Max Payne is one of those truly timeless games Also cool fact: in MP2 Max gets gradually better at playing the game's theme on the numerous pianos he comes across
One of the most interesting aspects of Remedy games (for me anyway) is how increasingly interconnected they are. From the voice of Max Payne also voicing an alternate author in Alan Wake, to elements of Alan Wake getting incorporated into the world of Control - while each of those games are pretty different from one another I like how the little connections make it feel like one big world they're building.
My lady. My lord? My lady, there is a matter of great importance I must bring to your attention. My lord, there is? Indeed, my lady, there is indeed. From the very first moment we met, upon that distant forest path, there has been sunlight in the autumn leaves, blazing like the colors of your hair. Oh, my lord, you should not speak so! But, my lady, I must! I must! My lord, no! I forbid you! This cannot be! This must not be! But why, my love, why? My lord...it is too dreadful, do not force me to speak the words! My lady, I beg of you, I must know! I would rather die than not know! Yes, my lord, we should both be dead, for this shame is too great for the living! My lord...I am...my lord, I am your long lost sister...!
I don't know if people are able to notice the jump in graphical fidelity at this point but this is a game i HAD to upgrade my PC for back in 2001, at this time people had been playing Thief 2, Deus Ex, Counter Strike, The Sims, and sprite based games like Diablo 2 and Red Alert 2, so Max Payne really blew people away. The texture quality and detail was so impressive, snow falling, footprints, torn up dry wall trickling out of bullet holes, wood splinters, fabric and paper would be shredded with "particles" floating in the air, all the superfluous environment interaction, i used to activate the developer camera and watch all the guns function in slow motion, bullet casings and magazines would eject and stay on the floor forever, muzzle flashes had to be fully animated due to the slo mo, seeing bullets whizzing through the air alone was a huge wow moment for people used to the hitscan weapons of the past, there was nothing else like it. A lot of that is thanks to Remedy making their own engine, the advancement of graphics technologies at this time was absolutely unbelieveable, it's crazy to think Max Payne 2 came out 2 years later they look decades apart, and while that game is a little weaker in terms of superflous details it more than makes up for it in its graphics and of course Havok physics. If you couldn't tell from my profile picture Max Payne had a massive impact on me and has always been one of my favourite games.
“Lupino thought he could get us by taking Alex out, and leaving me to take the fall for it. All he had gotten was my attention”. Great video about a great game. Looking forward to hearing your take on the sequel
I didn't catch it when I was younger, and I haven't played in a long time, so it wasn't until this video that I realized the references with Woden's name and his "patch". I still remember some of the lines from the series, though only in bits and pieces. "Fear that gives men wings", and the sequel's "Mirrors are more fun than television." I was pretty young when I played them, and it was one of the earliest times I can remember playing a game where story and atmosphere were given such a strong focus. Genuinely classic games.
I'm extremely excited for the Max Payne remakes, however, I'm even more excited for the Alan Wake sequel! Honestly Remedy just makes some excellent content wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to criminally underrated Quantum Break
Love the entire series. Max Payne 3 is still seriously underrated as a deconstruction of the entire series; it helps having one of the best OSTs of the 2010s.
Not sure you understand what a deconstruction is and why mp3 is the deconstruction of the series since it's completely different in many aspects (so different that it leaves the range for it to be considered a 'deconstruction') and also inferior in some major ones despite the technology advancements since 1 and 2 After playing mp3 I think only Sam Lake can 'deconstruct' this series if that is even needed in the first place (the answer is probably no) I don't think that watching "Man on fire" and thinking "wow cool and it's considered a modern noir - Max Payne is a noiresque game, let's make it like Man on fire, this will surely work" was a good step
@@AydarBMSTU I don't wanna spell it out, but as much as I love the Remedy developments; Rockstar did as much a good job as any a secondary developer/publisher could've. It goes much beyond superficial aesthetic: and the more you play the whole series, and the longer you give 3 to develop and gestate.. sure the one-liners and incidental dialogue may be a bit rough, but the whole picture and symbolic callbacks ring out and it's just.. fucking great.
@@AydarBMSTU If you really wanna gestate an opposing argument, consider Noah Gervais' video on Max Payne series. It's about what I consider. All the pieces matter.. not just technological wrap ups. And despite loving Remedy, seeing them remake the first two.. it leaves me worried for how perfect a wrap up 3 gave Max.. he deserves rest..
Found this game on Xbox for 5$. Obvious early 2000s jank aside, the first Max Payne was awesome and a great introduction to stylish action games. I just had to get the other two games
I remember buying Max Payne 1 from a Blockbuster store when I was young. I took it home and enjoyed it for the action and the violence, as well as the noir style storytelling. I hated the dream sequences because they were confusing and frustrating to locate the end of the maze like levels and they would also scare the shit out of me with the horror ambiance. But it is still a great video game and I'm glad that you made a video to focus on the details that make Max Payne work well, Boulder Punch.
There is no debating that John Woo gave birth to bullet time. I mean, sure, the Matrix popularized it more than most in cinema, but do remember that John Woo serves as an inspiration for the Matrix anyway.
Max Payne is that good, that even though I played it about 17 years after its release, I still fell in love with this franchise. The noir atmosphere, dialogues, characters sucked me into the game from the very first minutes. It's definitely one of my most favourite trilogies ever.
@Mark3T0 Yeah, this hard-to-define tonal shift is noticeable, also I'm not that fond of the plot going for "let's kill everyone who survived original game"
Finally you reviewed a game where the main character shares my first name - you just earned yourself a new patron :P In all seriousness good stuff dude.
I just replayed the trilogy for the 3rd time a few weeks ago, man it really holds up and is still alot of fun, aside from the graphics, the story and voice acting is fun and bullet time never seems to get old
Hey Boulder Punch, if you're interested into in-depth lore videos for Remedy Entertainment's games like Max Payne, Alan Wake etc then I recommend you to check out a Channel Gaming University who makes some of the most interesting Analysis/Symbolism videos I've ever seen done for Remedy's games!
i hope rockstar doesnt try to pull any cheap shit like they did with the gta trilogy. I trust remedy, I just don't want this remaster to flop, i need this shit to be good.
You don't use full potential of bullet time...afther activating of doge you should use slowmo...on hardest difficultys it's mandatory... Also on ps2 nightmares won't resets afther falling
I have a good feeling about the remakes. I think remedy cares about Max Payne and that they don't rush out a lackluster remake. I really liked the shooting in control and I think that this engine can work great for Max. It will feel different but it will feel good to Play. At least that's what I hope. Btw good Video.
Absolutely incredible game. I've completed it so many times. The sequels came no where near the quality of the first. So many memorable moments. Loved it.
An absolute neo noir/hard boiled masterpiece! Just a beautiful game. And the 2nd one was totally on point, also (just a little bit too short maybe). Nothing like it since. The third one though.. well, that's another story. Thanks for the review.
Didn't know the steam version required outside patches to get working properly. You can play the entire Max Payne trilogy on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X thanks to backwards compatibility. On PlayStation 4 & 5 however, not so lucky. Only Max Payne 1 was remastered for the abandoned PS2 On PS4 program. I hope they don't mess up the remakes. Give Max Payne 1&2 the RE1 Remake treatment, not the lazy RE3 Remake method.
Meeting Sam Lake, James McCaffrey, and Matthew Perotta as well as Courtney Hope a few years ago before Control came out was great. When telling the voice of Max Payne that his 10 second cameo in that horrible movie was the best thing about it, and everyone is like, "you're not wrong". :)
No there is nothing underrated about this game. It received great reviews by both fans & critics, sold over 7.5 million copies & was an influenced to a few games like Dead to Rights. The game is still well known even to modern audience & fans of the game cheered with news of the remake. Now if u want to know a game that is truly underrated & ahead of its time. PSI-Ops Mindgate Conspiracy
Love this entire trilogy. The only knock I have against the third one is the change of scenery from gritty New York to sunny Brazil. Even then, they made it work. I was hoping for a Max Payne 4 at some point, but I'm curious to see how the remake of the first two pans out.
i kind of like it, even though the third is still my least favorite. Max is out of his element, he doesn't even understand portugese. I think that's what makes it work, the setting is a major part of the story.
I still can't decide which one I love more, I'm not often finish games, especially now, but games with very direct and intriguing story gets me so good. Every Max Payne is great, each game that got released I didn't even realized that I've replayed them so much. Same for MGS1 & MGS4 and the OG Mafia 1. maybe I just love action crime dramas in my games. Edit: actually, no. Max Payne 3 doesn't have an intriguing story, it has a good theme around it, it's dark, and the gameplay is fantastic.
True classics that'll never grow old. The remakes are the only 2 I can think of where I've really been hyped because of how much I love the trilogy and because Remedy is remaking them themselves.
I played this game many times on the PS2 when it first came out and it was ground breaking for its time. The nightmare sequences and following the crying baby sounds down long hallways was really creepy for it’s day. That is until Silent Hill 2 finally came out. Also my lord my lady is such an intense and gripping show. They should make a Netflix sequel to bring back their subscriber numbers, Bazinga! The amazing atmosphere was done because of the limited graphics back then. They had to get under our skin in other ways, and it worked great. Honestly was looking forward to seeing more about the nightmare sections but talked about that the least :/ For some reason I liked the Max Payne film. Maybe it’s cuz the Russian Bond babe ALMOST got naked in it lol and she was super fine back then.

After what they did to GTA3/VC/SA... The remake stuff already makes me want to barf.
Don't worry, original MP developers are behind the production of remakes.
They don't make em like this anymore. The Max Payne franchise is literally the most unique series in the video game industry.💯🔥❤️👌
14:03 The asterisk goes _before_ the annotation.
If you put it behind like you did, it looks like there is a foot-note for "and they"...
here's hoping the remakes get a better treatment than the GTA trilogy got.
Since it's the same studio doing it and they left Alan Wake the same, I wouldn't worry.
It's not some outsourcing to random Indians job.

Remedy are really good at what they do. I bet they will treat their child with the respect it deserves. Unlike rockstar with gta
Remedy even when they don’t make a great game it’s never because of greed or spite
