I thought the same thing and came to comment! That one shot showed an entirely new level of improvement and skill from Winston. It's there. Comes from playing and watching other good players so often.
I actually disagree, but it is a great shot nonetheless. He is tight, close to his body, and using his strength, not fluidity, to hit off his back foot. Narrowish stance too. The good: he uses his legs to get low and drive through the ball. There’s not a bit of hesitation in the stroke. Clean winner off a ball that most of us would want to just get back over the net. The way that it’s a great shot is how aggressively he turns on it. It’s a very confident stroke given that it’s an improvised winner. Any of us would be happy to hit that shot in a live point.
What a good set! Seeing how good Makenna is, despite just coming back from injury, makes me wonder why some regular people think they can take a set off Pegula 😭😭
@@marcvandersnoek2642 one doesn't need to be better to understand someone else's level. of course she's better than 99,9% of the population but she's not playing us, isn't she? she's playing other pros who, unfortunately, are simply better than her.
Wow Winston, some serious ball bangin' here. Really enjoyed how you upped your level and got 3 out of it. That's not a joke. Makenna is...well...incredible. All the best for her in the future. Keep it up Winston! M
That was fun to watch. Winston played well overall and had a nice 3-game streak in there when Makenna seemed to lose some rhythm and timing, and as she said, because the pace was slower than what she was used to. You can see the pro level shots from Makenna. And, she is a certainly a nice person. Thanks guys.
It felt like at 4-0 up McKenna took her foot off of the gas. Smart to protect her knee! Slippery public courts are terrible. I enjoyed her game a lot. Will be following her career/climb.
Winston, bro, you're game just gets better and better. A year ago, you would've got smoked by her. but you've improved so much. All the best to Makenna as she works her way back. I really admire her game, she hits a very nice ball. Would love to know where she sees herself in terms of her ranking by mid-season and by end of year. Either way, best of luck Makenna!
Well done in this set, especially with how much her tools were shining early on. You dropped my jaw again with that crosscourt backhand -> backhand dtl winner in the sixth game. But yeah, she mostly used her aggression to great success, and it was pleasant to watch. Thanks for the video.
Hey Winston, first off, big fan!!! I've been watching your content for about a year now and I'm very thankful for you because your videos really helped be become a better tennis player and make Varsity at my school. Second off, I noticed when you play, you don't move your feet as much as you need to, If you start split stepping, being lighter on your feet, and lift your feet higher, you could definitely become a beast!!!
I loved the 4th point of the 9th game, when Winston gives a smirky head gesture when Makenna SLAPS! his 2nd serve cross court, for a Winner. I would have done the same. ha ha
Players like Makenna is why I love tennis so much. Most tennis players are such good human beings. I have a great matchup video for you Winston. Makenna vs. your prior guest Amy Zhu would be fun to watch. Btw Winston, your game is really good and consistent now.
Amazing care and positivity all round and excellent hitting. Having had a ACL I cannot imagine how hard that is on a pro. Just fantastic in every way and good luck on the tour to Mackenna.
Papa Jones former world #1 in doubles, Mama Jones career high WTA #41 in singles. Good genes, nice and humble people, not surprised Makenna is the same as an adult. Makenna's grandma was once my boss ;)
Yes! Kelly Jones super humble and great guy. I did a strength & conditioning course with him some years back. Great to see Makenna continuing to play after having a good career at UNC!
Great video, and an important message under the surface too. Makenna is ranked 419 in the world currently, and you still lost, which is totally okay! Like, what’s wrong with that, she’s still a literal pro, I’d be so proud to get some games off of her and ask her questions about strategy and things like that!!! And this is me speaking as a guy myself who is pretty good at tennis as well (although not quite to your level😅). But it just sucks to watch highlights from the current top pros or vintage stuff with the Williams sisters or Steffi and have people going “this is so slow” or “my high school teammates can beat her” and “no equal pay” and blah blah blah. First of all, just enjoy watching great tennis, it’s fun to watch no matter who is playing!!! Second off, yeah, good content here, I’m always down for spreading truth😉
Winston is a strong rec player and you can just see what the ~3 UTR gap looks like here. She can attack on most of his rally balls - it’s just a matter of when and how. Good luck, Makenna!
yea if Winston played with a chip on his shoulder he would be much better..he is too nice which is problem in competitive sports...can be a nice guy off the court but a beast inside...main part of tennis is Aggression and confidence i dont see that in Winston...Tennis equal parts mental and physical...
Ha! In the first couple it was looking like you might not get any games, she’s such a sharp shooter! But you raised your level a bit and she probably adjusted too much re: pace. She said she’s a patient player and yet lost points where one more rally ball would’ve finished you. Good match to watch. Well done!
This feels like playing against my coach, no matter how hard i think i hit the ball from the base line , he will occasionally hit a drop shot that so looks so easy for him to pull.
I was around tour players and that type and once in awhile they would deign to hit with me but what I really remember against one was that the ball was constantly coming back with not much time to prepare ! Totally totally exhausting to play like that ! And that was just a few points! Tennis hardest sport physically I ever played!!
So interesting to see the difference between pro's and high level D1 players compared to us mere mortals. The high level players are so active on their feet, their shot tolerance is so high and their ability to redirect big pressure seems so easy for them but so difficult for us. Add those qualities to amazing consistency and you can appreciate the pro level. Makenna, coming off injury and rust in her game is still playing in the "matrix". Hope to see her climb the rankings.
MEP gone? What do you mean? He was recently on (the now defunct) Real Tennis channel. And I assume he's still playing tons of tennis where he lives (in Atlanta, GA I believe).
Hey Winston great groundies for a rec player! Very clean lots of improvement on footwork I think though your serve could benefit from moving to pinpoint stance esp. second serve to get more power .. maybe something you can experiment with if you haven’t already
Fun hitting, Makenna can rip it, dang!! Question Winston are you split stepping just a tad late? I feel like you could have gotten to some of those out wides?
Hi Winston, it would be cool if you do a new series of challenging lower ranked professionals, ranked around 2-3000? and go up the ladder and eventually reach sinner! that would be fun to watch
She hit a lot of winners that there was nothing you could do about. At first, I thought she was going to knock him out 6-0, but Winston hung around and just kept getting the balls back and it paid off in him winning some games.
Makenna is awesome. Wishing her all the best on her way up the rankings! Sidenote: Remember when men thought they could take a game/set off Serena?? What a joke.
Yeah the fact non tennis players think they could even rerun a serve let alone WIN a point is wild. But remember these guys think they’d win in a hand to hand fight against a bear, so they’re not very bright.
Great job on the video my friend. I would suggest you start trying to aim your serves, especially your first serve and you have the ability to hit wide out to the backhand side, it’s not pace my dude, it’s placement. Thank you for posting this video and everyone have a great New Year.
seems her forehand not only fast but the spin is like almost sidespin or something as it skids even faster after bounce. It doesnt bounce that high, not that thats bad but it forces you to do your strokes with less prep and adjusting timing. I would have given her a bunch of slices the last super good female player i played had same strokes she was bullying me af then i found slicing threw her off. idk could be wrong
I’m curious, 10:57 did he intentionally give the ball back to her for sportsmanship because her previous shot was constrained by the limited space available around the court?
You did not bad at all Winston. Against a former top 250 player that was a good set. The only comments I'll make is that you were regularly getting flat footed, try and attack your opponents second serves, and do your best to go a bit bigger on your serve.
on every level of play, women's tennis is about same speed, what differs is the spin. so i also have to adjust everytime as the ball really comes back faster on shots you would not expect, as the play "more flat" over the net, and men typically do not play those shots and when they play it, its rather short and sliced.
13:13 that is the best cc bh I've ever seen Winston hit, that was so clean, even Karue would be proud of that one
What a shot. Had to generate your own pace too. Very high level execution.
I thought the same thing and came to comment! That one shot showed an entirely new level of improvement and skill from Winston. It's there. Comes from playing and watching other good players so often.

even 9:42 pair of backhands was lovely!
Rooting for Makenna to make her way back up the rankings! Very likable person
She seems really fun to play with. Good to see that her ACL seems to have recovered as she's moving well. 👍
She is so humble!! Good to see that. Rooting for her to climb the rankings

Jw, what do you mean by “lift your feet higher”? Thanks!
He probably means on his toes more. Its much easier to move laterally when you are on your toes and not flat footed
Well played, Winston! Driving those balls on the rise helped a lot! You hit some great shots! I love the surprise S&V on game points.
Love Makenna’s forehand swing. So smooth.
“Patient-aggressive”. About right! Her ball placement is exceptional. I think she raised your game Winston…nice shots!
