    Hi Justin, I love your channel and I'm inspired by your passion for cinematography and filmmaking. I have a question, I'm thinking of doing a docuseries project and wondered on a $2000 budget what lens kit and brand would you recommend for the sony fx30 or fx3? Thanks in advance and I appreciate the hard work you put in to give us great content and knowledge on filmmaking and gear.

      There's another camera to get if you want a proper cinema camera and love sony sensors. That's the Sigma FP. Unlike the FX3 and FX30 it doesn't manipulate the image at all. You get the pure RAW bayer data straight from the Image sensor.
      I used to think the 12bit linear RAW is a problem until I learned the FX3 also has 12bit linear readout in video mode to encoded to 10bit log so unless you need autofocus and on camrra noise reduction the FP is a clear winner

    Coming from a bmppc4k to my FX30, I agree about a lot of these points. I miss false colors sooo much. Yes, I can access false colors on my external Shinobi, but it's not the same, especially if I want to shoot barebones and don't want to use an external monitor. Another good point is the EI function. I've watched so many videos on it and don't really see the point. It seems convoluted. I stick to ISO 800 for outdoor or properly lit indoor scenes and kick it to 2500 or under if the lighting is crappy. That's it. I will say though that I am still happy with my FX30. Most of my work revolves around corporate events (run and gun) and corporate marketing videos (talking head/b-roll), and the FX30 makes those shoots much less stressful for me.

    @AMomentInTimeProductions 8 месяцев назад +1

    Hey i know you put this video out 6 months ago, i would like to hear your thoughts on this camera now, Starting this September, they are doing a firmware update that gives you
    (1) Shutter Angle..
    So now you are going to have Shutter Angle.. Not to mention
    (2) new 1.5x de-squeeze function for anamorphic lenses, as well as a new integrated high-quality 3D LUT process that should give the camera more accurate color processing.
    (3) New Monitor and Control feature (including waveform and false color)
    (4) New preset 709tone support for color matching cameras
    (5) Expansion of supported lenses (including SEL100400GM and SEL200600G)
    So now all these new features makes this camera a game changer and deserves to called a "Cinema Line"
    just like the FX6 which will cost you 3 or 5 times as much, Yes it's a APSC camera but people was going with Blackmagic and was only a micro 4 3rds camera..
    So I would like your Opinion now and what you have to say about this camera?
    Does all this change your mind about this?
    Not to mention that most cinematographers don't just use the Camera with out addons, they don't just take the a camera out of the box and use just that even with RED and i shot with Red before you do need their monitor, so why not have a Ninja V+ with this Sony FX3 or FX30?
    I mean most cinematographer's have a rig setup and tons of addons to their system it just helps and and allows them to be more creative, it's not all about what you can do with just the camera body it's about what it is capable of with or with out addons, it's all about what you can get out of that camera.
    And for the Price hell you can get a lot for a great price, Very good Entry level and just last year Netflix announced that they support the Sony FX3 and allow you to shoot with that for Netfix shows and movies..
    So i n my opinion, yes the FX3 and FX30 are both "Cinema Line" Camera's Very good Entry level, now if i had a major Project what would i use the RED CINEMA V-RAPTOR XL 8K VV, Yes it's $50k for this camera but NOT just a entry level camera right? NO, and i have used that Camera, it works great, i mean if your going to shoot a Major Motion Picture film with like Tom Hanks or arnold schwarzenegger , or Brad Pitt or actors like that your going to use a RED CINEMA V-RAPTOR system.
    But for log budget Entry level Filming the Sony FX3 and FX30 will do the job and will do it well..
    And Lets talk about davinci resolve, you don't need davinci resolve to do great editing, Premier pro will do fine, as a matter of fact, Terminator: Dark Fate was edited with Premier Pro, yes look it up, so
    davinci resolve is not the be all and end all of video post editing, in fact Premier pro is just as good as davinci resolve if not better in some ways..
    So that arguement and remark of you can't edit RAW in davinci resolve, so what, use premier Pro, works fine there..

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  8 месяцев назад

      hi! what i said about Resolve was directly in regards to color grading, which Resolve is 100% the INDUSTRY STANDARD for color grading. Maybe you should look THAT up. Beyond all of what you're saying, i think you missed the biggest point, is that i do own the FX30, i owned it when i made the video, and i still own it now, and am using it to film my own documentary. Honestly, i dont care what tools anyone wants to use, becuase the camera is just that, a tool. I do believe i mentioned this in the video as well. and yes, lots of nice updates coming for these cameras. However, one thing i would challenge you on is that the majority of real hollywood films are shot on ARRI, and REDs are more reserved for action packed or heavy CGI films where they can take advantage of the higher resolution and global shutters. Everything else, for the digitla filmic look, is captured on ARRI systems. But again, i could care less. the tool is only as strong as the person using it. I also dont think anyone should be buying any of these cameras that are sold for more than 5 grand, especially when they're just going to be obselete in another coupla years. the Beauty of the industry is everything can be rented, and it should be. dont waste you rmoney on anytyhing except AKS & Lenses. :) Or if you are going to invest into a camera body, i think something like a Leica or an ARRI will give you WAY more return on investment as well as always maintain not only street cred but also will always hold its value. WAYYYYYY more than any Sony or REd camera ever even dreamed of. Companies like Sony & RED operate in the Apple mentality, whereas companies like Leica & ARRI operate as true artists. just my 2 cents on it all. But yes, i agree with you about the updates, lots of nice ones, should make using the FX cameras easier. However, what i will say, is the FX30's AF and the fact it being S35 are the cameras big pitfalls, and i did shoot on the a7Siii for over a year , and trust me, the AF is not as good, for starters the FX30 doesnt even have the same amout of focus points, and that makes sense because of the smaller sensor. But hey, if you're actually shooting real "cinema" than you'll have someone pulling focus for you anyways. Just make sure you have a locking lens adapter that is then bolted to you camera cage, otherwise that image is going to be swimming every time your 1st does a long focus pull. And that will definitely look quite the opposite of "cinematic".

      sounds all good to me,
      i do know that Resolve is the INDUSTRY STANDARD, how ever, i still believe you can do just as good a job using Premier pro, Just like with camera's
      It's not really the Software, it's the person using it, you get a person who know what he is doing you can get just as good results using Premier pro as you did with Resolve..
      Like i said Terminator: Dark Fate was edited with Premier pro, the entire thing color grading and clips and all that, When people hear about how that move was done in post with Premier pro, people was shocked and scratching their heads saying "Really?"
      I think they did a great job using premier pro..

    Legit question (didn't want it to be lost in my other comment) but to me it sounds like you're saying that specific features are what make a true cinema camera -- and lacking those specific features makes something not a true cinema camera.
    Are features what it really comes down to?
    Shutter angle, built in ND's (which the Komodo/X don't have), onboard "pro" audio inputs though no one is recording audio to an ARRI, bigger batteries (which some of the cinema camera's batteries don't even last as long as the FX3's), or internal raw (regardless if the RAW is not even used)?
    Not being snarky ... just asking for clarification. I mean if the FX3 is just a video camera, I think you should touch the much hotter topic ...... you aren't a filmmaker if you aren't making actual short/feature films. Wedding "filmmakers" is the biggest load of nonsense that blurred the "videographer" and "filmmaker" lines for all of us.... wedding films are not films. It's a style of wedding videos that brilliantly commands a much HIGHER premium (props to wedding videographers for re-packaging their videos and making more money, great job, seriously! but that don't make them actual films)

      I agree with you. If you dont know about me, I primarily shoot Narrative (www.justinfilm.com) I think my biggest thing when thinking of a “cinema” camera is internal raw. For me and what i do that is like the closest we have to analog film in our digital era. Thats just my opinion of course. Shutter angle just really cuz its what im used to working with for lighting & metering purposes and of course what i talked about in this video. But every good cinema camera does have decent exposure tools far beyond what the sony cameras offer. Which again for people actually doing lighting is important. But i hear ya! 🤙🏼

    Shutter angle / shutter speed, in photography is utilized in much the same way as in the motion capture world… for example shooting a still of a race car… but you need to show the sensation of speed…. So the wheels should be blurred to look like they are spinning. Consider also if you are shooting a baseball game. You want to freeze the moment the bat hits the ball; Giving the illusion as though you froze time. Changing the amount of light hitting the sensor is just another use case.
    That said, any camera that claims to be a cinema capable camera, should IMO supports shutter angle when in video mode.

  • @MagnumDB
    @MagnumDB 10 месяцев назад

    Wow! Glad I found this video! I was researching the FX 30, because while I shoot short films with my black magic, pockets cinema camera, 6K pro, I have been asked to do a lot of event, run, and gun projects. And for my most recent, I wanted to add a third camera to an interview set up that could ride back-and-forth on a motorized slider. I thought the stony would be a nice small, light camera to put on there. And I guess that could still work, but if I ever needed to do other things with it, it sounds like the lack of cinema features would annoy me.
    I am in to say how ignorant I was about Sony buying out another company and stealing their logo. I’m embarrassed to admit that I took seriously the words of some of the RUclips people you’ve mentioned in this video. It really did feel like Sony was top-of-the-line for any camera that didn’t have the traditional “body“ of a cinema camera with the majority of adjustment tools as physical buttons (although my black magic doesn’t have those physical buttons, but the giant display and super easy to use menu Counter that).
    It has definitely given me second thoughts. Perhaps I will buy the previous 6K camera from black Magic or maybe even the 4K. But size is a major issue. I want something as small as possible that I can throw on a gimbal and can do well in low light.
    I feel like I have a love/hate relationship with technology. There is really no perfect answer even when you have a lot of money (which I don’t).

    100% agreed on the shutter angle thing. I kinda miss my BMPCC for that, when switching from 24fps to 60, but also the no nonsense, aimed for film, UI vs. the horrible Sony messy one. To add insult to injury, you cannot change the language on the Japanese version (yeah, I live in Japan).
    I do use an external monitor, mostly because how small the default one is, so false colors are not really an issue for me. I do love the form factor, the battery life (compared to BMPCC).

    My thought... Also i own a Sony alpha photo/video cam before. PPL who buy the FX30 come from that photagrapher area. Your right but the customer who buy the cam would be confused and say "this is not convenient, why this bs isn't working" because it do not look and work like the cam they know. Someone who allready is familiar with cinema cameras know why they not buy the FX30 or if they know "ok i have to set my expectation lower".
    The cam is great but you are absolutely right with your reasons. The changes are mostly only software depend.
    My bigest disapointment is Catalyst bs. and Adobe premieres Lumetry f... bs. I just donwloaded Davinci because i have no control over the RAW metadata. How ever.. the cam is great but it lags in a few important areas. I could buy a more expensive cam or save the money and try to workaround the downsides, and get the best out of the camera.

    As far as I remember, Sony made first digital cinema camera by the request of George Lucas, which was used in Attack of the Clones ( thought it was suppose to be used in Phantom Menace ). Clones was first movie ever filmed with digital camera. So that's a filmmaking legacy. Minolta opened them up to photography market.
    Regarding other issues mentioned in this video, make me think weather I should go with a6700 instead of fx30? But there's no app for a6700 isn't it, or is it?

      This is true. The F900 was an important camera in the history of digital cinema. But filmmakers and documentarians had been using Sony cameras and lenses for independent production since the days of Betacam... which was later replaced by DVCAM, then HDCAM, then XDCAM (and so on). Sony wasn't the first to give indie producers high-quality, inexpensive digital cameras that shot 24fps and had changeable lenses, but they were always in close competition with Panasonic, JVC, Canon, and others from the beginning. I'm not a huge fan of Sony (for other reasons)... but they've been part of the filmmaking community for a long time... they didn't just go from making Blu-ray players to making cinema cameras after buying Minolta. 🙂

  • @dollhausenx

    Thanks for this. In the end, the most compelling part of the FX30 or FX3 is their size. I really want to buy one because it's compact, and I could share some lenses with my A7RIV. But in the end, I keep coming back to the necessity of that $600 top handle and no viewfinder or xlr input, etc. That brings me back to almost anything else. As much I hate the size of the Blackmagic cameras, they're actually cinema cameras. Thanks for bringing Sony down to earth for me.

    I get your points but the lack of shutter angle is the only thing that really holds this back from being a true cinema camera. Zebras and histogram definitely helps get your exposure right, and dslr video shooter made a lut that acts like false color so thats kind of taken care of. Histogram does help you get your exposure right along with the multimeter thst can be adjusted to act as more of a spot meter to parts of your scene. This is coming from a canon fanboy who switched to sony and though the fx30 isnt perfect, it is the best video focused camera thst can produce movie grade images right out of the box. Cause you need a lot more rigging to get any of the bmpcc cameras ready to go. I literally shot a very cinematic recap of an event using just the fx30 woth no extra attachments.

    Hey Justin, fan of your channel since your FP days. I've had the camera for about a year and a half and although I like the crisp 4K cDNG files, I find the IQ from my 5D Mark iii with Magic Lantern Raw to be superior in almost every aspect, although no 4K. That said, I've been intrigued by the FX30, so I was wondering if you have any thoughts between the FX30 and the FP? I understand they're incomparable in so many ways, but sLog3 is one of the few codecs I've seen that picks up the micro details that raw video does. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  9 месяцев назад

      Raw will always win IMO. However with the FX30 you gain Sony’s leading auto focus (with sony glass of course). Plus the convenience of smaller files. Also i find the dynamic range to be better on the FX30 vs the fp. Finally, the biggest deal breaker for me on the fp is the horrific rolling shutter. The FX30 has the Active Stabilization which is quite good but also the cameras shutter had a much faster read out time therefore just produces a better handheld image, even better if you pair with Sony glass that also has Stabilization. For run and gun: Sony all the way. If you’re trying to create something a little more high end and have the time to craft the image with controlled lighting and pulling your own focus: fp. Apples & oranges.

    I'm in a similar boat to you having come from years of Blackmagic and only now going fully over to Sony for my video work - I just bought a used Fs7 and a new Fx30 and they are definitely NOT cinema cameras, whatever the marketing says, but I've bought them for corporate and doc work only. I too have been ranting in my mind over the crazy Sony implementation of Cine EI (amongst other things) and the headache involved in trying to measure exposure accurately without an external monitor. It seems to me Sony just want to find the most elaborate way possible to implement this without actually giving you a solution that really just simply measures the exposure of every part of image you are recording (Log) while allowing you to see the image with a LUT. You didn't mention the bonkers E/I system in Cine EI, which allows you to change the exposure of the LUT but doesn't affect the recorded image, thus tricking you into recording lighter or darker, or (typical Sony) you can choose to burn that EI image in, OR you can (only on the Sony Fx30, not on the Fs7 or Fx6 etc) choose "Flexible ISO". Why not just have a changeable ISO (like in other cameras) and dispense with Cine EI, Flexible ISO, Camera Base, GammaLOG, multiple gamma curve settings, etc?? People say it's the Sony menu systems that are complicated, but it's actually the whole way you set up to record that is ridiculously convoluted. Rant over haha

    I was just looking at the review of the highly rated new film, "The Creator" and director Garth Edwards, who is apparently changing the game by creating a feature iMax level film with a $86M budget. The fact that he shot with multiple Sony FX3 Cinema cameras to achieve this film is puzzling based on your review of it. I have the BMCC 6K Pro with all of the goodies. I am very happy with it as I work towards creating a feature short film. But there's clearly a difference between what I can do with the Super35 format BMCC 6K Pro and full-frame cameras like the Sony FX3 and the new BMCC 6K Full-Frame. What say you? Thanks.

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  Год назад +2

      This craze about the FX3 being used on The Creator is similar to the 5D in the early 2010s era. No difference. Anytime any small camera is used to make a movie, that’s all gear heads care to talk about. If you ask me, any small camera could have made The Creator. It’s more about the team behind the camera. I’m sure they had there own workarounds dealing with no internal NDs, no internal RAW, and no Shutter Angle. They chose the camera for its size and lowlight performance. Full frame will always serve better for more light gathering. And there’s no question about it, Sony cameras are the clear winner for low light. Is it the best look, tho? Well that depends on the look you’re going for. People aren’t acknowledging the fact that The Creator is a Sci-Fi film. So it doesnt surprise me that they chose a camera that has a sharp video look thats excellent in low light such as the FX3.
