Chapter 3: Sexual Deviants is truly among the most atmospheric and creepy levels ever in a video game. That's the kind of sadistic, brutal but darkly comic tone Rockstar should've gone for as a whole. In a largely forgettable experience, this level is a bonafide masterpiece.

Really? Maybe it's because I'm playing the lackluster Wii version but it felt like a lazy edgy Duke Nukem 3D strip club knock off. I respect your opinion, maybe it's because I'm old now, I liked this game 10 years ago but I just played through that section again and it was kinda eye rolling. Admittedly it's got the most personality in the game, it certainly had an atmosphere whereas the environments in the rest of the game feel pretty generic.

@@Roflcrabs I felt like Manhunt 2 also fell short on the gangs/hunters. In Manhunt 1 the gangs were varied (I also think in their AI behaviors) and usually had like three levels dedicated to them which gave variety. In Manhunt 2 most of the time you're dealing with the Watchdogs/bounty hunters which gets repetitive quick, especially when the game shifts to shooting much earlier in my opinion than in the first game which also doesn't allow you to hear their dialogue.

Manhunt 2 definitely is a flaccid experience, in most areas and regularly. You really have no reason to be brutal, and Daniel would probably avoid killing people, instead of going after them. The Pickman idea is not a bad one, but Leo should've been a cold, jingoistic and disciplined soldier, not a sadistic screaming killer, if he really was supposed to be an assassin.
I don't blame de devs, most of it seems to have been lot of flak in the backstages and shuffling around. But the game missed a big opportunity to make the Pickman project use Mr. Nasty's footage and films as material for their indoctrination and brainwash. Hell, half the game could be Mr. Nasty and the CIA producing footage for a subject to watch, and be turned into a cold-blooded soldier, that follows what their earpiece tells them to.
Even as it was, the game could try to make Leo be appeased by Brutal killings. So you do them to "calm him down" and subside him in Daniel's psyche. But the choreographed twist is the more you do it, the more he becomes stronger and takes control in the end. Just as the brutality in the original Manhunt is incentivized or forced, and after you cut ties with the DIrector, you have no reason to do it anymore, only inertia or sadism at best. In Manhunt 2 you never had a reason, false or real.

I feel like the way this game should've went is like this:
Keep leo alive, and have him kill all the people in his path that's in his way to go see pickmen and stop him from running the whole pickmen bridge operation once and for all
And have danny kill no one, as seen in gameplay in the beginning of how fearful, resistant, and how he wants to be passive with certain situations, they could've have danny be stealth missions, having him slip past watchdogs, corrupt cops, etc, until he finds all the pieces to restore his memory
And maybe for an ending when danny realizes that he was brainwashed and manipulated by pickmen to have a killer in his head that made him kill his wife, he goes out to find danny to kill him and remove him from his life as revenge for what happened to his wife, and then continue the original ending from here where danny wakes up on a road, with documents that tells him his new name and extra info

In Manhunt 2's defense, even tho it did have more gun focused levels, most of these are completable using the melee stealth kills, at least on the psp version I played, with the exceptions being that Leo flashback level with the sniper rifle and the occasional "shootout" set piece, like the cinema room you mentioned. Still not the smartest decision, since I would prefer guns to be less present in the game, but it does bring back that extra tension of hunting well armed gangmembers and it is better than having all gun focused levels only having guns to use with no melee weapons available (and for those situations you have the gun executions). But overall I agree with you in that Manhunt 2 isn't as good as the first one, even tho its still a game I really enjoy and play from time to time on my psp. it does help that that version doesn't have the weird annoying aiming while maintining the whole "headshots only available when at a closer distance", since it helped maintain the sneaking up close to an armed enemy and then holding the (auto)aim button, instead of the main console version giving you free aiming that isnt actually that free and is more annoying than anything

The scariest part of Manhunt 2 for me was the mission early game (I think the second) where Danny has to search his house and Watchdogs show up while he’s in the basement. Hard to describe without sounding weird but it reminds me of a nightmare I had where I killed someone and police showed up to my house, just the feeling that your life is over if you don’t act quick.

I actually really really liked this sequel, as a straight up sequel to the snuff film ring of Manhunt, it was disappointing, but as it’s standalone game, it deserves its Manhunt title. If A Clockwork Orange, Hostel and Fight Club had a baby, it’ll be Manhunt 2. Playing Leo Kasper was great, if there was ever a live action film about this, I always thought Jon Bernthal would make a great Leo Kasper.

I guarantee had they made the version of the game with Frisbee in place of Leo Kasper (despite him still being in the game as a separate person/Project Defector), it not only would’ve been a more engaging story but also opens up significantly more room for Dark Comedy + more Meta stuff more akin to the first game.
Although…I honestly would’ve loved to have seen the Religious Fanatic story that was also in contention. It would further put into context some of the cut levels/executions/weapons like the Aztec Sacrifice Altar + the Iron Maiden (still in the final game) from the History Museum and the D*ldo within the Sorority House level that was found within the files as a named Chapter. They could’ve PUSHED THE DAMN ENVELOPE with this premise so hard, we probably wouldn’t have Rockstar around today had they “gone there”
But with the MK Ultra version in the final game, while it does make sense and give context for the Hunters basically being test subjects without any humanity left + refuse of the Pickman Project(s), somehow you feel cheated by how much they cut and confused by what was actually left in! Like, for example, “Domestic Disturbance” being the second to last level (or third if you go for the Bad Ending) and it just being Leo running around the Suburbs evading Police and Neighborhood Watch to reach Danny’s Wife…when in the first drafts, it was Level 3 and had you hunting members of the Pickman Project while dispatching the Legion (no Caesar), which was a Hunter Faction still present in the final game…but only in Level 1. They were supposedly going to be a MAJOR Hunter Faction like the Project’s Cleaners, but then completely sidelined…full models for more variants and everything
I could go on, but yeah…it was shipped Incomplete AF, but as it is, it’s still a good game that’s caught in the shadow of its original iteration(s)

I want everyone to remember that when Manhunt 2 was shown at E3 the ESRB released a statement that day that the content shown in the demo would warrant an AO rating.
Manhunt 2 feels really sloppy in the second half because that’s where a lot of the changes to the story and plot were made. I would say they were going for something more like Outlast and that was a mark almost impossible to hit back in that era of gaming. The amount of violence combined with the context the violence is presented in is something most people couldn’t handle.
This is one of the few games that I still think about to this day what it would have been without the ESRB coming down on it so hard so quick

This game has its strengths and its weaknesses. It’s still a pretty good game (other than the godawful frame rate), but it had potential to be a GREAT game. I do like the gangs though. The Pervs, Watchdogs, and those bounty Hunter redneck dudes especially. Great voice acting too, even though whenever I hear Leo, I just think of Robin from Teen Titans lol. They don’t have the same voice actor, but their voices are pretty similar.
I respect the attempt to try a different take on the story though, as much as I prefer the VHS snuff slasher atmosphere of the first game and I think Manhunt 1 was better at balancing the edginess to a proper level of edgy that doesn’t become cringe.

It was censored and banned for the amount of gore that it had, but in terms of psychological horror, the first game did that much better. That said, it wasn't a bad game as far as sequels go. I'm one of the few who enjoys Manhunt 2 a lot. In fact, it's my favourite compared to the original because the plot is more engaging and I love the characters. The twist ending of Daniel Lamb having a split personality, which I did not see it coming, was awesome. I find myself playing Manhunt 2 on the PC and Vita once a year. The only thing I didn't like was the graphics. We had Modern Warfare, Uncharted, Mass Effect, and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in 2007 and Manhunt 2's character models looked ugly and outdated in comparison.
With the games we have now like Outlast, Mortal Kombat 11, and Grand Theft Auto V, Manhunt 2 is pretty tame with the violence and sex content (especially GTA V's sex scene in one of Franklin's side quests). Rockstar shouldn't worry about making another Mahhunt game, which is something I really really want, but I feel the momentum is gone and most of the creators have left the company. Still, I dream and hope that there will be Manhunt 3 in the near future.

Manhunt 2 was destroyed by censoring, changing story mid development and lower budget. Also broken AI, average design at few places and a lot more shooting than in first Manhunt. First few levels are awesome (asylum, S&M club or red light district) but the further in the game the more shooting there is. Story has big holes and most of characters are plain bad (like good granny dr Whyte)

I actually liked the environmental executions and the story could work with some tweaking, I just wish they were in a better game. With it's lack of connections to the original, Manhunt 2 could have easily been it's own game. It's brand name wasn't the only problem, but it was a pretty big one in my opinion.
I think the controversy behind the game is more interesting than the game itself. Calling the game a "murder simulator" is so comical to me since horror movies around the time were just as gruesome, yet apparently over the top violence is only a problem when video games do it.

The thing about Manhunt 1 is that the violence in that game actually had a purpose. If you really think about it, it was basically a satire of violent media, complete with someone complementing the violence as it happens onscreen. It also had a lot of other things that are still relevant today such as corrupt cops and someone abusing their power to get away with sick shit (Starkweather is basically if Harvey Weinstein made snuff films).
Manhunt 2 on the other hand is basically violence and controversy for the sake of violence and controversy. It doesn't really say anything with the violence depicted other than, "Look how edgy we are." This game is basically an NC-17 rated version of _Fight Club_ but that movie didn't need that much violence to get its point across whereas here it's just shock value.

In the AO PC version you can easily un-censor the game by running in "Stereoscopic Mode." It gets rid of the red haze and camera effects making the game brutal as shit. I've played this game every year around Halloween (since its' release) and I've gotten so good at it I can do the motion executions fluidly without delay. The more you play it the better the story gets and the more you actually feel the madness of Danny. Also, the inner voice being a "child-like burn the ants type narrative" is kind of the point. Danny was subjected to MK Ultra programming and highly traumatized. It caused him to split into 2, one being the primal side (that we all try to suppress) and the other being a father and husband who can't come to terms with the fact that he is the reason his family died. The deeper he goes down the rabbit hole he then realizes that he is both Danny and Leo but he realizes this creation is not of his own doing. It's badass really.

I love the first as this gritty and mostly grounded story of human evil, and the second for its crazy MKUltra esque storyline, so it just depends what mood I'm in which one I'll play. One thing I'll say about Manhunt 2 is I think Leo is a really interesting character, and his actor, Holter Graham, absolutely kills it. I think he's as good a character as Starkweather.

Kind of feel that the rating system didn't work here compared to the first Manhunt. The first one's manual has in-game snuff films rated on a scale of 1-5, so if you get a 5, it's both indicative of you doing well in-game and the consumers of Starkweather's snuff films rating it high due to the brutality, which is clever.
Here there's no justification other than ranking how well you did. They could have dressed it up to look like a Dixmor evaluation or maybe even bring back the snuff format due to the Pervs having that front for the Project.
