Thank you so much for this explainer. I'm pretty decent with a wrench I do most jobs on all my cars and many motorcycles. But I've never dared to work on differentials (BMW bikes have them), but now I understand how to adjust the settings and finally a good explanation of the pattern. When I do this job, I feel I can finally do it myself, or supervise it. I live in Central America, and people are not very precision oriented here, I have to supervise all my jobs in their shops or they don't have my business.
Thank you so much!
Daryl, that was a fantastic video. Very informative. I'm going to give it a shot. Nitro 4.88 in my 4runner diffs. Thanks
you should do a video of the front clamshell diff
Okay so I can't do this lmao
You do a great job explaining things, hope to see more diy how to vids!
Great info! I have all new bearings, gears and seals coming for my Yota next week so this will be very helpful!
I use Eaton rebuild manuals for heavy duty truck rear ends they explain it very well and have good photos ..
You are the man.. lots of patience which I’m not good at.
Those are calipers and they should be calibrated properly. It is not a micrometer. Get a good set of Mititoyo calipers for this.
Those are calipers, not micrometers!
Gonna try it out. If I fail. I take it to a mechanic that’ll get em done in a few hours 😂
Do it! You really have to try to mess it up. Most of the replacments come with really good directions. Just take your time and keep things really clean a pice of sand can give you hell if it gets between the ring gear a carrier.
excellent content man wow
can you please list all the name of the tools (excluding sockets) that you used to properly install/measure the mesh and all. Thanks.
Awesome video. Thank you. I’m gonna regear my 91 Land Cruiser that is on 33’s with 4:88’s. You have any instruction vids for that?
We do not. You can probably find videos for that elsewhere.
Awesome video.
Micrometers ??? Calipers is the correct name for the tool.
vernier
tomato tomAto
Thanks for this fantastic video!
that's a vernier caliper, not a micrometer.
Yes! You are Absolutely Correct, I was looking for this comment.
So when shimming the pinion in and out I will have to disassemble and re assemble the whole thing again to shim it?
On most designs, yes. This is where setup bearings can come in handy.
I don’t know shit about this. Watched the whole thing.
Calipers. Not micrometer
This helped a lot thanks man!
Great explanation!
Nice! Thanks for the info!
I’m assuming this voids powertrain warranty? Fine with me after the 60k mark haha
How did you set the preloaded on you carrier bearing
What is the tool brand/ model for the double sided differential spanner pin wrench!
You mentioned cleaning well prior to reinstall. Do you have to clean up the marking compound? I bet that would attract dirt and dust during setup.
The marker Does not need to be cleaned, but he sure used a lot.
How much end play should there be in the pinion gear when you install it before the ring gear is installed?
My question is can you use the old pinion bearing to set it up ,,so in case of pressing on and off of bearing you don’t damage the new bearings, maybe even grind them out a little to where they slide on and off of the pinion gear and using a solid spacer too
Yes, but sometimes switching to new bearings on final install will change the pattern slightly. I've never had it be so bad it's not OK, but still possible.
@@Victory4x4 man,,thanks for the reply,,I am going to attempt this myself,,I am going with the solid spacer and I will not install the seal until I have it at correct pinion depth,,
can't you just remember heal/toe as the orientation for the pinion gear to "step" onto the ring gear?
Great video 👍🏻
I got 4.88 nitro gears installed by a reputable shop on my Tacoma 2017 TRD offroad and when feathering the gas at 55-70 mph on the highway I hear a very slight whine/howl. It’s not very loud but it’s there. I did the 500 mile break in period correctly and took it very easy. I have changed the oil as well. Should I be worried?
The Nitro Gears are high quality gears so the noise is likely that the pinion depth was set just a tad too deep or shallow. No biggie. The high spots will wear even with some drive time and it should quiet up. Check the oil for particles and change as needed. ZUK gearinstallsdotcom
I have a (currently) stock 2019 Tacoma TRD Off Road and I get a whine/howl between 50-60 when letting off the gas/coasting, dealer said it is a know issue, something with a body mount and driveline angle, and Toyota is working on figuring it out.
What do u recommend in gearing for a 2002 Toyota 4runner tht will run 275's possibly 285's,,,also would a tie rod upgrade be necessary for the front or can stock handle 33 in tires??? Thank you in advance!
I live near tacoma Washington. Where would you recommend for the install?
check CL, there are a few guys in the area that do yota gears out of their garage. Bull built diffs is a little shop over in enumclaw that seems reasonable but i haven't worked with them personally.
Bull Built for sure. Nils is an awesome guy and will treat you right. I know this is a 3 month old comment but just wanted to give Nils another shout out.
What is better or difference between nitro 4.88 and nitro 5.29 is it preference or does one do better than the other?
5.29 is a lower gear ratio than 4.88 that mean your engine will be revving at a higher RPM at highway speeds than the 4.88. Tire size like a 35 would nessessitate a 5.29 ratio more than say a 31.5 inch tire. You could get the 4.88 and be happy with it but if you had 35 inch tires the 4.88 might not be low enough to make any difference than the stock gears
Does a gear change affect the factory warranty?
All that warranty means is you have to bring it to the dealer to get it worked on. Screw that. Do it yourself and screw the factory warranty ☺️
I have a 2019 Toyota Tacoma with 33 off road tires and it’s a 6 speed manuals. What gear should I change to 4.88 or 5.29?
Probably 4.88s for 33's.
If you don't have to much weight on the truck like armor bumpers roof top tents you just have 33s 4.88 perfect lots of weight and gear should go with 5.29
I think the manuals come with 4.88?
🤯🤯🤯😵💫😵💫😵😵😵
Where can i find nitro gear 4.88 for my 1994 toyota pickup 22RE? Please comment the link!🙏
Since you’re running 35’s would you still run 4.88’s on 285/70/75 (32.8) or 4.56’s. I will be supercharged at some point...
Tough call. If you have the auto you already have 3.90's. I don't know that I would spend the money for the jump to 4.56 with 32's. I think I'd drive it first with the stock gears.
Captndarty I got 35 inch tires on my fj cruiser and I have 3.73 gear
Isaac Perez But you have a 4.0 which makes the same torque as the 3.5L 800 rpms lower....
@@Captndarty good call
Israel Rodriguez I ended up doing 4:88’s with 33’s. Absolutely perfect combo.
Do you recommend replacing all the ring gear bolts during the install?
It's always a good idea if they are available since you are already in there. In many instances, these are not "torque to yield bolts," so they can get re-used safely.
hello victory4x4 I have a 2020 Toyota Tacoma with 35" off road tires and it is a 6 speed automatic. It is a good idea to change to 4:88 if so because?
5.29 will work better for you on that particular truck .
Does all of this go for diesels also?
Yes
I’m in Atlanta , Georgia. Anyone recommend where I can get regear for a 2019 Tacoma?
An Tran also interested.
Be careful with that loctite throwing off values.
Does any Toyota wizz here know if there’s a locking diff for a 2019 tacoma 4 cylinder. I’m having a hard time finding out if it’s a 8.4” diff.
Toyota remove 3rd member easy much cheaper can take it to a shop charge a few hundred to do the labor Toyota was smart .
so I'm not doing it wrong, it really is just a difficult tedious pain in the ass.
I hate my 3.5 Tacoma - 4.0 Tacoma was 3 times better low key
Absolutely nothing wrong with the 3.5. Engine has got loads of proper power. The truck is geared wrong from the factory. A regear will clear all that up. If you don’t own a third gen then you wouldn’t know that so just keep on walking.
@Mr. Morningstar is it possible to re gear the 2.7l even if its a 2wd?
good info but get a cheap camera stand.
