In the real world, if you are willing to remove your child from a hospital when they are coughing up blood and spiking a fever then you should not have custody of said child let alone be allowed to make medical decisions for them. Just because the law might stand with parents on this doesn’t make it right when they would be willing to risk their child’s life because of a power struggle with a doctor who clearly knows better than they do.

There is a church whose adherents call themselves “Christian Scientists”. They believe in the power of prayer and only take vaccines where it is a legal requirement, they are allowed to set and cast broken bones and can have basic dental and optometry.
It started in 1878 with its founder and 26 followers and spread rapidly in the western world, including parts of Europe, but since 1990, membership numbers have plummeted from 200,000+, down to ~100,000 in 1990 and by 2002 had declined to less than 50,000.
One of my favourite shows I’ve discovered since living in the U.K. (I’m 🇨🇦 and moved here 11 years ago at 28) is “Call the Midwife” and they did an episode where it was discovered the infant had osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease. The parents were targeted by child protective services for the child having broken his collarbone (at first it was assumed it was broken during birth), but he quickly fractured his femur and no explanation could be given by the parents. Sister Julienne came to do a regular postpartum check on the infant after his collarbone fracture and the neighbours, the husband and anyone within earshot were complaining about the baby screaming and never quieting, and Sister Julienne was shocked to discover the parents wouldn’t administer paracetamol/Tylenol to ease his pain And sister Julienne managed to convince the mother to let her administer the drugs because she wasn’t a member of their church. Once the child was removed from their care, the foster mother brought the baby into the doctor because he was crying In pain again and upon inspection he was found to have spontaneously broken a vertebrae in his back, which led to the diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta, and absolved the parents of any wrongdoing.
A friend of mine became a GP, and she has two families in her practice who are Christian Scientists. As their dogma hasn’t changed since its inception in 1878, the level of care that can be provided for medical treatments under their tenets and beliefs is so archaic and limited that it’s almost cruel by nature to let people suffer and rely on prayer and has been the focus of some cases like the one in this video where child protective services have been called and lawsuits have ensued.
Just because you’re a parent, and may or may not have beliefs that restrict your confidence in modern medical practices, doesn’t make you qualified to make important decisions and decide to eschew the treatment offered by someone you may not “like” or like what they have to say and therefore deny care or investigations into the root cause of a child’s illness. Ability to reproduce doesn’t give you an increased intelligence or ability to understand and make these important decisions, which is why there are safeguards in place when parents refusing care or diagnostic procedures is detrimental to the child, but it’s never easy!

Like in some countries there are procedures to quickly (in hours) termoporally cancel parental rights if they don't agree to life saving treatment to their children (refusing blood transfusion for religious reasons, antibiotics etc). And doctors can't be prosecuted for life saving procedured on kid even if parent's are not present or don't agree.

I side with the hospital administrator here. Wether the parents are right or wrong, they have power of attorney and make the decisions. When you go to the hospital it's your right to accept of refuse treatment. As doctor it's not your obligation to cure or treat, but first respect patient's autonomy and wishes... and so if the patient can't make decisions and a third party makes them. Manning and Halstead have very serious god complex issues that render them dangerous for any decision making wish of a patient. Manning herself tried to loclk up a father who listened to his 9 year old son claiming he didn't anymore chemotherapy. Awful doctors. In real life I don't think they'd keep their license for long

Administering any treatment to a child, that their parents did not agree to, without a court order is assault. They could sue her and the hospital for millions of dollars and she would definitely lose her license.

I know this is fictional, and if real the child's life would be at risk, but sometimes with parents like these you just want to say go on, do what you think is best, but don't complain to me when your child dies......
A case like this really shows how much a doctor does their job because they care, so much so their risk arrest to save a life!

  • @lauraclaire

I’m not a doctor but I work in child care. It shocks me that some parents won’t even vaccinate their children. It’s so irresponsible parents need to stop looking at crazy articles online or people who say their herbal therapist’s or whatever. If a doctor a hospital says your child is seriously sick and needs treatment you need to listen and let that professional act.

    • @wolves600

If a parent already has preconceived notion of you or already has a high wall, hand the case to someone. You will still get the same result without jeopardizing the chance of giving the child treatment, a lawsuit and yourself.

Medical is and always has been a team effort. Not sure if this reflects so called advanced nation's (US) way it is done as depicted in this episode where one doctor acts like a God.

In a way, they sort of have to. They’re the ones trying to decide what is medically best for their patient (and then have to try to convince said patient to take their recommendations.)

You’re the best kind of doctor. It was a doctor like you who made me feel comfortable when I was nervous about getting my baby a flu shot. Many of my family are against them and actively think they cause harm. So I was worried when they said about giving my little girl one. The doctor took the time to chat to me about it and explain the risks and benefits of the situation. She didn’t judge me for being reluctant, or push at me in a way that might have spooked me into saying no. She armed me with her medical knowledge and let me decide. My daughter got her shot and I’m grateful to the doctor who helped me help my daughter.

  • @pearlluber5849

Why do the parents take the child to the hospital if they are refusing the treatment that the hospital gives?
I remember during a measles outbreak this mother brought her little girl to the clinic. She had a fever, pneumonia and very likely measles. This child had no vaccines and was against antibiotics. I asked her, ''what is it that you want?'' Than I had to clear the clinic for a while because of the probable measles in the air.
