- Part 1 - THE DESIGN
In this video series i remove the diesel engine and upgrade to an all electric motor sailboat.
Sailboat diesel to electric boat conversion.
In this video (Part 1) I discuss the electric sailboat motor design. What are the components of electric sailboat motor conversion and where i got all my electric sailboat motor conversion components.
Electric Drive Engineering has been acquired by Jack, who is basically selling the holly grail, a easy, all in one system. Check them out a Powerflow Marine. Basically the refined final version to what i have.

Large pulley : 2012-30 with 44-8m-30 pulley
(22-8-30 = 22teeth-?-30mm (shaft?))
[Kit Elec Shop offers you a 2.0 ratio transmission pack.
The distance between the axes is about 222 mm.
This pack contains :
- a HTD pulley of 22 teeth width 30mm and its Taper Lock 1008 in diameter 7/8 inch ;
- a 44 teeth HTD sprocket and its Taper Lock 2012 in 30 mm diameter;
- a HTD 720-8M-30 belt.]

*YOUR SAFETY AND THE CORRECT AND SAFE OPERATION OF ALL YOUR GEAR IS 100% YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. NOTHING IN THIS VIDEO SHOULD OVERRIDE THAT
Oh thank you so much, I was totally confused when searching how to convert. Except if you buy the "special converting kits" or "sailboat electric motors", where you pay thousands of euro and then it's simpler lol
Super informative Tymon! Keep up the good work!
Very interesting, keep your channel going.
Thanks Tom. I will do 👍
Hi, researching, seen your Q's on OpenRov, but remember watching this when published.
12 months on, hindsight thoughts, etc, would be interesting.
I know you said the guy from thunder was pushing 72v, but any reason you simply didn't go with their 12KW Cooled 48v Kit for $3.5K (no mounting).
Electric drive has 10kW kit, no price listed, like motenergy, guess I'll have to call them.
But, wonder if 10kW will satisfy.
12kw would have been fine I just wouldn’t have had that slight extra power the vary rare times I’ve used it. You’ll have to relook at the graph in the third part of my motor series to see what speed you’ll be missing out on (as per my boat). Also something to note, when there was heaps of growth on the bottom of my boat I basically only had half speed (ie batteries ran out much quicker)
Why not direct Shaft drive? Can it regen?
If it turns it should be able to regenerate power bud 👍
Why Liquid cooled? Isn't that more complicated and error prone than air-cooling?
With the amount of power capable of being transferred, and the heat that creates, I think liquid is the best means of achieving cooling. With my setup at least
Would you have liked a Saildrive and opted for a dropinsystem with the Shaftdrive?
Saildrive is only beneficial with alignment. Doing away with the coupler and aligning the motor assembly would be the benefits. My system works well tho
@@slightadrift I have heared it is benificial for Regen to have a saildrive.
Not sure sorry mate
Gearboxes and Belts is something i hope to avoide.
Hey Tymon, we sent you a message on Instagram recently and would love to get some info 😇
