- In this video, I will show you how to use the Motion Tracking Effect in Kdenlive. You can use Motion Tracking to move Text and Images together with a subject in a video.
When using Images, I recommend using PNG files so that you have background transparency.

Great tutorial! About fixing the arrow position you could simple add a second transform effect AFTER the one you already have and set an offset from the tracked position. This way you afford the manual position fixing.
I thought the exact same thing. It definitely saves time than from having to edit each keyframe. I agree, it was a great tutorial though!

Is there a tutorial on this please. I have added the second transform effect but not sure what you mean by setting an offset from the tracked position.
@@chillimocha use the second transform effect to "correct" the tracking transform and have your element where you want it to be (aka. "offset"; the second transform then *is* the offset)
@@chillimocha Well, the first transform is the one that is moving the object on top of the tracked element. If you add a seconds transform and set an offset to X than object will still move following the tracked element (thanks to the first transformation), but no longer on top of it since the second one has moved it to the side.By adjusting the X/Y offset of the second transformation you can define where the object will appear relative to the center of the tracked data. I don't have a tutorial for this, but I can do something if you still having issues.

So, after a few months of returning to this video, never getting it to work, I found the problem, the object you want to follow must be in the "Circle" at the START of the clip you are using. If you are only following a few seconds of a longer clip, trim it down to only the portion you are following. If it is off screen, you need to cut it down to where it is in frame before you trace it. You can manually change it later as it enters into frame, but to do it Auto, it needs to be in frame first. He does this in the video, but it isnt as clear as it could be

At 5:40 - for anyone watching, increasing the keyframes spacing helps to smooth out the motion of the ellipse if the object you are trying to track is, for example, rotating as it moves across the screen. When you copy the tracking data and import it to a transform effect for some text/image, it will more closely follow the actual path of the object you want to track rather than its path combined with, say, its rotational motion
Would it be easier to edit the arrow image so that the arrow is off-center, pointing on the right spot?
Yes you can do that too :)
I think it's better to just add another "Transform" effect to be applied after the tracking one.
@@davidsevilla2498 Yes, that should work too. Also worth trying is to set Mapping to "Position" instead of "Geometry" when applying the imported keyframes.

thanks for the tutorial - for anyone who doesn't know, the current version seems to have a bug involving copy+pasting keyframes onto other projects. gotta transfer it by hand. :/ also, if you can't find the motion tracking option, you need to install opencv.
Excellent. Thanks. There are other tutorials for motion tracking in Kdenlive, but they are so outdated to not be much use. One says to use the motion blur effect, but it constantly crashes in the latest version of Kdenlive.
Why not add another transform that offsets the keyframe X and Y values, instead of editing all the keyframes?
Interesting approach. I have not tried this, but when I refresh this tutorial, I might give it a shot.

Thank you very much for the tutorial! One thing I noticed is, with some videos the inserting of the motion track in order to transform the text just does not work. I think I remember, that I recorded the video in question with a gimbal…
I believe you aren't alone with the motion tracking issues. I think this may have stopped working with newer versions of Kdenlive or perhaps a different method has been implemented. I haven't had a chance to investigate this yet, but when I do, I can post an updated tutorial.
Maybe this will help someone.
First: click "view" then checkmark "effect/compisition stack" or you dont see the effect options.
under motion tracker (in e/c stack) click options, then copy keyframes to clipboard.
goto transform effect click options and import keyframes from cipboard. good luck!

Do you have a tutorial on using Moting Tracking together with Pan and Zoom to keep a moving object as centered in the screen as possible?
Or maybe any other effect to keep the object in the center.

I was using Kdenlive for something similar (not using motion tracker feature)... moving a png image around the video using keyframes, but somehow kden changed my keyframe values, so the image just went in a straight line across the video instead of following the path I chose with the keyframes. Do you know if this is a bug or did I do something wrong?

It works really well; the frame shape follows the object perfectly, but how do I get the frame shape to act as the camera? Is this possible? Regardless, you have earned a subscription.
Hello This effect is not available in version 21.08.2 :-( Can I download that somewhere?
When I CSRT tracking, the program crashes. KCF is the only one that works, but text is not visible after tracking info is pasted.
Unfortunately motion tracking is no more on the latest version of the kdenlive.

Thank you, after downloading the app image version, it appears normally. Seems the package shipped by Linux Mint is buggy at the moment.

May be they change the "Motion Tracker" to something else?
I just check version 12.12 on my machine, it is still there. Try searching for "Motion Tracker" in the Effects tab.
Or maybe the problem is my Linux Mint? Let me try other distro.

The red box from the motion tracking tool will not render out in the final video. Just make sure to hide it by making it 0 pixels width as demonstrated in the video.
So with the arrow you actually don't need tracking at all when you do it manually. You just need the transform.
Yes that's true. When you do it manually, you will be using less keyframes (because there's no way you would want to place a keyframe every 5 seconds) and the action will appear smoother.

Lovely tutorial man. Do you think it would be possible to do the "Locked on stabilization" using motion tracker and probably pan and zoom. I would do it myself but Ive failed numerous times and I was hoping you could pull it off and show us a tutorial

For people like me wondering why Motion Tracking is missing, turns out you need OpenCV installed. I'm using Linux Mint, and forgot if I installed through PPA, and couldn't figure out which OpenCV dependency it needs. So..
My solution: I just reinstalled through flatpak instead.

If you want to track multiple objects in a video, do you need to make a copy of the video and individually track both objects or is there a faster way?
I have not tried tracking multiple objects in a video. This is an interesting problem. It might take me some time but I'll see what I can come up with once I refresh the tutorial series for 2021.
You can do this with a single tracker. So, if there are two gliders, "Larry" and "Jack", use the tracker to first track Larry, and apply it to the transform effect for Larry's label. Then, using same tracker, click Reset, repeat the process for Jack, and apply it to Jack's label.
After you've copied the keyframes to the clipboard, you can disable the motion tracker effect.

Awesome tutorial! But I got a problem: I use Version 22.08.0 and the direct copy tracking button is not there. Instead I klicked on the options and choose "copy keyframes to clipboard".
When I click on the titel again and choose "import keyframes from clipboard" it imports something else (says "rectangle" on top), but not the correct ones. What am I missing? Thanks!

You can manually adjust the tracking path.
@@victorianodejesus For example, at the Transform effect, you can delete and add keyframes manually to move your label. This can typically happen if the object you are tracking is temporarily obscured by a tree, car, etc. Also, some tracking models are better than others at not losing the trarget.

I just started using Kdenlive and at a very basic level i am struggling with the quality of the image or text that i add into my project. Everything seems very blurry and distrorted any advise will be greatly appreciated.
The low resolution is showing up because you might have the Preview Scaling set to 270p in your Project Monitor, try changing this to a higher number or 1:1. OR you might have Proxy Clips turned on, proxy clips are lower resolution.
Try rendering a small clip, it should render to the quality of the original video.

I watched your tutorial regarding proxy clip settings to improve the performance but for some reason it doesnt activate it on my computer even after restarting the software. Any suggestions?
for the hell of me I can not work out how to adjust the box size with out changing size % and setting x / y W H manually nor cross hair or corner notches

when I type "motion" all I get is: "Motion compensation deinterlacer" from group Image adjustment. omg why is it missing?!?! I just got 22.12.3
Look at the effects under Alpha Mask and Keying.
First you position the arrow how you want it and than add tracker. Than you have no manual work to do.

"you got this rectangle" yes I have but there's no crosshair in mine and I can't move it
Make sure the Project Monitor is in edit mode. Click on the icon below the monitor. It looks like a box with a slash through it.

First you do a tutorial on how to track, and then you say you basically void your tracking and do it manually? lol
Doesn't matter. The tracker can get "lost" so it's nice to know how to get it back on track manually.
We share almost the exact same setup.
