Watching a video of yourself really helps. I noticed that arm and foot angles i don't like, and want to fix. I also notice i feel better styling with my lower body as opposed to my upper body.

As a leader, in a word yes. It's great to want to express yourself but be considerate of your lead. If he is asking for a hand or leading a movement. Please follow first then style it out. It really is the difference between a dancer and a dance.

"Make sure the person you're dancing with survives too". Yes, i find it important to not kill my dance partners 😅😅😅😅

The "too much styling" is the reason why I mostly have no fun at all dancing Bachata Sensual. The vast majority of followers simply exaggerate with styling and don't follow at all. Which makes the dance absolutely disconnected (for the reason you say in the beginning of this video) and we leader are just "support" for follower styling, which is not the reason why I go dancing (although seems exactly the reason why many leaders do like bachata sensual). On the other side, dancing with a follower who follow is always very pleasant: especially because I have some good technical knowledge of the bachata music, which has a lot to do with percussions and rhythm and not only with the melody, so I can guide followers through things they never really explored before: THIS is the connection in dancing, the thing that I will never stop to say is the ONLY things that really matter. Hope I contributed positively to this great video!

Nice video! I love these discussions.
I'd like to add something. For me follower's over-styling starts when the followers body movements lack musical motivation. I could say dancing is built on top of a neutral basic by adding body movements and moves that express how we are feeling the song. And this forms a dialogue between leader and follower. I believe this connection with the song is a quite important aspect of developing self-expression in styling.

As a leader I take inspiration my partner. What is she good at, what does she express? I will use that. When she realizes that and responds with more, that's where the magic starts and we create something together.

Is it possible to have too much styling?
    Yes!
    Thank you for watching :D
I mostly run into the issue of too much styling in class, the ladies can be merciless when they're trying out a new move. It sometimes feels like the moment I let go of her hand, it travels at light speed to where it will be hardest for me to reach. But I like to look at the positive side, and say that it's helped me learn to think on my feet. At parties, it's very rare that someone gets so focused on styling that she can't follow what I'm trying to lead.

A couple of leaders I know complained about too much styling. One even said that if there's too much of it, he abandons the follower in the middle of the dance, because it feels like she doesn't need him, he becomes a hindrance to her.

Ok, well, leaving somebody on the dance floor seems a bit extreme. Followers do need to practice their styling, too. But yes, the following comes first 😉.

I never "understood" styling. As a petite female who always looked way younger than my actual age I try not to be "all over the place" with my movements because I feel more feminine and mature this way. Less is more beautiful to me and anyone who has ever seen traditional Caucasian dances where the ladies seemingly do nothing special except walking, holding their bodies upright and slowly moving their arms, knows how graceful and stylish minimalism (paired with precision) can be. I try to "style" my dancing in this manner - just having a really good posture, presence and sense for timing and hold myself with dignity and grace - even if that sounds weird in the context of Salsa and Bachata (especially the sensual stuff). I think this is something that others can see even though I really don't do much and my skill level in itself isn't too high, because people keep commenting how good my dancing looks and how I'm a dancer (as opposed to being a person who dances). Maybe my perspective is also influenced by my experience in stage acting - it teaches you how your body can speak very loudly even if you're just standing there. You can basically fill an entire hall with your energy without doing or saying anything if you know how to "create" and use your physical presence with control and intention.
