Just wanted to say that I love your channel, found it as I was coincidentally completing some of the games you've covered (FEAR, dead space, max payne, thief, etc.) and appreciate how watchable your content is
"I HAD A DREAM OF MY WIFE, SHE WAS DEAD. BUT IT WAS ALRIGHT" i truly love James McCaffrey his voice acting is just perfection. Great review!! . . . . . also that clip of Alexandra (Nice)
I prefer the 1st but I completely understand why many people like the 2nd one more. I liked the bullet time system, grittier graphics, and how you really had to plan how to enter a room in the 1st
Man, that cello really takes me back. The choir at the end hits like a truck, makes the theme so much better. Some time back I would've said that Max Payne 3 is the game to play these days, because of the punchy combat, even if it lacks in almost all other aspects compared to the previous ones. Now I'm not so sure any more, having seen how this one plays again, and remembering how often the third entry takes control away from you with constant unskippable cutscenes, they really drag on. Nice video as always! (Edit: No mention of Late Goodbye in this vid, what's that about? haha)
Love your work, man, keep it up! Also, I've gotta mention, I noticed you keep saying "for better lack of a term" or a similar combination, but it's really "for lack of a better term" - just a pet peeve.
Can someone tell why Max Payne 2 never saw a re-release on PSN? Seriously, it drives me nuts that I can play 1 and 3, but not 2. Especially hearing how good 2 is.
The PS2 port of Max Payne 2 is extremely rough and it's no way to enjoy this masterpiece. The PS2 port of the first game is pretty decent but 2 pretty much sucks. I am surprised that Rockstar never re-released 2 on PSN, they are usually good at cashing in on their old stuff but perhaps in this case, they looked back and thought better of it. The right call though, the PS2 port just isn't worth bothering with and considering the PC can run on a potato these days, that's clearly the way to go.
@@DinoDave150 I've heard the Xbox version is better but I can't say that definitively because I have not played it myself. Either that or just wait for the remakes and see how they are? They're coming to consoles.
I feel like Max Payne 2 is the best title in the trilogy. This is saying something because all three games are some of the best third-person shooters of all time.
Thanks, your video on the first game made me get into the series a month and a half ago. The series is one of my favorites now. I think I like 2 the most. I wouldn’t recommend playing these games in console, they don’t run too well.
It's like one of those decisions that you have to make that you don't have to make.. and you don't mind sitting around trying to make it because you know that at this point you're just adding numbers and they're both adding to something good.. and if anything leads to a greater appreciation of the parts that you hadn't thought about in one sense or another.. this is like a rare rare situation for video game sequels, I think a lot of it had to do with it coming out as quickly as it did after the first one as well.. you put four or five years behind your belt, that's enough time for enthusiastic revelry to turn into bitter member berries.. and that's providing that the member berries aren't rotten to begin with, still going to eat them either way, if anything with more vitriol if they are rotten cuz you know these berries have gone downhill since the first one. I think that last segment's more tilted towards people that really didn't like the third entry, and one of the reasons that I did was because it actually did what the second one did as well.. iterated, innovated and held a line of quality.. despite some notable exceptions in cutscene design that if it wasn't for the inherent core of the gameplay and the game and all the other things would have been bad enough alone to make me never touch it.. except, it did all those things.. in the finest tradition of the Max Payne series.. and if the price you had to pay was JJ Abrams trying to max out his tamagotchi while operating a camera and then having the footage edited by William s Burroughs he thought he was putting together another naked lunch.. I mean you know.. it almost works in spite of itself LOL. It's one of those things where it truly was a minor regression and just holistically showed that you could remove the signature plot delivery, and still deliver a Max Payne game, because it had more going for it.. When it comes to the first or the second one.. there's certain atmospheric elements that both have that the other doesn't and that's both in a positive light and in some cases negative, when it comes to the gameplay there's massive improvements in the second mechanically, but a tighter level design that focuses more towards narrative and the general trend of production value versus extended gameplay and yet while both are incredibly repetitious.. they focus on the strengths where they need to focus on them in order for that to be something you genuinely want to repeat over and over, and this is where the second one I think really clinches it because it went towards that immersive Sim in a shooter format, I used to call it tactical but I guess I can't anymore.. basically adding the ability to do more things and thus become more immersive.. something the third one took to heart. I mean I could I could go on but I think that's what you're doing in the video anyways, you got this LOL... I guess I never really put the two juxtaposed before.. it never really occurred to me I guess.. and I never really compared the third one either, so much is that I just defend the third one for doing the right things the right way in all the ways that matter for a video game more than anything and for this particular series... Where character and narrative matter just as much as the presentation.. but nothing takes a priority, even if it does shift focus in some cases. That's kind of where I'm in a bit of a weird quasi what about the remaster or remake.. if it's in the hands of remedy then I'm not terribly worried, cuz whenever it comes to one of their babies that you know they're going to put their heart and soul into it.. at the same time every successive Max Payne game has been an improvement on the last so whenever I hear a remake I hear member berries trying to start a Time loop.. that that kind of is one thing that Max Payne isn't.
I absolutely love both of the first two games. Both have their own feel to the game play. I don't think that the fact that despite it being a sequel mp2 is held on the same level as the previous game means a lack of improvement but rather just how good both games are. They reach the peak of human enjoyment so to speak. Mp2 is the first game that I played again imidietly after ending my first run, which I attribute to fantastic story but also the shorter completion time (guess the length isn't all that bad after all). Besides length of a game really shouldn't be a factor for whether the game is good or not, you can have lots of filler that bores you, Max is so well written and so good to play I'd hold it's quality over quantity. Also I'm not really a fan of romances but the one written by Sam manages to transcend this. They are just so good together! We feel bad for Max and we want him to be happy, that was why I was happily surprised when I finished on the highest difficulty. Too bad Rockstar retconed it or I guess didn't confirm it, but I don't like their game anyway. The TV shows were so good, I always stopped to watch them, especially "adres unknown". Sam Lake used his wacky faces to his advantage when making it. The fun house was super fun to traverse, it's so fun I wished it were real. If "adress unknown" were a real TV show written by Sam I'd pay to see it! Sorry for my rant, great video as always! It's nice confirmation bias for my brain, I have watched so many reviews of these games but still do it anyway. At least this one stands out by how short (not 2 hour essay) and well written it is.
An interesting detail I don't see many notice (I myself didn't until just now actually) the scene where Max kills Winterson, Mona doesn't reach for her gun until Winterson turns her gun on Max. She was going to risk getting herself shot to save him, realizing Winterson is there to kill him too. However, before she gets the chance to do so Max does the deed instead.
Max Payne 2, just the way I like it. Short and sweet. No multiplayer. No day 1 DLC. No microtransaction. No games-as-a-service. No videogame road map. What you bought on release date was the "definitive edition". 🏆
I loved Max Payne 1 and 2, but I didn't care for the side character body count of 2. A confrontation between Alfred and Vlad is cool, but the mentor thing felt a bit forced. Maybe they could've had you choose who you side with, have the canon ending be siding with Vlad, and the next game starts with Max and Vlad working together until inevitable betrayal
@Ryan Stoney for me max doesn't lose mona. The dead on arrival ending where she lives is canon for me. But I agree he can't save woman around him...he is like bond in that way. Like all the bad things in his life it started with the death of women.
Max Payne 2 The Fall Of Max Payne will always be my favorite game of all time!!! I love everything about it! The Story, The Gameplay, The Writing, The Soundtrack, The Voice Acting! Everything is top Notch In My Opinion!! 👌👌👌
I haven't touched any of the Max Payne games. I only briefly played 3 and watch the Mark Wahlberg film. I can't say I'm an avid fan of Max Payne. But with the remakes coming out and Remedy coming back to the series, I figured it's about time I scooped up those games and played them. With Rockstar games, I think their best work is Red Dead Redemption. But that's the only game by them I've played. So it'd be nice to see them remaster that game. I'm actually glad you mentioned MGS in the video because I was going to recommend you check that series out and play them. You seem to have played them. That actually be the perfect series for you to cover. You might have to start with the MSX 8 bit games though because that's where Metal gear started. The NES ports aren't that good. But I'd argue that both NES and MSX haven't aged well. There are also two versions of MGS1. The PlayStation original which is an all time classic. And there's the GameCube version titled The Twin Snakes. If you want an updated version, that's it. But don't expect it to be as good as the original. It has alot of problems working against. It takes MGS2'S engine and gameplay and applies it to MGS1 levels. Problem here is the areas weren't redesigned around the modernized gameplay and it nerfed the game. FPS mode does that. And who can forget about them matrix style cutscenes? It's ultimately a pick your preference. But it's there if you want a more gamey version of MGS1. I'd honestly like to hear your opinion on both and which version you prefer.
Hooray! In the tirade of Max Payne retrospectives I think you're actually the first one to get all of the elements of the aspect ratio and perspective and fov right! Well done sir well done! It's a low bar but dude honestly I swear there's a shrink ray on the other side of it because nobody gets over it... For this title in particular, well this title and half-life's view model that always ends up cropped cuz nobody bothers to set that fov with the regular fov for 16x9 but anyhow.. you sir have stepped over the bar! I'm not actually being sarcastic on that one towards you, I'm genuinely happy like.. there's just a handful of games that for some reason nobody can manage to get right and they do this like weird amalgam of of widescreen fixes that fixed some parts of it sort of LOL.. this one has always gotten the very short end of the very squishy stick for some reason.. but not only did you get the basics you got the whole thing, and you kept the panels in 4x3.. ain't that ain't that a site to behold. You must be old like me and still remember when things were in the correct aspect ratio as a feature normally... And crop and transform was just a normal everyday thing that you did in video editing, in the rare cases when you would have to because it would usually take care of it automatically.. 10 years ago those were the days LOL.
@@INFILTR8US I try I do, Google doesn't always agree with me.. for instance it took away my ellipses about a year ago now I only get two dots.. I don't know what two dots are but it's not an ellipses oh sometimes it does fuck with me though wait no nope it took them away LOL it's always fun in real time when it changes something right as you hit send, but nobody's going to read any of these things anyways so I don't even bother half the time... I worried way more about just getting cadence down.. if I really wanted things to be legible it would be far far too long for anybody to actually read, which it usually is anyways.
I actually got to play 2 for the first time a few years ago, and I felt like it held up pretty well. I really enjoyed it. I went back and tried 1 again-I'm old enough to have played it closer to when it came out-and I felt like I was feeling the game's age. Maybe because I enjoyed my first time with MP2 better than my my second time with MP1, but that might be why I choose 2 as my preferred. Both games had some of the coolest stylistic storytelling that I've played in a game, and I feel like Rockstar still feels something in this IP because the internet has never completely forgotten Max, and his noir tale of murder and tragedy is always a spectacle worth a playthrough.
The first game has many cheap sections and cheap deaths :/ still an amazing first game that laid the foundations but it's so frustrating to play. The second game has a much much better story, better gameplay, and more emotion in it.
6:18 this is one of the reasons i prefer the first game(though I still love Max Payne 2 dearly). It's world just had more love and care place into it. You can tell the developers were having fun. Max Payne 1 came off as if it was joking around for the most part but added in a plot to motivate the player(this is especially evident once you read the original script for Max Payne and see it was even more ridiculous)but slick and poetic writing gave it a beautiful flare. Max Payne 2 did the reverse. It took it's plot and characters more seriously(with Sam Lake taking screen writing classes for the sequel) but added jokes and light heartedness to keep in line with the original(which felt more natural).
Been binging your channel since I found it two days ago and I was wondering when this one would come out! My favourite entry in the franchise. It's aged really well imo
Exited for alan wake and the third one! Do you ever plan on trying out the evil within games? Be curious to hear you opinions. Keep up the great work BP!
Gameplay of Max Payne 2 was better but the story of Max Payne 1 was better. Perfect story, perfect ending and was one of the most badass revenge stories ever told. Also Sam Lake's face as Max Payne cannot be replaced. The new face they used didnt fit and Mona Sax newer actress lokked sexy as hell but seems fundamentally different from her Max Payne 1 version, where she looked more playful but a cold badass when she needed to be.
Max Payne 2: Toned Midriff Also I'm glad I'm not the only one unhappy with how the series shifted away from shoot dodge. It was THE mechanic that made the first game as fun as it was. Just moving around on your feet and shooting borderline stationary enemies was not very engaging or cool.
although I love Max Payne 1 I ended LOVING Max Payne 2 the story is so touching and so very 2000s unapologetically what it is and doesn't try to hide with popular tropes at the time. Example you see how intolerable players don't want R* to play as a female in their games YET we played no problems or complaints back then. Damn i miss the old days. Also a very small detail that is a Nod to Max Payne 2 in GTA4 there is a school in broker based off a school IN MAX PAYNE 2 called Brooklyn school for the blind. In GTA4 its called Broker School for the blind and special
I saw that poll but decided not to vote on it. When I saw it, my mind went blank for a second because I never even considered comparing both games and picking one over the other. I just like them both a lot. On a barely related note, I hope Alan Wake 2 is good because the first one is my favorite non-Max Payne game from Remedy.
I keep seeing people say that. But where is the source on this? Not trying to be an a**hole just curious because I thought Remedy's intent was to leave it up to us to decide which ending is canon (hence why they gave us two so we could pick which one we liked better) then Rockstar went in and F'd everything MP2 established up.
This was the first game I played where they said "fuck!", characters kissed and had sex on screen (some nudity as well, especially if you reached Mona in time while taking a shower), and many other things... So I was BLOWN AWAY by it. Also, I can't estimate how many hours I passed playing with the physics engine (dead bodies, objects, grenades, the building with the yellow walkway...) This is still my favorite Max Payne game, followed by 3. The original didn't age so well for me and I kind of didn't like it that much back in the day either. If there ever is a Max Payne 4 I'd love it to be the best from 2 and 3 combined. P.S. I need that freedom to play with the physics engine again!!
Is it ever explained how Mona survived being shot in the last game? Maybe I missed something or it's meant to be vague. I always assumed she was a perfect match for V and it helped her recover
One thing that I should mention is that this series's setting is also very unique. It's a crime thriller, set in modern times. No horror, no sci-fi. It's a surprisingly underused setting in the games industry. The only other 2 big names I can think of using it is Need For Speed and of course Grand Theft Auto, and the only indie I can think of is Hotline Miami.
I hope you'll cover Max Payne 3, it may not have been dome by Remedy and the writing isn't as strong but the gameplay is solid and Max's VA gives a stellar performance.
if she survives it can only be implied that Mona died later in the hospital or in the ambulance ride since in the third game there are scenes that say things to let the player know she is dead
10:19 yeah right, Twin Peaks was a failed comedy, lots of sillines and i thought it would be something dark just like Address Unknown but the truth is that it was a piece of shit

Punctuation. Learn it.
For me it always a bummer that they changed Max' appearance in Max Payne 2. The Sam Lake Max Payne is so iconic.
If this game was just a bit longer, it would be best in the series, no contest!
I'm glad someone else appreciates that ending panel as much as I do
6:18 this is one of the reasons i prefer the first game(though I still love Max Payne 2 dearly).

ASSASIN DAB
ASSASIN DAB 😂👌
Been binging your channel since I found it two days ago and I was wondering when this one would come out! My favourite entry in the franchise. It's aged really well imo
Exited for alan wake and the third one! Do you ever plan on trying out the evil within games? Be curious to hear you opinions. Keep up the great work BP!
I do plan on looking at them at some point.
I loved the first two Max Payne games but the third one not really.
"Sales disappointment"
Gets a remake.
Ah, publishers.
Max Payne 2: Toned Midriff
Also I'm glad I'm not the only one unhappy with how the series shifted away from shoot dodge. It was THE mechanic that made the first game as fun as it was. Just moving around on your feet and shooting borderline stationary enemies was not very engaging or cool.
Great video and RIP James McCaffrey
what a perfect cinematic to start the video on... 3:02 completely shameless
Great work man , what do you plan on reviewing next ?
although I love Max Payne 1 I ended LOVING Max Payne 2 the story is so touching and so very 2000s unapologetically what it is and doesn't try to hide with popular tropes at the time.
Ah, the rosebush scene...still hilarious.
I used to play a lot of this game 3 years back....loved it
I saw that poll but decided not to vote on it. When I saw it, my mind went blank for a second because I never even considered comparing both games and picking one over the other. I just like them both a lot.
On a barely related note, I hope Alan Wake 2 is good because the first one is my favorite non-Max Payne game from Remedy.
Mona survives, if you play on hard mode. It is the canon ending, according to Remedy. Rockstar just dismissed it.
18:30 "It's one of those odd cases of the gameplay clashing with the narrative." If only there was a term for that...
Love your stuff (minus the DSP)!
6:36 anyone else recognized kevin conroy?
Can't wait for the Max Payne 2 remake.
I was sad when Max payne wife and only daughter died very sad story😢😢😢
First 2 games are classic. I'm sure the 3rd is great too, just havent got around to playing it yet.
God damn the story on this one is so much better
all the max payne games are perfect but the 3rd game is my favorite cause it has the best shooting in any game ever but all the games are really good.
how do i get controller support on the steam verson
Is it ever explained how Mona survived being shot in the last game? Maybe I missed something or it's meant to be vague. I always assumed she was a perfect match for V and it helped her recover
3:10 lmao
It would seem every time a game features a slow down time button people fucking love it. What's the deal with that?
this was funny, good job broski
5:45 "For better lack of a term" Sloppy writing there, man. It's "for lack of a better term."
oooooooh thats why she is called "moana"
by charm you mean cheese
I love your videos and max Payne 2 keep it up 👍 ❤
One thing that I should mention is that this series's setting is also very unique. It's a crime thriller, set in modern times. No horror, no sci-fi. It's a surprisingly underused setting in the games industry. The only other 2 big names I can think of using it is Need For Speed and of course Grand Theft Auto, and the only indie I can think of is Hotline Miami.
I just don't get max Payne 2 is good why it didn't sell good ?
remakes what?
You are wrong.A real fan of Max Payne know that the second is the best, in every way.
Great game
I hope you'll cover Max Payne 3, it may not have been dome by Remedy and the writing isn't as strong but the gameplay is solid and Max's VA gives a stellar performance.
Meh
promosm
Little nightmares review plz?
if she survives it can only be implied that Mona died later in the hospital or in the ambulance ride since in the third game there are scenes that say things to let the player know she is dead
10:19 yeah right, Twin Peaks was a failed comedy, lots of sillines and i thought it would be something dark just like Address Unknown but the truth is that it was a piece of shit
