Amana / Maytag Washer Not Spinning - How to Test, Replace and Bypass the Lid Switch

  • If you have an Amana or Maytag washer that is not spinning the lid switch may be broken and needs replaced. In this video I show you how to test, remove and replace the switch to so your washer will spin again.
One more thing in this video is if you do not want to wait for the new part to arrive and you need to get some laundry done, I show you how to bypass the lid switch.
Bypassing the lid switch is dangerous, so keep that in mind. The washer will not stop spinning when you open the lid. You will have to push the timer knob in to get it to stop. Other than that the machine will operate perfectly normal.
Thanks for taking the time to watch my video. If you are not Subscribed to my RUclips Channel, go ahead and do that now!
Make sure you leave some comments - I want to hear from you guys.

THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I opened my washer and found it full of water. Your video was the second one I watched and it solved my problem. My lid has some movement in it due to being older and has some rust. After seeing how you removed the switch, I put my hand up under the lid and made sure the metal arm was slotting in where it should, and voila! It was connecting correctly. You saved me a repair bill!Thank you again.

Thank you. My washer was loaded when it decided not to work. My son told me that it was working/washing oddly - like when the lid was open - a couple of days ago. So when my husband was looking at machine he thought it could be the switch. I jumped on youtube so I could get help to help him. Bypassed the switch and it worked. The only thing that was hard was locating the two philip head screws since it is full with water and up against a wall. Maybe a picture of where to find those two screws would be helpful. Again, thank you. :)

I got a washer with this problem. I found that I like this type of switch because you can actually fix it. I removed the cover and cleaned the contacts that were oxidized. Contacts are very easy to remove and put back in. Putting the switch back into place, it was still not actuating. I found that the actuating arm attached to the washer's lid was not depressing the switch far enough to actuate it. So I bent the arm to hit a little lower and now the washer is working as it should.

So I took the cover off my Maytag A209 and found the two wires I thought I needed to connect together. This washer has individual wires that plug in. I connected them together and the washing machine started working. What I can't figure out is why it still cuts off when I lift the lid. I thought I bypassed the lid switch. I'm really puzzled.

Okay on my Amana washer the lid lock switch when you walk up to the washing machine is right there in the front and it's saying if the lights pay and lid lock lid lock flashing and the waters for they won't let it do nothing because the the lid locks not working if opening and shutting and it won't let it spin due to that reason so do I still fix it like where you're taking yours apart at since mine opens and locks in the front they're not on the side or in the back

My washer lid switch is towards the front right corner, do I still need to remove the panel where the dials are at? I did noticed that after I load my laundry in the tub, I have to lift the cover up a little ways n let it drop for the water to start its fill. The I went to check my laundry n my clothes were somewhat soaked. I put it on drain/spin, checked it after a while n nothing was happening. I lifted the the lid a bit n dropped it, still nothing happened. So I opened the lid again n played with the lever on the switch n for a second or two, it tried to spin then stopped. The lever was very loose n it's mounted on the lid with a nut holding it in place. How could I bypass this? I looked closely, but saw no wires connected to it, though it does look like the part u mentioned we would be replacing. I've left my clothes on a basket to air out, but it's certainly wet. I'm watching ur video to prepare how to approach my issue upon returning home after duty to resolve this problem, a quick fix will suffice at this time. A pop up appeared during ur video, will this be u n if so, do u have the part I need to replace n how much? I'd greatly appreciate a response from u sooner than later n if u do sell parts, I'd gladly tell my friends n family where to buy all their washer parts online. Here is my email Jorgendahouse@gmail.com. Ur video, step-by-step instructions are easy to follow n comprehend. Thanks for sharing ur knowledge with us, u spoke slowly on "how to" n I got confidence to try to help myself. GOD Bless U! Hope to hear from U soon!

Hello, I am having problems with my whirlpool 10 years old washing machine. It fills, it agitates, it drains, but it won't spin. I have flipped it on the front, checked the coupler, it spins the shaft; check the clutch, it feels hard to the spinning by hand; could it be the lid switch? I checked on the multimeter, on the ohms it doesn't read anything. If you know the sequence of operation of the washer you only need one switch. A simple toggle switch works great. Here's how.
The white and blue wire, connect together on one terminal of the toggle switch, lid closed. The red wire connect to the other terminal on the toggle switch.
Washer sequence, is sensing lid locks, turn toggle on. The next stage is the washer will unlock the lid, the lid lock led will flash, turn toggle switch off. You will then hear a click, turn toggle back on, lid locked. Works great!
Cap the yellow wire you don't need it. I looked everywhere and I tried everything. This really works!!

How many people did not replace the switch after your video?
