him how to shoot instead of taunting him more 😅
It was a total big brother instict, first you gotta tease & style on the newbie to show 'em what they lack.... then once that's over and they calm down you teach 'em how to do it themselves 😂❤
Having three younger brothers has definitely influenced my personality that's for sure hahaha

I have over 2k hours in this game, and the majority of my play time is spent in solo funnily enough, I don't play with randoms unless I feel like it which isn't often, and I only play with my friends when they want to play which also isn't often. The atmosphere in the game feels so much more enhanced when you don't have 1-3 other dwarves running around and shouting constantly which I think helps you feel the more spookiness vibe that the caves truly are capable of. If anyone's ever played the game without Bosco, it's especially noticeable. When you are totally alone, the atmosphere in the caves have 0 distractions and make you feel a deep sense of loneliness and discomfort at times. I love playing this game with friends, but playing solo feels like a much richer gloomier atmospheric experience that is all thanks to the amazing sound design in the game carrying it when alone, and makes it feel just as incredible as playing with your friends. Sure, it's technically the same game when you play solo, but how it actually feels? It feels like a different game entirely, just because the mood and atmosphere feels completely different when alone, and the fact that you have to rely on yourself so much more, as there is no infinite incaps in solo, or none/1 if without Bosco. And I love that so much, it's why I'm still playing this game years after early access. Solo and co-op are both very different feeling experiences which further makes the game feel fresh on top of all the other systems that just essentially make the game infinitely replayable like map generation. It's rare to really find a co-op focused game, where the single player experience has a completely different feel despite being literally the same game fundementally, and I think that just further shows how much of a masterpiece DRG is at its core. This will probably be one of my favorite games for the rest of my life, and I can't wait to see what more the future holds for DRG, Rock and Stone!

I can second his opinions on solo missions. I have played my fair share of them and I still do when I just want to escape the real world. I'd say that morkite missions are the best solo missions because you can always have a moment of peace and quite when you're deciding where to go next and the only thing you hear are molly's footsteps, bosco's robotic movement sounds, cave ambience and the amazing background music. It's a whole different thing without people shouting at your ear all the time.

as someone who mostly plays deep rock solo (but occasionally with friends) i totally agree on it being chill and not having to worry about other players sometimes lol. in solo you can go at your own pace and you get to make all the decisions so everything you want to get done can get done. having to keep up with people speedrunning through the caves while you'd prefer to look around and people not seeing, or taking ages to harvest, resources you've pinged but can't reach yourself in multiplayer is truly just not a great experience sometimes. also you get the whole resupply pod to yourself, what's not to love about that? bosco does need to learn to protect doretta better and learn to mine a whole ore vein in one go though, grrrrr.
HARD agree on having a video or music up while playing games as well, love doing it but can't do it in multiplayer personally.

I think a lot of the change in solo comes from the lack of unique voice lines for pinging items. A lot of the newer lines for dwarves are comedic in nature, and removing that elements brings the game closer to the original vision of the game. I always use the words "mystery" and "tension" when describing that sort of atmosphere, but singleplayer really brings out the ambient soundtrack and the various sounds of the caves. You really feel like you're in isolation deep underground when you're doing solo, and not just because you don't have anyone with you.

For me solo definitely has it's pros and cons.
-You get to really appreciate the atmosphere of the game
-You are the main character and get to do all the things (this goes deeper than carrying, anything that doesn't just involve holding E in this game is not just a chore: building pipelines, gathering minimule legs, hacking robots even depositing aquarq is fun in this game, so it can really suck when teamnates get to them first, it's not anybodys fault but that just makes it even more frustrating)
But cons that keep people from solo once they get a hang of it
-Since you are the only flare producer, the caves are always dark and you will backtrack and get lost a lot. Playing scout is basically a very important QoL feature for solo (oh and Bosco light sucks bad)
-Your greybeard exp might be talking for the difficulty but while hazards are complex they do have their own share of problems, and in solo the difficulty does spike. Many gamemodes (on haz 5) escelate to the point of no breathing room and forced speedrunning. Since all the heat is on you all the time, you can't have a revive cycle and nobody is there to fill any skill gaps. You can lower it, but swarms will never feel as cool as normal and more of a scary even struggle for survival, which is cool in it's own way but can really feel needlessly stressfull and bad. Bosco is om but he can't take the heat off you aside from bit more disruption with rockets you forgot exist and recharge forever.
-As one player time can drag, given people hate IS due to length, this is bad

as far as "ambient sounds" you can often hear a distant/quiet drilling noise, the noise the various pods make when dropping in the game...this is obv deep rock sending other dwarves/supplies/etc. to other dwarven teams, since DRG obv isnt just 4 dwarves and management.

Granted it might be harder when playing on higher level, but i can install some mods to compensate it.
And when you stand above the abyss looking down hearing all those environment sounds , somehow it's so serene and relaxing in a way... something you can't get among the chaos of multiplayer, i get it, it might be fun and all with friends, but it's just not my style, people tend to rush to complete the objective as a team.. i prefer to doing mission on my own pace..

playing Solo is a much more methodical and low stress environment (at least for me) than playing public. Getting to control every action and know what has and hasn't been mined while slowly struggling more and more with incoming waves is an experience you can't quite meet with the chaos of the regular game, especially the always encroaching darkness and the far too slow flare recharge. Plus I feel like you never need to worry about Ammo with Solo, maybe I've just been getting lucky in my admittedly few Solo experiences, but being able to quad dip on every resup makes it a lot less stressful to run more inefficient builds.

    • @joaogomes9405
      @joaogomes9405 Год назад

It's just as stressful in a different way. You might get to use all four resupply charges, but you also have to be the one getting the 80 nitra by yourself. And you need to pick strategic spots to call in a resupply since you'll be coming back to it to get all the ammo. In higher hazards the most dangerous part of the mission is surviving the initial waves before getting the 80 nitra, and then surviving the resupply trips. Being hit by a wave while on the way to the resupply is always butt clenching

Bosco saves solo play and is a genius solution for covering the mechanics that are suppose to be co-op. Minerals in the ceiling? Bosco, go mine it. Need some light? Bosco, go there. Need someone to defend the drilldozer? Bosco, protect the drilldozer.
Solo is fun but not the same as co-op at all. The difficulty scaling for bug numbers is a huge reason why DRG is fun. 4 player swarms makes the game so target rich and feel like you're playing against an unending horde.
I'm happy that the devs tuned the difficulty so everyone can enjoy the game, even if it's not the ideal experience you can have fun by yourself.
Bug HP scaling, bug density/numbers scaling, to even how they act because dreadnoughts/praetorians/oppressors won't turn on a dime in solo play.
Ghostship took their time to make sure people who don't have friends and don't want to play online can enjoy their game. They really are a genuinely good company to my knowledge. Content is entirely free bar the cosmetic packs that fund the development of the game, seasonal passes aren't time gated and move to cargo crates, and they interact/communicate with the community. A gem in the hellscape that is "modern gaming." I just wish they got even more funding and grow in popularity so seasons can come even faster.

I pretty much exclusively play solo, with the exceptions of maybe joining into missions for assignments, mostly because my normal DRG friends have had busted computers for a while. I like going things at my own pace too, so it's nice to be ""allowed"" to farm gold, extra nitra, crafting minerals, and lost helmets, instead of having the group run off to fight a Bulk Detonator while I'm getting desperately-needed Magnite and then having to use Dash perk to catch up to half of them getting downed in the middle of an exploded lava geyser. Don't get me wrong, I love the multiplayer shenanigans, rituals, and teamplay; I recently had a Dreadnaught mission where we had to tryhard our brains out with aggro kiting and got to celebrate with a nice Driller shortcut to the drop pod while the Scout had no more ammo. Randoms will always have a different energy than friends though, and Bosco will always match my pace about as friendly as any AI can, even if he'll sometimes mistake an order to shoot a Rival Sniper as an order to point his flashlight at it.
