As somebody else wrote, you could just try saying that. But it probably helps to sit down and try to write down concrete points that bother you. Feelings, situations, thoughts etc. I had my first appointment recently and had a list of stuff that bothers me but in the ~ 45 min I could only talk about a part of it.

I thought I was not ready to get help, was strong enough, didn't need it...but then I got forced to see a psychiatrist and to be honest it was such a huge relief to have some support, someone who takes you seriously! I have not made much progress but just talking about it lifts so much weight of my shoulders! Please seek out for help, I know this first step seems impossible but it is worth a try!

Oh God, where I live the psychiatrist only spends like 10 minutes interviewing you. When I was 16 I had some mild OCD and depressive symptoms, and after such 10-minute interview the psychiatrist diagnosed me with bipolar disorder. Thankfully, my mom eventually took me to another doctor and she said I was fine, she only recommended that I see a therapist. But many people don't get that kind of second opinion. I remember taking my bipolar medication and barely being able to hold on to my chair because my sense of balance was so impaired.

On my first visit I was prescribed Vyvanse, Adderall, Valium for daytime anxiety, Xanax for night time anxiety, Ambien, Fluvox, and Gabapentin... Every month I would fill the Rx's but only take the Vyvanse, and the occasional Valium. It's what had worked well for me in the past. I had the type of private insurance that would make doctor's drool. On more than one occasion I have been prescribed some seriously heavy duty meds like Opana, Percocet, benzodiazapines of all types. I basically just stock piled them because it's always good to have stuff like that on hand. It's sad though, because those doctor's didn't really care about me. They just knew that they could bill my insurance insane service fees, and I wouldn't even have to pay a co pay.

The first time I visited someone to talk about my issues, he asked me about the voice in my head and if I ever have negative thoughts or about hurting others or myself. My response was definitely not others. I still couldn’t even admit to my own negative thoughts, he didn’t even question it and we moved on.

    • @toebeans96
      @toebeans96 2 года назад

It's definitely difficult opening up, especially when it feels like the people who are supposed to be helping don't always have the best interest or take the time they should to even review papers before an appointment for example. Or being "well what's stressing you out?" And feeling no explanation will be/is good enough, because I couldn't formulate the perfect sentence to do justice to said issues. Then feeling like I'm really not that sick enough to get help or be acknowledged, that I'm just being dramatic and feeling guilty, because I know others have it worse. It's been months for me and I know it doesn't do me good to hold back my negative thoughts as well, since being truthful helps your progress in terms of establishing a plan of progress, recovery or a timeline in terms of patterns. So I hope you find someone you can be hopefully comfortable enough to be open with and a mental health team if you choose to find out that really advocates for you.

How much responsibility falls on the person who needs to see a therapist. Can one blame their own mental health issue as a reason for delaying therapy?

I feel like there is a lot of pressure to take medication. I've been watching Dr. Kelly Brogan who is a holistic psychiatrist. I absolutely love her view on conventional medicine. I feel like I'm being pushed to take meds because like Kati said it can be hard to motivate yourself. I feel kind of lost because I feel like I'm the only one who thinks the way that I think, and the entire world is stuck on the idea of antidepressants.

My first time going to a psychiatrist was me explaining everything wrong about my life for less than 5 minutes then he asked me, ok so why are you here, what symptoms do you have do you have anxiety? depression? i said yeah probably both, he gave me 2 meds for both and sent me out

So after 6 years of trying to convince myself to be seen I finally made an appointment... I was diagnosed with adhd 12 years ago I thought my symptoms were because of adhd but unfortunately what I didn't know is the similarities in symptoms it carries with other disorders. It was the other symptoms that were in question like 1-2 month long depressive states where nothing mattered including myself where I required a minimal of 8 hours of sleep followed by 1-2 months of manic? states where I would get all this stuff done and require a minimal of 5 hours of sleep and a lot of the times felt like I had all this energy but didn't actually know what to do... my ex-boss once described his frustrations as I were a roller coaster out performing my duties to bairly functional the next day/week/month. some of your older videos suggests bipolar in addition to a little extra research I've done. either way I liked the way you described the differences and so I subbed... I think the thing that drags on me most of all is the manic state because everytime I'd be reaching the end of depression I'd have like a miniature anxiety attack one night convinced I'd seek help but the following day I'd feel perfectly fine not craving help anymore or so unmotivated I couldn't get out and do it... I'm actually kind of excited, not necessarily because I may have an additional/underlying disorder, but more so that I can finally have an answer where i can get help and have an explanation as to why I act so strange instead being accused of making up excuses. I almost hope they find something because there have been times where I've been at a store and totally blanked on what to do next such as take my receipt instead of the one I just signed. it's embarrassing...

#KatiFAQ Hi Kati, I was wondering how you know it is time to stop therapy. I've been seeing my therapist for about a year now, and I feel 360 degrees better than before. However, I was recently hospitalized and still take medication and will have to for some time. Does this mean I need to be in therapy as I continue taking medication? Thanks so much! Love your videos!

I have been going to therapy for about 3 months now and my therapist has been saying I should rlly see a psychiatrist because my anxiety is really bad and it holds me back from doing normal things without feelings like I’m gonna throw up or cry. I don’t have any trauma in life so my therapist thinks this is a chemical imbalance or hereditary. I hope the psychiatrist could help 🤞🏽

Hi Kati! I was wondering if you could do a video about sexual assault ,sexual harassment and sexual bullying in the school setting. I feel your videos have addressed some of those but you really only talk about people who are older . Also I think all your vids are amazing and I subscribe to you on my main account. :)

My first visit was about 20 mins, quick history, checked blood pressure, prescribed some meds (that I was already taking for other reason). And that was the longest visit with him, I went to him 4 times before i said.. no thank you. Cost me 100 dollars per visit and it was useless. Took me many years before I went back to see someone again as I was so disillusioned. So if anyone gets a doc like I did, run!!! And get a new one, most are not like that!

This video is exactly what I'm looking for, I was recently referred to a Mental Health Clinic for reasons I don't know in my country, and I'm currently terrified as to what to expect on the first day. I need to contact someone privately as my story is rather a personal one. Thanks for responding, and God bless.

I got referred to a psychiatrist in the UK about 15 years ago, he wore those round glasses and a black suit, he really looked like one from in movies, was intimidating, he never spoke a word to me, it was his assistant that spoke to me, he was speaking to me thru him, I thought he was very rude in his approach, he didn't even look at me, just gazing at whatever was on his clipboard, his assistant just ticked a few boxes then the psychiatrist just prescribed me some random drugs. Needless to say that I didn't take the drugs, I was just treated as if I'm just a number.
I wasn't in there long, maybe 15 minutes. Never had any follow-up with him as it would of been a totally waste of time. He looked very stuck up and think that he thinks he's better than everyone else and that he probably believed we're not worthy of his attention. After this I just see them as legal drug pushers, I prefer psychologists as they don't prescribe drugs.
Mostly exercise and a healthy diet is much more beneficial as long as red meats is included.

I’m currently trying to find a psychiatrist to meet with for the first time regarding switching my medication on my gp’s recommendation. Wish me luck because the only way I can afford psychiatry is through insurance and I’m already struggling to find people/places who take it, and the ones that do seem to have giant waiting lists for an appointment already or don’t accept new patients.

Kati, can you please talk about EMDR. My therapist (who i've been seeing for almost 2 years) wants me to consider doing this with her (she is becoming trained in this now) since I just opened up about a trauma that happened 7months ago. I'm really considering saying yes but i've read how hard the process is and it scares me. What would you suggest??
