    If you are interested in picking up a Nikon D610 it is pretty much going to be the same as the D600 Review.
    When Nikon announced the D600 it was pretty much no big surprise. What was a big surprise was the fact that they would have it before Photokina and months before Canons 6D.
    The D600 is the first "affordable" FX Camera from Nikon at clocks in at $2,099.99 at AllensCamera.com. Now I am not going to sit here and run down the tech specs as most of you already know what they are. You also know that the most important thing about the camera are not the specs but how it actually handles in the real world shooting environment. AKA a "Real World Review" TM
    What I am going to try and do is give you my straight up feedback from using the camera in a tough shooting situation of a night high school football game. If a camera can handle low light shooting and being pushed to its limits than it can handle everything and anything.
    First things first this camera is pretty small yet it feels very nice in the hands. The one I shot with did not have the vertical grip yet shooting vertical really was not a problem at all. The screen is huge and clear and the buttons are will be very familiar to anyone who has shot or held a D800, D800E or Nikon D4. There is something to be said for keeping the same button set up from camera to camera to camera. The same holds true for the menu system. Nikon does a great job keeping the menus consistant from one body to the next.
    The real tell tail sign of a quality camera to me is how it handles in low light situations. All I can say is this camera passed the low light shooting test with flying colors!!! I pushed it to its max normal ISO of 6400 for shooting football and the grain structure looks amazing to me. It looks almost like a film grain which is what I am ok with seeing in my images.
    I do hear complaining about noise quit often from people who zoom in on the file on their computer and thing that there should be no grain. Or they ask me what noise reduction software do I use to get rid of the grain. The answer to that is I DO NOT USE ANY NOISE REDUCTION SOFTWARE. I welcome the dots of grain and accept them with open arms as normal.
    I speak to this in the video above but if your exposure is close, somewhere around spot on to a half of a stop off you will not have to worry about grain becoming an issue. Grain and noise become and issue when you totally miss your exposure and try to bring back the file. When you push the files to the max is when you start to see issues with the image. But keep in mind thats not the camera fault, thats the fault of the exposure and who ever set it, wink wink.
    The bottom line is this camera passes the high ISO test from its normal range of 6400 ISO. Beyond that I did not push it to the H modes as they are not recommended. Since the camera did so well at 6400, there is no doubt in my mind it will hold up at the lower ISOs. You can see some examples of 800 and 1000 ISO with some sideline portraits I took of Sam with the 14-24 2.8. Those files are very clean, colorful and sharp.

    Ten years after you made this, I am waiting for a D600 to be delivered to my house. Two more days. Upgrading from a D70. I appreciate your video, I learned more about the camera and the special lighting conditions of the football field.

      @@CreateTimeToListen I got a 24-120 f/4 but resisted the 50 f/1.8 . The 50 is excellent for product photos when selling online and just plain sharp. Also consider using GIMP on your computer for images, it is free and good. I like the full frame, and wish you success and happiness with your camera.

      Thanks @@minnesnowtan9970. I still have some lenses from my Nikon F80 that I can recover. I've used those on the D70 as well. But will be looking for better ones later on. A 50 mm 1.4 or 1.8 is certainly a good investment.

    I pushed the d800 to 6400 when i was shooting a concert and was very pleased with the results. I did post that RAW file as well for everyone to play with. But I do see what you are saying about it at higher ISO. The Mark III is much better at higher ISO's.

    Lock in on Single and recompose when your shooting objects not moving and when you are shooting moving objects in continuos move the focus points to the outside with dynamic 21 or 9.

    I am so impressed by your getting out and really using this camera. So many self proclaimed youtube photo gurus snap a few shots, or show what they shot earlier, or just talk about the camera. You show the camera out in the real world . So much appreciated. Im a professional, as I've been paid for weddings, events, portraits. I've upgraded some to a higher mp DX camera D7200, I still use the D700, and was using the D7000. I also use a Pentax k3, and K1.....my super low light beast great for receptions, concerts. I was looking to upgrade the D7000, and the fullframe D610 seemed to fit perfactly, but I was kind of second guessing my choice. I ran into that buffer issue, but your right; it can be worked around. I Haven't actually job tested the 610 yet. Thank you for such an indepth, hands on review. Much appreciated. I'm not worried any longer.

    I live by that rule and like I said in my written review on the web page that when you step up to the full frame game its time to use better glass. Of course some people wont and will complain about how noisy their images up but we cant control that.

    @MattDiffey 12 лет назад

    I was referring to Canon shooters more than that. Coming from a D90 you won't really see a difference as the D600 can go a stop lower, to ISO 100, than the D90's ISO 200, but most shooters have the luxury of being able to shoot f/1.2 and f/1.4 at ISO 100 all day, Adding a variable ND filter means extra glass in front of your lens where you might want a CPL etc., and it is a hassle and expenditure that may well get you to D800 prices if you're buying a good ND for every lens.

    As for the small centralized area of the 39 focus points: if you ever want to use a DX lens (thus going into DX crop mode), the focus points cover the view. Whole point of going FX is to use that full frame sensor, though.

  • @froknowsphoto
    @froknowsphoto  12 лет назад

    Have you used the d600 to make the statement? They have to have differences between the cameras or this would just be a d800. Sure id love to have 51 focus points and the be able to change the aperture during live view but if you want all that your answer is a d800.

  • @froknowsphoto

    well, there are a lot of factors, first sensor size, nikon's d600 and d4 are both full frame sensor (which means the sensor is about 38% bigger and captures more light naturally), then, both sensors and processors are newer (400d is a 2006 camera), then raw files are less compressed which preserves more quality, and finally nikon's algorithms (from own experience) clean noise much better, with almost no luminance noise, even i work with my d5100 at 6400-12800 without much trouble

    Its not a deal breaker to me honestly. 1/4000th of a second is perfectly acceptable it just about all situations. Nikon doesn't have a 1.2 lens to let that much light in but they do have the 1.4. And honestly if you need to shoot at 1/4000th at F2.8 or 3.2 you can still blow the backgorund out and the wedding client wont know that difference.

    I'm slightly surprised and happy I watched this video. I waited 8 months before buying the D600 because I was torn over the D800. I had a choice. More expensive camera vs. entry level Camera and some new glass.
    What I ended up with was the D600, a af-s 28mm 1.8G and the af-s 85mm 1.8G.
    It gives a a warm feeling watching this video 3 months after my purchase and basically I've followed your advice. Or better put let my head rule my heart.
    Great Video Jared.

    other way around. The "sweet spot" on an fx lens is in the centre. since a dx lens doesnt use the entire rear element theres almost no way of getting vignetting. The only issue would be your focal length shown isnt the one your getting

    Thanx for the great D600 introduction!! Problem is: the D600 body alone may be in financial reach for a lot of people, but getting all the (expensive) FX glass might be a big thing! So either you´re affluent enough for this change to FX anyway (if so, just go for it!) or, being just an enthusiast. even one with pro ambitions, really think closely, if you really need that, if you´re already well equipped with your DX-gear! As you say Jared: it´s abt. using what you have to the full extent!

    Technically its the other way around, grain is a term that can be used to describe noise on a digital sensor, since the noise is literally that. Signals generated by amplification and interference.

  • @NotNudeDude
    @NotNudeDude 11 лет назад

    Depends, if you want to do landscapes, the FX will really be helpful, meanwhile the 1.3 crop will get you closer to your subject. Also you'll have ISO limitations in the D7000, i wouldnt like to use softwares to remove noise or grain as it would smoothen the image leading to loss of crucial sharpness

    First, Ken does not shoot RAW, if he shot RAW this would be more of a non issue than it already is. I see no issues with my D4, I see no issues with the D600 and I am pretty sure they say its an issue with the tint of the screen. But in all honesty it does not matter and I have seen no such issue with my images.
    Ken needs to shoot RAW and stop pixel peeping.

    So I do these high school sports all the time. I use my d800 and a sigma 70-200 2.8. I've found I like shooting at 1/500 f/4 and ISO 10000 (our lights aren't as good). I really do like that 300 2.8. That's my dream lens right there!

    Regarding the speed of the AF, have you considered changing the default settings in the camera (which cripple its AF speed)? Notably setting the focus-delay to 'Off', and the focus priority to 'Release'. The difference is night and day.

    What a classic review, one of my favs. Gonna be using the D610 to shoot some karate and figure skating for a provincial competition coming up here in Canada and this hit the spot .

    You really need to publish your own magazine. "ProFroPhoto" rolls off the tongue. Great stuff man keep up the great work!

    I have a d7000 and have shot it at 4000 ISO without an issue. There are way to many things that could be issues to tell you if there is a problem with the camera. But in many cases there tends to be some human error involving settings or lenses that its hard to say. You can tweet me a picture with your settings and I can tell you if there is an issue.

    Keep in mind when Jared says "quality glass" you can snap yourself up a AF-S 50mm f/1.8G (or even the f/1.8D) for between $150-$220 USD... and that 50mm is a VERY quality piece of glass.
    It's definitely not 24-70 quality, but it's a wicked all-around lens, if you don't mind cropping, you can do your running kids, EXCELLENT portrait lens, fast enough for astro photography, night photography, video...
    So you don't need to spend $1000 on glass.

    this video came up just in time! I'm about to order a new camera and it's between the d800 and d600. I'm ordering after I finish watching this video.

    Great review, Jared. It let us see the camera in a real life situation. I saw a note in the Lightroom 4.2 readme that said support for the D600 is preliminary, so there's a small chance edited photos might look different if reopened once D600 support is official. I imagine most will take that chance rather than not being able to edit anything.

    Jared will probably have a much better comment, but I was in the same situation you were in and I ended up getting two lenses. I find the 24-70 a bit of a compromise for portraits. 70mm frames weird for me, for some reason. I ended up with the 14-24 for landscape photos and a dedicated 85/1.8D that I bought used. It's fantastic.
