Yanushka Gunawardena hey mate, what weight in glory did he have a world championship? I thought he fought Nicky holtzen for it and lost? Who did he beat for it, Raymond Daniels?
Your a genius. Thank you for your content. I don't think almost anyone understands how incredible it is to have a 5x (and more) world kickboxing champion like yourself and Vargas actually talk through striking. I mean I like the Ramsey Dewey, FightTips, KwokKicker etc but you Vargas are way, way, way, way waaaaay, beyond them in terms of (at least) striking skill.
Hey Andy, You also might be interested to know that it's effective not just by damaging the calf! The "Peroneal Nerve" is very superficial (close to skin) and wraps from the front to the back at around the level of the knee. This nerve controls the Tibialis Anterior muscle, which is what allows you to raise the top of your foot towards your shin. When you target the nerve enough you impede that muscles ability to raise the foot, which can result in "foot drop" where it looks like the foot is glued to the floor when someone goes to step. This can be seen in the Sean O'malley fight, where you see him twist his ankle because his foot doesn't dorsiflex as he attempts to take a step. Cheers!
Joe's unique ability is explaining and demonstration perfectly at the same time. Basically he can teach everything, namely auto repairs, lifestyle, cooking, home improvement, needle work, Italian, Mathematics, etc., etc.
Very well explained also if I don't agree with the first point (not necessary to be closer for the regular low kick than the calf one). I hope many more people will follow u. Peace
Around 305 mark it mentions how to block the calf kick. Watch “goat hoost legendary leg kicks at the 230 mark roughly but around 310 it mentions his his check was unique to the tradional one for leg kicks and calf kicks by just simply pulling his heel back instead of lifting giving them his knee creating the Anderson Silva effect, have never seen anyone mention it very effective technique to stop then but have only seen him use it
Lol I have long legs and always did those low kicks they could never hit me. A 2nd benefit is that your leg foot is lower so it is harder to grab and catch you leg in a lock.
man. Great details on this becoming so prevalent in MMA this past year( especially) . Who else wonders at fact that Conor Mcgregor had all those 2020 months off due to pandemic but didn't once enter a Google search on one of his gold-plated, monogrammed iPads of, " recent, popular strikes in MMA fighting" as pre-prep for UFC257 ? He could go to his coach & say ," lets make sure Dustin doesn't take my lead leg away from me w/ this move that's now more prevalent than it was during my past 4 fights" I guess hindsight is 20/20 but he will darn sure know to not let 3 or 4 of those make it thru by anyone else again . Because , these bloody calf chops are wicked effective if unchecked.
Hey coach Joe I have a question. If your opponent has a side stance and likes to throw the jab as a counter would you just slip to the inside even if your a southpaw?
if the calf kick is strong and the opponent turns the leg you going to get a really hard check shin to shin so much so you can break your leg which is something to keep in mind
Master can you tell me what to do or prepared before getting into te ring I forget everything that I learned because of nervousness n should I warm up before get in the ring...
You should have a good swear going into the ring with your muscles warmed up and you're lungs warmed up and prepared for battle. The reason most people forget is lack of QUALITY sparring and 2) is because most people have a huge disparity between training technique and sparring with no bridge in-between. The bridge is HIGH QUALITY DRILLING and lots of it especially with a good patner. Think of "Dutch Drills" or a lot of catch and return drills going back and forth done as perfect as possible. Good luck and many blessings on your journey brother.
That always happens when your a beginner, because so nervous and scared of getting hit, that you tense up and don’t relax and forget all the techniques that you know, then afterwards you think why didn’t I use that kick or that punch it’s annoying, but after few sparring sessions and with experience learn to just relax and keep calm and everything flows
Stance difference. MT & KB is mostly rear leg heavy, thus the damage is not as high as in MMA with 50/50 on both feet (more balanced for takedown defense). Besides, they used to checking kicks more than in MMA. (Doesnt have to worry about takedowns).
Syaza Nayla appreciate you taking the time to respond my friend. I also would love to master this technique as it’s such a devastating technique when used correctly.

Huh. I had the range backwards. Shouldn't the quad kick be longer range, because the quads are more in line with the hip? For the same reason that when you punch up or down, your range goes down slightly. I'm all confused lol
It's largely because you can use your instep for a calf kick more effectively, and because the lower leg is further forward than the thigh, so despite it going "down" the target is actually closer, unlike a punch
@@VinylUnboxingsthanks! yeah I looked in a mirror in my stance and I went "oh. Duh. The leg is like 10 miles in front of the body." Lol. I'm still surprised people risk spamming kicks like that. Foot bone so smol, shin so thicc
Like he said works better against a bladed stance and a front foot fighter. If the stance isn't bladed and they are checking we'll it's gone be shin to shin 🤢

Also, the best Calf Kickers in MMA are all wrestlers.

THE best kickboxing breakdowns on the internet. You articulate the techniques so well. Cheers Joe!
High production value with world class coaching makes this easily the best combat sports channel on RUclips. A true gem!
After McGregor vs porier 2. Now i understand what really happened. Thanks.

Who’s here after that McGregor fight
Crystal clear explanation. Your channel has become an encyclopedia for strikers. 👍
These vids are such high quality and we all appreciate them, thanks joe
Thank you coach! 🙏🏻
Max Halloway, Sean O'malley and now Conor Mcgregor, all losing fights to the calf kick. It's the biggest game changer in mma right now.
Adesanaya also destroyed Costa with that kick alone.
Great video asual always the best tips and breakdowns from joe, after seeing Anderson Silva leg break always thought was better to attack the calf’s,
thanks Joe your the man you have one of the most underated chanels on youtube
Only underrated by the casuals

O malley v Vera brought me here
This was so well said omg
Great information always very technical and effective.
Best low kicker in the business.
Thank you.
I normally move back and switch stances so if someone tries to kick I move backwards and go from Orthodox to Southpaw to dodge the kick
Haha, i enjoy how you show your merch almost as much as the calf kick. Great video!

why can you not check kick with bottom foot or or counterstrike inside calf of offensive kicker like you would to perry a jab or covering on a hook?
should we use this in kb?

How come they dont throw calf kicks in MT and kickboxing? Is it the range differences

who's here after the conor vs dustin 2?
Will we start seeing these in kickboxing and muaythai as well? Or are they already being used
Already known and used in muay thai

Is calf kick is legal in kick boxing?
yes
Anyone know why they aren’t used nearly as much in kickboxing and Muay Thai?

Why don’t mauy thai guys use this ?
It's less effective since you don't have to worry about take downs and the fighters there are actually good at checking kicks.
Like he said works better against a bladed stance and a front foot fighter. If the stance isn't bladed and they are checking we'll it's gone be shin to shin 🤢
my sparring partners will hate me :)
so basically the calf kick is a cheat code
I think people were just scared of snapping there leg like Anderson silver so they started going under the knee
