After reviewing the quality of the still images form the Nikon D600 I thought I should do the same type of field review for the video quality of the Nikon D600.
I had the perfect opportunity to put the video capability of the D600 to the test when my friend Graham Colton came to town to play a show.
All LIVE video shown is this video was shot with one Nikon D600 and various different pro Nikon lenses.
I was very happy with the results of the video quality from this camera. Sure there is the one current downside where you can not change the f stop during video recording but to me that is minor.
The video is clean, colorful and sharp. I now have no reason to grab my d7000 to shoot video since this D600 is full frame and allows me to get wider coverage for my videos. I hate grabbing the D7000 and having to put a fisheye on it to get a wide enough shot.
The video quality of this camera sealed my final all around thoughts about this camera. It offeres you not only great stills in low light and any other situation but very very good video quality to boot.

not at all. It is what it is and people need to stop complaining because its not a big deal at all.
bit rate to small? Broadcast TV uses gopros and iphones and stuff these days. The d600 is perfectly fine.
Good review man. I thought the video looked pretty good and the audio quality when you used that wireless mic was warm and sounded a lot better than i expect. I just recently purchased a d600 and i am very happy. Added a Nikon 70-200 f4 as of Saturday. The VR is awesome and i can't wait to test the video with it.
This camera is not supposed to be compared to something that is $1500 more.
No, its from the sound board. The built in mics are like any other cameras, they suck.
You cant use a viewfinder when shooting video.
I really recommend D600... I got one and It's the best upgrade for someone that has a DX dslr.
yea its shaky I was only using a mono pod. That has nothing to do with the cameras capability though.
Nikon is currently working on new firmware update for the D600. The update will contain a fix for the Live View aperture "bug" (currently you cannot change the aperture in Live View during video).
Yes, you can. Even on the D7000, it is possible with D lenses. You need to enable this within the settings first, though: Controls / Command Dials / Aperture Settings
Something else, If you buy a D series Nikon lens You can simply use the aperture ring and make aperture adjustments while shooting. Jared makes a good point, You don't need to do this very often

The general rule is that you set the shutter speed to twice the fame rate so if your shooting 1080p at 24fps, your shutter should be around 1/40th or 1/50th.
why is that the d800 has better image quality than d4, d3x etc? whats the point for being more costly
Jared, I'm thinking of buying one of these but it seems the sensor dust problem is big, and it hasn't been resolved by Nikon. Have you had sensor dust issues with yours?
it could be on your end, the original does not show this at all.
If you use lenses with mechanical aperture ring, like the 50mm 1.4 af-d or previous generation 28-70mm 2.8... you actually can change aperture while recording. And of course the complete back catalogue of older manual Nikkor lenses... Not expensive and easy to find. Smoother manual focus is an extra bonus.
So not a big issue.
i saw aliasing on the guitar edge. seems like nikon hadn't fixed it yet. Canon already addressed that problem on the 5dm3. But the video is sharp.
I've heard about the oil/dust issue, which is annoying, but doesn't seem like a deal breaker since Nikon will repair the issue/clean you sensor once the spots start to form. I've also read that after 3k shots the spots stop forming, though I'm not looking forward to buying a new camera just to use for a week and send it in for calming/repair.

How does the video quality hold up today? As I rambled on your other videos…. Wanting to move from D300s to full frame at same level or better body.. mostly for stills, but want some full frame video of good quality. Using vintage lenses and want the 80-200 year old lenses or retro designs.. Twist 60, Lensbaby and Lomography etc. In fact I don’t need 4K. 1080p for my current project might be just fine… I think. To be out take stills, then flip the button and shoot the same or similar gamma and same lens and sensor so stills and video look like they are from same event or universe…. The video is highly compressed even for 10 years ago. I do have an Atomos Ninja V. Did this Nikon play well with recorders? Picking up the 24fps? I older Nikon’s never did.. and of course the modern Z6II do just fine. Anyway tons of killer deals on D610 used and it’s tempting to go that route for a year or so and put of mirrorless until a Z6III that inherits some of the better aspects of the Z9 that just came out…. Or to commit more $$$ for a new/used Z9 or even a Z8 if that comes out in a year..
I did not have these issues thats why. i know some people do but I did not see anything.
I'm not having any problems with my D600. Nothing my rocket blower has corrected. I just shot at F/6.3 against a white background and didn't have much issue. No specs creeping up and no yellow corners.
Buy a Tokina 11-16mm for your D7000 it's such a great lens. Probably my most used lens it is about equivalent to the 14-24 on FX! Quite interesting how highly you recommend the D600 as I was considering upgrading to FX however the focus area is just too small compared to my D7000 or my fathers D700. Plus it would be much better if the camera had a higher burst rate and full magnesium body like the D7000.

Jared the 5DM3 is only $700 more not $1500! brand new mark 3s are on sale all the time for $2700.
Just asking, if I would use a old nikon lense nonfrom the G series with the Aperture control on the lens itself would it be possible for me to change aperture without stopping recording?
Is there any color correction, or is it all straight from the camera?
the video is not bad, i personally would not use a DSLR for video work, too much of a compromise in my view, i would have shot the gig with a HPX255 from Panasonic, had a gppro hero 3 mounted at the side of the stage pointing to the audience and another at the back of he venue shooting from there, a zoom h2 mounted at the rear/side to capture audience noise and another h2 connected to the desk, brought it all together on a PC (macs are evil). but with what you have it's a good video.
It's NikonRumors reported that Nikon is releasing a firmware update that allows the D600 to change aperture during Live View. Hopefully it's true, cause a camera at this price should have it anyway.
can cameras like the a77 use the evf to shoot video?
Also to add to that if you are worried about the bit rate and quality you can get the atomos ninja 2 it will capture uncompressed prores for final cut from the HDMI port.
Also to make sure your HDMI is at 100% frame size get the latest firmware.
I'm curious as to what F-stop you use with the D4 when you are sitting at your computer. My videos look a little soft at f3-4, are you using sharpening?
Would you use a canon m50 or a nikon d600 for shooting video especially in the street, restaurants, cafes etc?

Yes it is possible to change aperture on lenses with an aperture ring.
Great music. One nit, there is NO dedicated AF-ON button on th D600. Like the D7000 you must assign the AF-AE Lock button to AF-ON in the menu..

I guess there was only jared filming? the series of angles especially the guitar closeup's didn't often match what part was being played - picking parts showed him strumming and the pick was present one second then disappeared a split second later only to reappear. I guess that's not the point of the video but I I just noticed it
Losing aperture control while recording as opposed to what? I thought the D4 also loses aperture control while recording video as well?
What do you think the D7000s successor will be like?

There is suppose to be a soon to be released firmware update so that changing aperture on G series lenses will be possible in Live View mode. Hopefully it will also fix the 95% HDMI output issue for external recording.
I'd say that's more a result from the compression that RUclips has rather than the camera. I wouldn't take the video quality on a RUclips video as gospel of the cameras capabilities.

Hey Jared, With regards to shutter speed, rather than making sure you double the fps, shouldn't it be decided more by matching your fps to the mains supply to avoid the lights banding? I know in the uk we keep it to 50fps due to the fact all lights are supplied with 50v ac voltage, i believe the states is 60ac voltage so surely you'd want to lock it at that? Granted you dont always get banding, but for indoor lighting it can be extremely noticeable

You probably know already but was good news when I heard Nikon's firmware release soon should fix the issue of not being able to change aperture while recording :)
Jared, there is an update comming for the D600 to fix the aperature during video (so you will be able to change aperature during liveview!!).
yup just me shooting with one camera and cutting in other angles just to cut them in.
I'm just comparing the videos not the price point. Even the 650d already addressed the issue on the digic5. If moire & aliasing is on the d600 maybe it's on the d800 as well. Hmmm.. what's the use of AA filter then..
i have the d600 for a month now and havnt shot one piece of video, this has changed my mind. Nice job! i seen video with the Tamron 24-70 VC. and the VC really comes into play. cant wait for nikons new range of G 2.8's, hopefully they'll include VR. Thoughts?
Mine looks like it only got a bit of dust, and it did not stick there. Did the "clean sensor" thing and blowed some air with the mirror up and everything was fine after that.
"shutter" speeds seemed a little high. i think with video you want 1/25 when shooting 25fps or 1/30 when shooting 30fps. that was why you got that look at 2:36 with his arms.

I think the video quality is great, for a music video i would just stabilize the footage in after effects..
Hey Jared, you had a video on your old loft with a tall guy, it was kind of a 5 min portrait, I think it was Adam but I've looked for the video I can't find it ... It was a flash head and a speedlight set up and you were seeing the pictures in the computer at the same time of the shooting ... Jared, did you notice any aliasing on the D600? I didn't see any on your videos, with the exception of a tiny bit on the cabinets during the first shot and some on the guitar strings in the last shot (at some points, it was rather bad). Perhaps you took some footage other than just Graham and you might have noticed it? It seems to be a pretty big issue when shooting outside (buildings, power lines, etc). I really want to consider a D600 for video, but aliasing has been a major problem for others and there's really no way to fix it in post without going in and editing each frame, which is a tremendous pain in the rear.
I already have a D7100, but I'd really like to step up to full frame for the better low-light performance and wider shots. The D600 seems to be the sweet spot right now, in terms of price.

I bought this camera and had it 1 week. Its been with Nikon getting oil splatters of the sensor ! This seems to be a problem with this camera. Google.. Oil on sensor D600
your shutter speed wants to be double the frame rate so if your shooting at 25fps the 1/50 or 60fps then 1/120 never any lower than double the frame rate

I love my D7000 Or video. I cannot justify the higher price of the D600 although it looks like a very nice camera. A few things to consider: higher megapixel

Great vids Jared, thanks! Question, I'm looking at the d600 and the d7000, to break into video/film hobby. What is the this I hear the the Nikon bit rate is too small for broadcast quality? Just in case..... should I just go Canon. My first slr was an canon A1 back in 1980. lol. My last slr was an N90, and I consider myself a "Nikon" guy. No longer have lenses and such, so starting new. Will be doing post on Mac/Final Cut. Should I just go Canon? Thanks again!

yes it is supposed to be compared to the 5D3, and even if you used the D800 or D4 it's the same issues, because they are all almost the same vid, actually the D800 has better video than the D4,everything isn't about how much money something cost, and with that said, I do think the Nikon D600 is a cool camera for the money, but the camera world is changing fast, and Nikon and Canon better keep up with companies like Panasonic with the GH3 or they will fall behind fast, did someone say flip screen

D7000 is a GREAT camera... videos are awesome on that, i totally love it. D600 is much more expensive... i see no difference between the two cameras, both do great videos... (even thought the d600 is a full frame camera).
Ok Mr fussy. My point still stands. The D600 could be a much better camera and if you already have a D7000 and a suite of DX lenses then it is simply not worth the money for most.
Hi Jared, great work. I'm picking this camera up tomorrow to do about an hour of video at 1080p 24fps and I'm wondering which sd card size I should pickup, I'm thinking at least a 32 gig extreme pro, but I have no idea how many minutes of video that will be.
Higher megapixel means larger file sizes. FX more expensive lenses.
The quality is actually quite mediocre. Aliasing problems and moire paterns all over the place.
Also what's up with the frame drops all the over the place during the show like @ 3:35?
Broadcast quality has to be 50 mbps for most companies. and the canons give you that and more with MagicLantern installed it them, just being honest. im in the video filed, I know .
Can you do a video on interacting with clients. I have the basics but if possible would you be able to give insider tips on how to sell yourself to the client?
Yeah, got my D7000 early september. if i knew about the release of the D600 i would of wait. But still, not complaining about the D7000 though :)

Nikon Rumors stated that the soon-to-come firmware upgrade will be fixing the whole can-not-change-aperture-in-video dilemma.
