Capcom's Overlooked Survival Horror Title | Haunting Ground

- Haunting Ground is an overlooked PS2 survival horror title that's well worth seeking out.
Released in the spring of 2005 shortly after Resident Evil 4 on the PlayStation 2, Haunting Ground (or Demento as it's known in Japan) sold poorly, but gained a fanbase over the years and has become a bit of a collector's item.

For running Haunting Ground on PCSX2: wiki.pcsx2.net/Haunting_Ground
Pulling heavy influence from the Clock Tower and Resident Evil series, Haunting Ground has one of the best implementations of a pursuer system in a survival horror title. One pursuer is among the very best I've come across. Haunting Ground also has my favorite iteration of a dog companion, Hewie, in any game with some wonderful AI that leads to a great bonding system with Hewie and Fiona.
The use of body horror and voyeurism in Haunting Ground creates an unsettling experience where it leaves a lot of blanks for the player to fill in themselves.
Haunting Ground is very much worth a play if you're a fan of survival horror. While I'm not a huge fan of the constant remasters we get these days, Haunting Ground would be a perfect candidate for one due to its limited availability. Its limited availability has led to high prices for physical copies of Haunting Ground.

Daniela's music sounds like Devil May Cry music you can compare.
Hey!! Do you get your youtube channel name from that resident evil gane where you have to make a "bridge" by punching a boulder?
I just downloaded this game for my emulator
Now They are talking about making normal NPC's that turned into monsters if you don't watch them , But you don't know which is the NPC and which is a monster, So now you have to be judging about who you shoot
I gotta say, Haunting Ground is one of the more disturbing games I have played, I think a lot of the deaths taking place off screen but keeping the audio was a genius choice in increasing that feeling of being unsettled. Having it be called "Demento" in Japan is honestly pretty fitting.
The music when you’re being chased is, no joke, the scariest music from any game I’ve played. Even the Silent Hills, etc.
I don’t know why it gets to me so much, I just think it’s utterly horrendous 😂😅
The thing that separates this game from any other survival horror is that some of the stalkers you encounter (ie. Daniella) stop chasing you and act normal, like she'll be cleaning, going insane etc it's unlike any other survival horror I've played and it envokes certain emotions and feelings I've yet to experience from any other SH. A TRUE MASTERPIECE
Yeah, the first time my household's playthrough ran kntoy post-pursuit Daniella just... cleaning something... it freaked us out more than a chase. Every time we went by her we were so convinced she'd suddenly lunge. Masterful.
Damn, that bad end from mistreating Hewie is dark as fuck.
It's a literal rape hentai ending
Bet many got their imaginations go wild on how it happened
I thought it was the most light hearted ver. Everyone has a smile on there face and Fio gets a new family 🤜🤛
always treat your doggo well, ig, irl.
You get what you deserve.
Hey don't be mean to the doggo.
The crazy thing , I did alot of research on this game only after discovering it in my dad's old car trunk.
I thought it was just a random ps2 game but. Apparently this is one of the rarest games you can find.
And I had just found it sitting unopened. @_@
U BIOTCH!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯😱😍🤣
congrats on that! It's like 80€ now and sealed ones are 200+
It’s weird I got a sealed copy off eBay about 4 years ago for $20 Australian and now I can’t find it lower then hundreds. Guess I got lucky.
My version of this was being an American fire emblem fan & owning both Radiance games (Path & Dawn) on GameCube then wii, with Path of Radiance going for $300 used in good condition at one point during peak of corona virus, which I have & couldn't bring myself to sell it. They're both great games, truly
So lucky
Really good graphics and facial animations for 2005. Wish I had played this when it was new, but it missed me.
It could pass for an early PS3 title. Really impressive.
if you've ever dabbled in emulation, try this game with upscaled resolution. it's fucking gorgeous. in fact, a *lot* of survival-horro games on the PS2 were just stunning tbh, CRT TVs probably muddled a lot of the finer texture details but just boot up a Fatal Frame (especially 3) or Silent Hill with some upscaling and it's remarkable.
@@ohjeezriles interesting. Would love to get this emulated on the Stem Deck.
@@cwoza5 I don’t yet have a steam deck so I couldn’t say for certain, but I did just search & see that there are tutorials for installing & running PCSX2 (most popular PS2 emulator) on a Steam Deck
How hard was the PS2 pushed back then? It's almost as if as the game's made for Gamecube or Xbox with that kind of graphics.
“Deaths aren’t as brutal as RE4”. Immediately followed by a clip of Fiona screaming in pain and dying a slow, agonizing death by killer bugs. That’s much more unsettling than a chainsaw decapitation from RE4 haha. Certainly not as gory but the screams from Fiona are heartbreaking and the deaths off screen leave a lot to the imagination which is worse in most cases.
yeah that made me very uncomfortable. I mean getting shot by a dozen arrows isn't a great way to die, but that many shots you're probably going into shock and dying very quickly with (relatively) little pain. Being eaten alive, by so many tiny things none of which can hurt you enough at once to even have a chance at a quick end like a bear snapping your neck? It's chillingly horrifying for anyone with the slightest sense of empathy. Still gives me shivers just thinking of it right now.
Incase you're curious of what's happening in the Stalker/Pursuer game over audio:
•Debilitas is playing with Fiona's corpse, tearing her apart as blood is splattered and dripping on the floor.
•Daniella is tearing into Fiona's womb to obtain her Azoth, she moans then laughs maniacally, because she is able to feel emotions.
•Ricardo is impregnating Fiona. The bullet wounds inflicted on Fiona are non-lethal, since she needs to be alive to rebirth Ricardo using the "wet method."
•All 3 versions of Lorenzo's audio is him sucking out Fiona's Azoth through mouth-to-mouth, as seen in a cutscene through repeated playthroughs, where he sucks Azoth out of Ricardo, leaving him with white eyes.
The last one about Lorenzo is just.....tf
All in all, wildshit
Actually it's confirmed Ricardo is just doing his deed with her still fresh and warm corpse but I must say the rest is spot on.
Wtf
So dismemberment and rape.
@@bubbajoe117 but he can't make a baby that way 😒 either way it's terrifying
I find interesting how lots of Capcom female characters looks similiar, for example she looks like jill from RE5
i really thought the same.
Same thing with, say, Trish from DMC5. She looks a lot like Mia from RE7, even though they were based on two completely different models.
Well, both DMC, this game and RE5 are all built from RE4, so it's no surprise.
Its just the same engine they used at the time
I’d say RE5 Jill looks like Fiona seeing Haunting Ground came out in 2005
I'm surprised you didn't mention Brown (from Rule of Rose) when you were going through the dog companions.
I can't help but think of Rule of Rose or Clock Tower 3 when I think of Haunting Ground. Admittedly Survival Horror isn't really my genre although I like those games, so maybe I'm making a very basic connection along the lines of "cute female protag gets chased," which isn't even that accurate in RoR's case, from what I remember, you have to fight and deal with the clunky combat Dx
Rule of Rose is one of the oddest games from this time frame. I hate the combat with a passion, but as a whole it's disturbing and weird in all the right ways.
The main character looks a lot like the main character from Rule of Rose, too.
@@danyerug6985 I dont mind fans saying Fiona look simlier to character from Rule of rose. It annoys me when fan says that Fiona look like jill. Jill only looks like that in one RE game.all the other Re games she doesn't look like that.
Most of the same people that worked on HG worked on CT3, so that's probably why you've made the connection.
I thought of RoR too, im so glad to see someone who thought too!!
Im happy that we agree, Daniella's one of the best pursuers in video game history! And 'Something Lacking', Daniella's chase theme is one of my fave video game tracks
Honestly, i really wish the composer for this title had done more music, this was the first and ONLY game they composed for, just for reference
Scary,funny and cute XD
The fact of no loading times makes it incredibly immersive. I thank my lucky stars I picked it cib for only eighty bucks back in the day.A shame it's never been remastered
i got lucky that my cousin got it from a game store for a couple bucks way back a few years after its release.
Haunting Ground is one of my favorites from the PS2 era, along with Rule of Rose and Fatal Frame. So many great horror ideas back then, and you've got to love a game that centers around treating your dog right (or suffer the consequences!).
Fun fact: Siren 2 has a few levels that play more with the concept of playing as a dog that has to guide their owner. Shu Mikami is mostly blind, and with the power of "Sightjacking," or seeing through others' eyes, you can use his dog Tsukasa's eyes and move Shu around, essentially playing in the rare "2nd person perspective"
16:43 on the topic of Fiona being seen as a doll, its really interesting they chose this shot after she was killed by the nails. Almost like she's a toy in a dollhouse
I like how the presence of dolls in the first half of the game slowly transitions into the presence of the homunculi in the second half, with Debilitas' view of Fiona as a doll to play with not being too different from how Riccardo and Lorenzo view Fiona and life itself.
These "you are a woman" horror games are insanely scary on a very personal level, and I am sad they aren't really a thing anymore.
Yea inagin one with somone like the lolita doll maker as the villain that be horific
@@demonic_myst4503 check out “alisa “ a game by casper croes
Wimminz 2 spooky 4 me.
Particularly terrifying when enemies constantly want to use your womb/body against your own wishes.
Everyday is a "you are a woman" horror game.....
I’ll always remember the Game Informer review of this game where they complained about a lack of enemy variety.
Literally docked it points because they couldn’t believe after a few hours that had only seen “one enemy.” One of the worse misunderstandings of a games intentions I had read from a journalistic outlet at the time.
Really great video! Keep up the good work!
Sounds like game journalism today
This makes me so angry xD
More like DMC, Onimusha, and this game were all Resident Evil, failures...and turned into their own IP as they continued on them.
Blue check marks existed before Twitter. Lmao
Fiona's laughter in the bad end with Ricardo sounds similar to Daniella's. I know the laguhter is just meant to indicate insanity, I just don't think it's a coincidence they had them both indicate it in such similar ways. Daniella's also very, very upset with how women 'lure' men to them again and again. Makes me wonder if she was intended to become pregnant but wasn't fit for the task, lacking Azoth as she was, so she's disgusted about being incomplete herself and also disgusted by those who can be used by men.
I think so too! the abandoned nursery is noted to be one of the few rooms in the castle that is not meticulously cleaned by Daniella, likely because it reminds her of how useless she feels for not being able to give birth
....more like jealousy
Fiona and Hewie's models are really well made for PS2 graphics, really all the character models look pretty good and although some textures are bland there are some pretty good ones in haunting ground
I bought this game at a gamestop in 2008 for 8 euros. Never saw another physical copy ever again. Played and loved it.Still got my copy. Daniella and her stalking theme still gives me nightmares too this day.
>hide behind door
>Hewie hangs out in the open
>pursuer runs right past
Holy crap that's immersion breaking.
Even more funny
With that same logic if you hit hewie and dont apologize, then the next time that pursuer comes, hewie barks at your spot and exposes you. so the immersion is double broken.
To be fair they're not looking for Hewie.
@@rinraiden But they see you with Hewie... see you working together.
Wouldn't that be at least _worth a check_ instead of running right past?
@@OuroborosChoked Normally yes. But Debi has the mind of a small child. Daniella will try to kill Fiona one minute and give her perfume the next. And Riccardo has sex on the brain.
...or I could just be making weak excuses for the game because I love it so much. Who knows.😆
@@rinraiden Nah I think you’re right, the pursuers are all a few sticks short of a fire for various reasons and they are too hyper focused on Fiona to exert any true critical thinking, just focus on the chase.
I never had Haunting Ground, because it was never avaliable in stores when I went to look for it, but I did come back to it in my early teens and watched a playthrough of it. As a woman myself, the early 2000s were an amazing time for horror and women. There were so many stories which really _fucked_ with you. In really deeply profound ways that came away with you when you turned the TV off. Something about a horror where the entity chasing you wants you, just because you're a woman, not for a sexual reason but for some unidentifiable otherworldly reason, that's terrifying.
It preys on the already existing fear that you sometimes get walking alone at night, but it makes it more aggressive, more palpable, without losing the ambiguity that makes it truly scary.
A lot of horror now is monsters attacking children with 80s haircuts. While I like that horror, it really doesn't feel like this sort of thing did. You turn it off and you don't think of it again. But the PS2 era really was not afraid to make you genuinely uncomfortable and afraid and that's worth a lot of respect.
Do you know any other games besides silent hill 3 and Hunting Ground with similar themes?
@@_mari_1555Rule of Rose has that unique vibe tho some clunky combat, as well as Fatal Frame series, tho srsly not recommeding the 5th one cause its just not good
Omg! I still have this game, I bought it as soon as it came out (mostly because you are a girl with a dog!) This pair Hewie and Fiona is interesting because of how vulnerable and alone you are, you can't attack so Hewie really is an invaluable companion. I really liked this game and never understood why it wasn't more popular at least for the mechanics that (at the time it came out) were fairly groundbreaking.
It is a classic fair confident to say not repeated
So many great horror games that never made a comeback... :( Galerians, Koudelka, Rule of Rose, Haunting Ground, Forbidden Siren, Clock Tower, Fatal Frame (well it did get smth), Parasite Eve, Dino Crisis and I know I'm forgetting something. There's also the action focused games like Vampire Hunter D, Primal, Vampire The Masquerade, Legacy of Kain.
I think you got all of them.
Theres no way for Rule of Rose
This gane got banned in 8 countries due to controversies (rap3 and sexxxxxualization)
GhostHunter on PS2 is severely overlooked and underrated.
I would say the "action" in your last sentence is more like adventure
@@morkgin2459 there is action tho, action adventure then
Another fantastic video, and fantastic game. I grew up with this game, and it is so refreshingly TWISTED (and so frustrating to find now). It's almost like a cousin of Silent Hill, cuz' it's got some real disturbing themes and implied imagery (without shoving it in your face) most games today won't even touch (like those game over screens, you have to sit there and think about what they're doing to Fiona, it's just so nasty and sickening).
The music, the atmosphere, the dread, the helplessness, the villains, the themes, it's all so good. It's not a game I usually expect from Capcom, but I see this one as a masterpiece, it hits all the right notes for me as a fan of this genre. But good luck snagging a copy of this game, it's a crime how rare this game is.
I still regret giving this game to my brother. I remember being scared sh*tless playing it as a kid, getting this game now is like trying to buy a car 😢
Did he sell it? Or will he just refuse to give it back since its value shot up since then?
@@slowyourroll1146 he's a collector. He basically scammed me for all my PS2 games and even my PS2 💀
@@Spaceman_u not really since you we’re pretty stupid to not look up the value of your items
If I’m being honest
Have you tried, you know, making your own copy?
@@Spaceman_u That sucks I think I remember selling my copy for about $10 to a friend who moved away along time ago
This game fills you with the most tension in any game I've played and one of the scariest feelings of being chased in a game.
One of my fav games ever.i wished I would have never lost it when I moved almost 17 years ago smh.capcom was good with graphics on the ps2.this game looks amazing still.maybe a remaster would fix some of the clunkyness but even if they didn't,please release on p4 and 5 as is
Very underrated indeed. The graphics still look very good to this day. Hope it gets a remaster to PC and newer consoles someday.
I don't think the game gets a remake or remaster - mostly because of the subject matter and themes, which are all considered "too controversial for entertainment" nowadays. Fiona being a weak female curvy girl, can't have that - also the big guy following her looked and acted like he had Down Syndrome and of course that can't be a villain because that would be offensive to people with down syndrome...
Capcom put out some amazing games during the PS2 console gen.
They've put out amazing games during every generation tbh
Jeeesus, what a fucked up game. They got really creative with how they get under your skin with this one, hate that I missed it but glad it exists all the same.
My favorite thing about the pursuers is that mechanically they all adapt differently to how you play.
Debilitas will never notice that you use the same hiding spots, and is most prone to falling for the easy "Hide behind a door" trick.
Daniella, if a door can be closed, she will stop to close it, which will give you time to transfer rooms, but if you're wanting to double back to where you need to go, well you're fucked, she just closed it, gotta waste time opening it while she is most likely walking towards you.
Ricardo, will check behind doors more often than others.
One of the rare games where transition to an area doesn't involve a loading screen.
Huey always makes me cry. He’s a big motivation behind me getting a dog someday. I’ve been in danger and had animals come to my rescue, and seeing Fiona and Huey work together really honestly makes me cry.
Damn its so cool that animals helped you. I hope you get a dog. I recommend adopting an adult dog 🐕 rather than buying a puppy, for your first dog. We adopted a dog that looks just like Hewie and is as smart, at a shelter. When he was in that shelter, he was depressed, fat, and had bad fur. Once we got him, he became a happy, active, and beautiful pupper. Its really amazing to see this transformation.
At the time of me writing this, I have my dog asleep by me right now! It was difficult during his puppy stage, what with having him go potty outside (he only does it inside when he gets too excited), but with time we got the hang of it.
@@KOTEBANAROTdefinitely get a puppy for your first dog. First time owners will turn into better owners down the line when getting a puppy first. Learning to train a puppy and how dogs work is much easier than trying to correct an adult dog. The experience alone will help you reform older dogs and give them happier lives later.
The implications on death animations are absolutely fantastic.
Nitro Rad mentions in his essay on the game that it has some amazing camera work and he is absolutely right about that, Im realising after years.
So happy to see this video come out, I absolutely adore Haunting Ground! I still think about Daniella and how great of an antagonist she is. Would’ve loved for a sequel or similar title placed in the same world.

I'm so glad you mentioned that. It felt so incredibly good to hear that little jingle.
Such a great game. I regret trading my copy :( Can't get another copy of this now unfortunately with the ridiculous prices people want for it. Capcom needs to hurry up and get this game remastered.
It’s sad how some of my favourite pieces of media were overlooked because of bad timing :(
I'm so happy I got this game back in 2004 with how pricey and hard it is to find now. Such a great game! Panic mode does piss me off though bc I was kicking the first guys ass but but she still went panic mode and slapped into a wall...jeexzus Fiona get it together. I've never had a panic attack where I just run around in circles and run into walls
This game came out in 2005, though 😃

This is my personal favorite PS2 game and my top five favorite games ever it has a pretty scary story when you think about it sure it's not obviously scary but definitely gets under your skin. It's also a visually beautiful game and optimize better than anything else on the PS2 there's literally no loading screens when going from one area to another it's such a great game and I'm happy I have at least a pal copy because they got too expensive over covid
If I remember the only load hangups were the slot machine room, and the transition thru the elephant room.
Man, you deserve so many more views and subscribers than you have. Not a single one of your videos I have seen fails to be of high quality. That consistency, and the time you sink into them, is genuinely impressive.
The bonus unlockable costumes are awesome like the frog one
That cowgirl one with the gun though..
Ah, another convert to the cult of Danielle. She really is something special as a horror antagonist.
Loved the Death Grips reference.
Haunting Ground is one of the very few games that deals with the subject of Kabbalist mysticism, which a lot of western devs and writers seem to steer away from due to its association with Blood Libel. Aspects like the Sephirot chart being used in item creation. the golem puzzle, its all part of that historical legacy.
This game looks awesome, it gives me rule of rose vibes with the female protagonists, their dog companions and the dark stories both games portray, both Jenifer and Fiona also have a lot of similarities between them, but both of their experiences are unique which make the games distinct from one another, the settings and themes in the games create wonderful atmospheres too!!! :3 💕💕💕
This game came out before Rule of Rose.
It's honestly the missing middle-ground when it comes to horror these days. You're not completely helpless like in games such as Amnesia or Outlast, but you're also not a walking arsenal like Resident Evil and similar.
I'm still convinced that this is one of the games that came out of an extremely concerted effort to create RE4. The first attempt was too action based and was reworked into what became Devil May Cry. I feel like Haunting Ground came out of the following over correction to make a game with less action
You're 100% correct, Re4 spawned 3 new IPs
Devil may cry
Onimusha
Haunting ground
Haunting ground & RE4 & devil may cry were all masterworks & SOTC & Forbidden siren & Fatal frame & Killzone (I know not Japanese)
HG was supposed to be Clock Tower, right?
Haunting Ground is one of my favorite video games of all time, Unfortunately I had to sell it almost a year ago due to financial difficulties, along with Rule of Rose. I made about $500 for both games. I would love to see a reboot of this game. My only complaint about this game is I wish they expand Lorenzo's area, his area was the smallest and shortest of all the stalkers.
My sister got this at a bargain years ago when I was at college and we would take turns playing chapters when I came home for break, it is both amazing and sentimentaly nostalgic.
Hell ya new Boulder Punch video right on schedule to enhance my weekend. Great work brotha
The first time I play that game, I fell in love with it, even I died a lot the first time, then I got it, and was a really great acquisition, great game
I realy liked this review and to hear from someone who can appreciate the old school stuff
Hewie a real one
Thank you for making a video about this wonderful, underrated gem of a game!
This game has been “overlooked” like a million times already here on RUclips 😁
i remember this game being ripped to shreds by critics when it first came out. Back then, as a kid a "profressional" reviewer's opinion was law, so I never paid much attention to it. But a lot of footage I see of this game looks pretty good.
Thank you for including the dancing golem easter egg.
I am waiting for a new release of this game. One of my absolute favorites and I had a absolute crush for Fiona in my childhood. But that aside, this game were incredible in almost every other aspect. Even the credits music leaves me starstrucked.
I always loved the soundtrack ♡
This DESERVES a remake.
My all time favorite game since my mom got it for me for Christmas at age 9. It deserves so much more love and attention!
Haunting Ground still remains one of the most genuinely scary games I've ever played. Honestly, a lot of horror writers could take cues from this game.
One of my favorite horror games of all time, I was very lucky I got it for $20 in the ps2 era
I’m so glad someone appreciates Daniella as much as I did. Also Ricardo’s theme gave me intense anxiety just how chaotic and stabbing the synths are.
Nice. Your vids are getting better at a rapid pace.
Was lucky enough to get this off Amazon for $60 back in 2013 - 2014. At the time, Kuon was going for max $500, Rule of Rose about $300, and PDS for $500 . They were so out of my budget then, that I just made the jump to get this lol. And my, was it worth that price.
I'm lucky enough to own both Haunting Grounds and Rule of Rose complete. Only one I'm missing is Kuon but that game goes for $800 to $900 last I checked. Jeez.
@@FiercePanda74 lol I traded couple games I don't want to get rule of rose - recently. I can sell them tho idc .
I used to play this game quite a bit on the PS2 during my middle school years! It was a great horror game that scared me crazily & it made me so sad nobody else i personally knew had any idea what this game was. I wish i still had my old copy
Haunting Ground is so underrated, and I'm glad there are people to talk about this because it takes the "man's best friend" trope to the themes and gameplay of Clock Tower. Funnily enough, there are plenty of Capcom games and titles taking place in a creepy castle, house, or tower; examples include Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, Resident Evil Village, Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 3 Dante's Awakening, the list goes on; so it all makes sense from here with a cult classic like Haunting Ground.
A remaster of this game and a Clock Tower anthology (with Struggle Within getting a new translation) would be a dream come true
My man, now that you have covered this one, you gotta cover Rule of Rose, another cult classic released I think 1 year after this one. It has some similitude to this one, so I think you will enjoy it too, even if it's a bit janky at times.
I’m so glad to see someone revisit this game! If you have time, you should look into Rule of Rose - such a cult classic!
One of my favourite games of all time. I would buy a remaster in a heartbeat!
Is that Ashley Graham?? (the President's daughter, equipped with ballistics)

The "panic" effects look really cool.
Unfortunately, today's audience would complain about it. Well, this is not a game for everyone and some would stop playing because of the questionable themes, imagery and the gameplay.
@@Joshua_N-A Nah, it's a horror game so it'd be far less subjected to all the SJW/PC type BS. Maybe a little bit but in the end it's horror so many ordinarily taboo subjects are considered okay material for the genre.
I played this a long time ago when i was young and the music is still so nostalgic to me.
I played this for the first time about a year ago. I thoroughly enjoyed my playthrough of it although, if I was to aim one criticism at it I feel the pursuer mechanic was a little overplayed. I would be exploring the castle trying to figure out what to do next and I'd at points be constantly interrupted by the pursuer showing up. I'd sometimes have to run away almost to the other side of the area then make my way back to where I was and the pursuer would show up briefly after. Other than that it is an awesome game! Well worth checking out!
I've been waiting so long to see this game on your channel 😁
This was an amazing game. It was true horror and the characters were creepy and terrifying.
Wonderful job. I love how stylistic and attractive the in game models are, especially during cutscenes. Wish games like this still existed.
I also wish someone would figure out a way to make ps2 games portable. Especially since steam deck exists.
This is the second video I've seen about this game and I think I'm being drawn to it. I love the whole dark fairytale vibe and I was gutted when I saw it was only a limited, unsuccesful release way back when. I'd love to see a PS4/5 remaster, or even get the original released on PS+ premium. Maybe one day? In the meantime, thanks for the great overview 👍
Im so glad I grabbed this for 10 bucks from someone who didnt know better. It was factory sealed.
I also remember getting a BDSM products pamphlet along with it. Hmh.
omg what a steal how long ago ?
OMG do you still have the pamphlet?
Behold the duality of man
This is such an icky game, and it's all mostly implied instead of shown but honestly it makes it worst, it's not spooky and scary but it makes your skin crawl in disgust, its quite unique.
Do you think any AAA dev could make games like this today especially with female characters like Fiona?
@JoshuaNAjang if the story was good, then yeah probably
crazy i was JUST looking up info on this game and then i see this upload
One of the few games I've played to completion on the PCSX2 like 10 years ago at this point. Fantastic, twisted and disturbing story and atmosphere. My head cannon is that the game happens at the same time that RE4 is happening and in the same general area of rural Spain hence all of the recycled RE4 assets.
Still a good looking game IMO.
I hate how so many of these old survival horror games have become so difficult to find because they are considered vintage now. More people deserve to experience these games, including myself (I'm still searching for Silent Hill 😞).
That's exactly what emulation is for.
It's one of those games that i noticed but never got to actually play. I remember seeing it back in the day in a magazine, but it never arrived to the shop which i used to buy my games from.
And back then, without anywhere to find information from, i kept wondering if it was connected to RE4 that i just finished at that time, because the girl was very similar to Ashley, the dog reminded me of the one we saved, and game coming from the same company lol
Thanks for the review, it brought some cool nostalgia feelings, too.
This was one of my favourite games growing up, i still have 3 copies of it xD Love this game to bits.
Ah yes the missadventures of Jill Valentine!
The pursuers all have different time intervals of when they show up, and scripted events to show up too. ie. the Library cutscene with Daniella.
If I remember correctly Debilitas' timer is the longest and Daniella and Young Lorenzo having the shortest. Im pretty sure exact timers are written in the game guide book, but I can't find mine anymore lol
Was that Cullen's voice actors? Damn sounds just like him lol
Edit: It is in fact him, Greg Ellis
This was the best game I used to play back in the days. I even knew the whole maps by heart.
I saw the dog on thumbnail and i immediately clicked, and I'm glad I stayed :)
"Sly Hunter" is without a doubt my favorite stalker theme. Riccardo is (even including Lorzeno) the most OVERT in his motivation to capture Fiona. So it's fitting that his theme is the most overt, "Run away, be scared, RUN AWAY" theme. It's very simple admittedly but those strings that sound like the pounding of your heart in your ears just unnerved me every time. "Innocent Freak" and "Something Lacking" are more complex and have more layers for sure but "Sly Hunter" just scares me, the only piece of video game music that's ever freaked me out more is "My Heaven" and that's saying something.
I played this game only this year after 17 years that was released. It is so impressive game. Delicious to play. The graphics is in front of your time. Is the Clock Tower 3 spiritual sucessor. I loved this game!
The minigame where you play as Hewie reminds me a little bit of siren 2 where at one point you play as a blind character and have to you use your dog to see
I discovered this game when I was in China in 2006 as "Demento". I really liked it and when I was back in France, I tried to find it, but without success because I didn't know at the time that its title was "Haunting Ground" in Europe and America. 🤣
My cousin and I played the eff out of this game. Whenever I have nightmares about being pursued, it plays like this game and geez does it get the adrenaline going. Sometimes we'd try to get the enemies to come to us; made a lot of noise, kicked doors, activated traps...more often than not, they ignored us.
Hewie had a critical attack. If you make him wait until the enemy's back is to him, give him he attack command and he does some hefty damage. You can kick some items around for extra shenanigans.
You can also royally eff up and give Daniella a more powerful weapon! When she's tending the fire, leave her the eff alone otherwise she will chase you with a burning weight iron poker that does way more damage than the glass.
Oh! And the bad ending with Riccardo can play if you lose all your HP in that area. I always had the top three levels with Hewie and got that ending when I keeled over.
This game was the main reason for me to get into PS2 Emulation as well as buy my first used PS2 just a couple of years ago. I think it's one of the best horror games i have ever played. It absolutely nails the feeling of being completely helpless except for Hewie in your first playthrough. But it's also hilarious to turn things around with that boots you can unlock in later playthroughs that let Fionnas literally kick her persuers butts.
I'd love to see a remake or remaster of that game!
I love that people still remember this game, I’ve played it too many times all the way from being a small 9 year old to 17 year old me now. It’s crazy to think that I got the game just because it had a dog on the front and I’m glad I did. I never knew it was a horror game until I found out the hard way lmao. I was petrified and couldn’t bring myself to continue playing until my mom had forced me to play it considering she spent maybe 20$ or so on it for me. The more I played the more I got used to the scary parts of it and eventually got all the endings which unlocks costumes for hewie and Fiona and a secret room at the start menu. I hope one day there will be a remaster for the game, I would be thrilled to play it on a higher gen console. Thank you for making this video
I had this game back on PS2 and did every single ending, had every costume and loved every second of the game. I do with they'd re-release it.
Edit: it actually did make me feel bad for going for a CERTAIN ending... given what you need to do with Hewie. But hey, he became a plushie afterwards and was insanely cute (its his God-mode outfit)
