I was absolutely amazed at how perfectly they pulled off these characters. Considering how the developers *literally weren’t allowed to use brand new original designs for new characters like Koops and Toadsworth anymore* (apart from costumes like Professor Toad), they did an incredible job making these characters feel so original. I genuinely loved Professor Toad as a character, even if was just your average Toad. And the bosses are jam-packed with such vibrant personalities. In just the short amount of time of Tape’s boss battle, it’s become one of my favorite Paper Mario bosses. It doesn’t feel like you’re fighting a roll of tape, it feels like you’re fighting a badass gangsta’ that just happens to be a roll of tape. The only major issue I had with the game was how much Olivia blabbered on, and that you couldn’t speed up or skip her endless dialogue. Other than that, Intelligent Systems really outdid themselves.
Very well-said and I agree (though I wasn't the biggest fan of the Professor personally). They really did great with what they were working with, and the Legion could have easily been lazy and frustrating if they were even a little bit different in their execution. I really hope future games expand on these ideas more!

Thanks for sharing this one nonetheless, yeah it's definitely a bummer, but given the fact that TOK did make some steps back in the right direction character-wise (hey at least we got some costumed NPC's again!), I'm holding out hope that one day the series will regain that sense of it's old identity. I'm not counting on it though!
That was a great way to introduce the scissors as a legitimate threat, but I'm still asking myself how in the hell Jr. was able to survive that by just taking some baths!
Another thing i like about the stationary that i saw pointed out somwhere is that ofthen there attitud is exactly what you DONT use the tool for in game. Colored pencils are a way for children to try to draw without there being high standerds and expiriment but jean wants everything to be perfect and loves old things because there “old school” Rubber bands are a easy way to get somthing in a certain stance without having to worry about it to much but rubber band demands everybody to look at him and only him. Hole punches can be used to make things look neat but he is frantic and wierd. And where the holes in agenda’s and such are the backbone of keeping them together the hole puncher is a bit of a coward that hides until mario does somthing for him and is in a certain way spineless. Tape is a way to showcase things upfront and clearly but in-game he’s shady and hides important things like mario’s panels. Sissiors are made to creat stuff by sepersting but the in game sissiors just destroys everything. And lastely staples kan keep thing nice and clean but in game its a savage dog
Rubber Band is my favorite boss actually! They (I'm pretty sure that it's a hive mind sorta creature) had the best pre-boss section, with Tschaikowsky remix, no less! My least favorite member of the Legion of Stationery would be Tape, because he had little to no connection to his environment... But he does have a very challenging battle.

I quite enjoy the Rubber Band battle as well, but I'd say my favorites are the Hole Puncher (for the music and creepiness of it all) and the Scissors (for his characterization and for being the hardest foe in my opinion, I was definitely surprised to be one-shot killed right before defeating him my first try!)
Those were a fun one as well! I only didn't like that fight as much as others because it was a little on the easy side (which of course made sense since they were the first Stationery fight and all).
I love every, the things I love about them are 1. I love the pencils because of its battle mechanics. 2. I like the rubber band because of its dramatic death. 3. The hole punch is because of his battle music. 4. Tape. Tape.... I hate tape. 5. The scissors is really powerful and I like a challenge and 6. Stapler is like a cool dog. Olly is cool too because his sister is good while he's evil. I am sad about the ending :(

olly even says something like "you've seen one toad, you've seen them all!" feels like the devs airing their frustruations of the toads all being templates
to improve the story, they could have added a little more background on the origami craftsman, or the relationship of the Mushroom Kingdom and the other locations in terms of culture and history, as well as history that has built up into what we have to deal with. For example, they could have made each legionary from the Legion of Stationery to have a history with the locations they reside in, maybe the craftsman acquired or created them in those same locations, under the cultural methods of each civilization.
I love reading comments like this! I do agree that small tweaks could have made for a better experience overall. TOK is pretty great but it's frustrating to imagine how much greater it COULD have been with the smallest changes. Thanks for watching!
I actually felt sorry for the Legion Of Stationary once I saw what happened with Colored Pencils’ artwork after you defeat them. And with the Rubber Band and Hole Punch just wanting to entertain and have fun respectively... I kinda wish there would be a way to bring them back on the side of good at the end of the game.
I could imagine that if the Origami Craftsman was created for an older Paper Mario game and wasn't a Toad, he would look a bit like Smithy from Super Mario RPG.
Yeah something like that would have been really neat! I do understand why it had to be a Toad though, to give a reason for Olly to hate them (a dumb reason but a reason nonetheless)...but dammit giving the Toad a name and a beard or something would have gone a very long way!
as a longtime paper mario fan who also loves the combat system for origami king, i appreciate your take a lot. yes, the designs are cheesy, but their mechanics are insanely clever and the story doesn't just let them sit as comedic devices
It’s kind of funny actually, I’d never played a Paper Mario game (or Mario in general), but what actually got me to play it was the battle system, papery style, and Legion of Stationery (and the music.) I was surprised when I finished playing to find out that all the things that drew me in to the game were things that the original fans didn’t like. I loved the game, it was a really fun adventure, and I thought the LoS actually added so much to it, lol. I guess for people who had a lot more previously to compare it to, it would be disappointing in some ways. But it got me into Paper Mario, so I think they did well ^^ Also your video is very good and your voice was very pleasant :)

And yeah, while the game was a bit controversial when it was first announced, I feel that most fans, even fans of the older games, have warned up to it. It's not perfect, and the battle system especially is still quite divisive, but it was a great game and I'm really glad you loved it! If you're able to get your hands on a copy of the original game or The Thousand Year Door I highly recommend those (especially TTYD, it is legitimately a masterpiece despite some flaws of its own), and I've heard good things about Color Splash and especially Super Paper Mario as well!
Believe it or not you're the first person I've seen say that they were excited about the Legion since the trailer (since the reaction about them was pretty overwhelmingly negative) but in my opinion you were definitely correct to be excited!
Maybe its because Im a sucker for the Paper Gimmick overall, but yeah, I thought it was such a clever idea and I was hoping they wouldnt mess it up. Honestly, I love the Paper stuff, but I dont think they need to sacrifice story for it. Imagine a game as deep as TTYD but also with the paper gimmicks? That would be sick.

Yessssss. TOK is amazing, and I personally like it more than the originals, but at the same time I recognize objectively, its worse, so they have to take the good parts from it and add it to the TTYD formula for the ultimate PM experience.
I honestly think that this games story is second only to super in the series. It barely beats ttyd wich although its not that good of a story but its still impresive

If you don't mind a rambly response, I personally believe that TTYD's story is better - I replayed it recently and it just goes through so many different and unique twists and turns, it's not perfect and the main villains lack strong motivation, but I find it to be much more engaging and memorable, and I never got bored with what was going on whatsoever. I've never played Super (yet) or Color Splash, I can barely remember 64's story, Sticker Star can jump off a cliff and die, so that leaves Origami King. I plan to replay it one day to see if it this opinion holds, but while I found the story to be less good than TTYD's, strong characters like Olivia, Bowser/Jr., Bobby, etc helped it stand out and feel a lot more special. So the narrative itself is less good, but the characters and some specific moments really shine here and I remember a lot of really strong story beats that were absolutely fantastic and do rival TTYD in a lot of ways. Still, TTYD is in a league of it's own, and from what I've heard, so is Super, but considering the limitations Nintendo/Intelligent Systems has put on this series for whatever reason, it's remarkable that this game works as well as it does overall Sorry for the very long response and thanks so much for watching!
@@DieAntDie yeah i understand where people are coming from when they say ttyd is beter BTW 64 is just “oh no Bowser took peach” and Color splash is “oh no Bowser took Peach but he ends up being being controller by paint. Super however has a story thats worth playing the game for alone even if the gameplay is average and i highly suggest to play it. I dont mind the long response
Yeah, I do remember PM64's story being very simple, but it benefitted from the partners and some neat scenarios. I'm really looking forward to playing Super though, it's only taken me this long because I finally bought it recently, but it sounds like a lot of fun! Even if, like you said, the gameplay itself might be lacking.
I just realised that Origami King has the same thematic structure as Super Mario Odyssey, where it's all about the journey filled with wild and whacky setpieces.
The bosses in origami king are genuinely the most threatening and evil thing in the series. They all either torture or murder toads in hundreds. Tape literally has them strung up a tower. Also scissors just MURDERS bowser jr
There's only one thing keeping me from just accepting this game as its own thing: Bobby. Now, the problem isn't his character, his character arc, or how he leaves the party. In fact, were there no precedent on the latter, I would've praised the game for going in that direction. _However, there_ is _a precedent, and that event outright contradicts it, thereby forcing me to choose between the classic games or this one for canonicity._ This could've been avoided: explain that the circumstances behind the precedent from 64 and TTYD don't apply to Bobby for some reason, and I'd have been fine. Credibility would've been stretched rather thin, but it wouldn't be broken. But they didn't take the few minutes needed for even that, showing they _want_ the originals to be forgotten. Hard to like a game when it unironically dismisses its beloved predecessors (emphasis on the UN part. The ironic sense in Banjo Nuts and Bolts is perfectly fine).
Honestly I've thought about this issue before as well, and I've just come to appreciate TOK in a bubble, though I don't appreciate major retcons like that either. As you said, it literally would have been as easy as him having a line like "I have a defect" or something. Even if Mario games don't care about continuity like some of us do, and even if Nintendo wishes the first three games would be long forgotten, it's quite unfortunate and does serve as a frustrating plot hole. EDIT BECAUSE I HIT SEND TOO QUICKLY: I do appreciate that Bobby's death was very thematic, and had real plot ramifications regarding Olivia's decision at the end of the game. That was really great, they managed to make the most out of it, which is why I can still enjoy the plot device on its own despite it still kind of annoying me.
Technically, they're just a rubber band. However some people think they're female (including me), although it's highly likely none of the Legion have a canon gender.
Good video, but I think you are taking the racist villain too seriously. It sounds like you think the game is encouraging racism, which it isn’t. The big racist character literally dies and is never painted in a positive light until he realizes he was wrong.

No need to apologize! I don't blame you for interpreting it differently, but yeah when I was playing the game I was definitely laughing to myself thinking, "man if this was a story about human characters this'd be racist as hell!" But yeah it was also about how empty Olly's character felt by the end, considering his only trait was "hating all Toads/flat creatures because one of them wrote on him", which was one of my least-favorite aspects of the game. I mean the legion don't need defending, they are already amazing! (not tape tho. tape is awful, I hate how it locks the rings together and it gets to the point where you can ONLY move 2 rings at a time. The others are absolutely fantastic though!)

I like every game. They are all great. Most people hate sticker star but I don't. I've played every one but the 2 original ones

As someone who found the game’s basic combat mechanic really lacking, I actually really enjoyed all the boss fights.

This could've been avoided: explain that the circumstances behind the precedent from 64 and TTYD don't apply to Bobby for some reason, and I'd have been fine. Credibility would've been stretched rather thin, but it wouldn't be broken. But they didn't take the few minutes needed for even that, showing they _want_ the originals to be forgotten. Hard to like a game when it unironically dismisses its beloved predecessors (emphasis on the UN part. The ironic sense in Banjo Nuts and Bolts is perfectly fine).
Honestly I've thought about this issue before as well, and I've just come to appreciate TOK in a bubble, though I don't appreciate major retcons like that either. As you said, it literally would have been as easy as him having a line like "I have a defect" or something. Even if Mario games don't care about continuity like some of us do, and even if Nintendo wishes the first three games would be long forgotten, it's quite unfortunate and does serve as a frustrating plot hole.
EDIT BECAUSE I HIT SEND TOO QUICKLY: I do appreciate that Bobby's death was very thematic, and had real plot ramifications regarding Olivia's decision at the end of the game. That was really great, they managed to make the most out of it, which is why I can still enjoy the plot device on its own despite it still kind of annoying me.
I kinda see sticker star onward as a separate universe since it was an aesthetic in the previous games, not an actual part of the world.

No need to apologize! I don't blame you for interpreting it differently, but yeah when I was playing the game I was definitely laughing to myself thinking, "man if this was a story about human characters this'd be racist as hell!" But yeah it was also about how empty Olly's character felt by the end, considering his only trait was "hating all Toads/flat creatures because one of them wrote on him", which was one of my least-favorite aspects of the game.
