      I don't think there was any unfair "killing" here. It was a wonderful and very informative ego-less demonstration of the difference between players at different levels. The result was probably never in doubt - all in the numbers, but such a match-up is wonderfully useful to players that aren't at pro level (like myself) to demonstrate where to develop strengths and how to be more effective playing stronger players. Full credit to both you guys - we have learned much from both of you for some time now. Cheers from Sydney - Dave

  • @lurfmonkey

    I'm a 50 year old 4.0 player, but I regularly hit with a former 6.0 division I college player still in his 20s. When I first started playing with him, he constantly hit winners on me and we rarely had rallies longer than 4 shots. I kind of played like you in that I hit with a lot of topspin and the ball landed safely in the court with a lot of margin. It worked against players my own level, but it clearly wasn't working against someone far above me. I changed my game drastically in order to keep up with him. I started staying very close to the baseline and refused to get pushed back. That required me to learn how to hit the ball well on the rise. It took time away from him because if he had time, I was toast. I learned how to hit the ball deeper, even with heavy topspin. That reduced his ability to attack my shots. I made use of redirection a lot. He provided so much power, it didn't take much for me to change the direction of the ball with a short backswing and get him moving around the court. Lastly, I learned to flatten out my shots when the time was right. If you constantly use loopy topspin, it's really hard to hit winners or force errors against high level players, even if you are hitting the sidelines. Driving the ball at the right time can either produce winners or put them on their heels. It's not my natural shot, but it's something I had to develop. All of these changes went a long way to making him less comfortable and allowing me to dictate points way more often than before. Even though he's still the better player, things are way less lopsided now, and he definitely noticed. I think those adjustments would help against the high level players you play against. You're a higher rating than I am, so it should be well within your abilities.

      We mainly just practiced hitting. The only time we played a set, I beat him 6-1. This was less about me hitting winners and more about him making mistakes. It pays to keep the ball in play. Also, he had shoulder issues and couldn’t serve like he used to. His groundstrokes were fine though.

    • @Dan1elAndrade
      @Dan1elAndrade 4 месяца назад

    • @lurfmonkey
      @lurfmonkey 4 месяца назад

      Yes. Obviously, he’s not a 6.0 anymore. I would probably put him at a 5.0. But he was still in his 20s at the time. I do think certain styles give him problems. He was used to playing big bangers, whereas I am a counterpuncher. I take what you give me and redirect it. I have a lot of trouble with soft hitters because I don’t generate a lot of my own power. And I do think if he had the same serve from his college days, he would’ve won a lot more free points.

    It was really cool to see the difference in pace.
    When I watch videos of Karue vs Marcos Giron, they are unfazed by the pace and its deceiving to the viewer just how fast balls are because they have good footwork and good at anticipating. This video you can clearly see the difference in the quality/pace of balls between pro and club level. Many of Winston's shots were defensive as he was fighting to stay alive.

    • @lalafuzzy943
      @lalafuzzy943 2 года назад +2

      Nah Karue wasn’t going big bro... When you watch pros play, you’ll see them do many mistakes because they are pressured to hit bazookas at every shot or else the opponent will just destroy them with a winner. Here Karue knew his opponent wasn’t good enough to do that, so he cut his speed to about 75% to avoid making mistakes by making shots that aren’t even needed to win the point comfortably.

    • @lalafuzzy943
      @lalafuzzy943 2 года назад

      Btw Karue wasn’t holding back by hitting shots at 70-75%, he would have probably lost more points if he actually tried to go for winners because he would have done maybe twice the number of unforced errors. Of course he would still have won 6-0 comfortably.

    Excellent content and thank you. A ton of effort goes into this much editing. As for the take-away here - it's so important to stay within yourself in any sport - especially tennis. It's so easy to feel the pressure to ratchet up your game against a stronger opponent. The higher error rate has a psychological effect in that once you've decided that hitting bigger is the way to win, as you fall further behind, you feel even more pressure to hit even bigger shots - a certain doom loop (bit like gambling - throwing good money after bad). At least that's how I have at times felt. Many thanks and cheers from Sydney - Dave

    What a pleasure to watch someone simply prepare early and hit the ball in front of them. He was always in control of his body. No over-swinging, slappy forehands, no running around backhands- just simple movement and very clean, deep, consistant strokes. Winston, I disagree with your assessment of yourself. I don't think you made more errors today. I think this was maybe the best I've seen you play. He was hitting to keep you in points and you responded very well. You should feel good about how you played. He's just way better and hit the ball deeper in the court and could ground it out longer than you. And, of course, he did what one is supposed to do with a serve by starting the point the way he wanted. He dictated you return. It was a pleasure watching him play the physical chess game which is tennis.

      Thats why you press at the net , sure you will get passed at the net a few times but it puts a little bit of pressure to pass you just sayin. And the point is to keep as much of your energy as possible, oscillating left and right take a lot out of you , thats when playing an open pro will jack you up cuz they will obliterate you stroke for stroke

    You should totally play Mason Tran! Most of your video's are at the Racquet Club of Irvine and I believe he trains there so it would be fun to see you or anyone else play him there!

    I have not seen your YT channel is about a year but this is the best I have ever seen you play. I know the score says you got your butt kicked, but you rallied well. This was enjoyable to watch. The only minor criticism I have is that if you two had exchanged sides as is normal, it would have been interesting to see how Karues' shots look coming in, instead of just seeing them hit away. Overall, good job, Winston.

    Fascinating video....thanks for doing this! I think it's so intriguing to see matchups of significantly different styles and skill. Like a 12 y/o ranked stud vs a 45 y/o 4.5 pusher...or a highly ranked woman against a less skilled but maybe stronger/faster man. Nice stuff!

    Last point was great! But Karue just didn't have problems with your really good forehand and backhand shots. Amazing, and just shows how far ahead pros are compared to very good recreational players.
    Karue is really, really good, and fun to follow with all his positive attitude, talent, dedication to improve and ability to comprehensively share top practise content with all of us.

    This was really awesome to see. It's always something that we at the rec level are curious about. It was great to showcase how if we clipped your best point, you wouldn't necessarily think it was 4.5 vs. 7.0, but the entire body of the set and the scorecard show the world of difference between you and Karue (respectfully). That's one of the beautiful things about tennis. You can feel so close while being so far away and sometimes vice versa. You can play someone you're on average better than and lose 6-2, 6-2 on an off day, and you can win a match 6-4 6-3 while having a negative point differential. More stuff like this is awesome :D And also if you're not following Karue, it's a big mistake!

    What stands out to me first off is the relaxation in his strokes. (I appreciate the stakes are low, and that Karue might be more tense during an actual tournament). Then, of course, the serve. Super interesting to see that you were able to have a couple of decent rallies with him though. I'm somewhere around 4.5/5 level, thought that I'd have no chance in winning more than a point against an ex-pro, and that each rally would be 2/3 shots max. Thanks for the video!

    • @zando5108
      @zando5108 2 года назад +1

      i'm not entirely convinced this was Karue playing as it was a real match. There are definitely points where Karue really turns it up to 80-90% still playing high percentage shots and you can see how the pace immediately rattles Winston and the point ends within 2-3 shots from then on.

    • @akiratheastronaut
      @akiratheastronaut 2 года назад

      @@zando5108 I think you're probably right. There's a part 2 though, where he plays more aggressively, and the rallies are still sometimes longer than I would have expected.

    Beautiful set... Wonderful to watch for any club level player... Karue was spot on regarding the 'self imposed pressure' and importance of playing without the pressure... I think that just happened at the very last point with a 27 shot rally and finishing off with a winner. Great lesson to learn from this video. Kudos to both players... 😊👍🏽👍🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽

    Awesome content man. The close-up of the pro player gives you a great perspective of the quality and what he's doing. On the other hand, you could also show a close-up of the amateur player to see the contrast and to assess what you are doing wrong.
