This video shows you how to install a new TRQ thermostat and housing in your 2017-2022 GMC Acadia. The thermostat controls the flow of coolant in your vehicle’s engine. When a thermostat fails, it can lead to overheating, which will damage the engine. One sign of a faulty thermostat is a cool upper radiator hose when the engine is at full operating temperature. It’s important to replace the thermostat immediately if you suspect it is failing.

I just took my 2019 Acadia yesterday to the dealership for the steering sensor issue as well, they advised it’s the coolant thermostat….but it’s on back order with no idea when it will be available. Last night my check engine light came on, had it diagnosed at the local auto parts store and the code is related to the thermostat as well. Why aren’t they just doing a recall on the coolant thermostat?? With how many people I’ve seen with the same problem it only seems right for GM to do. These thermostats are supposed to last way longer than 3 years!!
Thanks for the detailed instructions. I didn't take the battery and fuse box out. It made getting the bolt out/in for the thermostat pipe a little difficult, but not too bad. I tied a 3 foot piece of dental floss to the bolt in case I dropped it, which I did several times. Just pull up the floss and you got your bolt back! The floss will break once you tighten the bolt.

Thanks for the video! It’s an amazing source. A couple points; 1) don’t replace the tube, just replace the seal on it, this way you don’t need to remove the battery and etc. 2) you must remove the hose from the pipe like he did or you will get coolant everywhere! 3) spend the $7 and also replace the temp sensor while you’re at it, you have to remove the heads or thermostat to get to it down the road if it goes bad. 4) before you remove the intake manifold blow the engine bay out really well with air /leaf blower, try and get all the cavities because the sand and dirt will fall into the heads if you don’t and it’s not good.

This job seemed daunting, but with your video I was able to anticipate issues and be prepared. I replaced the thermostat, coolant temperature sensor and spark plugs on a 2017 Acadia in a couple of hours. On note- I was able to do it without removing the battery etc. Thanks for the incredibly helpful video!
We just took our 18’ Acadia with 55k miles in this morning for the same thing this is. Temp gauge wouldn’t read intermittently, finally got a code and check engine light. I’ve replaced many thermostats in many vehicles in my life, but wow…. This would’ve been a little project. The dealer didn’t know at first we had an extended warranty, (GM certified) they said around $1300 if we didn’t have that. I probably would’ve done this myself before I paid that, I just hope they have a good tech working on it, lots of things have to be taken apart. Great detailed video by the way, you’re very careful and professional!
I was getting ready to change it my self until I came across a forum. And someone in the comments advice to reset the codes with the code reader. Sometimes the sensors glitches and throws a fault. I did as he said, It work!!! The power steering went back to normal and started blowing cold air again . But I'm still saving this video just incase I have future issues .
Just changed it on my 2020 Chevy Blazer 3.6 engine which is the exact same engine as this Acadia. Thanks to you Guys I saved myself $800 from the dealership rip offs
Thank you for doing such a detailed video. I completed the repair on my Cadillac XT5 in 4 hours. I did not remove the battery or tray because I had enough room to work in the caddy. I also changed out the coolant sensor since it was easy to get to with tstat out. A 15mm clawfoot socket/wrench makes the sensor change easier.
What a great detailed video which saved me a ton of money by doing it myself. I did not remove the battery box and left the radiator hose attached to the pipe. I also changed out the coolant temperature sensor since it was easy to access with the thermostat out. Sensor was under $10 so it makes since replace while apart. Also replaced 6 manifold gaskets.

I think everyone is miss diagnosing a problem with all these engines. It's a P0128 code that is generated along with a steering message, cooling fans run on high, temp gage is driven to 0 and AC is disabled. This code has happened 4 times in 77K miles on my 2018 Acadia. The book has you replace the temp probe and the thermostat as shown in this video. Of all the evidence I see on these videos I don't see any thing that would indicate they are corroded or defective. I think its a soft ware fault, a difference in the calculated temp with the actual temp. My engine/code diagnostic unit(OBD) has not seen any interruption in the CWT (coolant water temp) indications, its usually 168-171' F. Just clear the code with the erase button and everything works fine. I actually went out and bought all the parts thinking I needed to do it repair. I am just going to keep clearing the code every once in a while when It pops up until I see other issues with temp readings or leaks or other irregularities.
Same exact problem im at 89k and AC doesn’t engage. Fan consistently runs on high with the steering message. I should just clear it?
@@caelan3979 Yes. I have done it 4 times, instantly everything starts to operate perfectly. Till the next event.
I was disconnecting the battery every time i got the steering reduced message. My approach was the same, just keep resetting and wait till it breaks. Only problem is it never does. First you get the steering reduced. If you let it go, it finally resets itself, then comes back. Eventually throws a P0128. If you still let it go, the code also clears. But occasionally it disables the A/C. When that happens, disconnect the battery and all is good again. Still havent figured it out but, changed the thermostat tonight only because the guage is shy of the middle when fully hot. and it tends to be slightly lower than that from time to time which is when i seem to get the P0128. We will see if this makes a difference. Needed to change spark plugs anyways so was the perfect time to try the thermostat. Not real hopeful but we will see.
**Update** It's been a month or so with no more issues. Appears to have fixed it.
@@bobwinters704 My observation is similar to yours, but I haven't replaced anything yet. I would be curious to hear if the issue returns. When you changed the thermostat, did you replace the small black o-rings? If so, can you give a part number or guidance on the size or where to get them?
It’s the thermostat, we do these daily. The coolant temp doesn’t reach operational temp in a predetermined amount of time and that’s what sets the code, thermostat sticks open, so it’s bypassing even on cold starts.

Watched the video and followed the steps for changing the thermostat. I must say it was quite a task with only helf of my tools being available. Overall took less than 4 hours along with double checking all connections. Thank you so much for the information!!

This is a fantastic guide, thank you. I didn't remove the battery tray and I was still able to access that 10mm bolt holding the thermostat tube. I think that was the only thing I did differently. I bought all my parts from Chevrolet parts counter. $139 for thermostat, $11 for the thermostat o-ring, x2 small black o-rings for those fuel lines at $6 each, and i also replaced the six green small intake manifold gaskets at $7 each. 3 hours of work (i took it nice and slow). About $220 total cost and 3 hours of work. Not sure how that compares to dealership or mechanic charges.

I encountered this thermostat issue (Water Outlet) a few weeks ago on my 2019 Cadillac XT5 with 54,000 miles. I was getting a "Steering Assist Reduced - Drive with Care" message on the DIC display. I took the car to an AutoZone to pull the code which was P0128. My bumper-to-bumper warranty had recently expired @ 50K but, my Power Train warranty was still active. I took my car to the Cadillac dealership and they were very familiar with this issue having become a recurring problem with the 3.6L engine. As it turned out, my dealership covered the thermostat replacement 100% under my Power Train warranty. Needless to say, I was extremely please that I dodged a significant repair charge of around $1400.00!

Thank you for the video, I just did it today, and the hardest part was replacing the temperature sensor, I got it because it was exposed and made more sense to me to do it. Also, I didn't take the battery off.
@TRQ Alright there's one step in this tutorial that I found unnecessary. You don't need to take the battery and electrics out that's on the battery. Much room to get the side 10mm bolt. Just thought I'd say that in case it helps someone else get it done faster.
What kind of O ring is that for the 2 little fittings you put on connecting back that you used the hook tool on at the 20:24 mark of the video?

Great video. Thank you so much. I did this repair on my 2019 Acadia after the P0128 DTC kept coming back (along with check engine light) even after battery disconnects. I used a 12678779 thermostat (includes o-ring), 12648665 (x6) intake manifold gaskets (in retrospect this replacement didn't seem necessary to me, but I already had the parts....repair video is ruclips.net/video/lAw1whCaIs4/видео.html), 12648547 (x2) small black o-rings, silcone lubricant spray for the o-rings, and ~6 quarts of 50/50 dex-cool anti-freeze. Reality is that some/all of the wire harness routing clips will break when you remove them, so if you care about them you should also buy some replacements.
I was able to complete the repair without removing the battery and PCM. Doing it this way makes removing the bolt holding the metal pipe (~14:15 in the video) a little tricky because it is a blind removal/insertion, but it is doable. There are actually 2 10mm bolts in that area which are ~2" apart. You want the one closer to the passenger compartment. Also I did not remove the rubber hose (~13:30 in the video).
Did you change manifold gasket before putting back together?

If your like me and you like short cuts (saves me book time allowing me to cheat the time). Theres no need and removing the battery and its related components also no need to remove the lower hose from the pipe. The book tells you to do these things also it tells you to remove the bank 1 fuel rail which no of these are necessary.
The foam sound insulator, (its a b#@$h to get out) I just took a box knife and cut the portion that was blocking the bolt that holds the pipe and discarded.

This step-by-step was excellent and I successfully replaced the thermostat and the coolant temperature sensor on my 2017 Acadia that was getting the check engine errors. The only thing that did not match the video was that when I turned the valve to drain the radiator, nothing came out even though it was not empty. I was able to rotate it 90 degrees and tried back and forth but still nothing came out. I have had no issues since the repair was completed a few weeks ago.

My ‘18 Acadia Denali doesn’t have a check engine light at the moment but the fan is blowing on high and I’m not getting a read on my gauge on my dash. With this I will be more prepared as I do not have $1k+ to throw into my vehicle right now.

While reading some comment's here I read about possible software issue. I took the advice of resetting the code(poors man method by disco battery). Everything works now, thermostat and AC. I will suggest to do that before going a more expensive way.
You mentioned something about the fuel lines. Can you elaborate also what parts would I need. I have to do this but have never done it it.
No gasket material or anything for the housing? At 89 inch pounds needs some kind of gasket material???

I just did my 2018 Cadillac XT5 and I had enough room without taking the battery out. I did disconnect the negative of course.
I replaced the thermostat on my Cadillac XT5 it has tons more room than the Acadia you don't have to remove the battery only took 2 hours don't know why the thermostat comes with pipe and housing the thermostat comes out of the housing just push and twist seems like way overkill . The hardest part of the job was finding the thermostat (out of stock) pandemic really messed things up

Excellent video and makes me confident I could accomplish the repair if my lady friend gives me the job. That said, who was the ignoramus that came up with this design? The approval/packaging engineer isn't much better. GM should be ashamed for foisting this abortion on their customers. $1,300 for a thermostat replacement? Outrageous 🙄
If you have an Acadia, find a junkyard and leave it there. All problems solved.

Around the 16 minute mark, what are those two small pipes called? Or do you have a part number for them? I slid the one closest to the cab out easily, but the one further away from the cab, I snapped the tip of it. I retrieved the tip easily and It was able to slide back in and seal up just fine with the tiny o ring, but I’m going to want to replace it eventually. Every time I try to explain that piece to someone, we can never find it. Anybody know the part number? It would be much appreciated.

Just curious, I had this done at the dealership under the extended warranty. So I got it back a couple days ago and it’s staying on the notch just below the halfway mark on the temp gauge and my obd reader says it’s at 194 degrees. (I haven’t gotten another code yet) Is this the correct temp you got? Just asking before I take it back to the dealership.
Just curious what year Acadia do you have? Mine is 22 AT4 had the steering reduced and ESC message come on still had to drive it the next day no message talked to my dealer and they said there's no stored codes idk
Seriously mate....... I just seen you take a bolt out above open inlets with nothing covering them or in them......... are you trying to show people how to drop a bolt into a cylinder? .......... that's mechanics 101 to cover that up! .... then there's the o-ring which you could drop into the run underneath, again not covered up. Gloves don't make you professional using your brain does.

What an unbelievably ridiculous amount of disassembly to get to such a benign part. Especially for something that's such a common problem with these vehicles they should issue a recall. I'm dealing with the same issue on vacation so apparently I'm going to have to drive home with no air conditioning. What an absolute effing joke.
